JONAH HEX and GREEN LANTERN place their names on dates in 2010!!!

Published at:  Feb 25, 2009 2:56:39 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Wow. You know. I really really hope that WATCHMEN does tremendous business. I really do. The reason is that I just can not fathom a return to shit Comic Book movie adaptations of years past. The success of films like IRON MAN and DARK KNIGHT are clear indicators that adapting the material with love and affection and intellect and vision... that it's the way to go. That's what I saw on screen for WATCHMEN and I hope it becomes a phenomenon. Cuz Warners intends to continue mining comic gold. We'll get JONAH HEX on August 6th 2010. Then in the Holiday season, the Emerald Knight will be charging his ring and projecting on screens on December 17th in GREEN LANTERN.

God that'd be cool. I want GREEN LANTERN to be something that we've yet to still see. It needs to be ambitious as hell, on a truly stunning scale. And it needs to be smart. Can't believe this stuff is coming about. JONAH HEX. Just crazy man!

    by lostbat

I mean I am interested, the geeks are interested. But is 90% of the moviegoers interested in this? To put these characters already on the big screen in 2010 next to all the a-listed comic movies could be the beginning of the end of comic movies. I don't think they going to make money with this.

If they make a suitably epic looking action/sci-fi film out of GL, people will watch it.

Most films aren't based on preexisting characters you know.

Unless this competes head to head against Iron Man 2 theres no ways its going to bomb...

    GL can go wrong easily???

    by the founder

GL can certainly turn out cool, but it's also a concept that can easily come across cheesy. WB really has to put a good creative team foward and a 100 million budget at least(if that's even a lot anymore because we are dealing with a really fx heavy concept foe a film. I don't know. WB did good with the Batman films and I think they should put forth the sane quality for a GL film.

    Best Storyline

    by citizenwhig

GL Movie should not start with his orgin. That's two played out and conventional. The movie should begin with GL returning to his asteroid home, after a mission for the GL corps. It should be set during the period when Hal Jordan was exiled from earth by the Guardians. He was unhappy, rebellious against the Corps and struggling to come up with a reason to remain a GL. The story should end with Jordan solving the moving crisis, realizing the importance of GL service . . . and then promptly resigning his GL commission to return to earth with Carol Ferris. This will set up a sequel to introduce John Stewart and a conflict when Jordan wishes to return to the Corps. Hollywood should be this smart.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Should be in the running for hal jordan and i've only read a handful of GL comics...

That being said even i know whomever is playing the role needs to have the right build, the acting ability to accept the fantastical elements of the DC universe yet still be noble enough to do their lines properly and with gravity..., and they have to beleivable when kicking ass, even if half the action is the ring.

in short please don't hire ryan gosling, pick someone slightly older and make them look younger, shit joan rivers is like 130 and she's still able to fix her face; do your magic hollywood!

Just like the captain america movie, the actor needs some sort of on-screen weight.

Worrying about the movie we really need to be perfect. This tremendous force we know as captain America. That movie needs to be the best comic book movie because he is the staple of marvel universe. If cap is bad then everything else will live in that shadow. It has to be striclty old school Gritty WWII ending with cap getting frozen and it's gotta be done rght... That means bucky has to make an appearence too. It has to be 100% serious and has to be an over the top picture of how cap feel about America. Should be borderline R rating so they can really show how crazy ted skull Is. Didn't the shield Give you goose bumps in iron man? That's because you know it has to be a serious movie.

    by themark

Not the best casting suggestion i've heard all day...love the guy, but think he's more suited to the dashing rogue type...which I always kinda got the 'reluctant hero' vibe from Hal Jordan. I know someone said he'd be a good Wally West, but I don't even know about that. I think you need some goofy bastard for that--the talk of Ryan Reynolds years ago sounded pretty spot-on. Anyway, I'll second that Ryan Gosling decision...mostly because he's an actor that'll bring a little 'weight,' as it were, to this project.

He was a fighter test pilot, one of those guys with "The Right Stuff." Sure, he walked away from the Corp. at times, but Ackles' Lee Adama did the same thing on BSG. Ackles is an excellent choice, his personality fits very well with Jordan's- plus he's an ACTOR- he can make adjustments to this project.

    GL thoughts

    by parallaxmjm

So many things to comment on, being a big GL fan. The GL script is good, at least the 1st draft and I doubt the quality has changed towards the negative since the original writers did the re-writes. The GL in the script is Hal Jordan. Alan Scott did have a role originally at least, but can't say that wasn't written out in the rewrite. And there wasn't a gay GL. I can only guess that poster confused Kyle with his assistant, who was gay.

Bale is early 30s and that is the ideal age for Batman, plus he spends most of his time in a suit, so age isn't as important. Hal in the script is around 28ish, so you need someone who looks that age or maybe a bit younger if you really want to start a franchise. Fillion is too old, as is David Boreanaz.

JUMPING OFF POINT FOR GREEN LANTERN:

    by halsolo

You can pretty much start with the DC SHOWCASE PRESENTS: GREEN LANTERN (vol.1) which is cheap and the early silver age adventures. Then read the Neal Adams/Dennis O'Neil GREEN ARROW/LANTERN stories. I really love ALAN MOORE's TALES OF THE GREEN LANTERNS, which are all collected in the DC STORIES OF ALAN MOORE trade paperback - you need to be up on these at least to really get the new run of GREEN LANTERN by Geoff Johns - GREEN LANTERN:NO FEAR, WANTED:HAL JORDAN, REVENGE OF THE GREEN LANTERNS, THE SINESTRO CORPS WARS Vol. 1 & 2 and last SECRET ORIGINS - this run is fantastic, and will pretty much get you up to speed on everything inbetween of worth. Johns takes even the goofiest stuff from the early Silver Age adventures and puts it into a great sci-fi adventure context that works - like STAR SAPPHIRE. Read these, love em.

Green Lantern needs a huge budget

    by rufferto

I know it's not the thing that is essential in a good film. What I mean Is a lot of it should take place in space not Earth. I just feel this is a movie that should have lots of different aliens showing the corp as Jedi like. Hal should meet a lot of the most important of these guys. Sinestro was after all a lantern once praised for having the cleanest sector and doing it by being a fascist. They really didn't do much with that guy in the animated series shows or touch on his origin. Kind of sad.

yeah, that's right, make joey hal jordan. If you really think about it, you could make a solid argument that matt leblanc was the best actor on FRIENDS. Just because he played an uneducated, womanizing idiot (but a different kind of idiot) doesn't mean the guy can't act. I watch that show and i see jennifer aniston, courtny cox, david schwimmer, matt perry, but i don't see matt leblanc--i see joey. He's a solid actor to say the least, but i truly believe he would jump at the opportunity to do green lantern and he'd be a damn good hal jordan.

    by wixmmm

in order for green lantern to be a sucess, they will have to make all the aliens humanoid. I love the comics, but there are some really dumb and weird looking aliens that would look stupid on the big screen. Little blue gaurdians would be fine, and humanoids with different skin colors would be fine, but no weird alien looking aliens please. I gauruntee it will turn off the average movie goer. Its what turned me away from farscape... i really tried watching it, but i couldn't get through the first season, because the stupid looking aliens just turned me away.

    GL Discussions

    by lang the cat

My son and I were just talking about doing a GL film. First, who to choose? Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner are the best choices (though I did think Common as John Stewart was cool). Now Hal IS GL, but Kyle is the artist and far more inventive in how he uses his ring. Guy Gardner? No way, he is just comic relief and the only way he would get chosen would be if he was only up against Gnort.
Now if you go with Hal, you need to focus on the Space Cop, GL Corps. aspect. Probably the best story line would be to use Abin Sur's son as a criminal kinpin and Sinestro as a dirty Green Lantern. Forget the "yellow flaw", unless you are going to wipe the GL Corps in the sequel to bring in Kyle. Sinestro is the best villian to use for opening GL film as he best defines how wrong Jordan could go. Especially as Sinestro was his mentor.
Having Sinestro (and others who follow his fascist style) go off and find yellow rings and begin the Sinestro War would be a place to leave off for a sequel.
If you bring in Kyle, then you bring him in to rebuild a lost Corps and fight the Manhunters.

Casting? Hal Jordan is an experienced pilot and reckless. Fillon is the right age, possibly Brendan Fraser (for looks, but he can act, if rarely), Sean Patrick Leonard might also do well. Maybe Dennis Quaid
For Kyle, I would like Joseph Gordon Levitt.
John Stewart, Common, Dennis Haysbert are both good choices, someone with gravitas.
Guy Gardner? For some reason I think of Ben Stiller, Seann William Scott, or even Tim Robbins. Someone who could play a person totally impervious to rational thought.

I think a short at the beginning with Gnort (played by Jack Black) might be good.

Not really a big fan of Green Lantern. For some reason, it just does not click with me. I'd like to see a movie for THE FLASH done right. I'm surprised they haven't tried it yet. green lantern pwns flash

    by wixmmm

(has pwn gone the way of wazzaaap???) I am in favor of the yellow weakness because then they can turn hal into parallax (which would be an AWESOME ending to the first--the average viewer will not see it coming and no superhero movie has a better hero turned villain. Then you can bring in kyle for the second movie (possibly introducing him in the first movie) and have hal the villain, and then they can go with the rebirth plot and the awesome revelation that the yellow weakness is parallax living in the central power battery. Then it gets awesome because the third film would play off the 'fear is the only weakness' flaw of the ring, which sets up all sorts of awesome potential situations. What would be cool to even the tables for the second movie would be let kyle become ion so he can give parallax hal a run for his money. I like the artist angle and i think kyle had the best romantic subplots that you read in any comic, if you don't count lois and clark. But geoff johns who can do no wrong did have a great run on flash, though.

laugh at leblanc all you want. it is a rediculous suggestion. But green lantern is a superhero movie, and what Dark Knight had going for it was it's 'believability.' Green lantern is not star wars. I LOVE the comics, but those aliens are fucking weird looking. I have read every green lantern issue after Emerald Dawn, and I love the character. But people (or studios) will want an earth based lantern, and if its a huge success, maybe they can go with a space storyline later... Thinking more about it, i think the weird aliens might actually work for a second movie, if the first one does really well, then audiences would probably accept the aliens.

This should be very Star Wars-y (in scope and tone). Set 50/50 in space/on Earth. If anything, more off Earth. Many different (non-humanoid) life forms are GLs. I wouldn't mind an origin story. It would be a great idea IMHO to have the 2nd movie end with a new GL taking over (if they get that far - God willing).

    by jdanielp

.....is when GREEN LANTERN recharges his ring...and some people (cough, Juemad, cough)...will be reacting with "What the fcUk is this $H!T pOetrY dOin' in my GREEN LANTERN mOvie?!" Hahahahahahahahahahaha...

IN BRIGHTEST DAY, IN DARKEST NIGHT, >NO EVIL SHALL ESCAPE MY SIGHT! LET THOSE WHO WORSHIP EVIL'S MIGHT, BEWARE MY POWER, GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT! And yes, if you memorize that, you are a certified geek! (Welcome to the club, Juemad!)

    Harry as Mogo...

    by kid z

...hey, that ws MY idea a few months back! Now that I think about it, HArry looks more like Ego, The Living Planet from the Marvel Comics universe. Maybe if he shaves his beard and head and wears a white t-shirt with a Lantern logo and a single big green stripe he could "pull it off". Although I'm sure Alan Moore will still disavow all credit anyway.
