    by IAmJack'sUserID

    Or does it? Fascinating...

  • March 5, 2009, 11:32 p.m. CST

    Holy shit

    by tolomey

    That looks amazing. Seriously.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:33 p.m. CST

    by MetiphisLabs

That got the hairs to stand up.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:34 p.m. CST

Not sure how I feel about the squeaky voice on Spock ...

    by Hercules

but that music by the Lost guy is crazy, man!

  • March 5, 2009, 11:35 p.m. CST

This looks all kinds of awesome.

    by noncents

    Crossing fingers.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:36 p.m. CST

    by TheWrathOfSean

    The chorus really got me.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:36 p.m. CST

by Unknown Canadian THAT'S a good trailer! Call me officially fucking excited about this one!

  • March 5, 2009, 11:37 p.m. CST

The only thing that could make me sad...

by Breotan linking this to the Berman/Braga stuff in any way whatsoever. That would make me sadder than seeing glowing blue junk on an imax.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:38 p.m. CST

Even if I hate this I'll love it

    by Jodet

New Kirk and Spock? Let's face it - this is the holy grail of media science fiction.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:39 p.m. CST

So Kirk became Captain because he called "DIBS"???

    by TheGhostWhoLurks

Bet that was the LAST time Spock decided to take a bathroom break in the middle of his shift... :)

  • March 5, 2009, 11:39 p.m. CST

    by Julius Dithers

It shows promise, but doesn't deserve the TFD seal of approval yet.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:40 p.m. CST

That looks good. It's not Star Trek.

    by kabong

But for people who know nothing . . .

  • March 5, 2009, 11:40 p.m. CST

The only nitpick I have is...

    by Breotan

Kirk is younger than just about everyone else on the ship this time. But, I suppose people want to see the whole crew and not just Kirk and this was the only way to do it.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:42 p.m. CST

    I'm Waiting for 1080p Quicktime...

    by petedrinksduff

before i watch this sucker, anything less is unworthy! I hate youtube, it's like watching VHS when you have access to Blu Ray.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:44 p.m. CST

    by Mullah Omar

If that part got cut from the theatrical version, I'm going to wait for the DVD.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:44 p.m. CST

It'll be the first Star Trek film I'll see in a theater

    by Spifftacular Squirrel Girl

Even though I kind of like to think that seeing Galaxy Quest kind of counts.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:44 p.m. CST

    by petedrinksduff

All the badrobot trailers hit youtube first! Sucks!

  • March 5, 2009, 11:45 p.m. CST

    Looks Awesome!!!

    by SuperTrooper

Saw this trailer last week at Wondercon. The crowd went nuts after they saw this. The shot of the planet imploding in on itself looks amazing. ILM has done a fantastic job on the special effects. I am more excited than ever to see this after watching this new trailer.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:45 p.m. CST

    by petedrinksduff

get that HD link up PRONTO...

  • March 5, 2009, 11:45 p.m. CST

    Kirk already sang...

    by Breotan

...that row-row-row your boat song. What more do you want?

  • March 5, 2009, 11:48 p.m. CST

Kirk wants to live like 'common people'...

    by petedrinksduff

and now he can cos he ain't in the one! Price, Line, NE - GO - TIA - TER

  • March 5, 2009, 11:49 p.m. CST

    by codymr

a great 2 minutes... well I guess we'll see if Abrams can make this hold up 2 hours+. <P> This may actually work.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:50 p.m. CST

Well I've now watched it about a dozen times now

    by tolomey

I was very, very unsure of this movie. Kirk et all are icons in the truest sense of the word. However, it looks like JJ has gone all out on this. It looks epic, and again, I mean that in the truest sense of the word.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:52 p.m. CST

Shame Berman and Braga weren't involved...

    by BiggusDickus

...kidding!<p>Looks...interesting. What the hell, I'm there.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:52 p.m. CST

    by petedrinksduff

I'd love to watch JJ squirm on that!

  • March 5, 2009, 11:55 p.m. CST

    it still looks ridiculously shiny

    by Stugart

I really hate the set design for this one.. oh well. Beginning was stupid again, but there was some worthwhile shit in there I suppose. However, why don't we know how involved Nimoy is going to be in the fucking film yet?

  • March 5, 2009, 11:58 p.m. CST

Every great (or good) movie has one thing in common...

    by RandySavage

... it began with a great(or good) script. <p> Directors can (often) make a poor films out of good scripts, but the reverse is not possible. <P> In Star Trek, you've got two middling screenwriters. Temper your expectations.

  • March 5, 2009, 11:58 p.m. CST

im interesred in hearing thoughts opinions

    by southafricanguy

on who thinks this movie (fucking awsome trailer) can cross over to the mainstream movie audiance and become a big hit. I mean its still trek for gods sake. Could this movie possibly make (dare i say it)...trek cool??

  • March 6, 2009, midnight CST

    by santoanderson

  • March 6, 2009, midnight CST

one thing is for sure though, going by that trailer

    by southafricanguy

this will be the most epic and fully realised trek universe put on screen. And I think it will be the most successful trel ever as well. But will non fans, and even those that dislike trek, go for it?

  • March 6, 2009, 12:01 a.m. CST

    Holy Mary Mother Of Jesus...

    by deanbarry

How fucking COOL is that!!!! Fuck the haters and the purists. That looks like pure, unadulterated filmic eyeball fellatio right there. Its the kinda shit I'll be taking the day off work to go see. Awesome.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:02 a.m. CST

im really hoping its batman begins/casino royale

    by southafricanguy

and not superman returns/guy ritchie's Sherlock Holmes (at least going by the script)

  • March 6, 2009, 12:03 a.m. CST

    by petedrinksduff

O couldn;t wait. Thats the best fuckin trailer EVER made! Take notes McG! The music totally makes it!! Uhura sounds a bit high pitched, as does spock, but Pine is perfect! Fuck me JJ, give me this NOW!!!!!

  • March 6, 2009, 12:03 a.m. CST

i had the same reaction deanbarry

    by southafricanguy

right there with you dude. And im a lapsed trekkie, have not gone to see the movies or watch the tv shows in years, but this has me excited about trek for the first time in my adult life

  • March 6, 2009, 12:04 a.m. CST

I've been sayin' it for 10 damn years, ain't I been sayin' it Mi

    by iamnicksaicnsn

As cool as Syler is, he was not appropriate for this role. He really doesn't have the gravitas to pull off a Spock role. And they haven't even made him emotionless it seems. <p> But oh well, that was a freaking amazing trailer. </p>

  • March 6, 2009, 12:05 a.m. CST

I'm With Herc - Spock is a Baratone, But Barring That...

    by Read and Shut Up

...muh - thah - fuck - ah! <p> <p> This looks awesome. "Fire EVERYTHING!" Dayam.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:05 a.m. CST

    by petedrinksduff

Watched it again and it still kicked me right in the Roddenberry's! Well Done BadRobot!! Well Done!

  • March 6, 2009, 12:07 a.m. CST

but dude it can be hard to judge completely

    by southafricanguy

by a trailer, remember so many peoples reactions to danial graig? And he turned out to be an amazing bond. lets giver syler the benefit of the doubt.. for now That trailer is so damn cool, we must assume JJ has some idea of what hes doing...right?

  • March 6, 2009, 12:08 a.m. CST

    Nice trailer.

    by veritasses

Abrams has a good eye for action and knows how to bring out the most from his actors. I just hope Orci and Kurtzman's screenplay holds up.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:08 a.m. CST

Is this going to involve Time Travel???

    by the_scream

Because if it is then I might just walk out of the theatre. They have done time travel to death on ST to the extent where nothing makes sense anymore. In the films, we had the Voyage Home, Generations (yes it was), and First Contact. Now we here Eric Bana referring to Kirk's life as a captain suggesting he has come back through time to kill Kirk and change the past. Please tell me the plot isn't this lame.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:08 a.m. CST

    Michael Giacchino kicks ass

    by santoanderson

Man that guy deserves an oscar. On the upside, I will laugh as I walk past the picketers outside the theater wearing their TNG unitards screaming, "It's not canon!"

  • March 6, 2009, 12:09 a.m. CST

As a Star Wars fangirl, yes I'd pay money to see this

    by Spifftacular Squirrel Girl

And I've never really liked Star Trek in any form. I think the Wrath of Khan movie is entertaining but every other incarnation just never did anything for me and I think part of the problem is that it always seemed like everything Star Trek was so steeped in years and years of continuity. <p> The fun part will be going to see this with my bf who is a pretty big Star Trek fan and what his opinion is going to be compared to my own.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:09 a.m. CST

so what do you guys think the reaction of non fans to this movie

    by southafricanguy

what do your non fan friend or family think? Or even those that hate trek?

  • March 6, 2009, 12:10 a.m. CST

Eric Bana looks so good in this.

    by iamnicksaicnsn

The new Harry Potter trailer actually looks ok, I can't wait to see Watchmen tomorrow, Transformers 2 looks like big stupid crazy fun, this is going to be a really cool next couple of months I wager.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:11 a.m. CST

    this is not Trek

    by pencil-man

This is what Star Wars should have been. You know why? Because of all the WAR.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:12 a.m. CST

thanks for answering mt question squiral girl

    by southafricanguy

but there is a real star wars vibe to it isnt there. There is a focus on kinetic movement, huge action, and very colorful whiz bang dont you think?

  • March 6, 2009, 12:12 a.m. CST

I never got into the old movies because....

    by santoanderson

It seemed like half of them were made by the actor's themselves and their massive incomprehensible egos. Their big, fat, red, Travelocity promoting egos.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:13 a.m. CST

    New Star Trek....well

    by Mr. Evolved

I mean, it looks cool. It looks awesome. That is why I don't know about it. When I am watching it it just doesn't feel like Star Trek. I'll go in with an open mind and will probably love the movie, but deep down I don't think I'll ever view it in the same universe as the old Trek I know.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:14 a.m. CST

yeah, jj is doing to trek what someone desperately needs

    by southafricanguy

to do to star wars. Please get it the fuck away from lucas..

  • March 6, 2009, 12:15 a.m. CST

    The Squid in Watchmen...

    by victor82

....does a cameo as Bana's ship in Star Trek. JJ is returning Action and Adventure to Star Trek. Fat Shat? Out with the Prancing Ponies...

  • March 6, 2009, 12:18 a.m. CST

    What's the music?

    by eirk393

Can anyone tell me what the music used on this trailer is from?

  • March 6, 2009, 12:19 a.m. CST

african guy-we shall call it "batman royale"

    by supercowbell4therequestformorecowbell

dont even like star trek, never seen a trek movie either but this looks good. like really good.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:19 a.m. CST

    by blindambition238

    I liked that.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:20 a.m. CST

Star Trek was never about action

    by RowdyRoddyStriper

They miss the point as usual, though the visuals look dope.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:20 a.m. CST

    by onemanarmy

looks almost as scary as when he played Chopper...oddly enough one of his ears looks mangled in this as well. Nero is gonna be a bad ass <p> Nimoy is simply listed as Old Spock on imdb, no telling how much screen time he's got. <p> Can't wait to see Rachel Nichols in green skinned Orion sexiness.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:20 a.m. CST

    Also, anyone know the soundtrack?

    by blindambition238

Pretty good trailer music, which like most other ones I like, feels frustrating familiar.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:21 a.m. CST

They're clearly trying to make the comparison to Batman Begins .

    by DRayMorton

. . . with that score, which is a complete rip-off. Who even directed this movie? It looks like Christopher Nolan puked, and that puke directed this movie.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:21 a.m. CST

    Not That Impressed- Where's Nimoy??

    by genrefanboy

Seeing as Niomy is so pivotal to this movie (or so we are led to believe) why have we only seen him for 2 secs in an internet only trailer. Guess the cutting room floor holds the answer.... ILM appear to have done a good job but still not one shot so far shown is the equal to what Trumball/Dykstra did with STMP's mega budget. Pretty space battles have been done to death before & even the planet imploding is similar to that shot in Generations where the Nexus wipes out VeridianIII. Urban looks & sounds good. Pike I can live with but Pegg as Scotty is badly miscast as is Yelchin then Quinto as fanboy favorite Spock is terrible he has no range and a homo voice!! Its just not logical captain.

    JJ's next mission: reboot TNG!

    by Greenlee

  • March 6, 2009, 12:24 a.m. CST

    pretty dope

    by juice willis

although, i wish romulans weren't barking orders in english. I miss the subtitled star trek baddies. christopher lloyd rocked klingonese like no other.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:25 a.m. CST

but it isnt the same trek dude

    by southafricanguy

is casino royale in the same universe as the connery or (heaven help us) the moore films. Is Nolans batman movies in the same universe as burtons or (please spare us all) shumakers? This is a new trek, lets let the old cintinuity go, its whats been hampering trek from appealing to a new fan base, and its whats hampered the writers from doing anythnig new becos they are always shoe horning everything into continuity

  • March 6, 2009, 12:25 a.m. CST

George Takei is "very glad" Shatner was not involved.

    by Greenlee

he said so during his week long announing gig on the Howard Stern show. He also mentioned Nichelle Nichols begged him to appear in Star Trek 5, so he did.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:27 a.m. CST

    I'll miss Romulus.

    by Greenlee

that's all I'll say about that.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:28 a.m. CST

great cowbell, thanks for answering my question

    by southafricanguy

you see thats the thing, i get why many people just dont like trek. But this looks like a real revamp/reboot that will do trek differently and give film makers new plaves to go with it without being always bogged down in what happened in the previous movies. trek need this

  • March 6, 2009, 12:30 a.m. CST

Umm, does Pike die in this?

    by TheWrathOfSean

There's a scene in an earlier trailer with Pike at the captain's chair, and in this one, McCoy says "We've got no captain, and no first officer to replace him." Maybe he comes full circle and sacrifices himself to save everyone similar to the original timeline? It was a ship full of cadets, if I recall correctly, so that would make sense.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:32 a.m. CST

    Where's NIMOY!!!

    by most excellent ninja

seriously, that would be a good way to make people go 'what the fuck?' or maybe they really are trying to push the whole reboot thing.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:32 a.m. CST

i was never a big bond fan before casino royale

    by southafricanguy

but that movie was the first time bond worked for me. And i have always been a batman fan, but i never liked any of the movies untill Nolan came and kicked all our asses. So I can see how non fans could really get into this new trek

  • March 6, 2009, 12:32 a.m. CST

    The music is from BUFFY!

    by blindambition238

It was the score for the final episode/ finale fight: <p> Track is called "final fight", from the episode 'chosen': <p> <p> Reaffirming my belief that the score from that series is REALLY underrated!

  • March 6, 2009, 12:33 a.m. CST

    by Rindain

Music is great. Saldana is hot. I also love how Kirk takes the captain's chair. Midnight screening for sure.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:34 a.m. CST

also, for all you non fans of trek

    by southafricanguy

what is it about the trailer or anything to do with this movie that makes you interested in trek now?

  • March 6, 2009, 12:34 a.m. CST

Hey, House's Cameron is Kirk's mommy?

    by symphy

Neat. :) <br><br>I think this looks good, but I agree that Star Trek is about intellectual problem solving, not action -- nearly all the best Trek episodes and movies have had more in common with Sherlock Holmes stories, not swashbuckling. We'll see.<br><br>Incidentally, I love the new Watchmen ads that use Massive Attack's "Angel" as the music. F-ing love that song, ever since West Wing used it for the First Daughter's kidnapping.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:37 a.m. CST

Impressed, particularly after reading this talkback

    by BlackBauer0320

The feedback on here is overwhelmingly positive. Perhaps the most I've ever seen. Looking forward to the QT version. Certainly goes a long way in showing how much the music can make a trailer, that's for sure.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:37 a.m. CST

    by blindambition238

Technically, this IS the same Trek as the ones before it. It's an alternate universe story that involves Bana's character going back in time from the original timeline, f'ing shit up in the past, then throwing off the regular continuity. <p> That's why he says "Kirk was a great man, but that was in another life".; <p> So actually, this is even better than a reboot; it's a primer for people (like me) who didnt really care about Trek before to get into the universe.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:37 a.m. CST

    hey symphy

    by southafricanguy

if you feel that way about trek you are going to hate what guy ritchies doing with sherlock holmes. Have you read the script? Its quite dumbed down for holmes, with a mystery you solve long before holmes does...

  • March 6, 2009, 12:37 a.m. CST

    by southafricanguy

    first decent trailer for this

    by SomaShine

    and i still dont care

  • March 6, 2009, 12:40 a.m. CST

That is one of the best trailer's I've EVER seen.

    by Shermdawg

And that's coming from someone that's had problems with this flick from the beginning.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:41 a.m. CST

    i agree blindambition

    by southafricanguy

thats why i think those clinging to continuity need to let it go. tHIS is a new begining and a fresh start. It will make trek accessible to a whole new audiance.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:42 a.m. CST

Apparently, the squid will be in Star Trek

    by Chuck_Chuckwalla

His agent convinced him that it would be a more high-profile part in that it skews a younger demographic mixed with an older, more established fanbase, with the added bonus of a small percentage of the total net profits. Plus, the exposure would give notoriety to his upcoming book tour, where he will be pimping his new autobiography; Squid: Mind, Body and Soul on Oprah's book club.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:43 a.m. CST

and even though yeah technically its the same universe

    by southafricanguy

it will be anew one by the end, its really crisis on infinite earths isnt it?

  • March 6, 2009, 12:46 a.m. CST

Also, one thing I'm likeing about Bana/Nero

    by blindambition238

He seems like he's going to be a really sympathetic 'villain'. Given the origin they're fleshing out in the comic series Herc (i think) is reviewing, and the way he says that like about Kirk being a great man in another life, it really seems like he's remorseful of what he's doing/ feels like he has to do. <p> Jesus fucking Christ. I'm analyzing a Star Trek trailer! Never thought I'd see this day come.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:46 a.m. CST

    Trek is NOT...

    by Pope Flick

...about the special FX. It's about whether or not things are going to be ok. And from the looks of it, they are in a bright and shiny way. Cannot wait, Top BO Grosser of the year.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:47 a.m. CST

Cool, but what's with the "dirty glass?"

    by Chesterfield Slacks

In all the action shots, it's a glare-flare festival. Looks like a lot of the other shots have smudgy glass in front of the lens too. Hopefully, it's a trailer-diversionary tactic for "unfinished" effects.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:49 a.m. CST

    by blindambition238

I guess we'll see with the movie, but from bits that leaked, it seems like Spock old and new are both trying to set it right throughout the movie. <p> And from the way Abrams and the writer's talked about it, they're more interested in using it as an intro to the greater universe, so they probably know a 'reset' would be too extreme. I'd imagine that would set even the causal fans of the series off!

  • March 6, 2009, 12:50 a.m. CST

So much for Smart Science Fiction...

    by Bones

Wow. That preview told me everything that I need to know about the new movie...Things blow up, The new Kirk is a tool, The New Spock sounds like an asthmatic Geek who had his magic cards stolen, and I have yet to hear Bones speak with a Georgia accent.<p> Yes, we get it--this will be the adrenaline rush of the early summer. But it won't be Star Trek. Which is too bad--because I always liked Star Trek...and if this is what the future holds, I'll pass.

    heres a question for everyone

    by southafricanguy

how successful do you think this movie could be (considering its trek)Any bo predictions? I think it will be the most successful trek ever, but I still think it could have trouble getting to the same level as things like lotr, potc, star wars, transformers etc (what Paramount have said they are aiming for with it) So I would guess 400-450 mil worldwide (remember that trek still has a huge stigma for many people, and its almost completely unknown outside north america, and some other english speaking countries, with the exception being germany. I live in South Korea and trek does not exist here, star wars, harry potter, transformers, spiderman are all massive here. But trek does nt exist. My Korean girlfriend has never heard of trek, and I cant even educate her because no rental store or sales store has trek or has even heard of it. And Korea devours Western pop culture

I hate Star Trek. Wrath of Kahn was good but everything else is shit to me. The trailers for this movie have me very excited for this. I saw this trailer before the Watchmen yesterday and it just got me real excited for May. This and Terminator are looking to be the must see blockbusters of summer. Wolverine Transformers and G.I Joe are looking like the ones to avoid.

  • March 6, 2009, 12:56 a.m. CST

    sorry popeflick

    by southafricanguy

no chance in hell trek will be top bo grosser. too many reasons to repeat. Wether we like it or not it will be Bays tf2:rotf. Read my above post. And at the end of the year there is still Cameron's Avatar. I would love to see trek become a heavyweight franchise, and maybe with sequals once the groundwork has been laid to create a new trel fan base. But I will bet money that trek will not be the top bo grosser of the year

  • March 6, 2009, 12:58 a.m. CST

not saying this will be good, but that is a damn good trailer

    by Gungan Slayer

I'm still annoyed at how this will fuck up continuity and I'm fucking pissed that we're still dealing with Kirk and Crew. I mean, really? Can't we move on with our lives and progress to something else in Star Trek other than Captain fucking Kirk and Crew? Don't get me wrong, I love them all to death, but PUH-lease.

    by Dogmatic

He may be no Khan but Bana's Nero just from the trailer looks awesome! Way better than that "It's time." line from the first trailer. I loved all the total space battle mayhem and Nero shouting "FIRE EVERYthing!!!!" This is gonna be so great. I got faith in the J.J.

    by aboriginal

and so does Trek. I've watched it from a TV tray on a 13" TV as a kid in re-runs on every station that aired it, had the model kit with the nacelles that kept breaking off so much the wad of glue was like chewing gum. I had the outfits I wore in 1st grade, 'cuz I was that hard core. I bought the toys, watched all the series and hit up the conventions. But, I grew up at some point. I still enjoyed it, but lost that feeling that I still saw in all those Trek nerds I knew I couldn't be. I never could go that far again, but I could respect the crazy that maybe wasn't so. This is getting something back for me that I sure miss from childhood. It looks good.

  • but be honest, the way it's being presented in these trailers is a bimbo-esque action movie..theres not even the vaguest hint of the cerebral Trek the Rodenberry concieved..OK fine, this looks exciting, but theres not a single thing there that seems Star Trek, if anything it's Star Wars part 7

  • March 6, 2009, 1:08 a.m. CST

    by blindambition238

But people also really go for things that can strike a balance between the 2, like TDK. <p> It wasn't really the smartest movie ever nor the most action packed, but it had respectable amounts of both to keep entertained and interested enough for folks to go back. <p> Of course ST has no chance of making those kinda numbers, cause it ain't no godamned Batman, but I think it can give the other sci-fi properties this year a really good fight if it can do those things. It already looks smarter than GIJOE or TF (not hard considering the nature of either IP) and action looks competitive right now.

  • March 6, 2009, 1:09 a.m. CST

    but Quantize

    by Bones

Every film that I like seems to bomb and every film that I think sucks becomes a hit. From the look of the two theatrical previews, this will be a hollow, shitty action film with big explosions and bad camera angles--and the name Star Trek tacked on, I will hate it, like I did Transformers, Dark Knight, the last three Star Wars movies--and pretty much every dumb, overblown, moronic film that Hollywood is putting out these days.<p> So, it will be a hit--because audiences don't have discriminating tastes anymore.

I agree, this isn't Star Trek

    by the_scream

It may be great and entertaining but it isn't ST. And I'm not a Trekkie. I just know that TNG is the sort of thing Roddenberry had in mind when he made ST. A show about space exploration, philosophy, ethics, science fiction. Sure it had action but it was never supposed to be like this or like most of the films they made. Nevertheless, most of the earlier films had action but not at the expense of the character and plot. TNG movies were just SW movies with a focus on Picard and Data. Fuck, now I think about it, maybe I am a Trekkie or Trekker or whatever they like to be called. Still, anyone else concerned this may involve time travel?

  • March 6, 2009, 1:17 a.m. CST

It is confirmed that Time Travel is invovled...and it is inferred that said time travel destroys or overwrites the previous Star Trek universe. Now, Orci has gone on record as saying that Time Travel only creates a tangent universe...but if that is so, why go back in time in the first place?<p> It is a polite way of saying to the fans "Sorry, but you won't be seeing new adventures in your old Universe again--but if you want to try new EXTREME TREK (Now with extra stunts and 'splosions! Now with 40% less intelligence and imagination, just the way the everybody likes it!)--the version of Star Trek you never knew you wanted (and probably didn't).<p> Personally, I am LOVING how the fans, so desperate for anything that is called Star Trek, are rushing to embrace this film. We'll see what there tune is after they have actually seen it...

let me guess.... Sex scenes, running away from explosions, quips at the end of each encounter, tension between the main characters. yup, this is just another summer popcorn flck. by blindambition238

You know I'm actually willing to give GIJOE a chance, if by a hair. <p> (I can feel the flames warming up) <p> If the reviews come out and say Stephen Sommer's decided to bring his Deep Rising and The Mummy 1 levels of action and self-aware fun to the movie I'll check it out. <p> But if it's everything he did after the Mummy 1, I'm staying home. <p> I don't look down on mindless action movies provided that they at least do their job and provided me with comprehensible and well staged action scenes, fun dialog and competent tell an interesting story, and not bore me with self-important filler. I know Stephen Sommers has been capable of both before, and hope he finds his way back this time. If not, I can always wait to see it on my inflight movie screen...

I see a few people evoking Gene Roddenberry, as though he is the messiah of the franchise. Let us not forget that "The Wrath of Khan" was the least Roddenberry-Esque movie and I think was done much to Gene's dissapproval, yet it is arguably the most popular Trek film from Trek fans and the mainstream. <br><br> So honestly, let's stop bringing up Gene as though it has to be done to approve him please, when your favorite Trek movies or episodes would probably tick him off to no end (maybe, maybe not, who knows.)

    Without ST:TMP...

    by Bones

...You wouldn't have the CGI-Effects-gasm you are so breathless to see...You wouldn't have anything Star Trek--maybe some Gold Key comic books and a few paperbacks.<p> And I have a surprise for you--The Motion Picture, while not perfect, is still a good movie. I mean, Isaac F*CKING Asimov was the science advisor on the movie (He wrote these things called BOOKS--you might have heard about them). He was the guy who kept yelling about how even though Star Wars was fun, you can't call it Science Fiction...because it isn't. There isn't any SCIENCE in it. If you watch REAL space travel, it is slow and graceful--Star Trek: The Motion Picture attempted to have Star-Wars or 2001: A Space Odyssey sized spectacle and reintroduce James Kirk and a revamped Enterprise, and also try to stay somewhat true to science in the bargain.<p> So, forgive me if the Idiocracy-version of Star Trek isn't impressing me right now...

  • March 6, 2009, 1:54 a.m. CST

    by LordEnigma

I know a fighter when I read one, and you are a fighter. Which is a good thing. The net is full of us fighters. Always fighting the good fight, but this is not a fight. Wrath of Khan is a good flick, but I always liked TMP better. Heck. I like Search for Spock and Voyage Home better, but that's just me. Which is the point: you are fighting against a shadowy object. You are fighting against OPINIONS. You are fighting against the SUBJECTIVE. Pick a fight you can win. This is not one of them. I am a fan of damn never ever genre of film. I can appreciate Transformers as much as I can appreciate La Haine. That's how it should work for every movie fan. If you are drawing a line. You are usually drawing a line that excludes something that you might really like, enjoy, or even love. So grow up, stop being a film snob, and love every bit of cinema. Not the parts of cinema you deem worthy, but even 2 minutes of a Kate Hudson movies. That's about as much as you can love from those type of films, but I am still making a point damn it. LOVE always better than HATE. Especially when it comes to film.

    Speaking of Seltzer/Friedberg

    by Series7

How come they get to do everything now, it stretches writers too thin because they don't live and breath it they just move from project to project. 10 years from now no one is going to go oh man Occri and Kurtzman were Star Trek gods, no why? Because they've made 30 other movie franchise since then. That is why the old shit is always better because it was always like one guys creation and baby. That's why shit like Terminator Salvation will be a good action movie but it won't be the next Terminator because they didn't even get Cameron a shitty producers job. The closest thing we have to that right now is Goyer with the Batman franchise, well for now anyway. Just saying, it may end up being a cool action movie, which we always hope for, but I don't know its not the same. Orrca and Klutz are just writers for hire.

  • March 6, 2009, 2:23 a.m. CST are correct about opinions...

    by Bones

It is really easy to see everything from a subjective point of view. I mean, you were the one sarcastically calling me "a really up person" and name-calling when you knew nothing about me--what my tastes were or what films I have seen. I have seen every Star Trek film as they have been released in theaters...for 30 years. Which, I guess makes me almost 36 now.<p> I have seen many films, from Bergman's The Seventh Seal to Santa Claus versus the Martians. And I have had strong opinions of many films, championing many that never got a chances and suffering through many that were very popular..and the inverse as well. There have been popular films, even franchises that I really enjoyed.<p> But, I guess, when it comes to Star Trek--there was always an almost tangible "Star Trek feeling" to those films, which the last two or three films lacked--a sense of maritime adventure mixed with humanism and exploration...but in the vastness of space. Star Trek was it's own thing--not Star Wars or any other type of science fiction property--and it was good at what it was.<p> And the truth is it's over.<p> My Star Trek has come to an end--and in it's place is this new thing--that I am wary of.<p> I really don't know if I will see this film in theaters. It was not made for me, I am not it's intended audience--it just bothers me that for the first time in 30 years, I am not looking forward to a new Star Trek film.<p> So, stop telling me I am a film snob. I am, like many here, an empassioned fan, who is disconnected and argumentative about it. Like, when they added all the unnecisary CGI to Star Wars and E.T., like when they rush a film to meet a release date rather than craft the film into the best possible version of what it could be. Those things that anger many of the people who visit or write for this site.<p> And forgive me for not buying your "Love is better than Hate" rhetoric when you are a rude jackass.

    by darthvedder81

I don't know if that's good or bad. I'm a big Wars fan and a very, very, very casual Trek fan. JJ Abrams loves GL and Star Wars (especially SITH) so the fact that it looks kinda like that doesn't suprise me. As long as it's entertaining who gives two shits whether it's "real" Star Trek or not?

  • March 6, 2009, 2:25 a.m. CST

Fuck yeah. Now we have 2 good movies this Summer.

I love science fiction but always had a sort of "meh" feeling towards the whole Star Trek thang. But the look and feel of this reboot has me actually looking forward to a Trek movie, and that's never happened before. I'd usually go and check them out anyways but this trailer looks fuckin sweet in comparison.

I think it was on last comic standing or something. This guy was talking about how old TV shows predicted pretty much most of the shit we use now except for Google. by LordEnigma

If you were. You would know where that "Really up person" line came from, and how it's more of being silly than anything else. You also must realize, that you are coming off as a film snob. Go read your post about the drivel. If anything; that's being a rude jackass to anyone who does not fall in line with your criteria of what's IMPORTANT AS CINEMA, and that fits the definition of FILM SNOBBERY. It does not make you a bad person or anything. It just makes you a fighter. You want to fight about things, but there's no winner. You like what you like, but it does not make what other people like shit. If you dislike CGI. Good for you. I hate to break it to you though, but it's 2009. It's not going anywhere. Also; how many here are disconnected? I think you are clearly at a crossroads with film, that many do not share. Some may share it, but it's your deal. If you want to fight. I am more than willing to fight you. If you want to be cool, and realize I never intended to offend you. I just wanted to share some things with you, then we are cool. If not; you can fight me all the live long day. Over something that has more to do with your disconnect to 21st century film, as if the story of aliens coming to this world and finding redeeming qualities in humanity is a bad thing, but that's a discussion for another day. Until then... chill out and go watch a movie you love, and stop spending time fixating on what you hate. It will drive you mental. I know. I have been there and back. I even took pictures!

Insurrection was the best trek ever.

    by Reelheed

...LOL. Not really. This is going to suck. You know how I can tell? It's the way they've treated space. Its classic. Every shit scifi looks the same. All the ships are constantly almost bumping into each other, there's shit floating about all over the place and it looks like a neon lit strip joint. This has 'Lost in Space' written all over it. Yes its all shiny but yet soulless and ugly at the same time. Also theres obviously this whole stupid "we're the only ship in the sector" bullshit going on that always bores me to tears with trek films. YAWN!

  • March 6, 2009, 2:59 a.m. CST

strangely i am also strangely optimistic about gijoe (more because i grew up reading the Larry Hama comics, and apparantly he has been a creative consultant on the movie. And the movie is supposed to be based more on his comics than on the cartoon) But I just dont trust Sommers one bit. He uses cgi really badly, and his movies are so unfocused. But he is good at doing escapist fun.

I always liked Trek a lot, but I hated the nerdiness of all the technobable. It always got in the way of story for me, and I never understood the point of it. This is the first time I can honestly say someone has given me a glimpse of a performance that I just might buy into 100%. Even in that brief shot Eric Bana convinced me what he was feeling was real, can't remember the last time I thought that about Trek. Screw continuity - all it's brought us is mediocre storytelling at best - FOR YEARS. It's long time someone said fuck it, and did something radical. Oh and the music's great whatever it's origin.

But thats not because of any hyperbol, its just based on what i have read and heard about it. For the record, it seems like Cameron is really swinging for the fences here. Thus I dont think there will be much middle ground. Either it will be a huge disaster or its going to be amazing. But given Cameron's track record of succeeding when the pressures on him and everyone expects him to fail, im willing to give him the benefot of the doubt until I at least see some footage

    by Fortunesfool

Look, the 3d concept Cameron is using (a window onto the scene as opposed to poking out of it) is going to rewrite the language of filmaking. The majority of shot structure and composition works because the depth of field is reduced to a flat 2d image. Most shots won't work as well in 3-D and we may see a new school of film-making come from this. It's why Avatar has been called a 'game-changer'. Star Trek will just be a forgettable piece of noisy, mass-market, dumbed down trash in comparison.

  • March 6, 2009, 5:07 a.m. CST

yeah I think you are right dude, Avatar really does have a chance of being a real 'game changer". What do you think about the rumour (apparantly confirmed by of the 12 minute pov sequence in Avatar. sound really interesting, if Weta and Digital Domain can pull it off

Well I did not know that. Interesting. Find it hard to believe Trek is not known in Japan though. <p>Hey, how do you know when you are south african? You know someone who knows someone who has met Nelson Mandela...ha sorry old joke :)

  • March 6, 2009, 5:17 a.m. CST

though i dont agree with you about trek

    by southafricanguy

i think it really just may be the best trek ever, and trek is iconic. This wont be forgotten, and we dont know yet if its been dumbed down. we will have to wait for the movie to make that judgement

  • March 6, 2009, 5:20 a.m. CST

    and south african guy...

    by Talkbacker with no name

on a side note, since you keep brigning it up, JJ would be promoting the fuck out of this movie worldwide if trek was known in places or not, it's what they do with tentpole movies innit

  • March 6, 2009, 5:22 a.m. CST

    well, think about it talkbacker

    by southafricanguy

trek is very un-anime, and the Japanese love that particulat style of sci-fi (ive lived in Japan too). really trippy ideas, kinetic balls out action, and really obtuse ideas. All things trek is nt. But jjs trek could change all that and make trek a really global brand if you will. Here in Korea its being really heavily promoted, though to Koreans its something completely new. my korean girlfriend loves sci-fi (i know how lucky am I?) and i would love to introduce her to trek, but its impossible to find here. So jjs trek will be her education

I agree that the potential, especially in Imax to place you right in the film is causing me to salivate. Even just being in the passenger seat of a jeep tearing through the jungle would be a thrilling experience. The problem with Cameron is that, for the most part, he does it first, and better than everyone else. I think, much like cinema history, we'll see a few great films as people start to discover this new tech, then Michael Bay will do Bad Boys 3D and it'll go tits up again.

  • March 6, 2009, 5:35 a.m. CST

yeah, you are right, gijoe will most likely be really bad, but just how bad. Shinyongsan Subway stop on line #4 (Yongsan Station) in Seoul will bring you to the largest electronics market in the world. I lived right down the road from it for almost 3 years, & I promise can get everything ever made with the Star Trek name on it in one box set. <p> You might have to become a regular customer (or just get in good with a few vendors) but they can and will get you anything you want for the money...which is usually pretty cheap.

for the record i read it some years ago when it was an abandoned project because it seemed it would never get made as special effects would never be good enough to do it justice. Im still not sure if they are. There is some damn ambitious stuff there (never mind that in all these years, plus that Laeta Kalogordis has worked on the script,im sure Cameron has added a lot of new ideas) The action set pieces could be really insane. almos tthe entire last third is just a series of huge action set pieces, very anime inspired. I think we are in for a real sci-fi treat..

  • March 6, 2009, 5:58 a.m. CST

    This looks great

I have probably seen about 2 hours worth of anything Start Trek in my whole life so it is safe to say that I am no Star Trek Fan. It looks like this is hitting the mark, getting non-fans interested. It is a shame that the name 'Star Trek' has just a geeky reputation that may keep mainstream audiences away from this, I fear its box office might be fairly low. I will probably have a real hard time trying to get someone to come and see it with me.

THATS EXACTLY what worries me dude, there is still a big stigma with trek, and thats why I really think that while this trek will be the most successful ever, I just cant see it doing star wars/hp/lotr/transformers business. But i think it will lay the ground work, once the perception of trek has been changed, for trek to become bigger than ever

Fuck time travel- the best stories involving that plot device have been done already. I would have loved to see a real reboot, something fresh and maybe innovative story-wise. It looks like they went super-conventional here.

Apart from Titanic, Jim Camerons movies have been the only one to consistently deliver on their early promises. With the typical Hollywood 'event' picture being a barely watchable collection of fast edited shots of people shouting and waving guns, the thought of Cameron returning to the genre with something interesting to say and a brand new way of showing it is more exciting to me than Alicia Witt in lingerie. I guess what i'm looking forward to most is a return to intlligent, well made film-making.

  • March 6, 2009, 6:27 a.m. CST

    It seems to me..

    by Fortunesfool

that a whole generation have now grown up with only bad film-making so critical faculties are at an all time low. It's the only explanation for anyone getting excited about that Star Trek trailer.

  • March 6, 2009, 6:34 a.m. CST

yeah, agree with you there fortunesfool

    by southafricanguy

its going to be sweet to see an event film that actually has the potential to deliver. Also its really should be a quite unique sci-fi movie. Cameron is just really unlike his pale imitators and I love that he does nt use shaky cam, mtv editing, and he actually devotes the middle act of his movies to characterization and plot development...imagine that

  • March 6, 2009, 6:38 a.m. CST

However, why are you so down on the new trek

    by southafricanguy

what do you have against jj? I did nt like cloverfield (just could nt get into it) but he did t direct that, but mi:3 was actually pretty good. In fact I would argue that jj is quite influenced by Cameron, the style of the lighting, and the way the action set pieces were filmed were quite Cameronesk.

  • March 6, 2009, 6:40 a.m. CST

do you just not like trek?

    by southafricanguy

jesus...that was a spectacular forgettable turd.. Nobody knows how this Star Trek is going to play out, but on Abrams previous efforts and the reactions here, either Star Trek is about to get a lot of new retard fans and lose the smarter ones...or JJ's doing a terrific job of hiding anything that resembles anything good about the Star Trek people with a brain like.

  • March 6, 2009, 6:48 a.m. CST

Abrams and the yuppies have got the Star Trek ball...

    by Carl's hat

...and they'll play it their way. Who cares if it bears no resemblance to the Star Trek it exploits? All in the name of money. Spotnitz did the same for "The Night Stalker" tv show of 4 years ago. Shatner goes up several notches in my book if he indeed does not appear in this.

    by logicalnoise01

gives us barely any story but a lot of teh feeling the movuie is goingf or. I'm a huge ST fanbeen watching it ever sicne I was a kid. I just finished DS9 last night on DVD and man was teh finale mis handled, lots of nice story telling but the editing and pacing was all wrong. But this trailer, had me crying. Seriously michale giacchino is is fucking amazing at what he does. I really can't wait. everything else I saw dripped with teh basics that made ST fun and wortyhwhile. JJ looks to be at least keeping real science in mind with this. I desperately await this.

  • March 6, 2009, 6:52 a.m. CST

    Couldn't disagree more, mate.

    by Fortunesfool

Oddly I enjoyed cloverfield. MI3 I thought was utter shit. He shot everything like and episode of Lost, all hand-held shaky-cams and spastic edits. I had no idea what was going on or where anyone was in relation to anyone else in the action scenes. The helicopter chase scene...someone fell out the copter and I only notice when they pulled them back in. You can't pretend something exciting is by shaking the camera a lot. You have to care what's going on and be shown it clearly. Look at Hitchcock. The master of sustaining tension. He did it through undertanding film technique, not by shaking a camera about.JJ is influenced by Cameron the same way Michael Bay is. They want to blow stuff up and make it look cool but they simply don't understand it on a technical level. Compare the bridge scenes from True Lies and Mi3 to see what I mean, Look at how Camerons shots and editing add to the tension and then release it as the limo goes off the bridge. Now look at MI3. When Cruise is under the car looking for the case, why's the camera shaking, where is everyone geographically in that scene. It's just a mess. It's fooling you into thinking something exciting is happening but actually showing you very little.

  • March 6, 2009, 6:54 a.m. CST

  • March 6, 2009, 6:57 a.m. CST

    and while i'm at it.

    by Fortunesfool

In MI3, why did the second helicopter follow them into the windmills, why not just fly above them and shoot them from there. Lazy ass writing and film-making.

  • March 6, 2009, 7 a.m. CST

    All really good points fortunefool

    by southafricanguy

yeah I also always thought mi3 ripped off quite a bit from true lies. Admittedly I have only seen mi3 once, and that was a few years ago, so maybe im not remembering well. are right the use of shaky cam by the current generation is starting to get really old. But do you like trek fortunesfool?

  • March 6, 2009, 7:03 a.m. CST

but you are right Cameron is a master at staging

    by southafricanguy

action set pieces, great sense of geography, no shaky cam or mtv editing, no overuse of close ups. He pulls the camera back and establishes very well what is going on. But I also love how he strings several action set pieces together and just keeps it going with each one building on the other. Think last third of Aliens, T2 or True Lies

  • March 6, 2009, 7:06 a.m. CST

well... it's not Star Trek but it blowed up shit real nice?

  • March 6, 2009, 7:10 a.m. CST

    by Fortunesfool

The set pieces are powered by the story coming to a climax, not to keep the audience awake. I like all the original gen Star Trek's although 5 is pretty poor. 2 and 6 are cracking films and 4 is good fun. Much of the enjoyment in them comes from the characters though, not the explosions and space battles, which is why I think JJ's film will fail. With the Mutt and Jeff writing duo of Kurtzman and Orci behind it, I couldn't be less excited. Lest we forget, these are the guys who wrote Transformers, a movie in which giant robots changing into cars and planes was the LEAST stupid idea.

The haters might disagree, but JJ did an awesome job with MI:3. It's the best of the three movies. The guy knows how to do action. Waaayyy better than Nolan in that department. Not to mention, that he knows how to construct a story within the confines of action. Giving it a balance. again, waayy better than Nolan in that department. I think my son might actually watch this. Personally, I think ST should be going forward, not back, but George Lucas and Chris Nolan sort of ruined the incentive to do so.

No offense, but if that is whats bothering you about this new Trek, I feel sorry for you.. letting yourself be so married to parts of the original that are just not worth worrying about. I don't see how they can keep the physical elements of the original, and this version not be viewed as a spoof. Let's get real, and get into the 21st century Star Trek.. quit living in the past my man!

    by Duck of Death

I'm guessing the people complaining that this trailer "isn't Star Trek" are fans of TNG, not TOS. TOS was all about cheesy, balls-out science-ACTION. Sexay green Orion slave girls, space battles, fistfights, and witty banter. It wasn't until TNG that Star Trek turned into a plodding, technobabble-laced snore with all the excitement of a physics department faculty meeting.

Of course it is only a trailer, and could be ass. I hope not. Bana looks fucking awesome, still not convinced about Pine, but I will go in with an open mind. And all of you so called Trekkies (or Trekkers or whatever the fuck you would prefer to be called) better hope the movie is good. You better hope it makes alot of money, or Trek is dead. Not comming back in 10 years with a reenvisionment (is that even a word?) of the franchise, but dead and gone. The continuity, whether we liked it or not, is something that was holding Trek back. You can't do this, and this doesn't happen until this time, etc., etc. This is going to be hell of a summer. Watchmen (which I haven't gotten to see yet...and it is killing me), Terminator Salvation, Wolverine, TF2, and Star Trek. Should be a fun summer for geeks.

    I admit..Good trailer. But remember...Orci/Kurtzman

    by conspiracy

Temper your enthusiasm. The men responsible for writing episodes of Xena and for bringing you Pissing, jive talking robots with Urban mannerisms wrote this thing. Sure this trailer is action packed, sure it has some "Cool" scenes....but so did complete shit like Phantom Menace and Transformers...trailers are made to put butts in seats..the best snips from the best scenes...this proves nothing.</p><p> I do not trust Orci and Kurtzman to write a play for a 5th grade class...they have ALOT to prove when it comes to writing intelligent, adult scripts...this gets no pass from me...I still say it will probably suck. But I dare you Bob...Prove me wrong. Prove to me, an educated, adult cinema fan, that you can write a script that does not insult me like damned near everything you have touched in the past and I'll say I'm sorry and spend $12 bucks. Do it..I dare you to prove you are more than a lucky mediocrity.

<p>. . .from watching that trailer. I've never been a die-hard Trek fan--I never saw TOS, saw bits of TNG (which I loved), and saw most of DS9 (which I really loved). And yes, although the trailer makes everything looks like a Michael Bay sci-fi flick with explodinating FX all over the place. . .I can't help but get excited over the possibility of a ST movie done right. Especially after that Nemesis abomination. And Insurrection.</p> <p>And God, the trailer was really, really amazing. I hope this turns out well. *crosses fingers*</p>

    Star Trek V - A Shatnerian Masterpiece…

    by mr sulu

If you look at The Final Frontier as a strange dream of Kirks…from the first campsite scene post mountain fall to right at the end of the film with the ‘Row Row Row your boat’ reprise..then its possible that Trek V is actually a masterpiece of modern day cinema Consider: - The events of the movie are a reflection of Kirk’s fears: being put back into action while he’s unprepared, geting screwed by Starfleet, losing his crew and losing, above all, his friends. - Events from the camping trip are mirrored in the dream: climbing El Capitan/climbing the mountain at the end…the fall from El Capitan/the fall from the turbo shaft…musing around the campfire/musing around the steering wheel. - The broken and unreliable Enterprise is another fear of Kirk; that no ship can live up to the original. - The movie follows dream logic: characters appear when needed (Spock in the turboshaft, Scotty in the brig, Spock in the BoP) and reality warps to accomodate the “story” (70+ decks, the mysterious wheel room, unicorns, sybok, god). - Kirk ate gods for breakfast, so it’s no surprise they show up in his dreams. The fight against “god” is Kirk’s subconscious idea of a generic adventure. Likewise, a Klingon is his idea of a generic villain. - In the end, Spocks saves his ass, just like he saved Spock’s. - The romantic relationship between Scotty and Uhura. - A 30 year plus impossible journey to the centre of the galaxy that happens in a few hours. - Spock having a brother which was never mentioned before. - the song “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” ends with the line “life is but a dream.” - when going through the great barrier and the 3 are in the mysterious wheel room Bones asks ‘are we dreaming?’ and Kirk goes ‘if we are..then life is a dream’… - Being chased by ‘Rock men’ would also have had a very nightmare like quality to it (although those scenes were dropped) - Kirk, Spock and Bones remain together for much of the movie..just like at the campsite.. - And of course the story starting and ending in the same spot, with the Kirk, Spock and McCoy wearing the same clothes. When you look at the movie as a nightmare, a reflection of Kirk’s subconscious fears and desires, it actually, somehow, makes *more* sense. In fact, it starts making a *lot* of sense

    Looks pretty good

    by BizarroJerry

I'm a big fan of pretty much all of Trek. I think this movie's going to do well, too. I think we should maybe look at this like an adaptation of the concept of the TV and movie series. I don't mind some time travel. It's overdone in Trek, sure, but it's always been a part of it. And I like the idea that it's allowing for a new variation on the original, while still allowing the original to exist. The Crisis on Infinite Earths comment is a good comparison, I think.<p>For the people asking where McCoy's accent, you should really go back to the original series. Some people act like Bones had some pronounced, obvious Southern drawl. By the time he got very old in the movies, it was more pronounced, but he doesn't sound all that Southern back in the day. He had a subtle accent. And two lines from Urban aren't a good indication, anyway.

    Plot prophets...

    by BizarroJerry

I'm a bit annoyed by people assuming they know the whole plotline. Just because Cadet Kirk takes over the ship during this crisis, there's nothing telling us he'll be full-fledged Captain by the film's end. Maybe he's gotta go back to the academy first.<p>By the way, seeing Spock sort of lecturing to the cadets while seemingly in a cadet uniform himself could indicate that he's an upperclassman as compared to Kirk. I believe in military academies, upperclassman do get some extra responsibilities. This actually falls in line with the established continuity that Spock graduated before Kirk.<p>And finally... people seem to be getting the wrong idea about what's "canon". The only real canon should be based on what we've learned on the TV shows and in the movies. Encyclopedias and Chronologies and novels put out by official sources do not necessarily dictate anything. The Chronology book that lays down lots of history admittedly refers to some things as "Conjecture", and I believe later editions changed things based on the show or movies. So, don't complain if this movie doesn't match with that. Can anyone point out a filmed scene that discusses what year different characters graduated from the academy??

  • March 6, 2009, 10:44 a.m. CST

Now THAT'S the Trek trailer I've been waitin' for!

GENERATIONS could have been as great as this...

    by mr sulu

Shame they didn’t save Yesterdays Enterprise for TNGs first film and had the NCC 1701-A coming through the rift instead of the C…allowing for both crews and ships to be on screen…(the Ent A coming through the rift into the 24th Century on its way back to space dock after the events of Trek VI - and finding the Federation at war with the very race they had just established peace with in the previous film - therefore both crews have to work together to restore the timeline.) <p> they could have read the script for Yesterdays Ent in 89/90 and though ‘whoa this would make a great cross over film when we get around to doing it with the original cast - we better keep it on hold for that.’ <p> Alternatively they could have just done what TMP did and used elements of the episode for the film - not doing it verbatim but similar (e.g. TMP - with Doomsday Machine/The Changeling.....TVH - Tomorrow is Yesterday/Assignment Earth....TFF - The Way to Eden) Or what if Star Trek VI had been part 1 of a two parter leading into TNGs 1st movie??-Trek VI & Generations could have been a two part story with VI ending with the supposed destruction of 1701-A and the loss of all hands as Enterprise was blasted into the time distortion as Chang fired a huge final volley at her. The Federation President is therefore assassinated and all hell breaks loose leading to war with the klingons. Last scene of Trek VI could have been Kirk seeing the Ent D on the viewer….’to be continued….’ .....Then Generations opens with Picard and Co encountering Kirk and Co and the badly damaged Enterprise A in the war-torn alternate time line of the 24th century.... they could have released it in 1996 (maybe not the Trek VI tie in as 5 years would be too long a wait)thus allowing abit of time in order to come up with a decent script, build some anticipation for TNG on the big screen and also have given the TNG actors and writers etc a bit of a rest after 7 years to recharge..not thrown them into doing the movie immediately after the last ep. Plus 96 was Treks 30th anniversary - the perfect time for a crossover film. Also they could have got Meyer or Nimoy to direct the film (both had directed time travel movies)...Nimoy was offered the existing Generations but turned it down due to the script and lack of time.<p> It could have been an epic 2½ hour crossover movie - Star Trek VII/TNG The Motion Picture Instead we got the nexus with Kirk and Picard making breakfast : (

It's is a custom piece written for the trailer by a composer named Nick Phoenix and his company is called Two Steps From Hell. It is not a piece of music readily available to the public. Maybe one day soon, if enough people keep begging for trailer music, the studios will do what Grey's Anatomy does and provide links to the music to download online.

  • March 6, 2009, 11 a.m. CST

    IN FACT.....

    by mr sulu

If they couldnt do that Yesterdays Ent story for Trek VII (understandable as it would be difficult to get away from the fact it had already been done in the 3rd season and I guess they couldn’t ‘save’ it for the movie as YE was integral in the success of TNG as a tv show) then why did it have to be a crossover movie anyway? The whole passing the torch thing had been done at the 25th anniversary with Star Trek VI (how peace with the klingons emerged...Worf...Kirks final log entry) & even had nimoy passing the baton in Unification 1/2...They didnt really NEED to do a crossover film...just a full on TNG movie cause TNG was popular in its own right...Anyway the minute they realised they wouldnt be able to get the 2 enterprises on screen with the 2 complete crews the crossover film should have been scrapped. (one of the writers of Generations even said that as soon as the crossover film was suggested the image that came into his head was a movie poster with the 2 enterprises and Kirk, Spock plus Picard and Data)

let me get it right? a romulan traveled from the TNG era,to the time when federation was starting,in order to destroy it because he wants to get revenge for the destruction of the romulan empire and the death of his wife, because of a supernova? <p>what can i say, veeery original.. are we going to see picard and the resurrected data (his mind imprinted in B4s body) in the movie too? <p>ofc the timeline, the universe and whatever we have seen all these years, will account as nothing or they will get altered.because of this reboot/retcon. <p>and i thought that fucking up a universe with reboots/retcons,was a privilege for Marvel/DC.but again who said paramount is better than this?

    by The Reluctant Austinite

Looks amazing. Exciting. I do think this could cross over into the mainstream and become a huge summer blockbuster. Will that make old school Trek fans happy? No. While they should rejoice in the fact that Trek will finally have a major crossover hit, I think they like Trek to be their own little club. They don't want people who paid to see "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" to suddenly jump on their bandwagon. I was a Star Trek fan in my youth, but lost all interest in it around the time "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager" premiered. This has me excited about Trek again.

    by ReportAbuse

I'm so surprised to watch high quality video on YouTube of all places that it might be coloring my reaction to the content itself. Good stuff: I caught a little bit of "Khan" in Bana's dramatics there; the new-old cast look the parts; the space battles seem to recognize that there's a third dimension in space (a la BSG). Not so good: I miss the old Spock cameo at the end; the music seems to lack momentum, no clear hook like the earlier trailer had and they took out the TOS theme cues at the very end.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head there in regards to the hardcore or oldschool trekkie/ers. They don't want it to become some large scale hit, because, in thier mind, it wouldn't be this exclusive club that only they belong to. Kinda like when some hear a new band, they fall totally in love with the music, until that band becomes popular and other like it, then the band has "sold out". Same music, band, etc., it is just they don't feel special for liking it anymore.

I think that you guys hit the nail on the head! I am not really a Trekkie...although I adore several of the motion pictures and a few of the TV episodes. Yet most of the hardcore Trekkies that I know seem upset that their little Skull and Bones (or, more properly, "Phasers and Vulcan salute") fraternity might become a little larger...and their geekness might become too common. <p>That said: I am now excited about this film. I am still worried about how "mainstream" this film might NOT become...which could jeapordize future films). However, I am very much looking forward to it -- more than any other film this summer. </p> Great trailer! Now, all I am hoping for is that there will be a nice little epilogue scene of Spock jotting down his memoirs in the distant future...and he gets a knock at the door...from an elderly James T. Kirk (meaning that Kirk didn't die in the Nexus...but will receive the death that he foretold in STAR TREK 5). We only need to see Kirk in a let us know that he somehow lived.

You can always tell when over-privileged, middle-upper-class-trust-fund-babies write movies because the lead character is always a working class tough guy who’s secretly highly intelligent or talented but has to be coaxed into his destiny of becoming a member of the elites. This is the common fantasy of wealthy suburban crackers like J.J. Abrams, Matt Damon etc…who rebels against their status because they feel it emasculates them.

Unlike last summer, this summer isn't particularly crowded. Most of the event films were, in fact, holdovers from Christmas. The Hollywood stike put a gap in films that were slated for summer 2009, so there won't be as many big effects driven films to fight for audience attention, and the slumping economy won't hurt either. People need escapism more than ever.

Hate the lens flares? Blame Apple.

    by empyreal0

It's definitely part of the super-glossy Macintosh / iPhone aesthetic that is all the rage these days. It's the new look of the future. I'm not saying it's bad, in fact, I really like the look in the new Enterprise, but I'm almost positive its pedigree lies with Mac. I do hope it's not as overused as it appears to be, because it will get tiresome very quickly. That said... this trailer is AMAZINGLY well done. A large part is due, of course, to the music. BUT, a few elements give me hope that this will be a very good movie - the speech to Kirk, Bana's "fire everything scream", Spock's lecture to the younger cadets... it's all very well acted, and clearly DIRECTED with a purpose. There is some serious momentum in just those little moments. JJ has a vision here, and I am looking forward to seeing it. I used to be pissed about such lapses in canon and science as the Enterprise being built on earth, but this trailer tells me the character drama will more than make up for it. I'm on board. Can't come soon enough.

A probable reason for action over science...

    by empyreal0

A lot has changed technologically speaking since Trek first came on the scene in the 1960's. Think about how much the original series was about futuristic gadgetry. Phasers, communicators, scanners, etc. Part of what was amazing about original Trek was how technology was such an integral part of what characters could do, and they rarely thought anything of it - it was just part of their lives. We now have cell phones smaller than Trek communicators, and the latest science shows that scanners and beam weapons are in the relatively near future. We simply aren't impressed with technology anymore - we are living in a state similar to the original Trek in the sense that amazing almost Trek-like technology is now omnipresent and part of our everyday lives. Even technolgies that still elude us (maybe perpetually) like transporters, warp drive, time travel, cloaking, etc, have been done to the point that they are too familiar to be exciting. So the natural change is to make that technology more exciting in a visceral sense, with explosions and such. Which is actually fine, I think, as long as the story focuses on the characters. That's what makes Dark Knight an amazing movie. That's what makes any story stand the test of time. I am hoping, based on the slim evidence here, that JJ is doing exactly that. It looks it. And it looks fun.

  • March 6, 2009, 2:08 p.m. CST

    by bash

The 1st 2 Star Trek films were the only 2 that mattered in my opinion. With this film JJ Abrams is establishing a new Trek world. What you must understand is that while the characters are familiar the worlds are familiar the cirmustances that place the characters where the end up at have been changed by character X I've read, the countdown books that have been released by IDW which serve as the prologue to the film. And on that I can say that this Star Trek film is going to be the best revenge film since The Wrath of Khan.

  • March 6, 2009, 2:08 p.m. CST

Let me tell you about Star Trek V (you knew this was coming)

    by chrth

There's a great movie in there that got dismantled by Kirk's direction and some piss-poor editing (how many times can you fly past the same level?). Here's what you do the next time you watch it (and admit it, after hearing someone defend it, you're going to rewatch it): don't pay attention to the movie. Let your mind drift a little. Let the ideas in the movie come to you through absorption (or if you're watching underwater, osmosis). Don't listen to the dialogue, just sort of sense the words.<p> Disconnect from the movie, and you'll connect to a deeper meaning and ultimately a great movie that just isn't on screen.<p> And no, I'm not high right now, or any other time I've watched it.

But the truth is that it dropped from a 9.5 "this is great!" on first viewing to a 7 or so after repeat viewings. <p>That's what we're looking at here, methinks. (the trailer IS pretty slick, btw. I dig it.)

"points of comparison", are you refereeing to the superficial (ie, surface) similarities You've pointed out? <P> First, i wasn't actually referring to YOU specifically. In fact, the whole point of my post was the semi-frequent comparisons, yours is just one, I keep seeing here. You're taking it a bit personally, i think. <P> Now, I don't feel I need to examine and discuss your Comparisons individually at all since, and this isn't just my opinion, all of them are surface details that are incapable of giving us any valid notions about the film, and I'll say it again, as-yet-unseen film. <P>What your asking is impossible. "Explain to me how this movie is different than the one i made up in my head". because that's what you're asking. <P> The end result of a film depends on the quality of work done, not that they used CGI instead of models, or cast younger people, or had old series actors in it, flashy costumes or an actor who's a dead ringer.

OK...OK...I realize a lot of you - Trekkies and non-fans alike - are still too excited after being hypnotized by the shiny things in the trailer, man. Or you're still basking in the afterglow of your self abuse while you watched it for the forty-seventh time, but clearly, the "Smartest Filmmaker In Hollywood"® has done it!! He has succeeded where EVERYONE else - including the franchise's creator - has failed!!! He made "Star Trek" kool! I know you've all been hoping for it, and the more faithful practitioners of Roddenberrism have even been praying for it, and now it's going to happen! You can haul your Cheetos-stained, overweight, pimply, super fat asses out of the shadows and proudly - PROUDLY GODDAMN IT!! - see this movie on opening day and get to FUCK THE CHEERLEADER when it's over!! She'll be waiting for you! This movie is seriously that kool!! You all get laid when it's over! This trailer is making the trailer and hype for "The Phantom Menace" look like the work of amateurs with a camcorder! Hallelujah!! It's finally happened...forty years of pure unadulterated shit with a capital SHIT and it took the creative visionary genius behind "Lost" to do it right! And all he had to do was blow some CGI up in the properly aesthetic fashion... I'd write more, but I'm weeping...not for myself, but for humanity, because the majesty of "Star Wars Trek" is here, and it's here to stay! And all of you fucktard naysayers can just...well, I guess you can go read all the real science fiction still available in the books most moviehead douchebags have an extreme aversion to reading.

    Re : Carl's hat

    by Real Deal

By the way before you start I'm 55 and have watched ST from the begining ( since that night in Sept. 1966 ) Can you claim that? I welcome a necessary change in the ST universe. It's been done to death in the same vein for years. Not that I dislike Shatner & CO. They just are either dead or too old to do it anymore. Roddenberry always wanted to be relevant. The only way to do that now after 40 some odd years is a reboot. Looking forward to this film!

will all be rebooted too? As in everything that happened in those shows won't happen now that history in Kirk's universe has been changed? Will we see a new TNG series with a young Picard...... with hair?? Or perhaps a male Captain Janway? Or a Klingon Sisko? The possibilities are endless. We can throw all of those shows away, pretend they never happened, and start a new under Abrams vision. Hell, we can even pretend the Borg never existed (they were too overpowered anyway).

    Trek for trek haters

    by The Cine-eater

It seems from this talkback that the people who hated or were indifferent to old trek like the trailer, so is this Trek for people who don't like the original and a big finger at the fanbase (its not for the fans it for the new generation - pun intended).Personally it looks like its all explotions and people trying to sound cool and appealing to the OC crowd (Kirk says Dude for tribbles sake).Trek should look forward not backwards, if you want to reboot Trek set it in the mirror universe and you don't have to worry about anything cannon.Have all out war between the two universes that would get my attention. This film will do well though as its all shiny and full of Bay-bangs that will appeal to the new crowd and haters of the old ones and the fanbase will watch it out of morbid curiousity.

    The Trailer Music Is...

    by Scorpio

...not from Michael Giacchino or his upcoming score. It's a piece of film library music specifically for music trailers by a company called Two Steps From Hell, it's from their album "Legend" (the track is called Freedom Fighters; they also used their track Down with the Enterprise, which was also used in Children of Dune), and no you can't buy it. But, DAMN, does it work well for this trailer!

Watched some of the TV stuff when I happen to sit in front of the TV but wouldn't go out of my way for it. This new movie just seems epic and I know you don't judge a movie on a trailer but you can see effort went into this. Also, don't have any of the other hang-ups other hardcore fans have so I'm looking forward to it. Space needs to be explored again like in the 80's, when a lot of movies good or bad involved Space. lol you are so right, just keep lucas

    by southafricanguy

the fuck away. Yeah you are also right about the tv quality of the old movies, but I think if you give trek 2,3, and 4 a try you may like them. They form a loose trilogy, and Khan is just a really great villain. Considered to be one of the best. And trek 4 is actually kind of funny, and fairly lightweight fun.

Thanks for telling me what it is about the new trailer

    by southafricanguy

that interests you as a non-fan. Im just really curious how its going to do, can trek be made cool? can it become a huge franchise? And the reacions of non fans is giving me a really good idea of that.

    by southafricanguy

Actually dude, the original trek was created and broadcast in the 1960's.1966 i think to be exact, and since South Africa did not get tv until the late 70s, it was obviously never shown on South African tv. But next gen was. If what you know of trek is next gen, then reakky do give the old movies a go, the chemistry and dynamic between shatner/nimoy/Kelly (kirk/spock/mc coy) is really great, and no matter how good next gen was, just far superior.

  • March 7, 2009, 5:13 a.m. CST

and while the old movies are somewhat underwhelming

    by southafricanguy

and really just glorified tv shows, there is some really good stories and characters there. In fact check out trek 6, its a pretty good murder mystery, and riff on the end of the cold war, fairly intelligent sci-fi.

  • March 7, 2009, 5:14 a.m. CST

    by Grrrr....

... what I meant. Knew it was made in the late 60's but if they would have shown it here it would have been in 80's. Like you said, only got TV here in 1977 (and yes yanks, we even have TV's to this day....). They have the reruns of the first season of Trek on DSTV showing currently but my wife begs me to watch something else, ha ha.

    by 'Cholera's Ghost

Star Trek has been given more than its fair share of the big budget treatment for 50 years now. There are plenty of speculative fiction books that desperately deserve a film adaptation. I'm thinking Alfred Bester or Dan Simmons since their styles seem well suited for the transition. For a second I thought Dune, but there have already been two quite failed attempts to capture that novel's majesty already. Maybe one of Herbert's others--Hellstrom's Hive (updated for modern science a bit of course)...

    Re : 'Cholera's Ghost

    by Real Deal

This is exactly wrong! The only Trek film that had a budget even appraoching this was TMP and that's only because it ran over budget. Also the FX guy didn't work out so they had to start over which doubled the budget. Most treks have been in the 35 million dollar range. This is 150 million! JJ Abrams has already stated he's trying to bring a first class treatment to Trek for the first time. We've finally got a director/producer who wants to do it up right! Also on a seperate note one of the things I've always had a problem with is that the most recent Berman Trek outings have had slow, plodding music. I actually felt it slowed the action down. Now TWOK had great music for the most part. TMP for some part of it had a great Jerry Goldsmith score. Now the music I heard on the trailer I thought was spot on! The music I've heard on the official website for the movie is of the slow, plodding variety. I'm hoping the action sequences have something more like the trailer. If not it's a missed opportunity and a shame that the trailer had better more inspiring music to get your blood pumping.

An Interesting Thing About This Trailer

    by Real Deal

is that the Youtube version is slightly different than the Quicktime version. One version has that shot where McCoy says " We've got no captin of first officer to replace him ". In the quicktime version there's an extra shot of Chekov looking scared and in the quicktime version there's a shot of Spock listening to this exchange. Also in the Youtube version there's a shot of Uhura saying to Kirk " I hope you know what you're doing " And Kirk replies " Yeah. Me too ". It's a toss up as to which is more effective. The Quicktime one is much more pretty but I like the Youtube version slightly better for it's dramitic punch.

I haven't seen a trailer look this good and exciting in a long time. Hope JJ takes the TDK attitude to character survival and is not afraid to bump off the much loved crew characters over the next 2 films, like TDK did with TwoFace - who lasted about 5hours as a villian. Having said that - if this was the last film I'd be happy. It looks stunning. This Star Trek trilogy should be the definitive Star Trek story from beginning to end. Can't wait. I'm there.

    Trailer music FACTS

    by jazzbozo

Wanted to clear up a few things about the trailer music since I'm a fan of its composer: 1. The music is indeed from the company Two Steps from Hell and was composed by Thomas J. Bergersen, who has been a hero of folks in the MIDI orchestration community for over a decade. You can hear demos of his for orchestral sample libraries like Vienna Symphonic Library and East West Quantum Leap Symphony Orchestra (google them). 2. The music was released in early 2008 on their Legend CD of music trailer cues for licensing. 3. The name of the track is "Freedom Fighters". It was remixed for the trailer and the exclusive rights have been obtained by Paramount.

  • March 8, 2009, 3:06 p.m. CST

Fuck yeah - THATS A TRAILER. And the music..

by DiamondJoe quite easy to find, should you be so inclined, by googling "Two Steps to Hell Freedom Fighters". Not that I'm recommending it or anything. Thats one promising trailer - in the space of 2 weeks I've gone from being totally apathetic about this and Terminator to being genuinely excited. There's some real together shit there.

So if they're just creating another universe, they might forget the other TV shows and create separate universes for them too. Instead of Trek-verse it would be Abrams-verse. But then again, what's the point in Nero going back in time if he's just creating a new universe and not changing the one he was born into? Wasn't it Nero's mission to change the past so that Romulus wouldn't be destroyed in the future?

  • March 8, 2009, 5:23 p.m. CST

    Re : J-Dizzle

    by Real Deal

The idea is that if you're the one doing the changing you'd remember the way it used to be. When you travel forward again you'd be on that new timeline and not the old one because of causality ala Back To The Future. Both actually exist at the same time with different outcomes. Recent theories suggest that every possibility that can happen does happen in one of multiple universes that exists at the same time. So in essence by changing things Nero takes a different road. One that for him hopefully saves Romulus. So even though he's in a different timeline the effect would be the same. New set of circumstances with new outcomes. For Nero if you could be exact enough about it you wouldn't see any difference. The universe would be much the same except Romulus would still exist. However these things are never that exact in Science Fiction so you get difference you didn't plan on.
