Whaaa... Eternal Sunshine of A Green Hornet's Mind?!?

Published at:  Feb 24, 2009 6:32:58 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I know you were as bummed as I was when Stephen Chow dropped out of the director's seat (and there's no mention of him participating as Kato in Variety's new piece today), but they've moved in a fascinating choice for helmer.

One Mr. Michel Gondry now looks to be directing GREEN HORNET, starring Seth Rogen and scripted by Evan Goldberg. That's definitely good news. I think the focus of BE KIND REWIND wasn't in the right place (the Sweding, to be specific), but I loved both SCIENCE OF SLEEP and ETERNAL SUNSHINE and, even more relevant, I loved his episode of FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS this season. He did the one where Jermaine falls in love with an Australian and it's just as doomed and forbidden a love as Romeo & Juliet. Easily the funniest episode of the season.

Anyway, that's the news. I think it bodes well and I'm really curious to see what the familiar pairing of Goldberg and Rogen brings to this particular material. I didn't grow up on the show like a lot of people did, but the iconography has stuck with me. What are your thoughts?

This is what I get for just acting upon reading, instead of checking my own site first. Here's my take from the double post:

Hey folks, Harry here and GREEN HORNET officially just jumped the rails and is in territory where I can't conceive of what this movie is going to be now. But I'm excited, terrified, intrigued, filled with trepidation and curiosity. Brilliant & sometime erratic director Michel Gondry is directing Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow in THE GREEN HORNET according to Variety. I have no earthly idea what the resulting film is going to be. Not a single moment. What is this film now? I really haven't a clue.

    Love Be Kind Rewind

    by thepilgrim

I can't Praise It Enough. Whole lotta hating going on over at IMDB for it. Me I just don't get it. Michel Gondry is a very experimental filmmaker. some of his films may feel off becuase of this. I call it looking at something new syndrom. You don't know how to judge it because it doesn't have a former style to compare it too. So even when you think this is wierd ,it makes no sense, wheres the logic, it's happening in our world but it's not obeying the rules all the time. So alot of people get up in arms about that. I mean Sweding is it's own thing even outside of the movie now. Focus on it or not. I think that really proves that this guy is very original and cool as hell.

was great; perhaps one of the best episodes of the entire series. Funny You should mention that Quint, since that is the first time this horrible source for "cool news" has put it to print. by a goonie

I just recently saw The Science of Sleep and absolutely loved the shit out of it. Great, beautiful, funny, sweet movie. Gondry knocked that one right out of the park.I'm also a big fan of Eternal Sunshine, so I quite like Gondry as a director. The dream of a Stephen Chow-directed, Rogen-Goldberg-scripted flick has now faded into the background, but at least this news puts the movie back on track, headed in an interesting direction. I mean, can you imagine if they announced that Brett Ratner was now going to helm this thing? No Chow completely sucks, but Gondry puts a smile on my face, too, so that's a very good thing in my book.

Because honestly I hated the stupid 'save the store' plot and I hated Danny Glover. There should've been more sweding and there should've been a better story to fill it in. Just felt like an amazing concept stuck in a mediocre episode of 'Hey Arnold' with Danny Glover lisping like a strokee and being grumpy.

    Is Rogen an actor?

    by darth macchio

I saw him doing half-assed stand-up routines and just talking with friends without looking at the camera but my presumption is that GH would require actual dramatic acting skills of which Rogen has shown zero ability. He's definitely a great writer and can act in very specific roles but putting Rogen in the role of even a semi-serious superhero flick is like putting cheech or chong in a Woody Allen film and expecting subtle stoner satire. Both might be good on their own but just do not mix together.

I did mean the focus should have been on the Sweding of the movies, the comedy and pure joy of film as an artform. I understand what Gondry was going for with the community gathering around the video store, but that was much less interesting to me than watching film lovers interpreting classic films and finding creative ways to mimic them.

The Rocketeer Is The Best Super Hero Movie Ever Made!!!

    by media messiah

Truly a great film with no low points or lost opportunities, the Rocketeer soars where many other super hero films fail to even take-off. Superman had many great beats but save for its bookendings...and the "Can you read my mind" flying sequence, much of the movie was hurt by the cheesy and campy Lex Luthor sequences. As it stands, The Rocketeer is a film without equal. It is truly the best super hero film ever made.

Haven't seen it yet but I can't imagine it'd be too hard to make considering how unfunny the rest of the season has been. Seriously, watch season 1 again and then do the first few eps of this season. Last season FOTC made it look easy to produce a musical-comedy tv show. This season, it's like they're trying very hard to get half the results. I heard somewhere that they had no plans to do a second season but got offered one and decided to do it anyway (hey, I would). *sigh*
