Ming-Na Joins Robert Carlyle and Lou Diamond Phillips Aboard STARGATE UNIVERSE!!

Published at:  Feb 25, 2009 3:02:10 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

I had heard that the “Stargate Universe” plan was to hire a name like Robert Carlyle and surround him with a bunch of good-looking nobodies – but Entertainment Weekly’s Mike Ausiello now reports that “ER” vet Ming-Na (“Push”) will be joining Carlyle and Lou Diamond Phillips (“Supernova,” “Che”) aboard the lost-in-space spinoff.

Find all of Ausiello’s exclusive on the matter here.

I Love The Fact That Ming-Na Has Been Cast, But...

    by media messiah

...I don't like the direction of her character as the cold corporate bitch as written in the series Stargate: Universe. She is so much more than that, and I hope they change the character. Maybe they can quickly reveal that she is really a mole agent on a mission to protect ancient secrets for the good of everyone? Whatever the case, I want to see a empathic Ming-Na...not some cold stereotype of a bossy, uncaring woman...who's more male than female. Enough with playing women as if they are men, because it is PC to do so, I want to see feminine, girly girl women, for once in a long time!!!

    Media Messiah---Elizabeth Weir

    by dioxholster

what you are talking about was found in Elizabeth weir's character, yes i know she appeared cold, but that was just a visage she really showed her feminine side at times, especially before she died or whatever, death means something else in the world of stargate. Sam carter as a leader was too feminine for the job unfortunately, but she was good as second in command type in SG-1 especially because of Jack and Daniel who complemented her character. Elizabeth Weir is the paradigm of an ideal leader in my opinion, she presented a good blend of leadership and compassion as well as not forgetting that she is first and foremost a woman. she also give a sense of depth to the events that happened on Atlantis somehow, her elegant presence was felt in a funny way i could compare her to the hive queens in wraith ships lol. after she was gone, something was missing and that added depth was gone---some things became silly, and others turned soft. because atlantis had no direction, no boss. it was only when Woolsey-robert picardo stepped in as leader, he brought back the classy element. a throwback to old fashioned ways of diplomacy and confrontation has now a challenge to test these ways with new obstacles that no man can prepare for unless youre someone with a law degree :)

    by himbo

I've enjoyed the previous series, just because they were internally consistent: If a story were opened, it was fair game for subsequent writers. And while the plots were reset regularly, the characters were never reset: they evolved and suffered consequences (those that remained with the show anyway).
If they try to turn it into BattleStargate, with mercurial characters, and disposable plotlines in the interest of "edginess", then it will fail.
And while many folks call this SG: Voyager. Voyager was an interesting concept that was very poorly executed. I'd like to see it done over with the occasional cold ruthlessness that we got to see in the SG franchises.

MGM foots the bill for all Stargate production, SciFi just has distribution rights/costs.
Which really makes me wonder WTF they were thinking when they cancelled SG1 and then exercised their exclusivity rights. The Stargates cost them almost nothing and they make huge profts on them through commercials, especially for the constant 24 hour reruns.
Which, BTW, is the exact opposite of BSG where they share in the costs of production with their Canadian and British counterparts.

    by eyeofpolyphemus

I am curious how Sci Fi's sister network can air such interesting shows on a relatively low budget, yet sci fi cannot swing it. Monk, Psyche, and Burn Notice are fresh, fun takes on old television concepts. sci Fi ought to be able to do the same in its related genres. considering the guest star crossovers from Sci Fi to USA, i have to assume the creative teams have connections. Use them for innovative ideas!

    by offput

In more ways than one... TNG they ventured out and explored stuff. DS9 they had a station from which to venture on the edge of a new path into deeper space with a previously unknown enemy from that space. VOY they get flung far away and have to get home somehow. In fact, SG1 had Rodney McKay as a technical character who only had a few major episodes and then moved on to be the tech hero of SGA and something similar happened with O'Brien on TNG/DS9. I can't believe I've never noticed the similarities before.

There's something about this casting which reeks of "this show won't survive 22 episodes". Dioxholster: Dr. Weir

    by media messiah

You are right about Weir, but the problem I have with the new show is that they have character descriptions up at Sci Fi Wire and the description of Ming-Na's character is an absolute duplicate of Weir save for the fact that she is a human resource exec of some import. I just find it a bit too PC, and over the top, for science fiction to keep depicting women-- these days, as being hard like the stereotypical military service man. It is frankly ridiculous!!! What makes a woman...a woman, are her God given differences from and to men..which are amazing...and there are so many different aspects of women to be found, why not explore some of them instead of the stereotype of "the bitch who really has a heart of gold"...it is just getting old? I think the writers and producers of these shows would be better served modeling these characters after their own wives, girlfriends, sisters, and mothers to have a better informed view of women, and the so-called modern woman...ala what Joss Whedon did with Buffy. The daily normal non super hero aspects of the character were a mix of real women, from Whedon's mother, to his wife, to producer Marti Nixon, and even Sarah Michelle Gellar...and it worked brilliantly. You can tell that kind of writing style has also seeped into various shows, namely situation comedies since the days of Seinfeld (pre-Buffy). From Everybody Loves Raymond to King of Queens...or even a dramedy show like Boston Legal you see it, where writers are often adapting things that have happened in their real lives or to someone close to the shows that they do--often nothing extraordinary, just daily...and delightful, human nuances. Speaking of Boston Legal...boy would I love to see a science fiction or speculative fiction series written, directed and produced like that!!!

through just about season 4 or so of SG-1. After that, try as I might I just couldn't get into it the same way. The last few seasons of SG-1 had some interesting stuff with Vala, but it was a totally different show. I really wish they had kept the more serious sci-fi tone of the first two seasons and not tried to make it 'funny'. RDA's quirky jokes were good in the first few seasons, but when they tried making all the characters like that... it just never worked. Atlantis I kept watching hoping it would pick up, but it never did. This one... eh. Sounds way too much like Voyager.

I'm tuired of the we're trapped and can't dial the Stargate to get back home formula. They have tried that on and off on Atlantis and now this show??? Why not just have them discover this ship and use it to explore the Universe??? I created a similar concept pre-Stargate...the series, and I thought it was very special but when Stargate went to a series, many of my concepts went with it...and this would be the final bit of it...but what I think was so cool about my idea is that it didn't copy Space: 1999 or Lost In Space ala Stargate: Universe, which is starting to look like Voyager or even Galactica??? Leave the "We're are lost in the stars!" formula behind, and just go for, "Hey, we found this ship...and are using it to further explore the Universe." That will leave open all kinds of possibilies and won't limit the show with respect to storytelling.

    What happened to Robert Carlyle?

    by thewaqman

He's such a promising actor, but he hasn't made much of a splash really.

    "I created a similar concept pre-Stargate...the series,"

Translation : I had an idea.
This is such a rare event, that I marked it in my calendar and everything.

"and I thought it was very special"

I don't doubt it. That YOU thought it was special, I mean.

"but when Stargate went to a series, many of my concepts went with it."

Oh Noze! Dey Stole My IDEAZ! GETZ OUT OF MY BRAINZ!

Media Messiah, the frustrated writer. Everyone's stealing my ideas! They must have read my blog. Wow, what a textbook case of paranoia. Always a laugh, here at the AICN.

    Stargate is Flash Gordon

    by jodet

It really is. All that time running around the enemy's fortress and hoping to not get caught. But that's ok, I like Flash Gordon.

Mulan!!! I love that she's in a space show!

    by drath

I hope this means the show will be better than the previous Stargate shows (probably not likely). Lou Diamond Phillips? Isn't he on another show? He could just be in many different shows playing the same guy from Wolf Lake everytime.
