Hammer Time!! Marvel Delays THOR And AVENGERS Another Year!! CAP & SPIDEY Get New Dates Too!!

Published at:  Mar 12, 2009 2:16:56 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

We’re going to have to wait a little longer to find out who plays Odin's boy in “Thor.”

And “The Avengers” won’t find its way to big screens for another three years, until after Robert Downey Jr. enters his late forties.

“Thor’s” release date has been pushed back from July 16, 2010 to June 17, 2011.

“Avengers” has been pushed back from July 15, 2011 to May 4, 2012.

"Captain America" is getting a much smaller delay, shifting from May 6, 2011, to July 22, 2011.

And “Spider-Man 4” now has a date: May 6, 2011.

As always, it’s better to have things right than to have them fast.

Find all of The Hollywood Reporter’s story on the matter here.

I knew that Herc wrote this before I even looked at it.

    by derlanghaarige

Everytime he posts a new article, my RSS feed alert thingy, that program that tells me when there is something new on every site I subscribed to, gave me two or three alerts for the same article within a few minutes. This only happens when Herc posts something. Why? I don't know. Maybe he is always correcting something after he posted his stuff and whenever he saves the changes I get a new alert. Or maybe he wants people desperately to know that he posted a new article and does that on purpose. Maybe it's just a hardware glitch on his computer. I got no idea. All I know is whenever he posts a new article on here, I get more than one message about the same article. It never happens with somebody else's articles.

    Real News

    by enderandrew

I read this two days ago in my local paper, but they also reported that Marvel ALSO announced a release date for Spiderman 4 in 2011. Honestly, I think that is the bigger story. My guess is that in this economy, Marvel suddenly doesn't want to pony up the cash for active development on so many films at once. By spreading the movies out, they hedge their bets financially, and by getting another pay check on Spiderman 4, Marvel can afford for a movie like Thor or Captain America to tank. The other big story here is that they're moving forward with The Avengers, with no news on Hulk 2. Expect Edward Norton to get recast, unless he really likes The Avengers script, and has strong control over the story, which is a shame because I really like Ed Norton as an actor.

    Question

    by jax

I'm just throwing this out there for discussion, but with the huge returns of Dark Knight and what many consider the "holy grail" of comic book movies (Watchmen) now out, is anyone else getting the feeling that comic book movies are a little played out?I know, I know, there's still Batman 3 to come out, but I don't think they'll really be able to top Dark Knight. Or even match it. Iron Man, too, was pretty good and will be hard to top. Besides and Avengers or Justice League movie, there's little left that a less "geeky" fanbase will get excited about. One reason I ask is because I wonder if there is more behind this shift in release dates than it would seem. Is Marvel getting cold feet about trying an Avengers movie? Sure, Iron Man worked, but Incredible Hulk flopped. Perhaps they're a bit worried that people won't like the characters, or maybe their marketing research is showing them something.I could very easily be wrong. Just wondering what others thought.

Why are you using a pic of that shitty ultimate thor? If Branagh ends up making movie Thor look anything like that I'm going to hold you personally responsible. How about a pic from JMS and Copiel's awesome new Thor series (ok, I'm not reading it, but I hear it's effing epic)? And as for the delays-as much as I hate waiting, I hope this means we get some quality films out of this. And if you think an Avengers film won't work, you are dead wrong, imo. Once everybody's backstories are introduced in their respective movies, that frees up a ton of running time for badassery.

So, someone mentioned the Infinity Gauntlet as a possible epic storyline, which I've always wanted to see on film. Anyone else have a favorite Avengers story that would make a kickass movie? I vote for Geoff Johns' "Red Zone" storyline from a few years back. It could even tie back in to Cap's movie, if you know who the surprise villain is...

    Hulk tanked?

    by javit

Norton's grossed more than Bana's by 2 mil. Pretty good considering the loathing people have fro the Ang Lee film. Inc Hulk was the Batman Begins to Hulk's Batman & Robin. Okay, Lee's Hulk was nowhere near as atrocious as B&R, but you hopefully get the analogy. They had to wash the bad taste out of some people's mouths.
I like what I have seen so far of Wolverine, other than I liked the trailers for the last X-Men movie and that was a rushed piece of shit. Jean kills Scott and can only be saved by the hots she feels for a guy she's known for a few weeks?

As far as I know, they did sign Raimi and Maguire. It's cool to have an actor in the part for four movies, tying Wolverine/Jackman and Superman/Reeves, but by Marvel mentality, isn't Maguire, who is going to be 34 this year, too old now? Also, with Peter forgetting that he is married, does that open the movie up to more serious romances with Gwen Stacy, Betty Brandt, or the Black Cat?

Seriously, I liked the Incredible Hulk more than Iron Man last year. I know I am in the minority, but it was fucking great. Most people I talked to thought it was a direct sequel, and therefore were not interested. Had this been the first Hulk movie released, it's numbers would have been much better. Captain America move

    by logan-x

All these moves are obviously in order to give Marvel more time to make them, but the Captain America move in particular is a preemptive move against Batman 3. I think most people assume that Batman 3 was due for release around that weekend (even though Batman Begins was a June release), and now Marvel has taken it away from DC. However, at the rate they're moving on Batman 3 (i.e. slowly), we may not see that until 2012, or perhaps a fall 2011 release, which might be pretty cool. WB won't have Harry Potter to help them out anymore at that point, as Pt. 2 of Deathly Hollows is due summer 2011.

So Obama gets in and the economy is supposed to turn around overnight. And don't tell me you weren't going there...the whole Obamanomics crap is straight from the Gay Old Party. They want his policies to fail. Why, because they have some high moral ground that what he is doing is wrong? No, they are betting against it for total political posturing for reelections. That is all. They want the economy to totally go in the shitter to win elections. That is about as unamerican as anything I can think of. How is RDJ's age relevant? He looks great and it's not like late 40's is nursing home age, is it? Besides, the suit does all the work for the character - he could be in his 70's and it would still be plausible...

Anyway, I think it's a good idea to stagger the releases a bit more. I was worried when they were first announced that it was just too much, too soon and we'd all be fed up with it. Better to take their time and treat each movie with respect, rather than just as a means to an end.

Wow dude. Way to elegantly get your point across. The lie about the New Deal is hillarious. Unemployment went from 25% to 15% in seven years. It only went up in 1937 because he backed off to satisfy deficit hawks. That was a mistake.

And what the hell is wrong with single payer health care. You like a pencil pusher at an FOR PROFIT insurance company deciding the type of care you get. How come we pay the most of any industrialized country for health care, and get the worst results. Single payer would leave the decisions on your health care to your doctor. And you could go see any doctor, not only those in your network.

Keep listening to Hannity, Coulter, and Rush for your information. Sorry if taking care of Americans scares the crap out of you, but I am ready for this. It is why he was elected. Sorry that more Americans voted for him to do this than voted for McCain to keep the status quo.

" How come we pay the most of any industrialized country for health care, and get the worst results" Dude, it may not be the cheapest, or free, or what ever the fuck, but the doctors and the hospitals are by far the best. That why people who manage to get rich in other countries fly here for health care went the shit really hits the fan for them health wise. And you cannot improve the system until there is some kind of control on waste of time and money law suites, and illegals using the emergency room as an HMO. My sister is doctor and was just telling me about the 14 year illegal she had to do a c-section on to deliver her twins. She told her translator her dad made her get pregnant so they could start get social benefits. So there is a about 24k right there on the tax payer's backs. Multiple by 10,000,000 and I think you would admit there are some problems in that area to be addressed. I have plenty examples of bullshit law suites ( I used to videotape depositions) if you want examples of those. We need to talk to people who WORK in the medical field about the problems they face, not base policy on an op-ed in the Huffington Post.

...not that any of this matters, but I'm bored: Raimi and Tobey are returning to Spidey 4, which is why it jumped ahead. Thor can speak English because in the Marvel incarnation he was forced to share bodies with an American doctor. Don't get the Liv/Sabretooth hate. That's pretty much how Sabre has been depicted throughout the character's history. In particular the time frame of this movie, as most flashbacks between Wolvie/Sabre throughout the 80's and 90's depicted Sabre as looking exactly the same except for shorter sideburns and hair. The fur/hair that people seem to associate with him came from his ridiculous costume. Without the costume, he looks like a larger (not giant) version of Logan, just with shorter hair and sideburns (shaped like Logan's), real fingernail claws, and small fangs. They are supposed to closely resemble each other, because until they copped out with the 'false memory implant' crap, Sabre was Wolvie's birth father. It's actually the Sabretooth in X-Men that's a messed up representation. Again, not that any of it matters.

The system is broken, agreed, but putting big brother in charge is a HUGE fucking mistake. Talk to ANY doctor from the UK. Our national 'stats' are low re: infant mortality etc... b/c we are being compared to western EU nations that are largely homogenized. There ARE NO crack babies in Sweden for instance. So the comparisons are all rendered moot. Anytime a foreign dignitary or Saudi prince gets lymphoma...they get on the the fastest private jet to Mayo Clinic. And lick my salty lobster claws if you argue otherwise because I am the one treating them. Not Michael Fucking Moore. Don't believe the hype you monkeys. Why oh why would they reboot Spider-Man?

    by jax

It is one of the most successful film franchises of all time. While Spider-Man 3 wasn't perfect, I believe people ride it a little too hard on these boards. And if rumor is to be believed, it wasn't Raimie who screwed it up. I was Sony swooping in late in development telling them to replace Vulture with Venom.

Hey, what about the time the Masters of Evil invaded the Avengers Mansion and fuckin trashed it? That was pretty bad ass, huh? Of course, that'd be a few movies down the line. And I don't think they'd go around calling themselves "Masters of Evil". Maybe just the Masters, or they could use the Lethal Legion monniker. That sounds cool and toyetic. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT? GO TO ECONOMIST DOT COM IF YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT THIS BULLSHIT! I would like to discuss the possibilites of a bad ass Avengers franchise! Anyone? Anyone? I am glad others piped up, but lets just lay down the arms and rip into each other for our likes and dislikes of movies, tv, and such. I am not a left wing nut, and can see the points of the other side, as long as they are laid out with thought and facts. Many here have done that, and thanks. Anyway......

I was going to lay off the political stuff, but when say "if you are an MD your salary is probably 10 times more than 99%" I gotta jump in. Know any doctors personally? You got to go thru 8 years of medical school, and then go thru 4 years of making next to nothing working 20 hour shifts under more stress than you can imagine. If they screw up, someone could die. If you screw up, someone has to reorder their white chocolate mocca. Plus you can't take only "machine shop" classes in high school and expect to get into medical school, so you need to bust your ass before you are even admitted to college. Factor in the cost of the college, now a days about 100k when you are done, plus 150k a year in malpractice insurance, and you don't have any easy path. Even if someone worked hard enough, doesn't mean they would be smart enough or could handle the stress of being and intern at a busy ER. That are tons of ways to make a lot of money that are easier and quicker than being a doctor. Only about 1% of the people can make the cut. So pay them accordlinly. You want to go after someone who makes a ton of money for no fucking good reason, go after lawyers, or Kanye West.

Now, will the Vision be in the Avengers movie? Can be the Perez Avengers without him and the Scarlet Witch!

Look. Any simple person could conclude that we cannot resolve a $1 trillion deficit by borrowing/printing another $2 trillion dollars of debt.Any simple person could conclude that there was plenty of pork in the porkless bill that was recently signed into law.Any simple person could conclude that there would be another inevitable pork laden stimulus bill, given talk about TARP II.Any simple person could conclude that Bwarmy Fwank was wrong all along.Any simple person could conclude that we shouldn't put the people responsible for Katrina and the DMV in charge of national health care (or corporal punishment for that matter). And any simple person could conclude that politics has no place in any discussion of a Thor movie.

I realize Marvel is trying to get its ducks lined up for an AVENGERS movie...and, sure, die-hard comic geeks will love seeing some onscreen sense of continuity played out on the big screen...but look at that schedule. You're talking about 2011 being Spider-Man (May), Thor (June), Captain America (July). Boom-Boom-Boom, three characters, three months, in your face.I think diehard comic geeks will love it, I'm sure Marvel is pumping it's fist saying "Yeah, you're all going to be our financial bitches that summer! We'll own you all!", but I'm guessing the average movie goer will say "What the fuck? ANOTHER superhero movie? Didn't we JUST see one? What ELSE is playing at the multiplex?" -- at which point the movie with strong counter-programming (a space opera, a straight-up RAIDERS like action movie) is going to clean up. At which point Marvel will be saying "Hey, where are all our fans???"

Sink like the UK? bite me. The reason we're in the shitter (and by the way, we're not socialist) is because of America. Our toadying government slavishly noshing off GWB and the rest of the republican pricks while disastrously copying their policies for the financial sector and allowing our banks free rein to get involved in your greedy-assed sub-prime fiasco. And before you call me a liberal, I voted conservative last time. Right America Feeling Wronged

    by miyamoto_musashi

A great documentary which show people's ignorance in regards to a level of socialism.
Lots of people were against it but simply didn't understand it.
What was funny and also disturbing is how ordinary people were worried about wealth distribution, and Obama's tax increases. The filmmaker tried to point out that it applied to those earning over $250k only, but the message didn't get through.
The US needs to find a better balance in regards to economic policy, companies shouldn't be made more uncompetitive in the world by having to provide healthcare to their employees.

Yep. Like a round of Candyland or Operator. You play it once 'cause Grandma bought you the game for Christmas, and it looks like fun. You come back once or twice 'cause the annoying buzzer sound annoys your mom, and that's cool. But it goes to the bottom of the pile quicker than your old checkers board. There are far too many superhero movies.
