I had a hypothesis back during the 1st and 2nd seasons that the reason Kenny always died was because he had more 'adult' (read: sexual) knowledge than the other kids. It was always Kenny that knew what dildos were, etc. Later episodes didn't confirm that hypothesis though.

this episode will be good. then next week there will be a "shocking" cartman episode, then an insane stan marsh-esque episode. then a cartman/butters episode based off a popular movie that week. all funny. then four mediocre episodes, probably involving some secondary characters no one cares about. happens every time.

And it's not really a stretch to picture the Disney channel or whomever runs the Jonas Brothers handing out purity rings to nine year olds. Indoctrination starts early.

    by thusspakespymunk

I'm kind of surprised at Matt and Trey, honestly. Usually, they tend to make fun of deserving targets, and they're usually not cruel about pop culture entities that don't smack of self-importance. This strikes me as mean-spirited, mocking the Jonas Brothers when the Jonas Brothers haven't really done too terribly much to deserve ridicule. They make fun music and entertain millions of kids. What a crime. The Purity Ring aspect is for them - not for everyone else.

The Jonas Brothers are a legit version of the tweeny-bopper bands of the 90s - except that these guys write their own music, play their own instruments, don't lip-sync in concert and are really the same as their image on tv. It's a pity that the SP guys had to attack them without their usual wit - while funny, the episode's efforts to attack the Jonas Brothers fell flat because these guys are just musicians doing their thing, and personally I find them far less affected than Bono/U2, who are far more deserving of this kind of "social issue" slammitude.

Not that I think they're anything but a bunch talentless, insipid little gaywad Jesus queers, but if you watch the SP episode again, you'll see that it doesn't really make fun of the JB that much. It shows them as non-cynical and genuine. It's Disney that's the target.

The best South Parks are the ones that you just KNOW there's going to be a lawsuit waiting in the wings threatening to pull this episode off the air. Same happened with the Scientology episode. Make it contraband and then EVERYONE is going to have to go find it and watch it. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney had a financial stake in the episode if only to profit off of them attacking it. by thomaspynchon

Seriously. It was one thing when the last bunch of episodes of South Park were complete shit, but this just stupid. And before you SP apologists talk shit about me mentioning this, you should at realize that a)the guy made all of these points in September in front of an audience largely comprised of their fans and b)Comedy Central is currently running his stand up in New York in which he responds to peoples vitral against him for making these points by putting together a rather intelligent defense. So go ahead, talk shit on me for bringing up the obvious, but do you remember when South Park was a great show? It's been a while. I thought they'd come back after all these months and realize how awful their last bunch of episodes were, but nothing changes. by prof. pop-cult

I mean, they went full out and viciously parodied Mickey Mouse. They didn't make up a fictitious though obvious analog to Mickey and the Disney company. They actually appropriated the Mickey frickin' Mouse character and the Disney name. And to add further insult, they mocked Grey's Anatomy (which is owned by Disney). WOW. Just WOW -- to hear things like Mickey Mouse calling the Jonas brothers "faggots" and all.

that the Jonas Brothers were interviewed before the Oscar broadcast, appeared on SNL, everywhere you turned (pop culture wise) it was the freakin Jonas Brothers. So, it makes sense that Matt & Trey used them as the tip of the iceburg to take on Disney. The idea that Disney has been using sex, but carefully coded and hidden sex, to sell their product has been around for years. Remember the phallic symbols that were visible in various posters, like The Little Mermaid?BTW, do you think Mickey growing in size and attacking the town was a Dr. Manhattan reference? And as always, you gotta love Butters.."Uhh, whats a BJ?"

Did anyone else notice that Kenny's picture at the funeral, looked a lot like that Caylee Anthony picture with her hands under her chin? Don't know if it was just me because no one else has talked about it, but was just wondering if anyone else saw that.

My only small gripe. . .

    by jimmay

While the Disney/Dreamworks feud is legendary, it's largely just that, a legend of the past. Disney recently signed and agreement to distribute Dreamworks' live action films for the next few years, so the references were a little dated. Still, good episode overall. I'm a big fan of traditional Disney, the films and the parks, but the modern Disney channel and its absurd empire are a site of horror to behold, and its about time people started mocking the company's shameless tween-pimping. By the by, what happened to Eisner? After ruining Disney's live action film division, birthing the failure that is Disney's California Adventure and letting the feature animation division descend into a point where Pixar had to come save them, I think he's become a pariah of sorts in the entertainment business industry. ...Then there were all those direct to video sequels. . .

    Mel Gibson is Jewish material

    by happy boy

Good point Herakles. I guess Cartman is Jewish material as well. Southpark is just a really really important show as these intelligent talkbacks illustrate. V'Shael I aint Christian nor am I Jewish not that it matters. You're a pussy for typing "that SOME Christians are re-tar-ded." You watch the show is it about sugar coating? If you're gonna defend the show defend it. South Park thinks "Christians are retarded." Not SOME but that the fundamental concept, genesis and practice of the religion is bullshit and you have to be stupid to believe in that crap and therefore deserve to be mocked because you're a tool. On the show the more you believe in it the more stupid you are. I'm as atheist and socially moderate as you can get so really I dont care what people believe personally nor do I feel the need to make myself feel superior by slamming people's faith meanspiritedly like SP does, but it's actually pretty funny that with anyone who disagrees with you... you automatically go to compare him to your "satan" Bill O'Reilly. I must be hopped on prescription drugs and molest my interns right? Clearly I'm a badguy with political badthink. Cuz I have a different opinion from you. But I guess it shows you the intellect and maturity level of South Park purists.

As for it being politically subversive, everyone from SNL to your grandmother has already been riding Disney for over a decade... you asshats REALLY that impressed at the "subversive" nature of going at Disney?

while I was typing out my reply to V'Shael. As I say South Park viewers are smart. Cartman is Jewish material of course. I stand corrected because mentioning Jew in a sentence is in fact equivalent to lampooning Judaism's excesses in the same manner Stone and Parker go after Christianity, Scientology and other faiths they disapprove of. One is attacking the integrity of a religion, other is a kid acting stupid saying dumb things but of course that's Jewish material. Also Kyle's cousin is Jewish so that's more Jewish material. Thanks for clearing that up. Also pointing out Mel Gibson is a douche... haha ripping satire and commentary on Jews SP touche well done! Also I think I saw Kenny licking an icecream one episode so that's a commentary on the National Dairy Council. That South Park how do they THINK of it. wipes tear from eyes

I always saw South Park at ripping on fundamentalism in any religion. They attack people not for their beliefs, but for the unethical and immoral way in which some extremely
religious people manipulate their beliefs to fuel their own agenda. The abstinence thing is a part of that, as I know people who have attended Catholic school who were taught blatant lies such as condoms provide no protection for STDs. Such fundamentalists NEED to be lampooned, as far as I'm concerned.

However in this case, did you watch the show? I thought it obviously came down against the way in which corporations like Disney exploit Christian values for their own gain. I didn't get the anti-Christian vibe at all. The "Christians are re-tar-ded" comment was exactly what you just mentioned: a kid acting stupid, saying dumb things.

These guys have ridiculed all religions, at one point or another (except maybe the Eastern religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism, ect - possibly because we're not faced with the hypocrisy of such religions on a daily basis).

Disney. I mean most people know by now the character had personality and was developing into a crazy little bastard before he became Disney mascot and Mr. Perfect. Secondly, I think the confusion may be that I was talking about the show as a whole, and then the specific episode (and then the show on the whole again). The points were separated in fancy paragraphs (ooooooh!), and it may have been more clear then (stupid lack of formatting). Out of curiosity, if you still see discrepancies, could you point them out? Sometimes people take something the wrong way, and sometimes they see things that you miss yourself. I'd appreciate the feedback.

It was saying that its not anybody's place but your own to decide if you're going to smoke, and that people like Rob Reiner force their own views onto others when they have no right to. I'm not a smoker, but I think its horse shit that the government has decided it can tell a private business that it can't allow smoking in its establishment. You don't like second hand smoke? I too was not expecting Mickey Mouse to appear. Sure, this show has attacked Hollywood sacred cows, but, I can't fully explain, Mickey Mouse was one of the personalities I least expected them to tackle. I don't know why -- I guess maybe it's because he's the mascot representing one of the major, powerful studio rivals to the parent of Comedy Central. And they totally ripped not only the Disney company, but Grey's Anatomy, too. So this definitely wasn't an attack on the Jonas directly, but on the Disney company overall.

It's about being for personal freedom because everyone else is too fucking retarded to put your fate into their hands. And EVERY authority figure on this show is portrayed as a retard. Some people think this show is liberal or conservative, but once you understand that it's libertarian, the messages are pretty consistent and not contrarian for the sake of being contrary. In all fairness, JB's weren't really attacked in the ep...

    by alpeter3

Just my opinion, but to those on the board that are saying "Why attack the Jonas Bros? They keep to themselves... blah blah blah...", I recommend you watch the episode again. In truth, SP didn't really attack the Jonas Bros much at all.

Now personally, I think the JB's are corporate sellout douchebags at best. But that's me. I'm not Trey or Matt and I don't speak for them. But regardless of how I view them, the reality is that they were really more portrayed as innocent victims in this episode than as "the bad guys".

Mickey/Disney was the real bad guy. I think the point they were trying to make was that corporations like Disney are just as evil and greedy as any other company, but people like to defend Disney because they sugar-coat their corruption with things like "Purity Rings" and "Christian Values" and other BS. And the idiots of the world buy into it (literally BUY into it) and continue to flock to the local Crap-Marts to buy yet another Disney Princess dvd for their daughter, or the cinematic abortion that was "Cars" for little Trevor and Madison.

In fact, the Jonas Bros characters in the episode actually tried to stand up to Mickey Mouse and said "We don't want to sell sex to little girls", and Mickey kicked the crap out of them. So really they were more victims in this episode than antagonists.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents on the matter. Again, I personally have no problem with people bashing the JB's (note "JB" is "BJ" backwards, not sure if that was intentional or not). But the fact is they simply weren't bashed in the episode. At least they weren't bashed any further than being a gay boy band, but really, name one boy band today that isn't gay.

    that's right cloudrider

    by _maltheus_

If you choose to inject heroin, then yes, no drug dealers should be punished. Why should they be punished for a decision you made? The same is true of smoking. And second hand smoke is mostly in your control. You don't have to live with a smoker. You don't have to patronize businesses that permit smoking. And catching a whiff of it outdoors sure ain't gonna give you lung cancer. As for drunk driving, that's not a personal choice if it endangers others, we're talking "personal" choices here. "Big tobacco" may have told lies, and that's fraud, but nobody in their right might could believe that inhaling smoke was somehow good for you, so it comes across as disingenuous to blame them now. They're no worse than the "big food" companies giving everyone the diabetes.
Perhaps there should be two sets of laws in society. One set for those who feel they need to be protected from themselves and another set for the grown ups who accept responsibility for their own actions. No doubt, most people would choose to be in the latter set. As for the so-called authorities, they clearly do more harm than good, so I'll take my chances without their "protection." All evil in society stems from the coercion of others. ALL evil, NO exceptions. You're preaching a much more evil philosophy that the tobacco companies ever have.

i'm saying a little control is fine

    by cloudrider`

just like you said, if it endangers others, then it's not a matter of personal choice anymore. cops pull over drunk drivers. you're saying the authority in this case is wrong? so how does forcing smokers out of non-smokers's way any different? i think it's becuase you belittle the effect of the secondhand smoke. just because it doesn't kill you on the spot like a car crash might, doesn't mean it cannot kill you still.

and big tobacco "may have told lies", you said? MAY HAVE? did you miss the part where the supreme court made them pay for being outright liars?
the only reason tobacco is not yet banned is not because the authority favor personal freedom of choice, but becuase the tobacco lobby gives money to politicians all the time. some $100.000 a day i read.

bars can still be bars and serve beers without the room being filled with cigarette smoke. smokers can still smoke in the comfort of their own home. and non smokers can still enjoy beer in a bar without fear of lung cancer. isn't that a win win for everyone?

why is that so appaling? you want to drive, then dont get drunk. you want to enjoy beer in public place, then dont spread cancer. it's that simple.
