You think he sucks because you've made up your mind somehow that he sucks. It was a 3 minute clip, hardly showcasing much of anything. No monologue or anything. Let's reserve judgement until the first show.

it's this is how Jimmy has always talked. It's not exactly smooth TV talk like we are used to, but I think he could get better later on. I'm not betting on it, but regardless he will be better then Carson Daily.

    by choptop

That is my favorite argument for EVERYTHING (especially when referring to people in entertainment & politics). It doesn't matter if we could do a better job... WE'RE NOT THE ONES DOING THE JOB. If HE can't do a better job they need to find someone who CAN. **note that I'm not really ranting about Fallon, I think he'll do ok but not great. I'm really just ranting about douchebags who use that phrase to try to argue in favor of people that possess no real qualities to get behind.)

He has a friendly, warm on screen persona, an awesome house band (Roots), and smart humor. He needs time to settle into his own and separate his show from Conan's. Conan will also rock at 11:30. In about a year, both will be comfortable in their slots and a great lineup for the next 10-15 years.

I love Conan now, so give Jimmy a break. Not to say I'm a big fan, but I would give him a few months to get into his groove, then judge him. The first few weeks will be rough, especially with everyone comparing him to Conan. He won't be as good or polished as Conan. Hopefully he has some good writers like Conan had.

I mean i think the guy is funny aswell but im just curious if its and idea a couple of talkbackers had and decided to run with, or if it was leaked or whatnot that he was actually in the running for the show. I mean, I'm surprised they didn't go to casey mccall, he probably woulda been game even tho he turned down the show when they offered it to conan(whose a real tv nerd, and actually gets the reference i just made.)

Someday, I will be able to specify the content on my cable access so that not only will shows never show up as available, the net down-voting by all subscribers will ultimately mean it will be cheaper for NBC to just send Jimmy Fallon to the one house that watches. It will be a win-win, cuz he'll get an NBC-paid trip to visit his mother.

    Demographics

    by anakin whoopass

Conan vs. Letterman introduces an age-appeal difference that didn't exist with Leno vs. Letterman. Old people will be able to watch Leno in prime time and go to bed earlier, or watch Leno and then Letterman. Conan will get younger viewers than Letterman. By the time Fallon and Ferguson are on the demographic split will be extreme, probably moreso than when the choice was Conan vs. Snyder.

WRONG. The noobs writing that are kids who have READ that in all those press stories and regurditate what they're told. Grats you're 20 and you never even saw Late Night until 2001. Conan was exactly the same in 93-94 as he is now... plus he had Andy. The Network hated him because he had been shoved down their throats but he was NOT terrible or really even different. It's all bullshit PR from NBC they invented back in 99-00 when Conan became popular to make him more sympathetic. And it worked nice work pavlov's dogs.

I loved Conan when he first started.

    by jimmay

I actually think he lost something the longer the show went on. When it first started the beauty of it exactly was just how weird and awkward the whole thing was. He was just some clever dork given his own TV show and the license that obscurity grants a late night talk show. He wasn't popular and the ratings were anemic, but he used that to his advantage by making the show his own weird little world, free from the expectation to 'Leno' his comedy for a mainstream audience. Pimpbot, Oldie, Masturbating Bear, NBC Peacock, the annoying pecking Ostrich, Sad little Timmy, every night was a fantastic cavalcade of bizarre and arcane humor. It's weird to see him mainstream now, I can't really wrap my head around him taking over Leno's spot. . .so many great memories of staying up late to watch his show on high school nights, usually stoned and just aghast at the fact this show was even aloud to exist. Good times.

    CONAN'S EARLY YEARS WERE GREAT

    by mullah omar

I agree 100% with Happy Boy, the people who write that Conan needed years to become funny are reciting some fictionalized party line rather than a personal observation.

I watched Conan regularly for maybe his first 8 years or so, past the time Andy left, and if anything, I'd say he started out stronger because he would do ANYTHING for a laugh and it was clear he had absolutely no tether so save him if he started tanking. Conan for me is stuff like the Masturbating Bear, constant Bill Clinton and Bob Dole interviews, Dippy the Hippie, Pimpbot, the Staring Contests, and other sketches that it sounds like some Fallon apologists here probably never even heard of.

I preferred the "anything goes" attitude of Conan's first few years to latter years, though I'd bet fans of Leno-style formulaic comedy feel the opposite towards him. The show might have been less slick than it is now but it was no less funny.

i understand comparing this to Conan's first year because it's 'late night,' but the situation is way different. the majority of people didn't know who Conan was, or who wrote any given Simpsons episode. we were subjected to YEARS of Fallon on snl... how can they think this is a good idea? i was hoping that Peter Griffen beating him up for not being Carol Burnet was the last of it. and he doesn't deserve The Roots. i'd rather watch 'Roots' every night (though to be honest, i'm game for anything with Geordi. Reading Rainbow!). i'm sick of the red sox, i'm sick of Jimmy Fallon. and put away your 'if you don't like him then don't watch,' - I DONT WANT TO SEE HIM ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN UNSOLVED MYSTERIES

He was getting payed something like 2 million a year to just sit by and wait for Conan to move to late night. NBC must of thought he was gonna become a huge star. This deal was made before his movie career tanked. Even if this show is a bomb NBC is stuck with him and he will already have made millions before having to do anything.

    I'm totally indifferent to Fallon

by shut the fuck up donny

Hell, I thought he was very good in "Fever Pitch." So, I just can't get worked up into a frenzy over this.

However, I will say that it's unlikely he will turn me away from Craig Ferguson. I saw that him in Vegas last year and nearly pissed myself laughing so hard. The man is legitimately funny and knows how to work an audience.

    Fallon is totally underrated.

    by cookylamoo

His performance as a running corpse in Monkeybone is bizarrely fantastic. Of course, nobody ever sat through Monkeybone that long to see it.

He needs Horatio Sanz as his sidekick

So they can giggle at each other through entire segments and fuck up line readings. It'd be great.

"...run out of NBC cast members to appear on the show?"

    by big jim

It won't take long, especially since NBC next year will have only 2 hours of Primetime during the week, so that's fewer shows to pull from. And most of them will be too busy doing their shows and appearing on Leno's "The Tonight at 10 Show" and Conan's "Tonight Show" to have any time left for Fallon.

Am I the only one who doesn't dig "The Roots"?

    by bob loblaw law blog

I mean, they're talented musicians, but definitely not a band or genre I care about. It reminds me of the constant reggae and hip-hop I would hear blasting from a stereo as I walked past frat houses on my way to class while I was in college...and, probably not coincidentally, The Roots played my college town at least once or twice a year. In fact, it looks like they're playing there again in August.Anyway, no disrespect of The Roots, but if Conan had them as his band back in the day, it would've been as "meh" for me as Carson Daly's house bands. I'll take the ass-kicking awesomeness of the MAX WEINBERG 7 any day (and every day) on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O'BRIEN.

    Big Jim

    by bob loblaw law blog

You, of course mean, two hours of primetime programming EACH DAY (instead of three)... unless they're going to just start showing old reruns of F TROOP instead of new shows. ;)I still wish Conan would have filled his studio with a minty foam (as threatened so many times) for one of his last shows. That would have been epic (and yeah, probably hazardous to the those in the studio).

    I strongly dislike Jimmy Fallon

    by david lazarus long

in pretty much everything I've ever seen him do. He might be better on Late Night, where looking at the camera is what you're actually SUPPOSED to be doing, not just a nervous tick because he knows he's a hack. That being said... 3 more months til Conan is back.

    Conan when he first started

    by hst666

Often had the most original and surreal bits, but they often weren't that funny. I watched him from midway through the first year on (they did not show him in Buffalo until February '94 when the Goo Goo Dolls were first on.) Part of it may that may my sensibility chaned or I grew more accustomed to his style, but I do not think he was a consistently funny then as he got to be by year 3 or 4. He also was extremely stiff during interviews in the beginning.

The awesome parts of Conan's early shows

    by hst666

were (1) the interesting guests he would get and (2) the AWESOME music acts. Whoever the music booker was was great at his/her job. So many cool indy bands played there first.

This might be a specific instance...

    by the eskimo

...but my mom and dad used to hate Conan because all they saw were snippets of him in hotel rooms or random weekends. (They're old, don't stay up late)But then we vacationed in Florida and early re-runs would come on some random stations and they started to really like him. I think the "Leno Crowd" will come around once Canon gets a few shows in the earlier slot under his belt. He's not exactly doing the Masterbating Bear any more...but how cool would it be if that was his opening skit on the first night after his monologue!
