CW Renews SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL, 90210, GOSSIP GIRL, ONE TREE HILL and TOP MODEL For 2009-2010!!

Published at:  Feb 24, 2009 8:54:28 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

TV Week reports the CW is about to announce early 2009-2010 renewals to six series: “Smallville,” “Supernatural,” “90210,” “Gossip Girl,” “One Tree Hill” and “America’s Next Top Model.”

32-year-old Tom Welling may have to buy a bigger house to store all the money he’ll be paid to play Superboy another year.

"Top Model," which has long been open only to contestants taller than 5'7", is mounting a petite-and-juniors season open only to contestants shorter than 5'7".

Series perched on the fate-unknown “bubble” include “Reaper,” “Privileged,” “The Game” and “Everybody Hates Chris.”

I actually enjoy a lot of those shows, 90210 and Gossip Girl are both guilty pleasures. Although I'd deny all knowledge of them without the pseudo-anonymity of the internet...

Supernatural is still a great show and I hope they also renew Reaper if its second season is as fun as the first (although it's not as good as Chuck IMHO).

As for Smallville, I think it's already about 4 seasons past its cancellation date. I still watch every week, but it's more out of habit than anything I think. The show is almost unrecognisable now, although I loved the nods to the first season in the most recent episode. I'm not keen on how they've resolved the Lana storyline to (presumably) fit with the established continuity of Clark/Lois.

It keeps getting worse, week after week. They spend the first half of the season slowly working towards the Lois and Clark pairing just to bring Kreuk back and unnecessarily rekindle their on again off again romance for like the tenth damn time? Ugh. If they must continue on with this shit, for the love of god, please cut back on redundant pep talks involving Clark's destiny. Quit focusing on that shit, get rid of Chloe, andything related to Lex, Green Arrow, bring back Perry White and make this show fun again. It's been far too serious for far too long, and without Glover or Rosenbaum to hold it down, it's become mind-numbingly boring.

Smallville actually at its best this season

    by jacksparasites

I've watched Smallville since the beginning, though I missed huge chunks of a few of the middle seasons of the show. I always hated 90% of the writing. But I have to say that the second half of last season and this season, it's like a completely different show. It's actually, dare I say, good. Everything from the death of Lionel Luther on has been pretty solid and this season actually feels like classic Superman with Clark and Lois working at the Planet with Jimmy and with the whole "Red-Blue Blur" as sort of a precursor to the Superman identity. I love how the Clark/Lois relationship is handled in the show and I thought they did a great job with Lana's brief return the way they transformed her from annoying victim to badass, and how they officially closed the door on that relationship. Good stuff. Plus I like the increasing use of other DC characters like Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter and the introduction of Toy Man and a Doomsday that's actually interesting. And they've done well with having Lex off camera while turning Mercy into a very complex and interesting stand-in.

Sidenote, I'm also bummed The Middleman got cancelled. It was so underrated.

Smallville's renewal is a nod to all the

    by rsanta74

fan service they've been doling out all Season 8. The Legion, more Braniac, Doomsday, the upcoming Zatanna episode, etc.. Apart from the aforementioned lack of flying, this season has put the show back on the fanboy map.

Changing the name isn't an option, unfortunately. In the past, some shows have done that to reflect distinct changes in direction. Unfortunately, the average viewer is an easily confused idiot. They assume that their fave had been canceled and simply don't tune into the retitled version. Smallville, like it or not, will remain as such until the day it is canceled.

My only concern with Season 9 is the continued involvement of Sam Witwer (Doomsday). The only way I can see this working is if they limit his commitment as they did with Lana. Give him a small arc, enough to wrap up his stint on the show, but in a continuity friendly open ended way.

An NO, they'll never get rid of Chloe. She's still a fan fave and tiny alternative to Lois the amazing blowup doll. Also, DC will probably want to keep her in the fan eye long enough to properly introduce her in the comics. They've had difficulty with her comic intro in the past, even going as far as soliciting an issue which got pulled nearly at the last minute. I don't think that they'll stop trying. Keeping Alison Mack on the show will keep up interests, as they'd want to make use of that option.

For me, the show is headed in 1 of 3 directions.

DIRECTION 1: More of the same old shit. Probably, but less likely now that Loeb got kicked to the curb. They've been trying hard to maintain the series tone, but pushing ever more into the comic territory more - budget permitted.

DIRECTION 2: Turning him into Superman proper. NEVER gonna happen, at least not in the tights or with the name. They're trying hard not mess with WB's possible big screen reboot or a JLA. If both of those options are dead... Maybe. They've certainly laid enough groundwork with his dual ID, red/blue blur, setting in Metropolis, & blossoming connections to the bigger superhuman community.

DIRECTION 3: Lois & Clark v2.0 - minus the cape. Romantic tension. More wacky fan fave baddies. More Metropolis based antics. Less farm. This is much more likely. It's already half there. With Lana out of the way and Tess Mercer probably out the door by season's end, we'll probably see Perry take the head honcho desk at the DP. They've already got Jimmy in place. There's not much left to making this Lois & Clark v2 other than ditching the farm setting for a Metropolis apt, which they probably won't do until near the end of the series though. There's almost no reason to be back in Smallville now, actually. The coffee house set is pretty much abandoned. Lana's gone. Lex is gone. Ma Kent is gone. Supergirl flew the coop. Even his dog is MIA.

My only gripes with Season 8 were: 1) The episode scheduling. That killed the momentum of certain stories at times. AND 2) The waaay quick retcon of Chloe's Krypto amnesia and return to her being his Krypto Hag. Either option was okay. The quick flip flop was not.

The way I see it, the show jumped the shark (officially) when they whored themselves spectacularly for Stride Gum. Anything better than that low point is a plus. The consistent improvement this season over that Elasti-Pete episode is enough reason not to cancel it so quickly. They haven't whored themselves out as badly since and should be patted on the backs.

    Smallville and Supernatural

    by arkillo

I've watched every episode of Smallville since the beginning, even the really painful ones, mainly because I'm a whore for anything based on DC or Marvel characters. Having said that this season is the best Smallville has ever been. The writing is sharp, the acting quality is above and beyond every other season, and we get a new DC character introduced nearly every week. I'm having a great time with the show and if Season 9 continues the trend of Season 8 then I'm all in.

As for Supernatural, I'm elated it's coming back for it's 5th season, but as every fan of Supernatural knows the plan has always been for the 5th season to also be the last. The shows creator planned the series w/ a beginning, middle, and end and the conclusion of S5 really will be "the end" sadly.

Looks like they'll make him fly at least. I think the "no tights, no flights" rule went out the door with Gough & Millar. Cos, y'know, they said there would only be eight seasons too. Which I thought to be the reason they were nudging Clark closer to being Superman this current season. A season which - with the Lana power suit bullshit aside - has been pretty good so far.

    by cineninja

...they knew they were going to be renewed and thats why they backed off of the Lois/Clark budding romance. That would have been resolved THIS season and now they have set themselves up to stretch it out through NEXT season.
I do believe however its time to break out the suit and stop fucking around. I also would not be opposed to Welling playing Supes in the next theatrical incarnation.
Superman Returns was nothing more then a rehashed nod to the Reeve movies and left me flat.
Another plus with taking the Smallville mythos to the Big Screen is not having to rehash with yet another origin story.

Bitch came back after finishing that shitty Street Fighter flick, killing whatever progress they had made with Lois and Clark, discovered Lex was developing a "power suit", gained control of the power suit herself, and because of that Lex rigged a krypto-bomb on the roof of the Daily Planet, she defused it, but absorbed the krypto-energy, and now can't come within distance of Clark. I'm sure Kreuk will return, but right now, it looks like their relationship is finally over. (They should've left her dead in episode 100) Also, Clark got some nookie out it, which doesn't really make much sense.

Except for Lana's return, "Smallville" has been great this season. (I haven't been able to stand Lana for years now and was glad when she left.) It feels like a new show w/o Lex & Lana and w/ Clark finally working at the DP. It's no surprise that The CW would renew these shows, though. Don't SV & SN both get waaay more viewers than their beloved OTH, GG & "90210"? I'm hoping SN will go for 6 seasons instead of just 5. I enjoy that show too much.
