Have You Heard Of Daft Punk?? They're Scoring The TRON Sequel..

Published at:  Mar 05, 2009 9:26:17 AM CST

Merrick here...

The UpcomingFilmScores blog is reporting that French duo Daft Punk has been signed to score TR2N (or whatever it'll be called).

Daft Punk is Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. THIS detailed Wiki entry will tell you more about the artists and their music. You may've heard some of their work on Kanye West's "Stronger" not too long ago.

Daft Punk is known to repeatedly conceal their faces, sometimes performing in robotic masks & even hiding their appearance in interviews (where they might be digitally blurred, etc.) Here's a picture of what they really look like:

UpcomingFilmScores says Daft Punk's involvement with TR2N has been confirmed by Disney.

Here's a a sample of their music:

No word on whether Daft Punk will cannibalize any of Wendy Carlos' work from the original film.

Read more details...

HERE!!!

Thanks go out to Daniel & Bob's Bitch Tits for calling this to our attention.

TRON 25 YEARS LATER.....so let it EVOLVE

    by ledergrant

I really have no idea who Daft Punk is, but it makes perfect sense to let the TRON music evolve from the heavy syth-laden 80's track to a more electronica style of music that hold a more recent edge.

Honestly, I was not really a tremendous fan of the original Tron soundtrack but it fit with the times.

Just let go of the past a bit and allow for fresh ideas and fresh tones to help a movie fit where it belongs....25 YEARS LATER where the movie takes place.

    Daft Punk for TR2N? Genius

    by vadakinx

If you're from Europe and are between 16 and 30 then you either know who Daft Punk are or have heard their songs. And right now you are probably trying to remember some Daft Punk songs and realising that they are perfect for this movie.

They had a song a few years ago called Around The World, which was basically just them saying that over and over again in computerised voices and it was a big hit.

Their music is...I dunno, I guess you could call it electronic dance, and a lot of their material has a very 80s vibe to it, mixed with the trance culture of this decade.

And for a Tron movie...well trust me it's a match made in heaven. Any Americans here who are unsure what to make of these guys, trust me they are perfect for TR2N

This is fucking retarded. The sad thing is with the majority of Americans is they only find out about a great artist like Daft Punk when someone like Kanye West uses their acapella to make his own shitty track and generate recognition through some other artists talent. Rapping over Daft Punk may seem cool but nothing beats the original. If anyone has been to a Live Daft Punk show, ie their Alive tour to Australia. Everyone who went still agrees that its the BEST electronic act/concert they have EVER witnessed. Its tragic that they aren't doing another world tour til 2010-11. They wont be using their trademark pyramid either but they will have made a new album and it will surely be groundbreaking. Sorry Im an avid Daft fan and had to point this out.

    Daft Punk in America

    by yodaismyhomie

To the person asking if they weren't popular in America...no they really aren't. I'd say your average American has NOT heard of them...let alone any of their music. The average American music fan listens to the TOP 40 drivel that is forced down their throats. They don't take time to listen to different bands. My favorite band, Dream Theater, has this same problem....MOST people don't know about them and many have told me they must suck since they aren't on top 40 radio stations. I've heard some of Daft Punk's work and think they are decent...not my favorite, but not bad. This could be a good move for Disney

I dunno about that. Personally I'm no great Daft Punk fan, I just think they're OK. Bands like Plaid and indeed the mighty Orbital interest me far more. However, Daft Punk do have a remarkably 1980's vibe that might prove to be just right for this 80s turned contempory movie.

Either that or get Paul Hartnoll to score now that he's doing movies...

    by conspiracy

However...outside a smoky, sweaty, booze and narcotics fueled European Disco..or a hyperspeed drive in your car on an LA freeway at 3am...you can't really listen to this stuff for enjoyment..because is really isn't "Music" in the tradiational sense. The producers could have easily gone with a standard, boring choice that we've already heard a thousand times before, like Graeme Revell or somebody like that. I can totally imagine Daft Punk turning in something really different. I can also imagine them turning in a turd sandwich, but if that happens the producers can always leave it on the cutting room floor and quickly hire someone else for a do-over.

Ok, maybe the NASCAR comment was a bit much, but to make this movie intense, they're going to need a hell of alot more than a few looped tracks. I've sampled some of their work, and it's way too similar. I will say that I can see the appeal for those that really dont care for what they re listening to, DP isn't that great. Not enough to score a movie. I get the whole tronic techno connection, but the scenes will lose whatever edge they had with that type of music playing in the background. They need to get someone with more 'street cred' to make this work.

I think they're classified as Progressive House. I've heard quite a few of their mixes from Radio One's Essential Mix and Essential Selection. Good stuff. Plus if you haven't heard Pne More Time or Around the World then you have been living under a rock for the last decade. It will be interesting to see which direction they take with Tron. Honestly I think a collaboration with Wendy Carlos would be awesome but I have faith they can bring something new and great to the table.

You should check out their live stuff on youtube and tell me you don't get a Tron vibe from the lighted pyramid set up. Anyway they have gone from being the coolest underground music makers (for the cool hip trendy and creative croud early 90's) to being universally liked. You should check out the Michell Gondry and Sipke Jonez video's that they made for Daft Punk and Interstellar 555 (they got a very good japanese anime team to make the movie for them...they are proper geeks. I'm sorry but Plaid, Autechre and the others wouldn't be able to do this justice they are to poncy and up their own arse's and just make crap most of the time that some people think is great music but it sounds like a 4 year old who doesnt have any rhythm...Daft Punk are the best around.

they are only the most influential electronic music artists in the world, with some of the most popular techno and electronica songs of all time coming from their albums. I can understand if the only exposure to techno is the endless loop of Darude's "Sandstorm" you hear at NHL NBA and NFL sporting events. I would hate techno too. But Daft Punk are the Michael Jackson of Electronica. The Beethoven of Techno. In fact, the part I can't believe about this deal is that they are ACTUALLY doing this. by himbo

equals 90s dance music. I'm admittedly ignorant of the subtleties of the genre, but the articles sample sounds like electronica music from my 90s club days. That's OK, I LOVED that stuff then and will like it hence.
As for Tron being an influence on them, what electronics Nerd wasn't influenced by Tron?

FM kinda plays their music. They are heavily sampled. The Kanye West song 'Stronger' was a heavy sampling of the daft punk song 'Harder Faster Better Stronger'. Their song 'One More Time (Celebrate)' was a worldwide hit. Even people living in huts in africa have heard it. Go on youtube and look up some of their video's.

Because nickleback has that sound that almost every other band from the early part of the decade had.
3 doors down, puddle of mudd, seven mary three... it's just angsty hard rock. Nothing special about it.

unless you are like me and that sound is like nails scratching on a chalkboard. Sorry, but creed+nickelback+3doorsdown+puddleofmudd+saliva and all those other bands just sound terrible to me. The dislike is their angsty vocals and generic riffs. Nothing original about them or any band that sounds like them. The whole late 90's-early 00's modern rock scene was as bad as it was in the early 80's.

Always prefered Orbital to them and even Underworld (with Darren Emerson) blow them away live. The Chemicals these days are about the visuals but Hawkwind beat them to that 30 years earlier.Anyone who worships at the feet of Floyds laser shows would've been in awe at Hawkwind when in full flow back in the day. Even if you didn't take acid then you would believe you've dropped something because of what you're seeing. They never get the respect for their live shows.

Orbital only collaborated on a few songs, but didn't do the actual score themselves. At least Underworld has a few credits to their name.. they did do Sunshine, which i think is a really good movie, but im partial to Danny Boyle though, i think he is under rated as a director, even though Slumdog got trendy this year at the Oscars. I can really imagine a driving song like Born Slippy powering a light cycle scene more than Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger.. plus that numbnuts Kanye stole that whole song and tainted it.

Id like to see something more textural in a soundtrack than what daft punk could do. I was trying to think how Cevin Key from Skinny Puppy would do it, since he has some great soundscapes in his catalog.

So you have to use the word Nickleback as it is? I can't add -ness or -ish, or -y, or -ity, -ed, or -ing? So this is to maintain a coherence and consistency until all confusion is overcome, I take it. This is okay. Today I had a Banana Milk shake and a classic American Cheeseburger from Rally's (read:Checkers), it was totally Nickleback.

    Best news all year!!!

    by thewaqman

I didn't give a shit about Tron 2 (actually I still don't give a shit) until I heard this news. I fucking love Daft Punk. LaserPants can piss off with his "daft" suggestions. Crystal Castles? Seriously? I saw those shits live opening for NIN. Fucking terrible hipster music. The only bad thing about this news is that it confirms Daft Punk's next project will be out in 2011. Too far.

    by the_shogun_gunslinger

Harry, you do know that at this point we only come here for TB's right? I doubt I'm the only person who gets their "news" elsewhere days, weeks even MONTHS before its reported on this site. Sorry to bust your balls all the time man, but you guys really need to step it up.

    Agreed.

    by thewrathofsean

Come on fellas. This site is starting to feel like it should be called "Stuff we read on the internet, and posted for you, in case you don't have an internet connection."
Anyways, I hope they get Wendy Carlos involved at least a little bit. Would seem like a shame if they didn't.

One cool thing about Tron though, is that it has probably got the most unique art direction in film ever, IMHO. Maybe not the best, but definitely unique.

    by nohomo

If I ever met you in real life, I would kick both of you in the balls so hard for being such extreme dumbasses, your future children would be born sterile. And then I would kick them in their balls because their fathers are two of the biggest basement baby shit talking bitches ever to be born in this life. DAFT PUNK are electronic gods. They will rock the hell out of this score!!!

    GOOD CHOICE

    by burgertime

I think they can bring the same vibe as the original, yet take it to the next level.

As a side note, they should have taken a look at Amon Tobin. His stuff is pretty far out there, yet catchy. And this music video is proof that his music can marry perfectly with similar visuals.

    by onemanarmy

This will be almost as crazy as the time I dropped acid and accidentally walked into Muppets in Space instead of Titan A.E. and almost lost my goddamn mind with all of the puppets and music and kids laughing n shit.

Nonetheless, I'm willing to risk another accident like that for the sake of DP doing Tron2. This will be interesting...

    Daftpunk...wow. that's....incredibly passé

But then, so is Tron. I can't wait; the first futuristic period movie; like Speed Racer without the laughs.

    Hopefully they'll study the original

and notice the Carlos soundtrack was more dissonance than consonance. Daft Punk's stuff is all consonance.

Suggest 5 DP tunes that would lead me to believe that they're worth all this hype. Something other than their MySpace music. I am willing to be openminded about this.

Some of the comments on here astound me

    by electric_sheep

Electronic dance? What are you, a country bumpkin? It's called House Music. For the country which invented dance music, the good old USA really has no clue. How anyone could not have heard of daft punk is beyond me.

"They don't make original music they rework it into a new beat"

You are kidding right? They use both original instrumentation, and samples, and what they do to the samples is astounding.

    What an odd challenge

    by wickedjacob

Find an EP's worth of songs that prove DP are good to a guy who obviously doesn't like the genre to begin with. But you can't use the 100+ songs on their MySpace page even though that is pretty much their entire catalog. If you do that, Null Arc is "willing" to be openminded even though he opened this conversation by invoking the oh-so-insightful "retarted NASCAR baby" school of musical criticism. Maybe then he'll be so generous as to bestow upon DP the coveted "street cred" that is obviously the beginning and end of being worthy to score a movie. yeah, that sounds worth the trouble.

    by petedrinksduff

If you guys are worried don;t be. Just check out the Irreversible Soundtrack on iTunes by Thomas Bangalter (he's one half of daft punk & scored this). Preview the tracks and tell me it's not the most incredible decision!

    DAFT PUNKs

    by petedrinksduff

Their next project will not be out in 2011, they're recording a studio album as we speak and touring next year. Also, i think alot of people are expecting One More Time/Around the world style music for the soundtrack to this. Not So. There soundtrack work is far deeper and explorational. Check out my post above (Irreversible Soundtrack) and you can get an idea of what to expect!

    by null arc

I watched the 'Techologic' video before I headed to work today. I have to say that little evil robot creeps me out. But I have had that tune running through my head all night. So I have gone back and listened to all that I could find, videos and such, I have to admit, I was wrong. They are talented, and creative. I hope this creativity enhances the movie.

I'm not a huge Daft Punk fan but I do get it and I think they are pretty perfect for this gig. They could do for this soundtrack what the Dust Brothers did for "Fight Club," which is completely hit it out of the park.
