Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins now have some victims for Whedon and Goddard's CABIN IN THE WOODS

Published at:  Mar 10, 2009 5:18:42 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm not a big Joss Whedon fan... I know, sacrilege, right? Not my thing, but I try not to begrudge his fanbase their enjoyment... even when they make it really hard for me by holding his work up as untouchable brilliance.

That said, I'm very curious about this movie, CABIN IN THE WOODS which Joss Whedon has co-written with Drew Goddard, who will direct. I think Whedon's already putting himself up on a pedestal by saying this is the horror movie to end all horror movies, which honestly puts anyone who isn't a Browncoat automatically in the position of going, "Oh, yeah? We'll see about that."

Now, I've talked to people who have read the script whose reactions vary wildly. I know a true-blue horror fanatic who thought the script was stupid, saying it's just an updated version of SCREAM. I also talked to someone who thought it was amazing, that what Whedon meant wasn't that it's the best horror film ever, but that he throws every formula, creature and horror cornerstone into one flick.

I will probably read the script myself sometime in the near future out of sheer curiosity. If he can make me a believer, count me impressed.

News came out today via a press release from United Artists regarding to the studio casting up this flick. We already know Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR) and Bradley Whitford (WEST WING) are the two leads (the aspect of the movie that has me even slightly interested), middle-aged guys who apparently unleash this hell on teenagers in a cabin... in the woods.

Now they've got a bulk of their teens. Forgive me if I don't recognize these names or faces, but you guys might know one or two of 'em. Kristen Connolly, Fran Kranz, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison and Jesse Williams. I IMDB'd them and they all look the type... young twenty-somethings... that would be on the receiving end of some horrible events. For most of them this film will be the first time I see what they bring as performers.

So, yeah. Count me cautiously optimistic, with a little "prove it" snobbery thrown in for good measure. You?

Please Ask About Joss Whedon's "Goners"

    by media messiah

Never heard a review of that script, or a peep about the premise, but it seemed like it was going to be something very special...the first film post Serenity, that Whedon would direct, that, or "Wonder Woman"? Then "Wonder Woman" was pulled-out from under Whedon's feet at Warner Brothers, and things got strange elsewhere, specifically, where "Goners" is concerned.First--before I continue, here's a little back history on "Goners". Universal Studios bought the script for "Goners" about 3 years ago, and gave it the big green light. Joss Whedon stated that the story was like Buffy, a female empowerment tale...but somehow different, and unique. He said he was passionate about the project, again, so much so that it would be his first post Serenity directing gig, if his then schedule with Wonder Woman, didn't get in the way--and then, suddenly...nothing? Save for information coming-out that they, Universal Studios, would not be making the film, all details of the movie "Goners", have dried-up? Since then, there has been no talk of Whedon's "Goners"...either being placed in turn-around at Universal Studos, or whether he, Whedon, has, or is, attempting to buy back the script--just nothing? Everything went into one big black void...and Whedon won't talk about the project anymore? What the hell happened to it???PS to Whedon: You promised us Goners, deliver what you promised. I'm still rooting for you. Good luck, and...are you wearing those thong underwear that I sent you! Hehe...just joking...everybody calm down already, especially all you Media Messiah haters,...Joss isn't my type--I like the ladies!

"I was kidding. Hopefully, they'll still want to see horror films, because I love them. It's just that Drew and I have a lifelong love of lots of horror movies. This is a representation of our comments on horror movies, as well as our attempt to do a straight-up, balls-out, really terrifying horror movie. Obviously there will still be representatives. I was being facetious. I believe you'll find I often am"

So strange that this even has to be clarified...

Whedon talks about how the whole "cabin in the woods" is itself a whole sub-genre of horror.

so long as the 20-something kids in the woods aren't as obnoxious as the Cloverfield kids, I'll be interested in seeing this movie.

But something tells me they will be annoying, and I'll want to strangle them all with their Facebook accounts.

I'm not sure who is more naive

    by buffywrestling

People believing expressively in a producer who is knowingly pimping his show or for Joss making the joke in the first place, which never transfers well in type.

Whedon and Goddard are fucking geniuses in my book...

    by a goonie

...so I'm interested in whatever they choose to tackle. But a slasher flick in the woods?! Now that's right up my alley. I especially like the idea of Jenkins hacking up some teens. This sounds great.

Actually everyone except Quint understands that Whedon was joking. But I'm guessing Quint was just mad because he was planning to say the same thing about The Home. I mean he already explained to us how amazing he is at creating characters because he comes at it just like Pixar.
