Besson's JOAN OF ARC changes name + trailer info

Published at:  Jul 25, 1999 9:27:01 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. I saw THE HAUNTING again this weekend and did not see this trailer, but gosh I sure wish I had. Anyway, Steve here was the first to send in on the new title and the trailer's existence, but... if you want to see it soon, I'd be checking http://www.joan-of-arc.com/ once a day for the trailer, since they say the site will go full blown in July... ummm, which is this month we are in. Hope to see it soon myself.

I saw the new trailer for Luc Besson's new film twice today. It was on "The
Haunting," but I'm not sure if this trailer has been attached to any other
prints. The title has apparently been changed (at least in the US) to "The
Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc." I suspect this is being done to
distance the film from the miniseries which came out in the spring. The
trailer is AWESOME, it opens with the words "a film by Luc besson" and then
the names of each cast member slowly appear...you see Joan in a field of
sunflowers or dandelions... it's very short, just a teaser trailer, but I'm
already excited about this movie...

visit my site, www.lucbesson.net, for more info...

Thanks,

Steve

    who will watch it?

    by lindzee

I think everyone knows the story of Joan of Arc and has seen some version of it before. Isn't this a waste of celluloid?

What *isn't* a waste of celluloid lately?

    by aunt kate

Actually, I have never seen a film version of Joan's story. My concern with this is that is might be positive press for theism... and that Besson can't hold the film together, a la 5th Element.

This movie is going to be a MASTERPIECE

    by spacey

Luc Besson can't hold a film together???? What in God's name is wrong with you? Have you even heard of Le Femme Nikita or The Professional? And Fifth Element, not a damn thing wrong with it, it was exactly was it was meant to be. My only concern is Milla Jovovich, she better not get cut any slack just because she is banging the director.

Besson is a (sorta)God...why change titles because of a crap min

    by bigjackiev

Well, he hasn't attained the God-ness of a Kubrick or Speilberg, but he's pretty darned close and probably my personal fave. And why should they change titles to avoid confusion with a TV miniseries? Did the miniseries really do that well? I think 'Joan of Arc' would do just fine...and it'd be cool for Besson fans to refer to it as 'Joan,' who will now join the party with 'Nikita' and 'Leon.' Of course, we'll probably do that anyway...and about the 5th Element, I love the flick more everytime I watch it. Sure, it was a big ball of cheese, but that was done quite on purpose..and doesn't everyone else think Besson was brilliant for having the different characters and plots fly apart and then tie up together again...or perhaps I'm just looking too deeply into a tasty ball of cheese...

    Milla

    by jharmon

My opinion is that they should call it "Joan of Arc played by Milla Jovovich -- You Know, That Chick From the Fifth Element". That'd be enough to get me to go see it (if I wasn't such a geek that I knew all these things anyway....:)

As long as we're talking about saints...

    by lindzee

Did you ever notice that the greatest population of fictional Catholics lives in horror movies? You know what I mean. At least half of all horror flicks have a confession scene, ("Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. I had impure thoughts and also slew monsters gratuitously." "S'okay, my child. 'Cause I'm not a priest, I'm really the bad guy, hiding behind this screen which I will now burst through and try to kill you!" ) and a good deal of them have a priest running around with a crucifix warding off evil creatures. It'd be easier to stay awake in church early sunday mornings if horror movies reflected real life! And wouldn't Father be able to come up with a more interesting homily! (ie. "Today's gospel about the loaves and fishes reminds me of the time the exorcism I was perfoming went bad and the kid began to float around the room") Good night, guys...I'm starting to ramble.

More on the trailer from Vegas

    by cjjames

The trailer is also attached to The Haunting here in sin city...what is really cool about it is that Joan is the only digure shown and is shown only in shadow against a flag blowingin the wind. And the sunflowers mentioned above? Joan cuts one at the end with the sword she swings during the trailer. It does look really cool.

I still think Lili Taylor would be the perfect Saint Joan. I hate how they always turn her into some sort of idealized Barbie doll.

    by fernando

Milla isn't banging Luc anymore, after the shootings were done, they broke up for good for some unknown reason.
And yeah, the movie was worth it's shooting/making.I barely know stuff about Joan, just the superficial thing.I think that this movie will be an important one.Kind of different of Scott's The Gladiator wich sounds like it will be an action movie.Nothing against it,if it end up good.

    by hotspur

It really is a stupid title. I agree. Why change the name because of a crappy miniseries ? Besson is a visual master and I think the poeple who made the miniseries should be ashamed of themselves. They knew Besson was making this movie! They should have named their crappy piece something else!

    On that title, "The Messenger"

    by the gline

Back in the Seventies, there was a big-budget petrodollar epic called "Mohammed, Messenger of God". Anyone remember this? The movie suffered from some conceptual (and artistic) problems, and the producers attempted to salvage it by recutting it somewhat and renaming it "The Message" for the U.S. market. No dice. It's back out on video now, and so I couldn't help but think about it when I heard about the retitling of the Joan of Arc flick. I worry.

    by geekboy

Why on earth has Besson decided to do this. The film is set to be a classic but with a name like that...well...AND just to distant itself from a shitty miniseries. Let's pray Besson changes his mind...Geekboy

The secret "afterlife" of Joan of Arc

    by charlie oakley

I hope this movie finally includes the little-known, but well-documented fact that 5 years after her death at the stake, Joan of Arc was spotted everywhere in France, then was certified to be alive by two of her brothers (the scne where they rediscover her is amazing) and even gains an audience with the King of France. This mistery has never been shown in a movie, THE RESURRECTION OF JOAN OF ARC now that would be a hell of an epilogue. Go hit the books, now!

The Passion of Joan of Arc

    by ogami itto

Anyone who has not seen this movie (Danish silent film), I highly reccomend seeing it. It's one of the most influential and best movies ever. Maybe Besson's version won't top this, but he'll give it a good go.

    D'ark Thoughts

    by tommy terror

Most authorities agree that the resurrected Joan Of Arc was a fraud, and that Joan's brothers were unscrupulous shysters looking to make a quick buck. There are many interesting variations on Joan's story - one would have it that she really was a witch, the Maid in a coven that were her "voices". The only substantial argument for this theory is that she must have had some help when the Grand Inquisitor put the questions before her, for they were delivered in writing and answered in writing and of course Jeanne could neither read nor write. But this is all irrelative for the power of her story lies with the little miracles that are really astounding. I cried when I first researched her story, it's unbelievable and none of the filmed or staged versions have thus remotely captured the true potential.

    AKA Best Picture 1999

    by funmazer

I'm saying it right now, right here, and for the record- Joan of Arc will win Best Picture. It's got it all. A great director. A screenwriter OTHER than the director (5th Element was cool, script was a bit weak), takes place in the past, violent, involves actual events, has costumes, involves a war, takes place in another country, and is probably gonna be long. Sure fire lock for Best Picture. Sorry, Green Mile won't win because it involves magic. Period. And it takes place in America. 2 strikes. Just letting you know right now. Anyway, that's my dirt. You just wait!!!

Good Trailer, Hope the Film is as Good

    by specimen

The trailer was beautifully shot. Most of the actors are very good (Milla Jovovich doesn't quite qualify, but she has potential). And Besson is an amazing visual stylist, and not a bad story teller either. Granted, Fifth Element was completely cheesy, but Leon, Nikita, and The Big Blue (european cut) were really good. I'm very interested in hearing Eric Serra's score for this one, too. At the very least, it should be stylistically terrific. At most, it should be a great film.

    website is awesome

    by tom416

First, the minseries was awesome. Leelee was exceptional (except for
her promoting being the first virgin actress to play JOA).
Second, this movie will be great to watch, just like all of Luc's movies.
Third, I clicked on the link to the JOA website and it blew me away--because of this I will pay the $7 to see this flick.
Fourth, Don't you just wanna do Mila?

    Mercenary waitress for hire

    by bravenewsquirrel

Amazing teaser trailer! It's so cool to see that more and more movies are taking advantage of teasers. There are three Joan of Arc movies on slate for 99 (Joans being Milla, Leelee, and Mira) and the better distance they have in their titles the better distance they have in the whole territory. Each movie looks to be taking a different approach to the legend (a pretty factual one, yes) and the titles will help to keep them clear in the minds of the audience. So, I really see no problem in calling it the Messenger... The teaser fades and drifts in the titles Joan of Arc has received over time (ie saint, heretic, hero... I don't remember which ones were actually used), and really brings accent to the movie being called The Messenger-- as if.. this is the way we see it, she was a messenger of God (even if that's just for emotional effect). Another thing I thought was reeely cool about the teaser (which appears to be all original)... well, let me just go into detail... it opens to a strict horizontal shot of a meadow of sunflowers, there is the silhoutte of a girl holding a rod playing in the meadow. During the whole thing (if i remember right) the sunflowers are in focus, not the silhoutte. As the scene is repeated it evolves (sorta like a Lion King, Hakuna Matata thing) and by the end the silhoutte is of a woman, with a sword. She swings the sword, and there's a cut to the head of a sunflower which, cut by the sword, and in perfect focus and perfect color, tumbles down like the head off a horseman. The whole thing really gives you the feeling of feminity juxtaposed to the warrior like nature of Joan. Quiet, serene, noble, lethal. There are your four words to describe the entire teaser.

    Dismay.

    by mccrabcakes

    Alright.

    Luc Besson is vastly overrated.

    The Professional was horrible.

The Fifth Element was very close to being the worst movie I have ever seen in a theatre.

    Milla Jovovich can not act.

Luc Besson is very possibly clueless.

    This movie will be horrible.
    Thank you. -Crawdaddy McCrabcakes

    Eric Serra rocks too...

    by bigjackiev

We all know Besson is great, but someone mentioned Serra above whom I have completely forgotten...he's awesome! I think the score to the 5th Element is greater than the movie. An easy feat according to some, but when it came out, I thought it would garner an Oscar nod for score...The Professional score (thought I have yet to buy the CD and listen to it sans visuals) is great too...viva Besson et Serra! ...is viva Spanish or French? or both?
