'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, WOW! The Live Action Japanese SPIDER-MAN Series Swings Onto Embeds Everywhere!!
Merrick here...
This news was initially posted a week or two ago in Scott Green's anime column (HERE). But...based on e-mails we've been receiving...many readers seem to have missed it, so we wanted to call this to your attention once more.
For many years, a TV series commonly and simply referred to as "JAPANESE SPIDER-MAN" could chiefly be found for download on the Net (provided you knew where to look & had the patience to endure the slow transfer), through back-alley video dealers, etc.
Now, while everyone's waiting for SPIDER-MAN 4 to get its shit together, Marvel is hosting subtitled, streaming feeds of JAPANESE SPIDER-MAN on its website. Looks like an installment a week, perhaps?
You can see the currently posted episodes (eps 1 and 2 of the series) via the embeds below, which originate HERE.
This version of the famous web-slinging hero was part of a deal that Marvel made with Toei, namely that for a four-year period, Toei could use Marvel's characters in any way they saw fit.
...says THIS WIKI ENTRY.
In short: this is Spider-Man by way of all things that make Japanese entertainment great: men-in-suit monsters, flying techno-mega-fortress-robot-things, and lines like "lately there's been a lot of activity from a group that's secretly invading the Earth". This is essentially SPIDER-MAN by way of POWER RANGERS.
So, have fun with this! For my money, even though this clearly isn't true to SPIDER-MAN's characters and mythology, this is much more entertaining than anything we got in SPIDER-MAN 3.
Take a look...
And a special shout out to The Reluctant Austinite for making sure we knew...

yeah
-
Better than Spider-Man 3. Try and find clips from the 70's American show. My earliest TV memory.
-
This is so much better than Raimi's movies. Its almost better than Bakshi's cartoons from the 60s. This is the way Spider-Man was always meant to be.
YEAH YEAH YEAH WOW! -
I´ve seen all episodes in japanese without subtitles. I will certainly watch them again to finally understand what´s going on... allthough I guess it won´t make much more sense. Great show. Thanks for the post
-
Reminds me of a set of asian power rangers knock offs i saw in a market one day, where the packaging advertised the contents as Sabans Power Rangers, and featured Spiderman, the Hulk, Superman and some kind of lion headed man thing. You know, the ones that are made from lead paint and blades.
-
Marvel announces new name which firmly establishes a uniquely ownable trademark that is portable across all non-linear digital platforms and beyond.
-
a lizard. yep, it's japanese.
-
Apparently it's mechanical webshooters FTW.
-

There's always got to be a robot or a giant lizard, huh Japan?
by filmcritic3000
"Gamera is really neat! He is filled with turtle meat! We've been eating Gamera!"
And yes, I know that Gamera was created by Daiei, not Toho or Toei. -
And this bukkakes on Watchmen
-
The trail at the end of ep1 includes Spidey chasing a giant flying testicle - priceless.
-
I was so disappointed in Hasbro. They are making Marvel Transformers and didn't use the opportunity to make Leopardon. :(
-
as Spiderman 3, almost. Reminded me of that hack version of Spiderman released in the 70s.
-
It's such a busy news week with SXSW and all that I wasn't sure this was really news, but I thought AICN readers would dig this. Sorry, I missed Scott's anime story!
-
than in the American show. I'd love to see them all.

He shoots used panties and $23.00 cans of Kirin Ichiban at our intrepid hero.

"this is much more entertaining than anything we got in SPIDER-M
by two fathoms deep
Fuck off. Professor Monster? Planet Spider? This shit is garbage.
-
They didn't much care what happened to their characters on TV or in Movies. The costume looks just like the one used in the 1977 Nicholas Hammond TV series. It looks fun, as much for it's super sentai-ness/ campiness than anything else.
-
...an "Emissary from Hell"?
-
trust me.
-
How can some of you guys hate this?
-
and this show is more entertaining than Spiderman 3.
-
I've had this on VHS for years! I love this show, but it really is SMINO. Still, its a lot more entertaining than the Nicholas Hammond version (which I also loved).
-
There, I said it. I don't get it.
-
"Better than Spidey 3"? Riiiiiight. This is indecipherable crap. SM3 was a mess, but there were some great scenes: The first Peter/Harry fight; Sandman's origin; pretty much everything before Spidey got the suit is far superior to this junk.
-
External webshooters FTW.
-
everything is better with giant robots
-
...it makes me want to fuck myself with a chainsaw. Japanese entertainment is sorry shit. The only thing they do well is bondage.
-
Sigh.
-
Does anyone know if Marvel plans to release this on DVD? The Toei box set is big bucks if I remember correctly.
-
But it's perfect for watching for free on the Internetz while bored.
-
Great vid!
-
I don't know how someone can say it's sorry shit with "Akira" in his name. Not to mention all that other good stuff, even in recent years "Spirited Away," Miike, J-horror and so forth.
-
Change Leopardon= best phrase ever.
-
But they're TV shows are freaking god awful. Kurosawa and Miyazaki are cinematic exceptions. Miike, is so overrated it makes me sick, though. If you think his shit is entertaining then you are probably a baby-rapist
-
I think they just gave up on normal reality after being hit with nukes.
-
Anybody have any idea when this was actually made?
-
That's the best opening sequence ever!
-
And Spectreman? I was addicted to those shows like some crazy Japanese crack back in the day. And they made even less sense then this does. The only thing on tv I loved more than those shows was anything Spider-Man, the live-action show and the 60's cartoon. This show combined those two things into one -- giant robot-Spidey supercrack! It would have been glorious.
-
Did we see the same movie? I LOVE Miyazaki and felt that was BORING AS HELL. Maybe I should just watch it again, but I remember not ever being engaged by it...same goes for Howl's Moving Castle. I've had it on my DVR for almost a year and a half now and i've still never 'gotten around' to watching it. Substance abuse hasn't even helped me watch it.
-
Just wanted to jump on the bandwagon with everyone. I love wagons...and bands!

To have the little kid wear a sport jacket, tie, and upsetting shorts.
-
well if you don't at least "appreciate" Spirited Away, then you either 1. have no attention span or 2. have no soul. take your pick.
-
The Japanese were thinking: " You know, this Spiderman needs something more cooler...something...mecha...oh JACKPOT!"
-
There, I said it.
-
Utter Japano-Genius!

...on dirt and gravel. Uh...
-
Epic.

by riskebiz
"much more entertaining than anything we got in SPIDER-MAN 3." Um ... no ... it isn't. Only a geek fanboy who gets out his microscope to see if WATCHMEN was the movie he imagined would remotely find this Japanese garbage watchable.

Pure gold.

IT CAN'T BE A COINCIDENCE!!!

There's a 7-DVD boxed set available. How many of y'all are already searching eBay for your copy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Spider-Man
-
Just about kept my interest whilst I ate my fish and rice curry. But guys it was a bit shit really, if the spiderman element had been replaced with sausage dog boy, no body would even watch it and if they had it would be dismissed as juvenile power ranger shit. We went through this period together around 13 years ago. Bollocks then hasn't improved since then. Good luck to those who sit through the other 20 odd episodes. See Ya
-
...this Spiderman show invented many of the story elements that were later incorporated into the Power Rangers stuff. I dunno if that's true or not, of course...
-
They'd probably be > than most current ones.
-
... go out and get (or, hell, just stand in the bookstore and look at) the book "Batmanga". Reading that shit is like they printed comics on sheets of windowpane acid and you're absorbing the active ingredients through your finger tips as you read, I swear.

Italian Spiderman is way better than this or Spider-Man3 :)
by typingaway
A very funny web series found here
http://www.alrugo.com/video_portal/index.html#italian -
Yep, it's goofy and it's got robots...but it's FUN. -And lookit that: the suit actually sort of looks like the suit in the comics!! None of that inexplicable raised silver webbing crap here...
-
Told ya they would dig this post, Merrick!
-
Kid Z speaks the truth.
-
We tarnished DragonBall and the Power Rangers, so they do the same to Spider-Man and the TMNT. It actually sounds fair.
-
...this went two ways. The other half of the deal was that Marvel got to use various Japanese licenses however _they_ wanted to.
So you got Marvel's Shogun Warriors, which would probably give a Japanese person a similar WTF mindblowing if they ever saw it. -
you claim to want geektastic projects that are true to their origins, but you've left watchmen floundering. you bitch and moan about spiderman 3, but where's your outrage over fantastic four? spiderman 3 was way more entertaining and true to it's origins than either of the fantastic four films. sam raimi has made three classic superhero films and really upped the ante for all filmmakers dipping into this realm. you fanboys are just such a whiny, pitiful bunch. even when you get cinema gold, you still find something to complain about. you should try focusing on the things that do work in these films, and not just dwell on the negative. as a filmmaker, i wouldn't want to please any of you bitches. you have no loyalty and no respect. you say you want one thing, and when you get it (whatever you want to say about watchmen, it's a monumental achievement in comic cinema), you just let it die. you guys are supposed to be this all mighty force in the new cinema, but you can't even mobilize strong support for films. meanwhile, paul blart mall cop and madea fans mobilized en masse to make their films hits. and, those films aren't even in the same class as watchmen. you petty dumb fanboys. you can sit their and complain about watchmen and spiderman 3, but you have nothing to say about the REAL crap films that are flooding the theatres right now. i really hate what i'm seeing from this community. i used to love coming to this site, now it's a chore to have wade through all your petty tired nit picking of films that don't deserve it, while allowing the real culprits to go free. you guys have no taste. no respect. no loyalty. and, you just complain all the time. phew. glad i got that off my chest...
-
watchmen is failing because of the sex scenes. parents won't let their kids go see it. i agree with them.
fantastic 4 part 1 lowered our expectations for fantastic 4 part two
i agree that it's weird that mall cop and the high school musicals and that chiwawa movie are so popular. -
...in a "Plan 9" sort of way.
-
You got it completely right about the pathetic fucking fanboys. You wanna help me kill all of them?
-
oh yes
-
or should i say Cryman where everyone is bawling their eyes out, the annoying old hag spouting boring ass shit wisdom every second, snaggletooth, etc. etc.
-
Otherwise, what's the point?
-
...The first time I ever wathched Youtube, back when it started out, It was a bunch of japanese spider-man episodes my room mate was showing me.
-
...I watched and enjoyed the Japanese Spidey. I turned Spider-Man 3 off because it was so fucking boring.
-
And if I could find the Toei DVD set I'd get it...Nippon Spidey wins, that is all.
-
I'm sorry but I have SHAT more interesting things that this.
Bad acting, bad dialogue, bad effects, bad sets, bad make-up, bad story, bad bad bad.
Even Dr Who of the 60s and 70s managed to have good stories.
I'm going to dig out my eyeballs so I never have to accidentally witness this abomination ever again. -
Those wacky Japanese, I tell ya.
-
Is it retro stuff? Like from the 60s? If so, I gotta see it!
-
Anyone who thinks those clips were cool is fucking RETARDED!Here's what I took away from the first 3 minutes of the first clip...at which point I stopped watching.
1. Yeah, yeah, yeah wow?...more like Yeah, yeah, yeah, Kick me in square in the the face please.2. Spider-Man is doing kung-fu or tai-chi like the old ladies in the park down the street from my house. No.3. "Bro! That's a super speed turn." I just shit myself (and not the good way Harry does everytime he sees a Sam Raimi or Michael Bay film). I actually shit myself in anger. Ridiculous... -
I feel your pain on this issue. For all the bitching fanboys do, they generally fail to support stuff made specifically for them that tries to please them. "Paul Blart" and "Madea" flicks are made for people who actually BUY TICKETS. They actually GO TO THE MULTIPLEX. Fanboys tend to stay home more often with their big screen TV and download bootlegs of the new movies made for them until the Blu-ray comes out. Then they burn a copy of that. They generally say, "I'm not gonna pay for it if it sucks." But they just assume it's gonna suck, because generally they've already stollen a copy before they know.
-
Thanks, AICN.
-
Holy mother of Jebus Creez! Was that a trip or WHAT?!?! Very bizarre. I'm watching it and thinking how anyone could do that. Even on a small budget there is no excuse for that. Weird shit indeed.
-
Bwoo bwoo bwoooo.
TJ Hooker's soundtrack to them to whole other over though. John Carpenter was always big on that sound too. Some evil dude steps into view in the background, and cue the music..BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! -
I'm buying the DVD's if and only if Nippon Spider Man beats the shit out of Tuxedo Kamen and gives Usagi (Sailor Moon to the uninitiated) a sound rogering up the Hershey Expressway.
No assfucking of Sailor Moon, no purchase Japanese Spiderman. I can spend my time in the theater watching New York be destroyed by Dr. Manhattan's Mighty Schmeckel instead of watching this shit.
And yes, Rusty StarDust is absolutely right. The Fanboy Community is letting Watchmen Die. Of course, the sex isn't the only reason. The movie is a bold statement, and as faithful as a movie can be to the graphic novel. That's part of the problem.
Too many people go into the film wondering why Nixon is still President. Only the Chihuahua movie gets repeat business. Watchmen tries to make you think. Chihuahua doesn't. -
The minute you mentioned TJ Hooker you brought up nightmares of the Shat.
I have black nightdreams of a Surprise Shat Cameo in the new Trek film. Yeesh. -
It had to be said
-
YOU know that I'm right. Wowswers that is-AWFUL. It is AWFUL.
-
That was one nasty mofo.
-
---What the fuck you are having Harold WANTS some of it--it's NO ONE'S duty to sit and make Watchmen a GAzillion Buckywucky hit. It AIN'T Happening. It's BORING. It's TOO LONG. It's got a Guy in a fucking Owl Suit making a napaulm Spooge in the night sky over NYC. It's got Leather chickie doing her Anna-Frida L-I-N-E R-E-A-D-I-N-G best while being mad and pissy on Mars. It's got the Jolly Green Giant's Silver surfer Gigantic PeckerSmurf cousin running around knocking off the Cong and Tanks and Dirty Harry. It's got the Worst fucking Nixon rendition possible. It's got No Giant Robots in it and it has the fucking Village People starring as Ozzy and Comedian and then you sit there and watch some more and you have this really Craptastic series of big blue smurfberry crunch explosions at the end of the movie in all these big cities all over. Gee Willikers it's a James Bond Villain actually doing his thing and getting away w/ it. I didn't even get to Tony the fucked up Tiger there. What the FUCK was THAT-?! The best parts were Komedian as Black Dog Man and watching that nutjob in the Noose there threatoning Komedian. Besides that I donno. You tell me. Don't you think we get the movies we deserve? I do too-that's why we're allllllllllll eagerly awaiting some more Giant Robots this summer, and know that there will be yet More Baydom to come in the coming years. You will be watching them too.
-
Plotect your balls!
-
Just... what the fuck?
-
and just get Brucey to play him....seriously though, it would be cool if Raimi(who is FINALLY on board) had a reference to this somehow..like with Spiderman being a celebrity around the world and Peter watching come messed up Spiderman tv show like this on the tube one day.
-
That was distilled hilarity put to film. Of course it was crap. But it was sublime crap. Truly, Marvel should have Peter say, "im an emissary from hell. SPIDER-MAN!"
-
there's no way American Spider-Man could take on a giant robot.
-
Big Fucking Robots

I have had this series on VHS for over 10 years now! There is even an episode where he fights the Thing! lol basically this series was a Spider-Man Power Rangers thing
-
Wow....they really can put a Megazord in ANYTHING!
-
I was kinda expecting two robots and a guy to be making wisecracks thruout!
-

Half of that intro was stolen from the Nicholas Hammond 70s show
by the equalizer
And what a load of bollocks that was!
-
hated Spiderman 3 - maybe I just didn't notice all the apparently glaringly obvious plotholes, canon-raping, clunky one-liners and choreographed missteps that everybody else hated so much - even though in the real world nobody hated the movie, as it cleaned up more than the moms of most of the basement lichen who hang around this site who should be at work. Still, Power Rangers- Spiderman sounds kinda - KINDA like dorky fun, I'll have to check it out. I mean how bad can it be, especially taking into consideration the inescapable fact that now, more than ever, all your base belong to us.
-
FTW!
-
Never saw this, but I remember the US version with the 1" Spider-rope web shooters. Always love the Japanese twist on American culture.
-
Got the same feelings myself. Tore 'em a new one yesterday on the site. If anime is the gold standard for geek cinema, then there is no hope for anything above a third grade comprehension level. No more Watchmen for the geeks; even they are too stupid to make movies for. No studio will take a chance again. My Pretty Pony, the Movie! coming soon.
-
"Boring". "Slow". Extraneous comments about sponges.
Americans are too stupid for intelligent movies. Don't worry, they won't make another intelligent movie for this market again. Behold the "Fathom" movie, coming right up. Tits and ass and no dialog. BFR. Nothing more challenging than a mental peanut butter sandwich. -
I'm gonna make my new catch phrase!
I wonder if has has to yell everything... Spider piss!
GFY -
What year is this show from? Also, how can the Japanese be so advanced technologically and be so far behind entertainment wise? And don't use anime as an example because anime sucks.
-
May I be the fortieth to say, what the fuck was that?!
-
I used to watch a Japanese show called Go Ranger back in 1975 and it looked EXACTLY the same. That was 34 fucking years ago. What's up with these guys? It also looks like the old American Spiderman show that came out around the same time.
-
well... that and the other stuff.
-
Coming soon to a vending machine near you... if you live in Osaka.
-
I was watching this thinking how funny it was that it looked like Bay or BSG "shaky cam". This show was ahead of it's time!
And let's see....Japanese SM has powers, kung-fu, a flying spidey-car, and a spaceship that turns into a giant robot. This guy has things covered! -
...And it's foreign.
Oh, and if you never mentally progressed past eight fucking years old and you're still living with your parents in your forties, "Men In Suits" should give you a Full Retard "geekasm". -
Up yours, back from Tokyo and no fucking drew in sight
-
The Fanboys DID turn out for Watchmen idiot-fucks. That's why it made $55 million the first week. The problem is no one else supported it.
-
..are living by the mantra, "perception is reality". If you constantly claim something is true, people tend to believe it, whether it's fact or not. Did Watchmen drop 68% the second week? Yes it did. But how can any logical thinking individual claim an R rated 3 hour long movie starring relative unknowns making 86 million in two weeks is a failure is beyond me. The movie's rating means a limited audience, and it's length means limied showings. It will break 100 million domestically. Add international sales and the DVD market and what you have is bank. The suits at Warner Brothers can't be disapointed. They may even green light other Rated R superhero movies...as long as it's 90 mintes long.
