A set look at HERE ON EARTH

Published at:  Jul 27, 1999 1:33:53 AM CDT

Hey folks here's one of them there romantic teen drama thingees, but ya know... I'm a bit interested in this one. You see, it's the feature introduction for me of Mark Piznarski, the director of THE 60'S miniseries. He directed a film called DEATH BENEFIT a couple of years back, but I'm not all that familiar with that title. But I really did enjoy THE 60'S miniseries. Also, while not mentioned here, I'm a bit excited about Annette O'Toole... I've been a fan of hers since an early eighties movie called FOOLIN' AROUND she made with Gary Busey. I don't have a copy of it on video, but I can remember watching it everytime it came on HBO. And when she played Lana Lang in SUPERMAN III... well shucks... I swooned. Alright... I've now admitted to my Annette O'Toole fetish... Go ahead.... laugh at me.

(This is really strange to me, to even have something worth writing on AICN.
I've been coming to this website for quite a while now. Anyway, I have some
dirt/not very large and mild spoilers (#=skip over if you don't want to read
spoilers, but the spoilers are mild enough). ((I wouldn't want to give away
the ending and the plot, but it's similar to some that've been red-lighted
by AICN readers) Anyway, get to the scoop)

Hi. Background Artist reporting from Welch, Minnesota, the shooting location
of the upcoming Leelee Sobieski (Joan of Arc, Eyes Wide Shut), Josh Harnett
(The Faculty), and Chris Klein (American Pie) movie. One of the other main
charecters is the actress who played Meredith in the new Parent Trap movie.
(sorry I can't remember her real name, and she looks about ten years younger
here)

### CONCEPT SPOILER

-----------

Yeah, it's a illness thing mixed with what is suppoused to be a normal
teen's life, but it's played out really well.

The two scenes that required extras today were at the re-opening of the town
diner, Mable's Table. (I was in a tie-dye shirt and close to the camera
throughout, which surprised me.) Leelee is in a cast, and she and Josh were
kidding around with the crutches, and Chris was singing songs from Austin
Powers to the crew-people. Everyone on the cast is really cool and
down-to-earth.

#-Mild Spoilers

---------------

The scenes today revolved around a really sappy moment between Chris and
Leelee, where he gives her five yellow roses from his greenhouse, in which
Josh looked like he was about to cry at one point. He likes Leelee, but
there's definitely more going on with her and Chris. The scene never got
stale to watch. It'll be one of the better moments of the movie. It's not
overdone, but it really explained the charecters to me.
Without giving away too much, Leelee's room is awesome and has a lava lamp
and a ton of CDs, she has a fight with her mother, the food they had on the
tables were a day old and in 90 degree sun, there's a Fourth of July scene
with alot of people, a graduation scene, and a scene in a church.

It'll be released in 2000 by Fox, maybe about May or June. Guessing from the
"relations" scene(-s?), swearing, etc. , the MPAA will probably slap it with
an R. I think that's a good thing. This movie isn't "Never Been Kissed",
although Leelee is in both. It's not a happy movie or comedy, so I don't
know how well it'll place, but I'm hooked. You probably won't be by this
review, but it's worth seeing.

    Soapy Shit

    by toeboil

Well, this script was loved by agents and and and execs. But I am not into shameless, by the numbers munipulations. The fact that this teenage soap opera is being directed by a man whose best thing on his resume is the terrible mini-series THe 60's makes this project even more wincefull. Our only hope is that these fine young actors are given license to rise out of this pile of manure.

    Harry are you on crack?

    by pipsorcle

Dude, Harry, the 60's miniseries is one of the most lousiest piece of shit I've ever seen. No interesting characters. AWFUL script! Too cliched to even be a worthy film. Hardly any development at all, cause the filmmakers spend too much time trying to examine every damn friggin event in the 60's as it is! Plus, at the end, it's so gay. The guy gets the gal, but how the fuck is she all of a sudden so content and happy? The two of them had a fight earlier and it seemed as if they wouldn't meet together. But somehow this girl (a.k.a. the lovely Jordana Brewster from The Faculty) appears at the end out of nowhere! It seems as if the filmmakers of the 60's were more interested in telling a film lecture about the 60's, rather than making an entertaining film. The dialog is nothing to brag about.

Actually, if there's any good thing about it, that's the Jimi Hendrix character at the beginning. Maybe if the filmmakers could have focused on Hendrix instead, with a biography, instead of this 60's crapfest.

    Mediocre script(?), but great cast!

    by all thumbs

You know...the initial concept and script may not seem like much, but it's got an excellent cast and if anyone can pull off a great performance, it's Chris Klein and Leelee Sobi..the rest of it. These two actors have a great foundation for a long and diverse career because they can do both comedy and drama. (Klein does have a few serious scenes in PIE and sort of in ELECTION)
Does anyone know when or if the JOAN OF ARC mini-series is coming out on tape? I missed it and would love to see it sometime soon.

So the fact that she's got a lava lamp and a lot of CDs is considered a spoiler? And they say the art of storytelling is dead...

    Great cast

    by pipsorcle

True... The cast was good, but I didn't believe them even for a second as people a part of the 70's. I think that the filmmakers just picked them out of the blue and didn't bother to spend time examining them. I was so bored, so DAMN bored at that speech Jerry O'Connell gave. No offense or anything, but it really was boring! Time to turn the station to Born on the Fourth of July!
