‘Now Take A Seat!!’ 24 7.14!!

Published at:  Mar 16, 2009 2:14:23 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

For the third time this season, Jack Bauer and Sen. Blaine Mayer find themselves in the same room together.

If you’re depressed that Jack is back in framed fugitive mode, take heart in the fact that Chloe’s foreigner husband Morris is about to take on the FBI!

Fox says:

The day worsens when a conspiracy causes key players to scramble and the politicking in the administration to escalate. Agent Renee Walker receives key intelligence, and Jack Bauer yields results from a surprise meeting. Meanwhile, at the FBI, Janis Gold and Larry Moss deal with Morris O'Brian as the pressure soars. Guest Cast: Kurtwood Smith as Senator Blaine Mayer; Tony Todd as General Juma; Eyal Podell as Ryan Burnett; Glenn Morshower as Aaron Pierce; Cameron Daddo as Vice President Hayworth; Sprague Grayden as Olivia Taylor; Ryan Cutrona as Admiral Smith; Carlo Rota as Morris O'Brian; Frank John Hughes as Tim Woods; Jennifer Carta as Presidential Aide; Jon Voight as Jonas Hodges.

In the March 13 edition of Entertainment Weekly, Michael Ausiello reveals that Olivia Taylor is so evil, Aaron Pierce should not have bothered risking his life to save her. Also? Soul-Patch Tony gets some!

Seems like they brought this guy in and went to semi-great lengths to show us just how "good" he really is. It'd be great to give Jack an equally capable adversary for a season or two. I bet we see a lot more of this guy. Or he gets his neck snapped five minutes in.

    The story so far

    by ides

Better than seasons 2, 3, and far better than 6. Not as good as 4 and 5. Roughly on par with 1. Works for me. Hated to see Buchanan die, but you could see it coming - his character had done pretty much all you could ask, dramatically. The most you can ask for in this show is a good death, and he certainly got that. Unless you're Chloe, of course. . . they'll never kill her, and for good reason.

Him going rogue is only stupid because

by guy who got a headache and accidentally

It's always undone 2 episodes later at the most. Just KEEP him that way for once. Christ, that was the most interesting thing to happen these past couple of seasons, Jack actually getting outmatched for once. And then there's something about a badass in a suit on the run from cops that just works for me. I can't believe you people are saying this season is good so far though. Tony has been wasted, the attack on the white house was laughable. If this is what they came up with, having a whole year to think things through, then this show is fucked. The season is inbetween 4 and 6 on the shittyness scale so far, dipping into 6 levels with that white house bullshit.

    This season

    by tomdolan04

has been infinitely more enjoyable, if more dumb in part, than 6, but I could forgive that if it were building to something... Jack going hostile in series 8.

Seriously. After years of being fucked over by countless administrations, saving countless lives, losing his family and loved ones, being locked up countless times and no-one ever believing him to the point where it isn't remotely plausible it makes PERFECT dramatic sense that he'd get tired and ultimately resentful.

They won't do it naturally but as a conclusion to the series it would be beyond epic.

Be interesting to see how they keep up the Voight-tension for the remaining 11 episodes now that he's in the mix. The better series leave a big reveal, or the entrance of the big player to nearer the end (like Dennis Hopper in S01) so hopefully there's still a big surprise up the writers sleeves.

Ok in 24 redemption hodges call dubaku on a satelite phone and began the conversation with 'this is hodges'. So that means his name is bound to be on dubaku's list of traitors. So why isn't jack taking a closer look at that list instead of intterogating the senator's chief of staff in the hospital?

I've been thinking the same thing myself. I can't see Voight's 'weapons' being the only plot thread to see out the rest of the season.

    Ethan not a mole

    by fat and curious

Remember him calling the 16 yr old secret service agent traitor who tried to kill the first husband? Ethan was calling for him to bring the President's husband back to the White House and had no idea he was being deceived. That's a whole other loose end they need to tie up.

    Fat and Curious: right, but

    by chrth

If Ethan's only contact is via Voight, he may have had no knowledge of any of Dubaku's/Juma's plans (except to get out of the White House before Juma attacks). And, in fact, it looks like the First Lady assasination attempt was a spur-of-the-moment thing anyway. That would explain why he wasn't on the list, and give Voight his own in that's not dependent on other assets.

    by tallboy66

Seriously, the guy was a drag since he first showed up in S.4 and was basically just the guy who said "Jack, go here!" and Jack said "Copy that!!" for 5 seasons. Who was calling him a fan favourite? He really SHOULD have died in the previous episode when Juma had him cold. But it was kind of a shocking death and he went out like a champ, so that's okay. Certainly not the most lamented death on 24 ever. I just thought he was kind of a useless character by this point. Apparently, the writers did too.

It was a legitimate argument (being so far gone, you've forgotten what you're trying to protect) that is something of the theme of the season.

    Ghost Who Lurks

    by rob in wi

I agree that Jack's been proven right in these cases. And where the argument for the opposing side was weak was in the characters of Moss, Rack Bauer and Senator Red Foreman. What the last testament of Red did, though, was put a coherent and cohesive argument forward as to why what Jack has done throughout the series might not have been best way for Jack to live. He lost his sense of purpose (protecting the government and the people). The line "Let the government who've worked so hard to protect help you now" (paraphrase) worked when laid out in the argument. It's also what made Senator Red's death that much more shocking.

He lives in a house where we CLEARLY see that he himself is cautious about his own safety, given that he turns ON the security system for the house even when he's inside......And yet with all of that, you're telling me the assassin rings the friggin' door bell and the Senator just OPENS the door without looking through his peep hole to see who it is first? Or far more laughable that the assassin can wait RIGHT outside the door with a fucking machine gun???

    by bullet3

Why the fuck would there ever be a backdoor into an encryption algorithm? That defeats the whole point of an encryption algorithm, as it would easily be discovered by hackers looking for exploits. And how does Renee have some ultra-secret encryption on her laptop that's too strong for the FBI to break? Come to think of it, that whole scene was really fucking stupid.

    So...

    by rich malone

Loved this episode, one of the strongest of this season thusfar...It had Red Foreman finally taking a sip of the 'Jack Bauer kool-aid'. It really was heartfelt that someone older than Jack tried to reason with him, and show him 'balance'. I sort of gasped when Quinn hit him, like, how bad of a day can Jack have(oh, right....duh). Very creepy how Jack pops up like Jason Voorhies in peoples homes(ala' Senator Raines at the end of last season). Gotta love Tony chilling & having an latte at cafe-le'-fu-fu when he got the call from Jack(you see someone in all-black at Starbucks, you know you have a problem). I still hope he's not rouge, and he's still down for the team. Also, I loved Moss's pep talk to the tact team warning them of Bauer's skills("He's got more training than anyone in this room, including me.") Gotta love the GTO(yeah) that Jack cuffed and drove off in. I won't even mention the dope hand-to-hand combat with him and Quinn, we all know how ill that was.

But if you don't enjoy the show anymore due to plot holes, moles, etc...DON"T WATCH! These characters deal in a (say it with me now..) 'alternative version of our present', where a female is pres, and not a Brother. They deal with int'l terror, so it makes *sense* that every season revolves around a similar theme. Have fun with it, enjoy the wonderfully talented actor that Sutherland is, and move on.

    by the mcpoyle clan

Listen to your wife! This was a good ep. I'm glad they gave Sen. Boddicker some depth and didn't leave him as just another government blowhard. The scene with the loader tipping over the trailer was great, as was the smackdown. And yes, backdoors are used in cryptography, put in by government directive. Agent Moss needs to leave the dammits to the master, however.About Burn Notice--Esposito usually does comedy, but since BN has that laid back vibe, I could see her kinda pulling it off.

    by chimpjnr

Next season. In order to do so though, they need for us to still be able to emphathize with him, hence all of the reasons they are throwing out to side with him. It's one thing to side with an anti-hero for a full season, but a whole different thing to root for an out-and-out villain. He'll still end up dying though. Didn't they say years ago that it would ultimately end with Jack buying it?

    by chimpjnr

42 years old. I know that Jack is no spring chicken either, but I thought assassination was a young man's game? Jack's words to the dying Quinn brought back memories of his offering to "make it quick" to the guy who tried to inject him after interrogation back in Season 2. Jack was naked at the time if memory serves correctly. One of the best scenes in 24 (in a season that was full of them - Season 2 rocked, but maybe that's because it was my first. You never forget your first time...only in this case it was actually good).

a guess on the car, and PC skills on the show

    by arcadian del sol

anyone in the IT field who watches this show just laughs out of their chair every monday night. Like when Morris decrypts the file - and instead of an open window showing a yellowy colored folder and a file with a big Microsoft W in the middle of it, this 3D rotating, spinning, cartwheeling graphic of a photo with an address goes "zoo-zoo-zoo-zoooom" on the screen.
seriously - does anyone have a computer whose default interface settings do this? The nearest I can get is "show folder contents when dragging" in Windows XP Pro, and even then, it has to be manually dragged around, and its not a cool blue-neon interface - its just a white window with files in it that Im mouse-dragging around the screen.
The car looked like a GTO but we only saw the back of it briefly. As for the Verizon "air card" he used (nice commercial there, Verizon!), we have 8 of them here - they literally pop in and bam - you're on the internet, so that part wasn't crazy. Doing it while driving in a stolen car at 65-70mph down DC avenues? Youd be dead before the first intersection.
And kinda funny how a show who wants you to know is "going green" is driving around in classic street cars, belching out more toxins than an Iraqi military research base. I guess they all wore canvass shoes that day to balance their footprint.
I mentioned this already: I think it was suggested that Morris is the guy who wrote that encryption. I also think he was right - If it was his own brother running from the FBI, you dont send the mother of your children to prison for 15 years because of some loyalty to some guy who works at her office.
also, anyone who doesn't pack TWO TOOTHBRUSHES is not thinking ahead. When Jon Voight says to pack PJs and a toothbrush, and you only pack ONE toothbrush, you fail. And STOP CRYING ABOUT PEOPLE BEING DEAD YOU BIG SISSY.

    Moss IS the Mole.

    by chromedome

Set up from the beginning that Rackles trusted him, and that his dislike for Jack was based on a combination of disapproval and jealousy. But he has hindered Jack at every chance, delayed, handcuffed, etc, Jack at every chance, and will only relent when ordered. He is not jealous or disapproving, he sees Jack as a threat to his plans. He was on the phone telling someone where Jack has not been seen, change your search to here... We assumed it was field agents, but it could have been hospital assassin. After learning where Bauer was, his reaction was not fear for the Senator, but fear of what Jack could learn from the Senator. He sent Hospital Assassin there, delayed, then sent metro, and followed with his own team.He gives the Shoot On Sight Order.Agent Moss is working for Voight.

I would rather they killed off the Chief of Staff, say, than the senator, because he was one of the more interesting characters this season. Go back and look at the first two episodes. When Bauer went with Chesty Freckles to "gather intel" via Jack threatening some dude within an inch of his life, and the shooter on the roof across the street took everyone out except Jack and Chesty, Moss called out an incorrect # of people dead, assuming that Jack was killed as well (as he had hoped and planned with his group's sniper in place). No one else jumped on this one. Now -- trust me. 24 writers don't make mistakes like that. 2 guys were killed. Moss said there were 3. C'mon -- someone with TIVO back me up here!

    Encryption

    by _maltheus_

Last I checked, 148 bit is not a power of two. And who the hell uses blowfish over twofish? And no, there are no government directed back doors put into encryption algorithms (maybe into MS Windows). Just like they wouldn't have left a backdoor in that stupid CIP module. You'd fundamentally be jeopardizing the security of the nation. These algorithms are all heavily scrutinized open source. And it's not like the government would need a backdoor in a "148" bit cipher anyway. The NSA could brute force crack that in under a minute, if not a few seconds.
