Have You Heard Of Daft Punk?? They're Scoring The TRON Sequel..
Merrick here...
The UpcomingFilmScores blog is reporting that French duo Daft Punk has been signed to score TR2N (or whatever it'll be called).
Daft Punk is Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. THIS detailed Wiki entry will tell you more about the artists and their music. You may've heard some of their work on Kanye West's "Stronger" not too long ago.
Daft Punk is known to repeatedly conceal their faces, sometimes performing in robotic masks & even hiding their appearance in interviews (where they might be digitally blurred, etc.) Here's a picture of what they really look like:

UpcomingFilmScores says Daft Punk's involvement with TR2N has been confirmed by Disney.
Here's a a sample of their music:
No word on whether Daft Punk will cannibalize any of Wendy Carlos' work from the original film.
Read more details...
HERE!!!
Thanks go out to Daniel & Bob's Bitch Tits for calling this to our attention.

I saw a 'movie' they made once - worst piece of crap I've ever seen.
-
Celine Dion i suppose...oh and Nickelback, WAYYY better than Nickelback
-
I beg you. This numbers as letters garbage needs to end!
-
and the turd was much better than Nickelback.
-
well then, you're in luck, because they aren't making this movie, they're writing the music.
anyone who thinks this isn't an amazing idea obviously hasn't seen their live show. i wasn't really stoked for tron 2 until right now. -
It could be cool.
-
I think this is a cool move. There's probably nothing that the filmmakers could do to shoot this movie to the top of my "most anticipated" list, but this definitely makes the prospect of seeing this movie a bit more interesting.
-
Film music needs an edge, look what air did for films, tangerine dream, danny elfman was in oingo boingo for gods sake. Check out 'da funk' and other daft punk stuff.
-
Are Daft Punk not huge in American like they are in Europe? Their albums Homework and DiscoVery are classics. Trust me - they will nail this soundtrack and it will become a classic.
-
Did the article really need that much hand holding about the existince of Daft punk? Between not living under a rock during the last 10 years and the Michelle Gondry dvd that came out a few years ago, I assume that most people have heard of them.
-
Awesome.
-
I really have no idea who Daft Punk is, but it makes perfect sense to let the TRON music evolve from the heavy syth-laden 80's track to a more electronica style of music that hold a more recent edge.
Honestly, I was not really a tremendous fan of the original Tron soundtrack but it fit with the times.
Just let go of the past a bit and allow for fresh ideas and fresh tones to help a movie fit where it belongs....25 YEARS LATER where the movie takes place.
-
WOW!!! this made my day, this is like the coolest thing ever, Daft Punk will do an amazing job with the score is such a perfect mixture of artist and movie, who tought about this should get a raise or a medal or both...
-
Good to know!
And thousands of sincere and serious tall people I met on ___Tallmingle.com___ are the most amazing people I ever met! they care nothing but real love and chemistry! that's what we are looking for in today's world! :-)
-
If you're from Europe and are between 16 and 30 then you either know who Daft Punk are or have heard their songs. And right now you are probably trying to remember some Daft Punk songs and realising that they are perfect for this movie.
They had a song a few years ago called Around The World, which was basically just them saying that over and over again in computerised voices and it was a big hit.
Their music is...I dunno, I guess you could call it electronic dance, and a lot of their material has a very 80s vibe to it, mixed with the trance culture of this decade.
And for a Tron movie...well trust me it's a match made in heaven. Any Americans here who are unsure what to make of these guys, trust me they are perfect for TR2N -
I didn't realise they were relatively unknown in the states.
-
I think this is a an awesome idea. It's original and fresh. Plus I've been waiting for a new DP album to get drunk to. Should be good.
-
except for the fact that Florian Schneider had to go and leave...
However, Daft Punk seems like an excellent choice as it seems like a nice evolution from Wendy Carlos's minimalist synth work from the original. -
the conspiracy is they actually say
"I"m blue, if I were green I would die"
Ooooh daring -
sorry dont flame me too hard.

Hey Merrick, keep an eye on people like "sallylove"
by shut the fuck up donny
as I don't want ANOTHER web page I love becoming nothing but spam for random dating webpages.
-
Great choice.
-
But I think they will do a good job on this. Be nice if they use some of Wendy Carlos' themes though.
-
Daft Punk always strikes me as extremely tongue-in-cheek.
-
That's because they ARE well known in the states, just apparently not to Merrick. Growing up with MTV (or Muchmusic in Canada) their "Da Funk" music video by Spike Jonze was one of the most played music videos ever.
-
Can't donnie #2 come up with something original from that movie (and don't try to be a carpet pisser or the chinaman who peed on my rug...that is me damnit!)
-
That song was the shit back in the late 90s. Look it up.
-
If you know what I mean.
-
"Harder Better Faster Stronger?" "One More Time?" "Around the World?" "Da Funk?" Maybe I'm just getting old . . . or gay.
-
I can't think of anyone better to score this.
-
END OF LINE
-
Too bad that dipshit with the first post made this seem negative. Daft Punk is one of the most innovative and popular electronica bands out there, and their computer-ey sounding music is perfect for Tron. What a great idea to get them involved in this project!
-
But then again, "Donnie #2" might actually have been here before me. Neither one of us have called each other out on it! Plus, I never see him post unless it's a political talkback.
-
Ah, but who is Donnie#2? I was posting here and there for months before I noticed the other donnie. I think it will have to come down to a duel. Thats the only way.
-
Donnie #2 (#1?) beat me to it!
-
Daft Punk and TRON sounds like a perfect match.
I've got an awesome mash up mix of Around The World cut together with Fatboy Slim's Praise You. Look it up illegal download fans. -
Loser has to wash walts dirty undies
-
THis gives me reason to see TR2N.
-
Who hasn't? Shut-ins? Retards? Idiots?
This will be fantastic. -

Am I seriously the only one who loves their 3rd Album?
by derlanghaarige
It's like everyone hates it, but I can't stop listening to it. Yes, it was mucho experimental, especially compared to the more radio friendly (but still great) 'Discovery', but damn, I love every second of it!
-
Thanks for the heads up re: "sallylove". He/she/it has been shown the door.
-
thumb war?
-
people didnt realize it until 'alive' (or the show in general) made everyone who bitched about it shut the fuck up. sorry for being so passionate about it, but daft punk is my favorite band.. this is fucking exciting to me.
-
maybe . . . Lefty or Righty?
-
Interstella 5555 was great as a musical anime with a Daft Punk soundtrack so I'm really pumped to see this...ever more than I initially was.
-
Is a rockin' animated film that Daft Punk scored which, with the right drugs, is perfect for zoning out.
Glad to see that they are involved with this. -
Though, why'd you show a picture of what they really look like? What difference does it make?
-
pRIME tIME oF YOUR Life
-
Actually, I'm only a righty..
However, we COULD just try to co-exist peacefully..and if another STFU Donny/Donnie shows up, we just tag-team him.
-
And the only one that was right, was "euro". 3/4 wrong. Good job, man.
-
Works for me. I love Daft Punk.
-
Mar 05, 2009 9:42:08 AM CST
I would love to see the soundtrack taken a step further
by shut the fuck up donny
and maybe have them co-release an "inspired by album," where other prominent and underground electronic artists get a chance at doing remixes and new renditions of the new material and Carlos's old works.
-
uh my house
-
So now you are proposing a Donnie threeway...fucking fag...LOL
-
...sigh...
Next time I'll propose a curb-stomp. -
This is fucking retarded. The sad thing is with the majority of Americans is they only find out about a great artist like Daft Punk when someone like Kanye West uses their acapella to make his own shitty track and generate recognition through some other artists talent. Rapping over Daft Punk may seem cool but nothing beats the original. If anyone has been to a Live Daft Punk show, ie their Alive tour to Australia. Everyone who went still agrees that its the BEST electronic act/concert they have EVER witnessed. Its tragic that they aren't doing another world tour til 2010-11. They wont be using their trademark pyramid either but they will have made a new album and it will surely be groundbreaking. Sorry Im an avid Daft fan and had to point this out.
-
I suggest one of you two Donny's steps into the fire and renames themself 'Ashes Of Donny'. It's what Buscemi would have wanted.
-
Raising the bar PRETTY high, aren't we?
-
To the person asking if they weren't popular in America...no they really aren't. I'd say your average American has NOT heard of them...let alone any of their music. The average American music fan listens to the TOP 40 drivel that is forced down their throats. They don't take time to listen to different bands. My favorite band, Dream Theater, has this same problem....MOST people don't know about them and many have told me they must suck since they aren't on top 40 radio stations. I've heard some of Daft Punk's work and think they are decent...not my favorite, but not bad. This could be a good move for Disney
-
I have had the pleasure of playing the same bill as these guys. Not only are they very very talented and friendly. They will bring the computer world to life with there bleeps and whizez. Have a litttle faith kids thing will be just fine.
-
Roll on the new Tron.
-
...yesterday. I sent it to four people. Scorekeeper, Harry and two others who I don't remember. I think one of them was Beaks. I guess the 4th one wasn't Merrick (Damn you, Cat hater!). Maybe it was Capone. I have to check. But at least everybody can see that I broke this news 24 hours and 30 minutes ago at The Zone. (Yes, I'm a little bit bitchy today, but only because there was a screening of The Wolfman and I wasn't there and got no chance to every be in one until the movie hits German theatres.)
-
HOLY SHIT. This movie just keeps getting better and better.
-
just remember...nobody fucks with the Jesus

Did people need an explaination of who Daft Punk are?
by damien chowder
No friggin way!!! Fuck Kanye in the ass with hot iron bars.
It's like saying have you ever drank orange juice before?.. You know juice from a fruit called an orange. -
While I like some Daft Punk stuff ('Musique' is still a class tune) I don't feel they are right for this. Their style is too dancefloor. If they wanted an electronic band they should have gone with Plaid. They did a fucking brilliant job with the soundtracks to Heavens Door and Tekkon Kinkreet and there style lends itself to the Walter/Wendy Carlos stuff.
-
... but Mouse on Mars would have been better.
-

In case this rumor isn't true or Daft Punk will leave...
by derlanghaarige
...the project due to "creative differences" or stuff like that, may I suggest Rolf Maier-Bode?

I agree with DeadPanWalking
-
I'm not a big fan of Daft Punk, I mean, I wouldn't switch the radio off if one of their songs came on, but I wouldn't buy an album either.
BUT.
For the world of Tron they are abso-frickin-lutely perfect. I suspect there are very few contemporary artists who would "get" Tron in quite the way they would. -
and will probably turn in a proper score like Vangelis & Bladerunner rather than a series of club bangers, as I believe the kids call them...
-
. . . 10 year old boys, dude. . .
-
Check out Interstellor 5555: Amazing Anime film made to their album 'Discovery'. This is great news.
-
Daft Punk can do no wrong. I want to see Pedro Winter aka Busy P in a Tron suit. I'd die.
-
Of all the electronic bands to pick they go with friggin' Daft Punk? Are you fuckin' kiddin' me? How about Autechre or Crystal Castles or Boards of Canada or Pansonic or Health or hell, even NIN? My enthusiasm just dropped. Fuck!
-
These guys know their shit, can't wait to hear what madness they're going to concoct for Tron2, inspired choice.
-
They have sold out to everyone in the last few years, from The Sopranos to Cold Case. There should be some radio playing only solutions somewhere in this movie.
-
Because Nickelback is better than Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Miles Davis, Tchaikovsky, and Les Paul combined. Nickelback is now an adjective and is the highest form of compliment.
-
Fuck you Merrick! You've forever tarnished my opinion of them!
-
I dunno about that. Personally I'm no great Daft Punk fan, I just think they're OK. Bands like Plaid and indeed the mighty Orbital interest me far more. However, Daft Punk do have a remarkably 1980's vibe that might prove to be just right for this 80s turned contempory movie.
Either that or get Paul Hartnoll to score now that he's doing movies... -
you should have put a youtube video of "harder better faster stronger" is quite a big internet meme
-
However...outside a smoky, sweaty, booze and narcotics fueled European Disco..or a hyperspeed drive in your car on an LA freeway at 3am...you can't really listen to this stuff for enjoyment..because is really isn't "Music" in the tradiational sense. I've always viewed house/electronica..whatever you wanna call it as nothing but a soundtrack/background noise for dancing, driving or having sex.
-
Why would today's audience give a fuck about this? I grew up watching Tron and I don't give a fuck about this.
-
the soundtrack then maybe Kraftwork would have been a good choice. but the main man for Tr2n should have been The Aphex twin, Richard James.
Daft Punk is merely an update of the eurofag/eurodisco sound.
In the words of the immortal Obi Wan :" I have a bad feeling about this..." -
Check it out!
http://tinyurl.com/2npuhoIt aint exactly porn, but it definitely brings a smile to many a geek face! -
Oops, got them mixed up with the Deftones :D Disaster averted.
-
but they'll do.
-
I can see their more ambient-style stuff fitting in quite nicely with the material.I hear the put on incredible shows during their most recent tour. Quite the sensory experience.
-
Daft Punk is a very good choice.
-
Did you hear that Faith No More is reuniting to Nickleback it up. They'll be Nicklebacking they're way through Europe this summer to the Nickleback of FNM fans the world over. I'm excited but its a bit subdued because last night I accidentally Nicklebacked inside my underage girl friend, and if her Aunt Carrot Top doesn't visit this month, my life will be totally devoid of any and all Nickleback. Wish me luck, and keep it Nickleback, everybody.
-
Man, this is some COOL news!!! And, really, there are some fellow American's that really don't know who they are? They've been around for quite a long time.
-
...might give a fuck about this because (depending on the story) the subject matter of TRON is more a part of our daily lives than it ever was before. You gotta love man's increasingly complex relationship with technology. Just a thought.
-
Daft Punk's whole sound and aesthetic is absolutely PERFECT for Tron. This will be awesome and has seriously upped my excitement levels for this film. Check out this video from a live performance in 2007:
http://tiny.cc/y6ge3
awesome -
...that came up with this one?
-
I love Daft Punk. Homework is one of my all time favourite albums.
I think their unique sound will fit perfectly with the movie. Good call. -
The early work of Daft Punk is already old fashioned. Wendy Carlos score for TRON still hold up today. I do hope they will reconsider and hire her to score TRON 2.

There's not enough donkey dick in the world to fully illustrate
by thedarklinglord
Seriously.
-
I had the chance to see them live once and it was mind-blowing...I can't think of anyone better suited to score Tron 2
-
this will be a god damn electric masterpiece. Anyone who hasn't heard of daft punk, don't worry, they are legends and will lift this movie way beyond what it would have been with any other score.
-
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES. Did I mention YES??
-
But keep the 2 in the logo. I love that. Also, Daft Punk is the PERFECT choice for this. Looks like Disney is treating this entire project with the respect it deserves.
-
the hell it's called, but having Daft Punk do the score is a WIN anyway you look at it. i'll actually give the film a look now.
-
Who scored that? Thought that was pretty cool.
-
Disco and trance had a retarded NASCAR fanbaby. Granted, the original Tron came out not long after disco died... I just cant picture an intense battle with two or more digital warriors listening to something the teletubbies would have on their ipods.
-
Usually the one with annoying Mc Chrisesque vocals like "Technologic," but overall as instrumentalists/programmers, they should make a great contribution to the soundtrack. Now if we can get Journey to reprise the Tron theme song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U48w_8w_Ceg Speaking of which, anybody played the Journey stand-up arcade game recently?
-
just kidding.
-
Daft Punk rock. I hope it turns out to be a completely insane movie.
-
The producers could have easily gone with a standard, boring choice that we've already heard a thousand times before, like Graeme Revell or somebody like that. I can totally imagine Daft Punk turning in something really different. I can also imagine them turning in a turd sandwich, but if that happens the producers can always leave it on the cutting room floor and quickly hire someone else for a do-over.
-
I'm a fan on Wendy Carlos' music and scores but I figured she wouldn't be doing this one again but after hearing DAFT PUNK will be creating the music, I am even more excited about this film! Bravo!
-
And yes, I live under a rock with one 8-track of Eagles Greatest Hits and I like it that way.
-
The original Tron had a score???
-
is he back?
Strange, I watched Tron yesterday and listened to Daft Punk too..!! -
I'm glad they didn't go with Linkon Park or Mute Math
-
Should've used that vid. One More Time wasn't a bad song either. Their sound fits the tone of this franchise perfectly, so I don't see it as a terrible choice. Plus I like it when they get artists to score films.
-
by disney or daft punk? This sounds like someone snuck into the vivid fantasies of raver kid fanboys. I would be so impossibly happy if this were true.
-
Until I realized upon reading the article it was a GUY! Sorry but I'd never heard of these guys either.
Guess I gotta go inform my wife and kids that I'm gay now. DAMMIT! -
It's not gay if I found him cute when I thought he was a chick? Right?.....right?
I'm so....so confused.
Someone please tell me they thought he was a chick too. -
Introducing Daft Punk in such a manner, with the dick move of just posting their photo, was entirely Daft. To those overseas, yes, holy shit yes, Americans know Daft Punk. They play to giant concerts here just as they do Around The World. What The Fuck, Merrick? (What the fuuuck)
-
Ok, maybe the NASCAR comment was a bit much, but to make this movie intense, they're going to need a hell of alot more than a few looped tracks. I've sampled some of their work, and it's way too similar. I will say that I can see the appeal for those that really dont care for what they re listening to, DP isn't that great. Not enough to score a movie. I get the whole tronic techno connection, but the scenes will lose whatever edge they had with that type of music playing in the background. They need to get someone with more 'street cred' to make this work.
-
I love Daft Punk, but I can't see them doing this. So instead of a March 2009 album AND a new Wendy Carlos soundtrack (a first in so many years), we're stuck with this horrible decision and NO Daft Punk album for 2009 and NO Wendy Carlos soundtrack. THIS. SUCKS.
-
I think they're classified as Progressive House. I've heard quite a few of their mixes from Radio One's Essential Mix and Essential Selection. Good stuff. Plus if you haven't heard Pne More Time or Around the World then you have been living under a rock for the last decade. It will be interesting to see which direction they take with Tron. Honestly I think a collaboration with Wendy Carlos would be awesome but I have faith they can bring something new and great to the table.
-
Hopefully this score to Tr2n won't be as grating and unsettling. Not that that's a bad thing, it worked great for Irreversible, but Tron is a completely different kinda of movie.
-
Why don't they see the obvious?
-
several months of therapy destroyed. i've gotta make an appointment now.
-
Seriously these guys are amazing and they have even stated that Tron was an influence on them...shit just look at the cover work on one of their albums 'Alive' and tell me that isn't Tron. You should check out their live stuff on youtube and tell me you don't get a Tron vibe from the lighted pyramid set up. Anyway they have gone from being the coolest underground music makers (for the cool hip trendy and creative croud early 90's) to being universally liked. You should check out the Michell Gondry and Sipke Jonez video's that they made for Daft Punk and Interstellar 555 (they got a very good japanese anime team to make the movie for them...they are proper geeks. I'm sorry but Plaid, Autechre and the others wouldn't be able to do this justice they are to poncy and up their own arse's and just make crap most of the time that some people think is great music but it sounds like a 4 year old who doesnt have any rhythm...Daft Punk are the best around.
-
Jeff Bridges said it best. They suck a bag of dicks.
-

Will the whole soundtrack be a loop of a single sentence?
by ricarleite
Like 'robot rock' or 'television rules the nation'?
-
Air did Virgin Suicides, Daft Punk doing TR2N. What are the odds of Orbital getting a call sometime in the future?
-
There are very few artists who have the creativity to back up thier songs with great videos and daft punk have that creative talent. Around the world and One more time are two of the finest videos of the 1990s.
-
Wow. I'm lovin' it.
-
I can't believe the reaction this news is generally getting. It makes me embarrassed to lurk and occasionally post on this site. If you poeple would occasionally step away from the computer and out into the club/party and try to get your dicks wet you would know who daft punk are and how inspired of a decision this was by the studio.
-
I love daft punk. but weapon of choice is the best video. Christooher Walken tap dancing. cant go wrong with that.
-
And their involvement piques 1000% for this project. Not only because I like them, but it speaks for a certain amount of control the filmmakers have with this project. If it was up to the studio, it would be all neu-metal.
-
Orbital finished working together 3-4 years ago didn't they...i'm sure I was at their last performance at Galstonbury...or was I so out of it that i may have hallucinated that?
-
Seriously, who the hell doesn't know who Daft Punk are? One of the most commercially and critically successful electronic groups of the last 15 years and yet you felt the need to do an A&E biography on them. Oi!
-
you haven't heard of Daft Punk, Merrick, doesn't mean that everyone else in the world hasn't.
-
Nice to see some love for LCD Soundsystem...
-
Autechre would have been a better choice, their music is much more groundbreaking, interesting & futuristic
-
Truer words have never been spoken
-
Very over rated band... i hate to even call it techno or electronica, since they don't do either very well.
I would rather see someone like Underworld or BT do the soundtrack.
I like Daft Punk, but they music isn't that great for soundtracks. -
is playing at my house ..my house
-
I'm surprised they didn't get Paul Williams to do it. Or Ricky Martin.
-
...the dark haired one, is kind of cute.
Ok, I'm off to read the talkback now. -
the only act I'd rather have to a tron movie would be plaid.
daft punk should do just fine -
Underworld scored Breaking & Entering and (if I remember right) Sunshine.
-
they are only the most influential electronic music artists in the world, with some of the most popular techno and electronica songs of all time coming from their albums. They are composers, and are highly capable of scoring a movie set entirely in a computer-based world. In fact, it only makes sense that it would be Daft Punk doing Tron2.
-
Which was by the way the worst piece of shit that he has ever made. And I'm not just talking about the movie.
-
I've always though LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge" was the theme song about my life. So they (just one guy doesn't count as a they, I know. But still...) will always have a special place in my heart
-
I think most people who are against Daft Punk still think that electronic music is just 'Boom Boom' with a robot voice or samples from 80's pop songs. Of course you don't have to like this genre, but some of the comments here make it pretty clear that they got as much knowledge about Daft Punk or electronic music itself like Yoko Knowles has about U2.
-
yes.
-
Orbital have reformed and are playing summer festivals in uk this year . Hope its gonna be Glastonbury!
-
Some Jeff Mills or any of the Underground resistance guys then maybe we can say they have someone better than Daft Punk to score this film..have any of you listened to the reworked Score for Metropilis that Jeff Mills did..Nuff said
-
I can understand if the only exposure to techno is the endless loop of Darude's "Sandstorm" you hear at NHL NBA and NFL sporting events. I would hate techno too. But Daft Punk are the Michael Jackson of Electronica. The Beethoven of Techno. In fact, the part I can't believe about this deal is that they are ACTUALLY doing this. Either it was a stupid amount of money for them to pass up, or they were asked and jumped at it, KNOWING they could do this. They are artists and composers, and perfect for this.
-
Yeah I hope they play as I think I have seen them their about 4 times and they where always brilliant
-
but, unless FM radio plays their music, I don't think I've heard them.
Nickelback isn't bad, why do they get so much "hate"? Serious question, no smartass answers please. -
equals 90s dance music. I'm admittedly ignorant of the subtleties of the genre, but the articles sample sounds like electronica music from my 90s club days. That's OK, I LOVED that stuff then and will like it hence.
As for Tron being an influence on them, what electronics Nerd wasn't influenced by Tron? -
Nickelback is.....I'll let someone else do it. It's too painful.
-
FM kinda plays their music. They are heavily sampled. The Kanye West song 'Stronger' was a heavy sampling of the daft punk song 'Harder Faster Better Stronger'. Their song 'One More Time (Celebrate)' was a worldwide hit. Even people living in huts in africa have heard it. Go on youtube and look up some of their video's.
Because nickleback has that sound that almost every other band from the early part of the decade had.
3 doors down, puddle of mudd, seven mary three... it's just angsty hard rock. Nothing special about it.
-
They owned that place in 94. The Chemical Brothers try each year but fail to match them.
-
ChemBros are always a let down live. For me at least.
-
Yeah that was a good un!!
-
... I'm so happy with this news! ...I can't wait to see how awesome this could be.
Weird most people in the US dont know them.
Thanks for posting the news harry! -
an inspired choice. Maybe original thought isn't as rare as I feared.
-
Perfect visual-audio match for the sequel. Next order of business, somebody needs to get the Neuromancer film going and have Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) compose the score.
-
Daft Punk could score it.
-
At the time I heard 'One More Time', I didn't know it was Daft Punk.
About Nickelback, there have always been bands with the same or similar sound.
If that's the general reason for the dislike, that it sounds similar to other bands, then I think the dislike is unjustified. -
...doesn't know what he is talking about.
-
Tangerine Dream.
But DP's not a bad choice. Their score for Interstella was solid. -
unless you are like me and that sound is like nails scratching on a chalkboard. Sorry, but creed+nickelback+3doorsdown+puddleofmudd+saliva and all those other bands just sound terrible to me. The dislike is their angsty vocals and generic riffs. Nothing original about them or any band that sounds like them. The whole late 90's-early 00's modern rock scene was as bad as it was in the early 80's.

Always prefered Orbital to them and even Underworld (with Darren Emerson) blow them away live. The Chemicals these days are about the visuals but Hawkwind beat them to that 30 years earlier.Anyone who worships at the feet of Floyds laser shows would've been in awe at Hawkwind when in full flow back in the day. Even if you didn't take acid then you would believe you've dropped something because of what you're seeing. They never get the respect for their live shows.
-
TRON MORE TIME!!!!!!!
-
There is no good reason, unless she's retired and we don't know it, for Wendy Carlos not to be scoring this film. At the very least, she should have a collaborative role.
-
anyone who was curious about daft punk, this is an entertaining introduction. http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=S6nlZLMBAVc
(or youtube search: daft body harder) -
Orbital confirmed NOT to be playing Glasto, but every other craptastic festival instead. It is a travesty...
Oh, and Funnyhat I think you'll find that Orbital are 'the Beethoven of Techno' not Daft Punk. I think they still hold the title of being the only dance act to play Royal Albert hall. -
Orbital only collaborated on a few songs, but didn't do the actual score themselves. At least Underworld has a few credits to their name.. they did do Sunshine, which i think is a really good movie, but im partial to Danny Boyle though, i think he is under rated as a director, even though Slumdog got trendy this year at the Oscars. I can really imagine a driving song like Born Slippy powering a light cycle scene more than Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger.. plus that numbnuts Kanye stole that whole song and tainted it.
Id like to see something more textural in a soundtrack than what daft punk could do. I was trying to think how Cevin Key from Skinny Puppy would do it, since he has some great soundscapes in his catalog. -
You got me there. They are the mozart of techno. Orbital quite honestly blows my mind, and i was caught up in the daft punk furor.
-
Around the world around the world. Around the world around the world.Around the world around the world. How can anyone like this crap? Pass
-
and that's all there is to be said about that.
-
Daft Punk are a good fit for the Tron sequel. I'm guessing that they're bigger in Europe than they are in the US as I'd hardly call them an obscure band. Animation fans may want to check out their Interstella 5555 project.
-
That picture is like from 1982.
-
For a second I was like, I'd fuck her. Then I was like, I think that's a chick. Then I was like, oh shit.
-
...they have good taste in directors, the video for Around the World was directed by Michel Gondry :-)
-
are bloated commercial crap merchants. they make nothing but bland crap. Thier song for spiderman was wretched. I loved aeromiths cover of the spiderman song. but you had to wait for the end of the movie to get that.
-
Can't believe no one's said that yet.
Or maybe they did, and I missed it... -
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
Trash it, change it, mail, upgrade it,
Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it,
Snap it, work it, quick erase it,
Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,
Load it, check it, quick rewrite it,
Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it,
Drag it, drop it, zip, unzip it,
Lock it, fill it, call it, find it,
View it, code it, jam, unlock it,
Surf it, scroll it, pose it, click it,
Cross it, crack it, switch, update it,
Name it, read it, tune it, print it,
Scan it, send it, fax, rename it,
Touch it, bring it, pay it, watch it,
Turn it, leave it, start, format it. -
...to say the least. Daft Punk are famous in Europe for their electronic music and they know how to be innovative, be it their music or their shows. Good choice to have them score a movie taking place in an electronic/digital world.
-
...that people give a crap about this project. It's been too long since the original (which people remember as being better than it really was - it was interesting and novel but not terrific filmmaking by any means) - and beyond that, did no one watch the teaser trailer that AICN posted? It looked like garbage...I just can't get excited about this project at all.
-
and if daft punk doesnt do this film justice, then i suggest 'Justice' might do this film justice. dig?
-
Just to be clear - I'm not dogging anyone for being excited...I'm just amazed by it is all. I didn't think there was really serious interest in ever seeing a sequel.
-
are we in this alone, or are we in this...together?
-
@soup74 - dig! Good call on Justice, their self-titled album rocks (well rather it doesn't but you catch my drift!).
-
it's no daft punk, but a good time, nonetheless.
-
I saw daft punk at Coachella 2006, And I went to their Alive 2007 tour in Berkeley, New York, and Vegas. I think that makes me their biggest fan. This is the coolest news ever!
-
...seen them live soup74 but then I haven't seen Daft Punk live either! I've seen both Orbital and New Order 'live' and came to the conclusion that they weren't really live bands (although admittedly Edinburgh Festival Theatre was not the best venue for Orbital!).
Add N to (X) and Sheep on Drugs (not on the same bill I hasten to add) were both good electronicia gigs tho.
[I forgot I posted under Rogue Trooper on this forum!] -
I'm not a huge fan, I really liked most of Discovery (and the anime-movie was also great) but that's about it. I hope they give more of an effort than Human After All, which was a lazy effort imo. But anyways, seems like a good fit.
-
Thomas, one half of daft punk already scored a movie, the deeply disturbing and tense "irreversible" his score added a lot top the tension and drama. THIS WILL BE A BIG BENEFIT TO THE MOVIE!
-
yeah daft punk are perfect for this movie.finally a right artistic decision.
-
Your use of Nickelback as a verb and noun is intriguing. Conversion is the process whereby a word in one word class is converted into another word class without any change to the shape of the word. Nickelback.
-
What?
-
Tgose of you unfamiliar with the band should check out their movie Interstella 5555, which is basically a long video made to their Discovery album. The songs are even in the same order as the album. I am now officially stoked for this. Check this out:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5585590460724266855&ei=LEawSYW1CIHo-AGfydmMBA&q=interstella&hl=en -
I think that would be the best use of the talents. Whatever Daft Punk fucks up, Richard James of Aphex Twin could fix.
-
Does anyone remember that meme-ish website that played two of Nickleback's "hits" simultaneously and allowed you to adjust the Left-Right speaker balance so that you could hear how both songs were exactly the same?! It was a textbook example of the hit song formula that just reeked of creative banality and market research surveys.GODDAMN! Their music is truly fucking awful. Heinous!
-
So says a friend who has some insider knowledge. That ain't too bad, I suppose. Guess I can wait that much longer....
-
Moodier. But I can live with Daft Punk if not Wendy Carlos.
-
I was listening to them in the car yesterday. Great idea.
-
Fucken AYE! Daft Punk put on the tour and gig of the decade in 2007. Their music is among the best electronic tunes ever made - sign me the fuck up!
-
Daft Punk are a really fun electronica-pop band and I would love to hear them push themselves on a soundtrack. It would have been interesting to hear M83 as well since their last album was, for all intents and purposes, a soundtrack to a film not yet filmed.
-
So you have to use the word Nickleback as it is? I can't add -ness or -ish, or -y, or -ity, -ed, or -ing? So this is to maintain a coherence and consistency until all confusion is overcome, I take it. This is okay. Today I had a Banana Milk shake and a classic American Cheeseburger from Rally's (read:Checkers), it was totally Nickleback.
-
Play the youtube clip found above, and at the same time, play the clip found here http://tinyurl.com/58cqad. Click on the little speaker icon to turn the sound off on the Tron 2 teaser. Now, try to tell me this isn't an awesome idea. Go 'head, try.
-
From the way the article is written it's as though readers live in a movie bubble world where they know lots about film but nothing about anything else.
Oh and I watched Tron for the first time last night, cool visuals. That's about it. I guess I'd see this movie. -
You weren't hallucinating. Orbital did do their last round of summer festivals in 2004. I caught their last Irish gig at Oxegen. They are reforming for The Big Chill this summer in Herefordshire, England. They're brothers afterall. I bet a big fat cheque would lure them back into the studio.
-
these guys rule. f**k tron
-
DAFT PUNK ALWAYS AMAZES ME
-
i read it was brutal for the dark haired dude in the clubs. drunk guys would approach him and say "oh baby you're incredible. your pouty looks are making me so hot."[p]and he would respond, "are you daft punk!?fuck off!" hence the name. true story....really..
-
testfucking test
-
I saw that Tron II footage, nice visuals, shame about the gushing cheering, still something to look forward to......My favourite Daft Punk tune is Rollin' & Scratchin',build the whole soundtrack round that ;>,all Orbital tunes are good [I'm from the chime white label school] but my favourite album by them is In-Sides,Girl with the sun in her head anyone??????.BTW I thought of this tune when I was Watching Wall-E go about his day = http://tinyurl.com/cro8vs.....Who's with me :>.
-
I hope this all works out very well.
-
Seriously, I think Daft Punk are a great choice. Autechre, Aphex, and Boards of Canada, and some of the other bands suggested here are a little too complex/atonal/polyrhythmic to sit comfortable in the background of a film like this. I think are going to do a bang-up job on this one.
-
I didn't believe it until I saw it, but Daft Punk actually puts on a pretty incredible live show.
P.S. I loved the Neutron Dance joke. -
"I don't know who he is."
(for any Conchords fans out there) -
Couldn't be a more perfect match.
Discovery is the best collection of electronic music ever recorded. -
Personally I like the title.
I pronounce it TROON.
If a TR3N comes out, I'll call it TREEN and so forth.
As to Daft Punk, sure, an electronica band covering a score for a video game works for me. Loved the soundtrack to Hackers and I get the impression we'd be in for a similar treat. Works for me. -
sequel, this should make the soundtrack more interesting.
-
WTF! No, No, Noooooooo!!!
Daft Punk. I love thier stuff but they are samplers. they don't make original music they rework it into a new beat. I don't know how I feel about this because. Well it's like replacing John Williams on Star Wars. Maybe hsi songs will be used but they will be mega mixed and abused into new tracks. No thinking about this, no I do not like it. I like Daft Punk as a band not a composer. Bring the Wendy Back!!!! Please, oh for fucksakes... Goddamnit!!!! Fuck..... -
Daft Punk- The Band... They can't write music, they can't read it, and they can't play it, because all of their damn songs are remixes of other peoples works. Is that art?? (walk hard anyone) Well hey... They know good music. They hunt down and resample some of the most obscure beats and give them life, but what are they gonna do for Tron??? Remix and Salt? Damn I want Wendy back- This is her Star Wars.
-
As many as POSSIBLE. You know I'm right.
-
Nice idea.

Amy Chasing, I totally thought of the Conchords...

"We wanted them to look like Daft Punk..."

I didn't give a shit about Tron 2 (actually I still don't give a shit) until I heard this news. I fucking love Daft Punk. LaserPants can piss off with his "daft" suggestions. Crystal Castles? Seriously? I saw those shits live opening for NIN. Fucking terrible hipster music. The only bad thing about this news is that it confirms Daft Punk's next project will be out in 2011. Too far.
-
Harry, you do know that at this point we only come here for TB's right? I doubt I'm the only person who gets their "news" elsewhere days, weeks even MONTHS before its reported on this site. Sorry to bust your balls all the time man, but you guys really need to step it up.
-
Come on fellas. This site is starting to feel like it should be called "Stuff we read on the internet, and posted for you, in case you don't have an internet connection."
Anyways, I hope they get Wendy Carlos involved at least a little bit. Would seem like a shame if they didn't.
One cool thing about Tron though, is that it has probably got the most unique art direction in film ever, IMHO. Maybe not the best, but definitely unique.
-
I did read this first here, but I'm just sayin'!
-
If I ever met you in real life, I would kick both of you in the balls so hard for being such extreme dumbasses, your future children would be born sterile. And then I would kick them in their balls because their fathers are two of the biggest basement baby shit talking bitches ever to be born in this life. DAFT PUNK are electronic gods. They will rock the hell out of this score!!!
-
No one worth knowing listens to Crystal Castles. They are so over.
-
go watch irreversible, thomas from daft punk wrote the score for it. tron 2 is in very capable hands.
-
I think they can bring the same vibe as the original, yet take it to the next level.
As a side note, they should have taken a look at Amon Tobin. His stuff is pretty far out there, yet catchy. And this music video is proof that his music can marry perfectly with similar visuals.
http://tinyurl.com/2rvl9z -
Daft Punk rules.
-
This will be almost as crazy as the time I dropped acid and accidentally walked into Muppets in Space instead of Titan A.E. and almost lost my goddamn mind with all of the puppets and music and kids laughing n shit.
Nonetheless, I'm willing to risk another accident like that for the sake of DP doing Tron2. This will be interesting... -
But then, so is Tron. I can't wait; the first futuristic period movie; like Speed Racer without the laughs.
-
and notice the Carlos soundtrack was more dissonance than consonance. Daft Punk's stuff is all consonance.
-
Suggest 5 DP tunes that would lead me to believe that they're worth all this hype. Something other than their MySpace music. I am willing to be openminded about this.
-
Electronic dance? What are you, a country bumpkin? It's called House Music. For the country which invented dance music, the good old USA really has no clue. How anyone could not have heard of daft punk is beyond me.
"They don't make original music they rework it into a new beat"
You are kidding right? They use both original instrumentation, and samples, and what they do to the samples is astounding. -
Find an EP's worth of songs that prove DP are good to a guy who obviously doesn't like the genre to begin with. But you can't use the 100+ songs on their MySpace page even though that is pretty much their entire catalog. If you do that, Null Arc is "willing" to be openminded even though he opened this conversation by invoking the oh-so-insightful "retarted NASCAR baby" school of musical criticism. Maybe then he'll be so generous as to bestow upon DP the coveted "street cred" that is obviously the beginning and end of being worthy to score a movie. yeah, that sounds worth the trouble.
-
If you guys are worried don;t be. Just check out the Irreversible Soundtrack on iTunes by Thomas Bangalter (he's one half of daft punk & scored this). Preview the tracks and tell me it's not the most incredible decision!
-
Their next project will not be out in 2011, they're recording a studio album as we speak and touring next year. Also, i think alot of people are expecting One More Time/Around the world style music for the soundtrack to this. Not So. There soundtrack work is far deeper and explorational. Check out my post above (Irreversible Soundtrack) and you can get an idea of what to expect!
-
Yeah, you pretty much took the words right out of my mouth.
-
Daft punk's style of music would suit a new Tron movie perfectly! Didn't realise they were relitivly obscure over the pond though?
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0HSD_i2DvA, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBbasXXtrXw&feature=channel. Hope that helps-All the vids are kinda strange like these really-no a massive fan myself, but can SO see their music in Tron.
-
When was that pic of Daft Punk taken, when they were 16? Oh and messege to DP: Cameo, please.
-
I watched the 'Techologic' video before I headed to work today. I have to say that little evil robot creeps me out. But I have had that tune running through my head all night. So I have gone back and listened to all that I could find, videos and such, I have to admit, I was wrong. They are talented, and creative. I hope this creativity enhances the movie.
-
I'm not a huge Daft Punk fan but I do get it and I think they are pretty perfect for this gig. They could do for this soundtrack what the Dust Brothers did for "Fight Club," which is completely hit it out of the park.
-
Merrick is losing his edge.
