The Juice on DEEP BLUE SEA

Published at:  Jul 25, 1999 10:12:56 PM CDT

Well, if you hated LAKE PLACID, it looks like you'll hate this one. But if you liked Lake Placid it isn't a sure thing that you'll like this one. Personally... I'm just hoping it's a short movie. I see it Tuesday. Here's the Juice

Anyhow I saw Renny Harlin's final chance at hollywood sucess tonight
(for those who dont know that is deep blue sea) and i must say i have mixed
reactions. Some things were blatantly stupid, 98% of the characters were
shit, and the cgi sharks were fake (animatronics not bad). I must give credit
though to the unfinished scene at the end, it reminded me of the days of the
classic Jaws nintendo game and i feel they should keep it like that to pay
homage since they steal so much from that movie already (not to mention they
should save their money).

Yeah you can file this one into the Damn it should have been cooler,
file. It ripped off just about every movie in the last five years. It had a
few intense parts, but you just cant shake how shallow the characters are,
and its a damn shame. When i think back at this movie i cant really recall
what i liked about it. What i cant explain is how i was entertained during it
despite all this. During the film i didnt really have a problem but when i
think back to it i do. So many things are just irrational, like the
helicopter scene (i wont give it away but its just stupid), but of course i
get the common lash back that its just a movie, of course this is from the
same people who called Clerks dull and whined because it was in black and
white when i made them watch it, damn uncultured bastards, must they be spoon
fed everything. Expect this to be panned by the critics, but make a pretty
penny in the oppening weekend...

Peace out Juice...

DEEP BLUE SEA vs. BLAIRWITCH PROJECT

    by the tall man

I'm not a Renny Harlin fan, though I did enjoy LONG KISS GOODNIGHT - guilty pleasure. So it's not like I'm gunning for his failure. I'm gonna go see DBS, looks like mindless fun. Hell, I paid to see MUMMY - piece of crap. But the thing that made me write, that rang a bell in my hollow head, was your line about it making a pretty penny. I'm not so sure about that. BWP is setting records man. I got buds all over the country who CAN'T see it cause it's sold out. DBS moved up a couple days out of FEAR of BWP! Incredible! The 100 million mega-budget is running scared from the flick made for pocket change. This is a great development in cinema my friends. This one is looking to be different from that MARIACHI SAMURAI flick - whatever the hell it was called. If BWP kills DBS at the box office...WOW! Pretty exciting man! Stay tuned Warriors...stay tuned!

DBS vs. Blair Witch: Not a Fair Fight

    by matt murdock

I don't see too much sense in comparing Deep Blue Sea to The Blair Witch Project. I have yet to see DBS, but it certainly doesn't strike me as comparable. There's little likelihood that they'll signifigantly interfere with each other, I think. DBS is something of a thrill ride, whereas BWP is more something meant to actually scare. Although I didn't think BWP was quite up to the hype, it was still more intelligent than I think we'll get out of a B-level summer flick from Renny Harlin (whose movies, for the record, I enjoy). If there is any effect upon each other, I imagine it will simply be spillover business for DBS from those that can't get tickets to Blair Witch.

    "Warriors...come out to plaaa-yaa!"

    by uncapie

I was in Artisan for a meeting recently. What a bunch of insignificant, motherless bucks! Man, their bowel movement does not stink! They all think that "BWP" was "OUR" idea! I heard one a-hole say, "Yeah, this is the next "Nightmare On Elm Street" franchise!" What a bunch of maroons! What's next, "Blair Witch -The Animated Series?" I give them credit though, they really know how to market a film! Anyway, its time independents started talking the helm again just as long as they remember where their roots are. Mellow out Artisan, this isn't the only fucking movie in the world! By-the-way, "Deep Blue Sea" sucks.

Why the blair witch is scaring the hell out of the industry

    by lloyd dobler

Because the movie is so intelligent, that movie goers can't wait to see it ,,and be challenged. Didn't you think that after awhile they would be sick and tired of Dumb ass movies, that pretend to scare you, when in actuality all they make you do is jump a little. I have seen the blair witch three times, and every time I had to buy a ticket 8 hours ahead of time for the midnight show. You know what? It scares the shit out of me everytime. Now that I have the "Curse of the Blair Witch" documentary on tape. I show that to my friends, and we all go see the movie. It scares the shit out of them too. This is why the witch will kick the sharks ass.

    by simon grim

Bereft of any intelligence and depth, everything this summer seems to be part of one big gimmick. I'll be damned if my faith in the filmmaking community doesn't take a beating for four months out of every year.

Forget this movie, go see "RUN, LOLA, RUN"

    by porky

"Run, Lola, Run" is by far the freshest new movie this year. It is truly a work of avant garde cinema which will appeal to even the most jaded moviegoer. Trust me , people, go treat yourself. If you don't like it, feel free to come back and flame me. (I guarantee I will be getting NO flames) C'mon guys, you've all been wanting to see something that will knock your socks off this summer - this movie is it! Harry: how come no pieces on this amazing film?

    The final July weekend

    by the big t

Big T here. I must say this has been one hell of a summer and still a lot of supposedly cool shit is left. First off while all of us talk about DBS vs Blair we forgot the female power. Thats right the new Julia Roberts film Runaway Bride opens this friday and how do you think thats gonna do when girlfriends are dragging their boys into see this eh eh. So I gotta say it looks like DBS and Julia Roberts will rule the weekend I mean come on their are only so many of us smart moviegoers left. Godzilla didnt do that bad at the box office. Big T out.

DBS, THE MATRIX and box-office prediction

    by abking

All these bad reviews at AICN for DBS are so DUMB. They all claim how bad DBS is then in the next sentence say it is very entertaining. DBS is going to KICK ASS. Remember, people thought THE MATRIX was going to be OK but look how that turned out. The same fate is in store for DEEP BLUE SEA. Opening weeked gross: 35-40 million over the 5 day period and 25-27 million over the 3 day period.

    The last weekend in July

    by cineman

I have not yet seen The Blair Witch project and from what I hear it is one hell of a good movie and that is just great. So, it is opening wide this weekend and I'm sure it will do very well. But, there is no way in hell that Deep Blue Sea is gonna fail at the box office because of that film. Yes, most of my movie loving friends wanna see Blair Witch but then again, we all can't wait to have fun watching Deep Blue Sea. Don't you know by now that a film weekwnd can have more than one release that ends up becoming a hit? In the end, DBS will probably come out on top due to more theaters but no matter how much you think DBS sucks, face it, its one of those crowd pleasin' thrill rides and its gonna make a shit load of money and that is why Warner Bros. moved it to Wednesday. Also, Blair Witch is not the only reason Mystery Men got bitched back to August 6. Universal knows that a big budget film whose biggest star is Ben Stiller is gonna need some help to be a big success and they sure as hell won't open it on a weekend that already gives audiences a choice of Blair Witch, Deep Blue Sea, and Runaway Bride, because I'm sure if given a choice most moviegoers wouldn't flock to Mystery Men this weekend. You see, the whole box office world does not revolve around Blair Witch, there are other movies out there to be scared of.

    Hollywood

    by 7766

    C'mon you morons!!!

It's a fricking movie!!! Have any of you ever tried to make one? Have any of you ever done anything but sit on your fat asses, eating crap and complaining about everything?

If you are all so smart then write a screenplay and get it made! How about just finding a good one and raising the money to make it!

I agree wholeheartedly that the independent film arena is the only place doing anything good, entertaining and fun anymore. So use your economic votes and start boycotting bad films. Or even better yet, use it to start making good ones.

Hindsight is 20/20. Its easy to look at a film and say it is bad. Try using some foresight and generate a good one. Anyway you can!

Bitch! BITCH! BITCH! Put your money where your mouths are!

    You all are useless wusses!

    Run,Lola,Run

    by rrivera

I agree that everyone should go see "Run, Lola, Run". It and BWP are both original and exciting. RLR gave me the same feeling I had when I first saw "Pulp Fiction". Its both thought provoking and exciting as hell. Imagine a cross between "The Fugitve" and "Short Cuts" played out during 82 minutes of non-stop action and you have an idea of what an exhilarating experience RLR is. Go see it now.

Sam Jackson Shoulda been the Blair Witch

    by juvenal

Blair witch is gonna whup up on Deep Blue Sea. I could barely get in to see it here and had to wait an hour in line before the box office opened. Also BWP has higher name recognition than DPS. All my friends can't wait till friday when they will have a chance to be scarred shitless. They also don't have a clue about Deep Blue Sea. I bring up BWP and it's "I can't wait to see that." I bring up DPS and it's "What's that one again?" Which is wierd since no advertising for Blair has really taken place. Also, there is no way DPS is gonna make 25 three day and 40 five day. It looks like sci-fi on a boat, and do you remember Virus or Deep Sea Rising? My point exactly.

    Renny Harlin's last chance???

    by beastrow band

Do we really believe that THIS is Renny Harlin's last chance? Yeah, right! And "The Haunting" will be Jan De Bont's. Haven't we figured out yet that these people continue to work despite the obvious lack of talent and ability? I don't know what they have on Hollywood, but it must be pretty darn big!

    DBS/Runaway Bride/etc.

    by rollotomasi

the most striking thing to me about the juice's review is the part: "It had a few intense parts, but you just cant shake how shallow the characters are, and its a damn shame. When i think back at this movie i cant really recall what i liked about it. What i cant explain is how i was entertained during it despite all this. During the film i didnt really have a problem but when i think back to it i do." I can't believe I'm the first person to post that that is eerily accurate as to exactly how I felt about TPM. (don't get me wrong, $33 of that $400m was from my pocket and they'll probably get some more before the run is over, but yknow, it's Star Wars, what can you do.) also, I agree DBS is going to disappoint opening weekend, early wednesday start or no early wednesday start. it has no name recognition. go out on the street and shout "deep blue sea!" at any given passerby and I guarantee you 90% of them will have no idea what you're talking about. as far as marketing, the comparison to "deep sea rising" is dead on. in this crowded a marketplace, aint' gonna happen. now about all these people who are supposedly going to see Runaway bride... ahhh.. sorry paramount, but I don't think so. most people are probably looking at the campaign for this and saying either "I saw this already and it was called Notting Hill", or "This is a different movie from Notting Hill but there's only so much Julia-in-a-romantic-comedy I can take in a two-month period." to make it worse, the tv spots give you no sense whatsoever of what the movie is about or its tone, beyond what is already obvious from the title. not enough to distinguish it from Notting Hill. I predict BO disappointment on this one too.

BWP + Run Lola Run = Movie buffs dream

    by misterwinkie

2 of the best movie to arrive this summer have to come from the foreign film market and the independent films side
nothing could possibly beat these in entertainment wise (but maybe money[national gross])
these movies to me surpassed my expectations in every way,........even more so then SW ep 1 ......i felt more satisfied watching these flicks........and as for DBS....and Runaway bride (gere trying to make a movie with julia again---lets slap her at least with another old geezer)
i feel like i might have seen this film ...must be a hybrid between Pretty woman/Notting hill/My best friends wedding.........we'll see....actually i wont....cuz i dont give a shit for another julia movie this summer....ones enough.........till julia starts making action flicks....:)

I wonder how many of you who are gushing over TBWP (including some of you who have actually seen it), will be among the first to start bad-mouthing it when the backlash starts (and believe me, it will)?

    The Blair Witch Project

    by jonsitzer

No, there will be no serious "backlash" for TBWP because it's among the best independent horror films ever produced, right up there with Night of the Living Dead and the original Halloween. If Artisan has done anything wrong, it's waiting two weeks after its platform release to go wider. Given the enormous press tide, which started after Sundance way back in January, and just the sheer quality of the film they should have known better. It could easily come back to bite them in the ass given the glut of films that have yet to open. Hopefully, TBWP will make the $30 million Artisan thinks it will make, but if it doesn't, we know now that it COULD have made the money given all the $50-60K per screen averages in both the major cities, and the suburbs, if they hadn't gone the platform release route. Witness Columbia's Shawshank debacle--they had a nakedly great film, so obviously brilliant, and they f'd it up with a platform release, and they had to wait until after the Oscar's before anyone really caught on. The movie did okay, but it should have done much better. Thankfully Shawshank eventually found its audience, but not until much later, which cost the studio millions. Let's hope TBWP doesn't suffer the same fate, and everyone gets to see it when they want to see it.
