BIG MAN JAPAN will stomp your wimpy ass!

Published at:  Feb 25, 2009 7:06:01 PM CST

Hey there! Harry here. You know, sometimes it may seem like Fantastic Fest is a magical venue of awesome. Still other times, you forget how magical and awesome it really is. Then a trailer gets posted on Apple's Glorious Quicktime Cine-Orgy site and you watch it... smile... and say to yourself, "I SAW THAT TWO YEARS AGO!"

BIG MAN JAPAN was a secret midnight screening at FANTASTIC FEST 2007. It was a crazy as fuck mockumentary about Japan's last "BIG MAN" that defends the nation from various giant monsters. The film is completely British in its sense of dry humor and crazy as the most whacked out animated offerings of Monty Python with a decidedly demented Japanese bent. I fucking love BIG MAN JAPAN. It's absurdly brilliant and funky as hell. It's the sort of movie that as you watch it you literally question the drugs, the sanity and God for allowing it to exist, and then you thank the lord you can see it with your own eyes. BIG MAN JAPAN is going to stomp your wimpy ass - with a big steel pipe. It's amazing!

BIG MAN JAPAN's New Trailer is in Glorious Quicktime!

    Caught this on dvd

    by red_weed

it came out a few months back in Australia. My god it was genious. I loved it, hilarious. I'm still a bit dubious about the ending, but i guess it's just about as bizzare as the rest of the movie. But the main character is actually quite touching and tragic. recomended

    Just watched the trailer.

    by red_weed

Wow they show a bunch of cool stuff from the movie. But really the big cg fights are only a small part of the movie. The majority of the film is the documentary stuff examining this guy. It's a real character study, but seem as i loved the character i didn't care. Just don't go in expecting non-stop action and fights coz you'll be disappointed, it starts off quite slow... Am I really first?

Remember the 1984 Mag -and a feature called Asskickers?

    by toadkillerdog

The Asskickers of the Fantastic. They had one story about a guy called -Godammmo, who was just an extra, extra, extra large dude wearing a lizard suit. This has that sort of feel to it.

Dai-Nipponjin (big man japan) SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS

    by nutnics

Saw this movie earlier this year, and wow! what a half-assed attempt at something that could've been interesting. Following in the tradition of boring out there asian films like CJ7, Shark Skin Man Peach Hip Girl, & Last Life in the Universe, this film trods through the life of some disenfranchised Japanese douche that can become a fat cartoon and fight other faggy giant monsters that die by falling over or something.

The end is total rubbish and is worth a chuckle, but this whole movie is knee-jerk fanboy hand jobbery at an epic proportion. Avoid, or download.

    The CG

    by augustusgloop

I recall being VERY surprised to learn that parts of this were entirely in CG. My understanding is that his 'big' self is done *entirely* in CG, though it looks very convincingly like they've done some kind of latex puppet version of him. I enjoyed the move more for the wry humor than for the fight sequences, but both had me laughing my ass off.

I remember as a kid picking up a dog eared copy of Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic life.. What a great read and made me into a life long Doc fan. Rest in peace Philip thank you.

I too read the Doc Savage book - being a huge fan of the pulps. I would highly recommedn reading A Feast Unknown if you want to read more about how Farmer linked all of the worlds great literary adventurers. From Tarzan to Doc to James Bond. It is a true 'adult' themed book, but absolutely stunning in it's conception and execution.

Thank you for the look out, I will certainly track that book down, I did read Tarzan Alive were he talked about the Wold Newton family of mutants that would become the great heroes. What an inspiration.
I am a huge fan of the pulps myself, nice to meet you.

don't watch this movie alone or you'll HATE it

    by captaincapslock

it's a terrible movie, but if you've got some people willing to sit around go 'wtf' with you it won't be so painful. i caught this movie after it had been hyped on another site and YUCK. it starts out good with the dry mockumentary vibe, then proceeds to get weirder and weirder.

Always good to find Fellow Doc savage fans

    by toadkillerdog

Slight correction: I have not read Feast Unknown for quite a while, I did confuse the plot with Tarzan Alive - it is not quite the Wold Newton storyline, but a parallel one in which he has very thinly veiled Doc and Tarzan characters. It has some breathtaking violence in it though, and not for the easily offended.

    Matsumoto Hitoshi

    by unaju

The director is, in my opinion, a leading figure in Japanese television comedy. He's mostly known in the west as the "boke" half of the manzai duo Downtown. You might have seen him in YouTube clips of "Do Not Laugh" episodes. This movie to me feels like a compilation of bits and pieces of his TV sketch comedy concepts. Harry hit it the bullseye with the Monty Python comment -- Some people will find it brilliant and others will not get it. He hosts a music talkshow called Hey Hey Hey and it cracks me up to see the likes of Britney Spears and Janet Jackson getting hauled into the show by their music label PRs and the singers have no idea what's going on as the live audience burst into laughter at Matsumoto's wise cracks. In one of their past sketch comedy shows, Downtown had Sakamoto Ryuichi put on soiled whitey tighties to play the brother of not-so-bright super hero Aho Aho Man (Stupid Stupid Man) -- that translates to comedy gold in Matsumoto's brand of comedy. I think most western audiences (or no Japanese) would have a hard time finding this funny and I'm sure a lot of it get lost in the translation.

Big Man Japan at Alamo Drafthouse

    by man in suit

I saw this movie at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin this past summer: It was a lot of fun. The Drafthouse played clips of Hitoshi Matsumodo's bizarre sketch comedy show before the feature. He seems like a real manic performer, so I think part of the appeal of the movie for his Japanese fans may be that the movie is deliberately paced and underplayed at the outset. I imagine it's pretty funny to see someone known for extremely outrageous comedy giving a deadpan documentary-style performance for a good portion of the movie. I can only imagine, though, as I'm not Japanese and don't know the guy's work. So, for me it started real slow but once it kicked in, it was worth the wait. I think anyone that goes with a big crowd and those expectations in mind will have a great time.

    Man in Suit

    by rabiddogma

Are you talking about Gaki no Tsugai? Five guys (Matsumoto included) doing comedy bits? There's a killer five-part series from the show on Joost - basically, he wins a race against the others, so they have to stay in a gymnasium for 24 hours and be subjected to random pseudo-beatings. Good stuff.

Anytime you find out Tim League has programmed your Midnight Movie entertainment, all you can do is order a bucket of beer and strap yourself in because you're about to be subjected to some extremely weird shit by a maniacal freak. Expect pussy monsters. Expect penis guns. Expect mind altering and morally questionable subject matter. Anyway, what some of the Talkbackers above are saying is true. This movie starts out EXTREMELY slow and you've got to stick with it to get to the center of blowpop. It's best watch with a group of friends. Drink some beer and kill the first 30 minutes or so and then sit back get weirded out.
