Surprise STAR TREK Icons To Turn Up In Abrams’ Movie???
SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!
Latino Review covered last weekend's WonderCon panel with IDW Comics (publisher of the terrific “Countdown” prequel/sequel to J.J. Abrams' upcoming “Star Trek” movie
), and it looks like the participation of Jean-Luc Picard, Data and possibly other “Next Generation” icons may not be limited to the funnybooks:
"The end of issue 4 is a cliffhanger and is going to continue in the first few minutes of the movie."
Right after that was said, another writer (or artist) said that part of the movie will take place with the Next Generation crew and to look out for that. Another guy on the panel gave him a quick "uh oh" look and smiled.
After that, someone from the audience asked "So are members of the Next Generation cast in the new Trek movie?" to which the same guy replied, "I really cannot say anything about that."
If true? Best news I’ve heard all week! (Can’t wait to see how well the CGI takes out 60-year-old Brent Spiner’s wrinkles!)
This news reminds me that William Shatner and George Takei were visited by writer-director Abrams just prior to the announcement of Abrams' involvement in the new “Star Trek” movie, which hits U.S. cinemas May 8 (just two months and six days from right now!).
Find all of Latino Review’s story on the matter (plus video of the apparent slip) here.

For the first time! No longer a virgin!

First time for everything.:-)
-
And he's really nervous to meet Nero!
-
I feel bad for you NoHubris. I'm still laughing my ass off, though.
-
Character Lily Sloane from First Contact! "You broke your little ships..."
-
this is good news, bring on Picard.
-
If ST:TNG is in the movie that changes things for the better IMHO, since it is a "time travel" saga.
-
Better luck next time... ;-)
-
If you are going to reinvent something, just do it and don't look back. Trying to shoehorn old characters into this will just be clumsy. Don't give us winks and nods, give us innovation.
-
I just Shatnered!
-
Like an after-the-credits Nick-Fury like appearance.

I'm laughing too, White Goodman. That's what I get for slow login. :-)

And if you don't know about V'ger, you're too young to be on this website, or in a Star Trek talkback in general...

something to tie it together, and NG deserves mention.

Believe it.

did the Next Generation crew come after the original? or concurrently? how does this work?if this is a reboot of the original franchise, how can the next generation appear?

But I handled it like a MAN rather than what W. Goodman said.Anyhow, since you're so civil and cordial, I certainly don't mind being the JONAS BROS to your MADEA GOES TO JAIL (i.e. this weekend's box office race).:-)

Time travel. Next to bad-ass robots, it is to movie and TV what ScriptGirl's big titties are to talkbacks.
That's why DR. WHO is the best show on TV, BTW...he has two different flavors of robot baddies, and time travels like a mother-fucker. -
This does not bode well for the franchise. The bigget draw is the fresh start. Now it may end up having the same lame vibe as ALL OF THE NEXT GENERATION MOVIES!!!
-
since the announcement of Nimoy. This actually has me a little excited.
-
...Like he really wants me to accept that cake with a woman going to the bathroom on it, and he's not taking "no" for an answer this time...
-
No you see, your clothes fell off and, well, it didn't matter then because Mr.Stewart... he saw everything.
-
I hope this is not true. I will lose all excitment for this movie. If he is cramming a bunch of cameos than he should have made room room Shatner. Otherwise leave all TNG actors at home! Please!!!!! Those were the worst!!! They will kill this movie!!
-
I'm guessing he said give me the same screentime as Nimoy and I'll do it.
-
Most of the cast is doing other projects, and I'm sure something would have slipped by now.

"Like he really wants me to accept that cake with a woman going to the bathroom on it". Burnhollywood takes the cake for the most obscure reference I've read in a talkbalk in a long time.

there, that's my inner trekkie expressed for the month.

but we don't see any TNG cast members.

is filling in the gaps for the geeks that the film can't; you want to see Picard and Data involved? Go buy the funny books because they won't be in the movie

Oh dear. Well thats fucked that right in the ear then. Thanks internets.

Are you trying to hint Herc that all the Shatner drama is a smok
by theseeker7
That all this time, he always DID have a cameo in the film?
-
This movie WILL be a hit! Not that it wasn't going to be anyway, but it certainly makes ME more excited to see the film and will DEFINITELY get my Dad excited when I force him to see the movie on the big screen. Although he's an old-school sci-fi fan (i.e. likes Asimov and Heinlein, but wouldn't be caught DEAD at a convention), like most retirees, he mainly gets excited by the Weather Channel and rarely goes to the movies.
-
The Shatner drama was a SMOKESCREEN.
The subject line of the talkbacks should really be setup like where it simply won't allow you to add any more characters if that's the point where the display is gonna end anyway. -
already debunked by TrekMovie.com. Wouldn't worry about getting your panties in a twist about it. I'm sure the story from the comics carries right into the film but I wouldn't count on seeing any TNG characters in there.
-
Bring on Picard, and Data. I fucking love TNG. Can't believe Spiner is 60...jesus christ the time flies.

by wickedjacob
So there!
-
So settle down. Breath. That's better.
-
That would be a bit naff if it's just a shot of the starship and perhaps a voice over from a couple of the characters.
If Abrams really has put Picard & Co into the movie then my interest has suddenly shot back up from zero to maybe seeing this in the cinema. -
I've read the first two issues of "Countdown" and so far, so good.
-
Assuming you are serious, the original series came first, Next Generation was some 75 years afterward. DS9 was somewhat concurrent with the last couple of seasons of Next Generation, and Voyager began its journey as DS9 was winding down. Enterprise is a "prequel" series, taking place 100 years prior to Kirk taking command of his ship. Its biggest failure was that, rather than exploring a robust Trek back story, they toyed and tinkered with the history a bit, and ignored major events such as the first two Fed/Klingon wars. Bacula is perfect as the captain, and the show had many positive points, but the whole concept was not handled properly.
-
so they didn't print enough issues for us. Thank god that some people were happy to share on the torrent networks.
-
I still have serious doubts about this movie. J.J. can't decide if its a reboot or a nostalgic revisiting. The whole concept of changing the canon, and saying they are not, is ridiculous.
-
Outside of Spock, no characters previously seen in the 24th century will be present. This news item is just there to get Next Gen fans into the theater...so, you know, fall for it if you must, but don't go in expecting something that isn't there and complain afterwards. There are enough of us complaining before the movie comes out.
It would be interesting to do a poll to see how many people are actually interested in the movie and see if it changes as it gets closer to May... -
Many different people have said there is more in this movie then just what the previews show. If it is a time travel story and it begins twenty years after Nemisis why not have a few of the Next Gen cast. It would be nice to see Stewart as Picard one last time. Perhaps this will all undo the needless death of Kirk in Generations and that will bring back Shatner as Kirk in the end.
-
improve or as TheGhostWhoLurks claims make this a hit when their own trek movies stink
-
i've been waiting for them undo the death of Kirk since 1994
-
To bring Shatner back at the end would be silly, seeing as how Paramount wants this to be a new franchise of films.
So, this won't erase Kirk's death--and it might not even guarantee more Trek...and even if it does, it will only be with this new cast doing their new thing. -
Beware of poile in this article.
-
Before evil Bana from the future warps back to the past, the Enterprise E with Captain Data, and Admiral Picard trying to stop him, then letting Spock know so he can go back in time as well. What I don't get is how lame-ass B4 can now be identified as Data despite the transfer of all his memory engrams (from the inferior Nemesis)
-
the whole cast (wesley and yar included) will be appearing on family guy at the end of the month.

The most exciting news since admiral Janeway in Nemesis
by bendersshinyass
Look, It didn't work for Next generation. And it did nothing for Nemesis. At least they had the balls to cut it out of Insurrection. Trek is so much more than just nods to the fans and trying to get everyone from the shows in on the big screen action. Next gen should be making TV movies. Ds9 too. Voyager has seen her day. that said, I really hope we get to see Spock hitching a ride with Sulu on the excelsior
-
It's not. It's the NEXT Next NEXT Generation era.
-
...is supposedly an in an alternate timeline created when Tattoed Bruce Banner Romulan destroys Vulcan, I suppose the Next Gen cameo will go like so... The 24th Century. Establishing shot: On the bridge of the NCC-1701-C. Captain Picard: Data, set a course for Farpoint Station. Data Aye-aye Captain. Strange... Captain, sensors have detected an unusual phenomenon headed in out direction. Picard: Explain. Data: It seems to be some sort of chronal distortion wave. It has increased in speed. Now 100 hundred kilometers away, 50 kilometers... Picard Prepare to r.... Crazy light effects, fade to black. ...And no more Next Generation/Deep Space Nine, and Voyager in JJ Abrams' dojo.
-
and it turns out this new movie is all just a dream wesley was having after reading about the exploits of the TOS crew....lol

Cool If True, But I Still Believe Kirk (Shatner) Will Be In It!
by bojtrek
I think it would be cool to see Picard or Data trying to stop Nero before he time travels. If not, no biggie!
But I still believe this is a huge marketing ploy. I think they are trying to hide Shatner's cameo to make the big "holy shit" part of the movie. Deny, deny, deny and a little more denying and all of the sudden... Abrams/Shatner tricked us and it was a great surprise.
Or I could be completely wrong! -
I'm all for the TNG cast in the film. Honestly I always preferred TNG to TOS, but that was my generation of TV. (though I have grown to love TOS on DVD, and am definately going to see the new film.)
But seriously, how many times can we do a Star Trek film about a time distortion, a wrinkle in time, or some sort of ribbon of time. It's been done... far too often in the Trek films. Can't we come up with a better idea for the next one? -
It shows the filmmakers actually care about the hardcore audience.
-
Remember, Data was destroyed in NEMESIS, so unless this is a wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey thing, I call bullshit on Spiner's involvement.
-
No, in the second comic Data says they were able to overlay his neural nets onto B4 or whatever. It would be cool if Picard and Data show up in cameos in the movie, I think.
-
Trekmovie.com is THE source for Trek movie news. Roberto Orci and others regularly give Anthony Pascale over there the inside scoop, and this rumor was debunked days ago. There are NO TNG cameos. Or Shatner, sadly, though they damn well SHOULD have had him in there. The Shat was correct, it IS stupid that he was excluded. We old school fans are getting a bone thrown our way in the form of Nimoy, and that's it. Sad to think about it, but his appearance may well mark the final time any character from the "prime" timeline ever shows up again. It's all new universe from here on out.
-
That couldn't be a bad thing. I mean, it may not help the movie, but I don't think it could hurt it.
-
It's B.S. and isn't happening. TNG era yes, TNG cast, no. So settle down you wishful thinkers. Suits me that its not happening.. it would probably come off as too gimicky.
-
and the fanboy in me is giddy with the thought of having a bit of TNG in the new movie... I think this is a bad idea.
Having Spock is great.. A great way to tie in with the past, but to muddle things up with having TNG cameos takes away from this being a new look at the franchise.
Kirk's involvement with "Generations" was a wasted opportunity. The role, while a cool "passing of the torch" was needless.
JJ should have used this as a way to relaunch his vision, not bog it down with references to the past (or the future, as it were).
That said, I'll still be in line because I'm Star Trek's bitch... (at least I'm honest about it!!) -
Because, it seems that the "modern day" Spock played by Nimoy would be from the TNG or post-TNG era where he was last seen on an episode of the series.
-
As much as I would've loved to have the Shat make an appearance, Braga, Moore & Co. already killed him off.. how do you suppose they would bring him back and make it not seem like a gimmick?
-
it will be Stewart, and not Spinner. Even non-geeks know Patrick Stewart, but only Star Trek geeks, like myself, know who the hell Spinner is. I welcome the cameo, but we will see if it happens. They might have decided they wanted to make a clean break with little baggage from other series, even the good ones.
-
Is anyone really surprised? That over the top exchange of wanting to be in the movie, wanting him in the movie, a misunderstanding, deliberate release of Nimoy in the trailer to trip the fans even more than Shatner is not in the movie! COME ON!!! WE ARE STAR TREK FANS. WE ARE THE LEGIONS OF GEEKDOM!! You still believe there are no other surprises? Come on now! This is from the guy who gave us LOST and FRINGE and ALIAS.
Use your brains or don't get on the talkbacks with the junk -
It is actually a good movie if you can ignore the shoehorning of the older series. Shatner was wasted potential and absolutely unnecessary. Alex from A Clockwork Orange was a pretty sweet villain, though.
-
You can't keep this kind of stuff a secret these days. Some catering guy would've been all over the internet saying he served pizza rolls to Patrick Stewart on the set of the new Trek movie.
-
So says Trek Movie
http://trekmovie.com/2009/03/01/rumor-control-no-tng-cameos-in-new-star-trek-movie/ -
They are ok, I especially appreciate the elderly Spock/Nero backstory, but they have their dodgy elements as well. Spock is the ambassador FROM Vulcan and Picard is the ambassador TO Vulcan? Ok. That doesn't seem contrived. And isn't ambassador to Vulcan a bit of a low key job for a man (Picard) who was the greatest Starfleet hero of his time? He may as well have taken a part-time job sacking at Kroger. He should be running Starfleet by this point, or be President of the UFP. What suddenly made him an expert on Vulcan society? Even ambassador to the Klingon empire would've made more sense, based on what we saw in TNG. Finally, these comics don't take place "decades after Nemesis." A few years at most; in issue #2 Picard hasn't aged a day since we last saw him.
-
Separated at birth by 25-30 years.
-
Guys this was debunked like over a week ago. You guys REALLY need to update this site more.
-
Truth. TNG is the best.
-
Hey Alan_Moore, remember when Sarek was losing his mind and crying at Data's concert. Well, Picard swapped minds with Sarek or took his emotions... they did a mind-meld. So, maybe he is the perfect person for Vulcan society. And I agree he would be running Starfleet or something more important.
-
http://i43.tinypic.com/2elh9q9.jpg
-
Honestly, why not just incorporate Quark in a scene where he turns to the audience and is like, "my career was on the skids, so what can ya do?"
-
Good point recalling the mindmeld with Sarek. Still, Picard interacted with Klingons far more often, got involved in their politics, and was Worf's best friend. It would've been cool to see him as the ambassador to the Klingon empire, but I guess that wasn't convenient to the story they're telling in the comics.
-
Officer Broccoli was always a bitch. I seriously think that having the TNG crew even cameo-ing is going to sell this to a whole mess of people. Hell, I just got off the phone with my mother (like many of you, we all had the Friday nights where the whole fam watched TNG) and her first comments were 'Don't tell me Picard's going to be in this, cause I don't want to see this...but will if they show up.' Weird devotion, eh? Oh and guys--saw Watchmen last night. This movie is NOT for fans of the book. Seriously. Having read Watchmen is going to diminish your enjoyment--you'll more than likely leave feeling kinda meh, just as I did.
-
Copying a days-old rumor from Latino Review that's already been debunked? Yeah, there's journalism. You should be ashamed.
-
Data appears in the movie but only in a 'hey look there's Data!' in a passing reference.
Turns out that he was discovered during the TOS era, and he was held by Star Fleet for a long time for study before he developed a self-awareness (and Star Fleet granted him sentient rights), and then joined Star Fleet as a cadet.
The only other cameo is that there is a young gardener in the background who is not named, but it is supposed to be Boothby, who was credited by Picard as 'the smartest man in the whole academy' and he encouraged young Wesley Crusher to find him and absorb all he can from him. -
Rip a sequence of him that JarJar can paste into the beginning or end of the movie.
We gotta shut those Trekker assholes up. -
...I want Pee Wee Hermann to have a cameo, preferably interacting with James "Mr. Barbara Streisand" Brolin.
-
Stop getting pissed/excited/meh'd. It's established that they are not in the film.
-
motherfucking robuts...
-
Like an evil wizard or somethin'!
-
Strange how Nimoy was not at comic-con when he has such an important role according to the writers. And more strange that Nimoy has only been seen in 1 tiny trailer clip so far. Could it be that Nimoy hates the finished movie as it pees on his Trek era from a great height or could it be that Nimoy has such a small role (his poster credit is almost last) that they cannot show him until the movie is out. The mediocre director of MI3 is no Nick Meyer who can regenerate the franchise is he??
-
Since the die hard Trekkies are being forced to accept a new version of all things "Star Trek" (whether they want it or not) and Leonard Spock is making a cameo in the film (and thereby mooning any remaining fans of the original series with his wrinkled old arse hole), it seems to me that they ought to cram as many other Trek characters from every series as possible into the film, including the corpse of DeForest Kelly. I mean, it can't actually hurt the box office, right? This IS the "Star Trek" film that is supposed to finally get all the geeks out there laid, right? 'Cause, you know, this ain't your daddy's Trek, which means a bunch of stupid hawt cheerleaders will be there on May 8th waiting for ya, dood! So I say...RESHOOTS DAMMIT! Go do reshoots with more past Trek actor cameos! I want to see Chief O'Brien pop his head up out of the brig's retractable wall toilet!!!
-
They made a huge investment in this stinker - they have to be making in their pants now. This will be the big bomb of 2009.
-
You better hope this doesn't bomb, because if it does, Trek is dead. For good. And it can't live off just the Trekkies anymore. Way too few to support feature films. I hope this is good, so that we can have more good Trek, but guess what, if it bombs, let it die. No Trek > Bad Trek

-
if this show fails to exceed expectations. But it might become a reality show set aboard the real USS Enterprise -- gotta happen -- years from now.
-
Potentially worse than the ESPN : Favre sycophantic relationship?
-
Not true because if Data was from ToS time than his creator would have been dead by the TNG years. But we see him in TNG, so Data and Lore were created long after ToS.
-
of this is the talk back it generated.
-
old spock time travels back in his ship..then after gets up and stretches his legs and goes to change his pants and shirt into something more befitting TOS era and opens the cupboard to find WESLEY has hitched a ride!...."hiya Mr Spock!! Captain Picard has told me all about you!! did you used to know captain kirk?! and what was he like and.."
camera then pans to outside ship and we hear a scream then a phaser sound...then we see Wesleys body being ejected out the ship...it expands then pops into crystalized bloody pieces -

if it doesnt have singing hippies of a scene with a midget riding kirks back...count me out
-
Biggest letdown ever, totally fake. If Quint or Merrick had run it, I'd just attribute it to them being their usual fuck-up selves, no big deal. Herc has his ear closer to the ground, and shoulda known it was debunked hours later by Trekmovie. All that being said, Star Trek: Countdown is THE MOST IMPORTANT TIE-IN EVER PRODUCED IN TREKDOM! EVER!!
-
dammit i shouldn't be reading these spoilers. i want to go into this as a total surprise
-
First, no one is saying these characters will appear in the tos time period. If you follow news on this film you'll know, scenes take place less then a decade after the last TNG Movie...which i won't even name.
-
A good thing, film is not bound by conventional time. I'm not sure if any of you "film bros" know this but, you can rearange time any way you want once it's put to film, or ccD or hard drive etc...This film jumps around in time quite a bit.
We're used to most trek films taking place, at most, over the course of a few days, maybe a week. The writers were quick to note this: There is no Universal law physics that states a Star trek film cannot skip around the time line...without time travel.
The best time machine is a motion picture camera. -
I bet we'll see "Way to Eden" hippies in the background somewhere.
Mark my word.
We will have space Hippie's -
he'll be seen briefly chowing down on a BLT as pine walks past a 23rd century sandwich shop...
-
In NEMESIS he died, and left behind a doppleganger. I wonder if the movie would address that, or if the comic does for that matter.
-
If Data couldn't have been around during the time of TOS, then explain how he was able to meet Mark Twain while working as a hotel bellhop?
-
It appears from what I can gather that the movie will be completely in the Alternate TOS Timeline.
It begins before Kirk is born, and cover various points in Kirk's career up to and including assuming command of the Enterprise.
With a 2 hour running time, and a faster pace than is ususal for a Trek movie, I suspect a lot of story will be covered in the movie.
I do not believe we will actually see anything in the Post-Nemesis TNG timeline. All of the preamble events from the TNG era are already covered in the Countdown comics that will take us all the way to the opening moments of the movie.
I suspect the second half of the movie will be close to real-time in storytelling terms, while there will be a number of jumps in the first half (From Baby, to small boy, to events leading to the Academy, to Kobayashi Maru, to first getting on Enterprise).
It'll likely be linear, but jump ahead a couple of times to cover events. -

The Cloverfield monster will be the cameo!!! I knew it!!!
by mrmysteryguest
-
Growing up I was a huge fan of TNG, but even I can admit their movies sucked. TNG just didn't get the movie formula right like TOS did. So sticking any TNG stuff into this new movie just reminds me of them sticking Janeway into Nemesis. Bad idea. Keep It Simple (Stupid)!
-
Can't wait to see that movie !
-
Nice Who reference.
-
Well the spoiler I'm talking about is that I read earlier here that Data, captain of the Enterprise, rescues somebody or nother, and that leads directly into the movie. If Data is in the movie, then, um, well it kind of contradicts Abram and his boys talking about how bringing back Kirk would violate canon.
-
we'll never see it's like again - how can a film not have midgets
-
Creating an alternate time line which all the subsequent movies will take place in is just lame. Just make a interesting new movie and forgot about trying to use the old actors from the past shows and movies. This comes from a fan of all of those.
-
... an alien crew member in the background looks just like the Cloverfield monster.
-
FUCK IT!
-
and the story 'jumps' through Kirk's career up to becoming captain. there are a few things in Kirk's past that I hope are not undone [Mitchell, Finnegin, the vampire cloud] and I hope we get a reference to the Kirk family's experience while living on Tarsus IV [or at the very least they leave that period open for sequels]
-
He lives in Iowa. The timeline changes. He grows up differently. That's the point.
-
For some reason Bale does remind me of him, especially in American Psycho.
-
Fan-diddly-damn-tastic.
-
becomes a starship captain. the massacre on Tarsus VI happens before such a promotion [kodos is too cool a villain to "undo"]
-
keep fucking with Kirk's life
-
I just found out why Grace Lee Whitney left Star Trek. I'm shocked. I never knew that.
-
I wish it was true
But it's not :( -
LET'S SEE THOSE BABIES!!!!!
-
They're always making this stuff too tight.
The Federation is big, Starfleet is big, the universe is big.
Stop tying everyone and everything into a concept as small as that coffee shop where Friends used to whine together.
-
cuz you know, that has been takei's dream for the past 20 years OH MY!!!!!!!!
-
Yes yes I know you're full of shit, but maybe I can shoehorn your half assedness into something that almost makes sense as a fan wank.
In an Enterprise episode, Brent Spiner appeared as an ancestor to Soong, the man who created data. In that episode, this elder soong was interested in eugenics but had to abandon it when his efforts went all KHHHHHAAAAAANNNNNN!!! on him. in that episode, he said that he would be switching his focus to AI, but it may take several generations. This is canon. Okay. Now, lets say, maybe, he did build data in the pre-TOS timeframe, but didn't work out the sentience thing just right. Starfleet did study data for nearly 200 years top secretly in San Fran, but eventually decided the effort was in vein and shut the project down in the pre TNG era. They turned over Data to Soong's descendant, the Soong we know, who took
Data to a colony, and working independently, solved Data's self awareness problem. He had to flee because of the Krystaline entity, leaving data on the planet. Starfleet picks him up again and fails to inform anyone that this is far from the first time they have encountered data. But, as he seems intelligent now, they sweep it under the rug and encourage him to enroll at the academy.
There Arcadian, I made your bullshit sort of make fan-wanky sense. Do I get a cookie or a blo job now or something? -
It's weird how the internet works now. All the eruptions of reviews last week sort of capped off my expectations, like that was the big event. Now it feels like Watchmen is old news. yeah, I'll go see it but, jeez, it just feels over. Hopefully we'll have one more official talkback to suss that all out though.
-
George Kirk is First Officer, and becomes the captain for 12 minutes.
It serves the dramatic purpose of giving Kirk a very personal reason, beyond Chris Pike, to go into Starfleet rather than remain a bum. -
This is a reboot of the original Gayness, there may be appearances of the TNG Gayness in order to tell the story of the reboot of he gayness via the eyes of Cock, a main character of the original non rebooted gayness.
In the sequal to J.J Abrahms reboot of Gayness, the crew of the U.S.S F.A.G 6969 are sent back in time to save a giant Cock, which differs significantly because in the original non reboot gayness, they save a whale. -
He's just on the Kelvin at the start of the movie.

It's fairly obvious from this talkback that there's still plenty of love for the Next Gen crew. This new film simply hasn't interested me in the slightest. It was only when the prequel comic hinted at Data and Picard cameos that I got even slightly interested.Next Gen really didn't get a good enough send off in the cinema.I hated Generations with a passion(the only film in my history of going to the cinema taht I went for a piss in the middle of),First Cointact was good but suffered from falling back on time travel shenanigans(hell, the cast were giving it their all- although Troi's drunk scene is still terrible),the next film(can never remember it's daman name)should never have been green-lit as a story. It wasa tv episode and a boring one.Rewatching it recently I was shocked to discover it was fairly watchable but...a MOVIE??!By the end of it the characters have progressed in no way.Data is confusingly more-childlike and naive.Strange film altogether.Nemesis..hmm.I didn't like the designs of the romulan ships, the Scimitar looked like Babylon 5.....where to begin. The Next Gen only ever used the Romulans well twice,in the 3rd season eps. The Enemy and the terrific The Defector.I think both Ron Moore eps too.Sadly it was an opportunity that was well and truly missed.Stewart et al are still fun together but the film simply made me angry at the flicks.I remember groaning loudly at Picards strange request of Troi that she try to put up with the psychic rapes????!!Losing his phaser at the end, breaking the Reman gun over the head of said Reman....literally laughable scenes.Such a shame.I adored The Next Gen. and really hoped we might get someone in to write and direct a film in such a fresh way as Meyer did with Khan.I'm afraid a cameo by Picard of Data in this new movie(I know, the rumour is bullshit)would not be a good idea as it would simply serve to confuse less-Trek interested fans.I don't like the whole premise of this new movie,it stinks of the same imagination-cancer that has Hollywood churning out reboots and remakes.Fuck it,I can still go back and rewatch old eps but new films genuinely don't get me excited much any more.Thank God there are still small gems to be found like Let the Right One In.

There's been a big brouhaha on this and other boards on the coming defenestration of this series with J.J. Abrams essentially taking character archetypes he likes and casting it into a Star Trek movies. The words "rape" and "bastardization" have been tossed about b/c from what I've read, that's not far off. That said, ANY of the slightest nods to the past series along with the far superior actors (Yes, even Shatner.) in this thing cannot hurt it in the least...or rather hurt it more.

should be kept - but whatever happens - no next gen at least [gay tv of the lowest kind]
-
If there's a final post-credits scene, where old Spock (played by Nimoy) returns to the 24th century. And while he's coming out of the time-machine or whatever, they use a voice clip of Shatner saying "Spock?" (some other appropriate sound clip) and the camera stays focused on Nimoy's face as he displays real emotion.
That way, they can undo Kirk's death, have no shatner in the movie, and STILL manage to keep it a secret from the net/fans/spies etc... -
"If Data couldn't have been around during the time of TOS, then explain how he was able to meet Mark Twain while working as a hotel bellhop?"
Time Travel. The episode was Times Arrow. -
"Oh and guys--saw Watchmen last night. This movie is NOT for fans of the book. Seriously. Having read Watchmen is going to diminish your enjoyment--you'll more than likely leave feeling kinda meh, just as I did."
Dude. You are so right. So many reviewers gave this such glowing praise. And truthfully, honestly, not hating or any bullshit, I saw it last night, and I would not pay money to see it a second time. -
The homophobia in this talkback is a fucking disgrace. 'Gayness', 'gay tv', 'Sulu raping Kirk'? Not funny or clever dudes.
-
What about the green lady Kirk slept with? Or that monster he ran away from in the desert? Both icons I want to see.

Star Trek has always had a very clear method for time travel, being that there is only ONE timeline that we see and travel back to the past does not create an offshoot reality. Check out a time travel episode for any number of examples. The prequel comic will end with the TNG crew failing to stop Nero from travelling back in time. In theory the moment Nero leaves, the entire TNG era will change and we'll see either the brand spanking "it's like the old TNG but better" or a rag-tag Battlestar Galactica type deal with the survivors of two dozen wars disasterous drifting aimlessly.
There's supposed to be a shock in the movie, something big that shouldn't have happened. We already have Kirk delaying his joining of starfleet by several years thanks to his dad's death. My guess is a major character is going to die or yeah, maybe Vulcan will blow up, that'd fuck humanity good and proper. -
Sure, at times it was stuck in the eighties or early nineties, but sometimes it is difficult to get over the crappy sets of the original. The crew had a good rapport and I enjoyed watching the show from week to week. That's about all you can ask from a Trek series.

# We first meet Uhura when Kirk is drunk at a Starfleet hangout in Iowa and he boorishly hits on her.
# JJ Abrams slips in a reference to his own mythology during the aforementioned bar scene when a patron asks for a Slusho. Also, product placement makes its first entry into the Trek Universe when Uhura orders a Budweiser Classic. -

OK I officially don't want to know anything else about this movi
by quadrupletree
it sounds like there are some nice surprises in store for us, so I'm officially excited to see this now. So far, everything I've seen looks like JJ pulled his pants down and took a steaming dump on Star Trek IMO. But I hope to God I'm wrong!!

1) There's the Mirror Universe. 2) There's the TNG episode where hundreds/thousands of alternate Enterprises are temporarily pulled into the "main" Trek continuity. Granted, these are examples of parallel universes, and not necessarily timelines that are offshoots of the main Trek continuity. HOWEVER . . . 3) There's the alternate timeline that Q facilitated in the TNG finale. Again, this is an offshoot of the main timeline. True, it's unclear if this was real or merely one of Q's tricks. HOWEVER . . . 4) There's the alternate timeline involving the Enterprise-C which resulted in Tasha Yar giving birth to her half-Romulan daughter, presumedly before Tasha Yar was even born. This is indeed, definitely, an offshoot of the main Trek continuity timeline.
-
but not totally. What I said was time travel to the past doesn't create alternate realities, what I meant was, if there ARE changes, then we only see the direct effect on the MAIN Trek timeline. The Tasha Yar saga is a perfect example. At the start Tasha dies. They encounter the Enterprise C and what happens? The main Trek timeline is distorted. When the Enterprise C goes back to the past with Tasha, the timeline reverts but with NEW features. ie Sela is born. There very well might be a reality where this never happened, where they never encountered the Enterprise C at all but Trek never acknowleges this. The same is going to be true for the upcoming movie, the premise is very similar. The Trek timeline is very linear, yes, okay offshoot realities are created wily nily and we get a glimpse every now and again, like the thousands of Enterprises episode where Worf hops dimensions but they're very clear that he returns to the prime universe aren't they?

When we use the term Gayness, I'm not talking about sucking cock gay. That would less humiliating than posting talk backs on how time travel is possible in Gay Trek.
Gay Trek is gay, like a man wearing a fanny pack. It's fucking super gay. George Tekai is no were near as gay as talking about how time travel is possible in the Gay Trey world and then trying to explain how it's done.
As for homophonia, no, I am not afraid to fight a gay guy. -
You'd like that, wouldn't you boogy110 - a bit of a wrestle with a gay guy? But seriously, people need to stop using 'gay' as a derogatory term. It's insulting and ignorant. By the way, I'm loving the new phrase you've disco ered... 'homophonia'. Maybe you're a genius after all! Also... bring on Star Trek.
