Saturday Morning WATCHMEN!?!?!

Published at:  Mar 05, 2009 6:31:20 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... The following, I don't believe is part of the Viral campaign - though it may be. Whatever it is - it is the most nightmarishly hilarious critique of bad Saturday Morning adaptations of comic properties that I've seen. What do you guys think? Would you Watch These Watchmen?

The "And give you cancer line" is what's WRONG with this

    by greenstyle92

not a clearly realized enough parody of the old saturday morning cartoons. There would have been no cancer reference. The Rorschach would have been dumbed down to the wise ass, not the wacky animal lover. Comedian would have been the party down one. perhaps a "say no to drugs reference," but no bedtime reference. Parodies are better when they are accurate, this thing is just trying to be cute.

Jimmy_009 is praising it because it works on a "meta" level, in that it could exist in the actual Watchmen universe. I'm pointing out that it can't for several reasons. It would have been clever if it worked in that context but it don't. It's just trying to be cute. but it aint. And the "parody" elements of 80s cartoons are both overdone and not entirely accurate/coherent. just more family guy level bullshit.

I'll use the old TMNT cartoon as an example. Raphael is a hard ass in the comic but he gets toned down to smart ass. Rorschach would be a smart ass in the cartoon. Like Nightowl would say what to do and Rorschach would say some mildly cynical quip and go along with it. And Comedian would be the Michelangelo-esque "party dude".

Will you get your panties in a knot when Nightowl is the wacky one instead of Rorschach and Comedian finally gets that kiss? Be upset that Bubastis is a cgi talking cat voiced by bill murray? Hate it because Shia Laboeuf was cast as Ozymandias and exclaims "NO NO NO NO NO NO NO" as Comedian fall out the window and right before he catches him? Bubastis as cartoon sidekick plays off a comment in the Veidt memos in the graphic novel, and is obviously a nod to Snarf and dozens of animal sidekicks...Doc Manhattan burning the hydrogen symbol into his forehead...Nite Owl partying down from Michaelangel of TMNT... Rorschach friend to german sheperds... Ozy saving Comedian... Laurie with multiple Docs in bed... smiley face as batsignal... Specter as Jem (or Josie)... Comedian in love with Laurie is just WRONG... Doc turns into car from Turbo Teen... group shot Doc is facing the wrong way... pizza - TMNT again... doomsday clock hits 12... and of course THE SQUID!

    by happy boy

if this sort of thing hadn't been done a 100 times already it might have been funny. you morons typing "genius" are truly lack the humor gene. "ambiguously gay duo" is an example of something "genius." it did something no one had done before (send up saturday morning cartoons), break taboos with the gay stuff and point to the elephant in the room with cartoon characters (the SM/ gay undertones with "dynamic duos"). whereas this: "OMG HAHAHA SO FUNNY!!! CUZ WATCHMEN IS DARK AND THIS IS A KIDS' CARTOON. HAHA I DONT CARE ABOUT ORIGINALITY OR ACTUAL HUMOR IN THE PIECE.... HAHAH I RECOGNIZE THE CHARACTERS IN WATCHMEN AS THE SAME CHARACTERS IN MY COMIC BUT IN A NEW FORM!!!" morons

That "Rambo" cartoon from the '80s. So you'll make a cartoon aimed at young boys based off of one of the most grim film franchises ever. Of course, this is all very "Saturday TV Fun House", but that Rambo one was legit. -sigh- Actually, this makes "Watchmen Babies" seem like a good idea.

Shell out for the ABSOLUT WATCHMEN edition. Its about $50 (you can sometimes get a good deal on Amazon) but the color treatment is PERFECT. If you don't want to get an oversized printing for $$$ at the least ask which recent hardcover/paperback has the proper color treatment - some of the recent trades I've seen have awful color "enhancement" that ruins the book's original look.

    by leafar the lost

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

Read the headline and almost thought it was true

    by joesixpack

I mean, they're saying stuff like "Snyder rules out Watchmen sequel"... no shit he rules out a sequel, there is no Watchmen sequel. The headline scared me!

You are getting upset over the inaccuracies of a parody carton. "Rorschach wasn't a friend to animals! Uhhhhhhhhh uhhhhhhhhhhhhh! They wouldn't wouldn't have said 'cancer'." Jesus Christ you fucking putrid scum need to shut your fucking mouths. It was a fucking joke and you are nitpicking it to death. What in the living fuck are your problems?

    Brilliant work!

Love it! Greenstyle, it's not supposed to be a proposal for a real cartoon and it's not supposed to be what a Saturday morning Watchmen cartoon would really be like in the Watchmen world... it's a joke! Irony! Satire! Humour! Life is great when you understand these things and can enjoy them. Fingers crossed you get the hang of them one day, you thick fucking DORK!

    This gets the Watchman

    by hank quinlan

in a way Snyder never will. Totally understood the comic. All the weird twisted references. And nailed the crappy 80's cartoon feel. Perfect.

    Greenstyle made me laugh.

    by slyandthefamilystallone

I don't think this dude is serious. If he was being so nitpicky he wouldn't have misspelled Nite Owl. I'm even more surprised no one else pointed this out. He's out there...waiting...

    Another possibility....

    by cherveny

In the book, they refer to Ozy making a line of Saturday morning cartoons, based on the various vigilantes.

If looked in that context, I'd think something like this cartoon my be exactly the thing Ozy's people would put together, re-writing people's personalities that wouldn't work for kids.

Unlike, I'm afraid, der Movie in question. This guy-whoever made this-was a ThunderKats fiend.
