Hercules Has Seen The CW’s First New REAPER Since May!!

Published at:  Mar 03, 2009 11:35:38 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Tuesday’s first new “Reaper” in nine months arrives a little listless – clumsy, predictable and kinda dull, with a too-familiar subplot about Sock (the fat guy from “Invasion” or “Surface,” I forget which) wanting to put the bone to his newly discovered hot stepsister. The installment’s only real saving grace is Ray Wise’s devil, who does a funny little heinie dance in front of a sportscar.

Having said this, I fully predict those who loved every episode of season one will like tonight’s.

I’m assuming next week’s episode sucks too, if only because the CW didn’t forward that one along.

The good news is the CW did forward the March 17 episode and it’s got a lot of funny stuff in it; I especially enjoyed the devil in full “Bedazzled” mode, making life tricky for recovering alcoholics. I makes me kind of wish the show would ditch the escapee-of-the-week formula and instead just follow the adventures of Lucifer and his slacker antichrist spawn.

(A parting digression: the limitations of Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley sank the 2000 version of “Bedazzled,” but the 1964 Peter Cook-Dudley Moore version is comedy gold; “Reaper” fans are encouraged to seek it out, and perhaps even watch it in lieu of “Reaper” 2.1 and 2.2.)

8 p.m. Tuesday. The CW.

    Same shit, different day

    by valar1

The only reason to watch this show is that the interplay of Sock with other characters is full of hilarity, the rest of the show is your average Buffy retread.

Of course, every show is like that now- Chuck, Heroes, 24, BSG etc, they are all same shit different day plots, the only reason to watch any of this shit is to watch the characters.

Oh come on, season 1 was much smarter than most people...

    by derlanghaarige

    ...think!
Instead of going full story arc in the first episodes an scaring casual viewers away ("Oh no, I didn't watch last week. Now it's impossible for me to catch up and I have to stop watching. Same thing happened to me with Lost, 24 and Prison Break") they kept it simple, but already hinted early that there is more. (The subplot with the contract.) Then, when the story arcs kicked in, they find the right mix between "soul of the week" and cliffhanger. And even more important: They avoided one of the biggest cliches ever and let the Hero's love interest find out about what's going on after 2/3 of the first season!
I just wish people would have watched it anyway. Because even without all that, Reaper is one of the most entertaining shows on TV right now!

Heroes had characters in Season 1. Now it has chess pieces that move around based on whatever idiotic socio-political/emotional statement the writer wants to make that week. There is no regard for the backstory of Season 1, no regard for the character growth or evolution, it's simply plug pawn A into position to screw over pawn B.

    by mooly

I somewhat enjoyed season one, but lengthy gaps between eps and little promotion meant I often had no idea when new episodes were on. And as much as I enjoy the characters of the show, the constantly recycled plotlines are so identical to each other you can practically set your watch to them. I agree this is a major crutch of the show they are going to have to change somehow. I think all they can (and should) do is have bigger, more evil escapees and make recapturing them take a number of episodes, if not a whole season. Kind of like Buffy/Angel's seasonal demons. This could also make the consequences of the escape more real and serious, instead of the death of some extra that I couldn't care less about. I liked that Season 1 ended with the angels who may be just as evil as the demons...but if Season 2 starts back with the recycled plotlines, watching will be a challenge regardless of the enjoyable characters.

How can you compare the most overrated teeniegirl-soap of all time aka Buffy or pure entertainment like Chuck and Reaper with BSG or Lost? Hell, even Heroes and 24 are way more ambitious. (not successful in most cases these days, but at least they try to be more then case of the week-crap)

I loved this show a lot last year, and chrth you are right they really started to play around with the formula and ditching "soul-of-the-week" for awesome hilarious nefarious good times!! I have a feeling this second season premiere is trying to retread and hook new audience members by presenting a by-the-books opening that can satisfy fans from last year and hook new ones by starting at a simple place (Chuck did and admitted to doing the same thing this year). The only thing I'm scared of is that after this 13 episode season run....will there be enough fans to bring it back again?? This is the CW after all

    by supertoyslast

After the fantastic climax of the first series they're going back to escapee-of-the-week? I loved the pilot but became less enthused with early episodes which followed a predictable formula. The only reason to watch those was for the slacker vibe and (especially) Sock. Then the plot kicked in, building gradually and expertly, and the show became awesome. Why do they think new viewers can be pulled in by the repetitive plots which failed to bring in viewers in the first place? They should have some scene-setting to bring new viewers up to speed and start a new big plot spanning all 13 episodes. Hook people from the beginning or it's gone.

    by supertoyslast

I mean, basically saying "this show sucks so, even if you're a fan, you should watch this thing that *I* like instead". And slightly snide comments like "I fully predict those who loved every episode of season one will like tonight’s." As if fans of this show are easily-pleased morons with low standards. Well, I didn't love every episode of the first season. I loved the pilot and the last few episodes were truly great. The rest were good for the characters despite the lazy plotting.

The reason for Herc's comments is because he runs the coax section with zero objectivity. Anything he doesn't personally like barely gets any kind of coverage and when it does he uses it as an opertunity to bash the shows he doesn't like and insult the fans of that show. Usually it results in a cascade of flaming insults cast his way by talkbacker, it'sactually really strange but I guess he has to fill the column with something since he can no longer sing the praises of such shows as Gilmore Girls.

...last year, caught the season premiere (?) tonight by accident. Still a lot of fun, and I love the chemistry between the main cast - especially Sam's buddies, and between Sam and the Devil. Now, for all those bitching about it not having arcs and what not...I don't get it. This Andy arc has been ongoing for a while. This mythos of Sam being baby Devil has been going on for a while (I'm assuming?) and it looks like they set up a new one tonight with Sam's chance encounter with that dude who beat the Devil. Anyways, it got me fired up for the season.

the last half one season one definitely kicked it up a few notches, which i only found out on dvd, since i too ditched the show early on for going nowhere. but i agree that the show works best through the character interactions and it falters when dealing with the souls. Sam drawing a Star of David for a pentagram, and flying around with a wand/cattleprod while Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies plays, definite highlights. The Sock/step-sister romance, eh. Having 40+ escapees doesn't say much for Hell's security, though. And they seemed to have dropped Sam's on-again/off-again powers.

Now unfortunately, they fired one of my co workers so I had to work tonight and missed the show on tv. however I did Download it off the internet. So tell does it really cut from Sam getting hit in the head by Alan(wiki says thats his name)to ads to the next and everything just seems like everything went alright or is he knocked out and dreaming. I'd take the latter because the vibe of the episode totally changed once he got hit in the head and they came back from ads. And herc said they forwarded eps 1 & 3 but not 2 to him. Hmm....honestly I love this show, but if they really just had an escaped soul hit him in the head with a vessel and never explain what happened to the vessel after that. I just don't know why they would do that. unless they were trying to trick all of us, that's just lame. sorry I just think it's lame

    by mr.ftw

Was fantastic. It jumped right back in with both feet and was histerical. As much as I love all the more serious genre shows that are out right now, Reaper is refreshing with it's light hearted comedic adventures. How Herc just dismisses this show and claims that last night's episode wasn'very good just further proves his non-objectivity to running coax. It's crazy that the rest of the sight from the movie reviews, to books and the comics all have multiple voices that contribute but here on coax there is just one singular voice, Herc. And if Herc doesn't personally like it then it's crap. Coax need more contributors to balance things out.

But it quickly faded as I relieved the next scene was all exposition - Alan got away and Sam needs to find him and figure out how he too can beat the devil. However I think Alan calling Sam gullible is more than just tricking Sam into giving him the prod so he could hit him on the head. It seemed to me that when Sam was trying to zap Alan the light on the prod was red and when Alan hit Sam on the head with it I saw the light switch to green. That led me to believe he was lying and hadn't really beat the devil, making Sam's giddy optimism at the end kind of sad.

    Great suggestion I heard

    by chrth

Since KY Lexy isn't coming back, how about a 3rd season of Reaper on ABC Family? It'd pair nicely with Greek.

    Great show

    by my pretty pony

The 'Sugar Plum Fairies' thing was most definitely hilarious as was just about everything that came out of the Devil's mouth. Sock and Ben also had some great lines. I like this fun, quirky show. I wish they'd bring back the gay demon neighbors, though, as well as the DMV demon. I also wish this show stood a chance at a 3rd season. It's just not right that tons of people will watch mindless crap like "Grey's Anatomy" or "Dancing w/ the Stars" while little gems like "Reaper" are ignored...I noticed that Andi's best friend/Sock's ex was missing from the ep. Is she no longer on the show? I know she wasn't in every episode last season, but I didn't notice if the actresses' name was left off the credits.

Chrth: So is Sam's real father dead?

    by mindtrip

I remember the father being buried and then his wife rescuing him, and I guess finding out that they are demons themselves?, but is the burial the basis for Sam's belief he's dead or did something else happen?

That's my sister, I've got dibs!

Some real nose-milk lines. Still like this show a lot even if the "soul of the week" formula is a bit boring.

    Missy Peregrym..

    by spiketbb

..would be reason enough for me to watch this, she's great. But everything I love about the show as back. I wonder how much was filmed before they new about the long hiatus and how much after wards?
The Devil was perfect as always. But it also hinted at a way to beat The Devil even in real life. Sam enjoying what he could out of life and feeling good despite everything. The Devil wanting Sam to be depressed and whiny so he could enjoy him suffering. Then trying to ruin Sam's good mood with indicating it was a sign Sam would become a great evil. Then the rain. But Sam kept his good mood till the end. But having Andi back can do that for a guy.
I do wonder, however, if The Devil isn't playing a double bluff. Maybe he really does like Sam and think he is special but since he is The Prince of Lies, he lies. Pretends he wants Sam all beaten down in order to see the boy grow some spine.
But when it gets right down to it, this version of The Devil can bring the evil and the power with the best of them. I'd love to see him go horn to horn with John Glover's Satan from Brimstone.
But Herc's reaction to with such a strong hate surprises me. I am now thinking, I could use his reviews as "Bizarro reviews". If he 'no am not liking" something then I'd probably enjoy it, and vice versa.

Very bad, too much Sock, not enough Devil

    by drath

Sock sucks. I didn't mind him too badly last season, but he in no way should have dominated the premiere of season 2. They obviously think this poop is funny, so I need to be clear, HE'S NOT. The Devil and Sam's chemistry is much better and their relationship is what is worth watching in the series. More interaction with the denizens of Hell is what the show needs, not bullshit lame ideas like an evil english bitch who wants a greencard or this hot but clueless foreign half sister. Okay, fine, next week they're getting back to the hellspawn with a demon making out with Sock--but wait, more Sock already? Fuck this guy! Didn't we already cover him being in an awkward relationship with a demon when he and Delores Herbig made out? That's the only time he was actually funny, but seriously, give this asshat a rest! This incest half-sister crap is painful, only Sock himself would like it. Meantime the fate and condition of Sam's weasel father and deceptive mother were not even teased at, and the gay demons were MIA. This was an unbelievably lame premiere. I went in rooting for it, and came out thinking I'll be okay with it if they cancel it now. I understand where Herc is coming from, so I guess Bizarro Drath am sad.

    Oh whoops

Ben makes out with the demon next week. Ben barely registers, but he's not as annoying as Sock. Still not impressed by season 2 though.

    Best feel-good show on TV

    by chimpjnr

I don't understand why more people don't love it. In this ugly climate, I would have thought it was the perfect tonic. Sock is simply hilarious, and Ray Wise...perfect. I wonder if he would be as effectice as the devil if most of us didn't remember him as Leeland Palmer, dancing around with a golf club?
