WATCHMEN reviews are popping up all over the net - but I'm gagged. :(

Published at:  Feb 25, 2009 12:48:49 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here... we American reviewers seem to be under an embargo. Now, some are being cute and publishing "Non-Review" of the film like Devin's Non-Review at CHUD but then you have a site like EMPIRE publishing their review. Then you have IMDB running their User Comments. There's also the guys at CineFools! And again here at DEN OF GEEK! Then there is this one from Total Film! Now we have THE TIMES from the UK chiming in. Then there's a negative review at News of the World that is pretty much the exact opposite of my thoughts, with the exception of the opening.

I've written my mostly love letter to WATCHMEN, but I am obeying the gag order. So far. It does seem fairly ridiculous that they're enforcing a review ban on such a high octane geek flick, as all it does is create fears. The audiences last night were mostly wildly enthusiastic with extremely loud applause in both theaters at the end and strong positive reactions throughout. Not everyone was pleased, but I'll get more into that with my piece as you'll see - hopefully soon enough.

Overall though, I feel most of fandom is going to come away extremely pleased, with the Watchmen fundamentalists probably being a bit chafed - and still others raging because... well that's their default setting on most comic adaptations.

Personally, I can't wait to see it again next Monday, and then again... many times in theaters Imax and otherwise. Here's a review from the London World Premiere:

Hi,

I was lucky enough to be afforded a ticket to the world premiere of Watchmen in London last night, thought I'd send in a quick review as I can't seem to find one anywhere else!

Right, bear in mind this is going to be quick as it's midnight now and it's been a damn long day.

First off, the film is stunning - to look at and to listen to. Zack Snyder has outdone himself with look - absolutely beautiful. The soundtrack is phenominal - this is demonstarted with a beautiful opening montage set to Dylan's times are a changing, and carried right through to 'Hallelujiah' blaring out when Silk Spectre and Night Owl get it together in Archie. Some of the songs run the risk of feeling a little out of place sometimes...like a random sequence involving '99 red baloons' that booms when silk spectre meets night owl for dinner...but for the most part they are effective in setting the tone and the period of the film, and besdies, most of them are just fucking good songs that sound even better when married up with beautiful visuals...even if as I say, they can seem a little random

I read the graphic novel last year for the first time, and I deliberately stopped short of the ending so as to allow myself the oppertunity to enjoy the film without comparing every damn frame to the book. So, with this in mind I can't comment on the whole 'squid' debacle, and whether the film is better to have left it out. I did keep my eyes peeled for any reference to a 's.q.u.i.d'- type inference to the 'doomsday device' that I've read could be mentioned, but if there was one I certainly didn't see it. To be honest though, every frame is crammed with so much visualy arresting information that it's damn near impossible to notice all on a first viewing.

Without droning on about performances, they're all good - with Rorshach being one hell of an exception...he's incredible. Seriously, that guy absolutely nails it, from the moment his masked is ripped off, to when he flushes the dwarf down the toilet...I hate to say it but the guy gives Ledger a run for his money in terms of pulling of the 'psycho with a point' thing.

The film is utterly uncompromising in terms of the ridiculously adult content it deals with - Rape, brutal murder, child abuse...you know when your watching a film where you see dogs chewing on the carcass of a brutally murdered six-year old girl that your watching a film that hasn't hidden from the darkest aspects of it's subject matter...you can see Snyder knows this is his one shot to get it absolutely right, a sequel is not going to happen - there will be no room to expand upon themes, or up the ante on action ever again...so he just goes for it. You can almost hear him saying 'fuck it, why not? it's in the book, so it's in here'...and that is something to be applauded.

Why on earth there was such a legal battle over this thing I have no idea...I could be completely wrong (and indeed I probably am) but if I were a fox executive I'd be clapping my hands with glee that I didn't pool a load of money in to it...it seems utterly unmarketable. An 18-rated superhero film littered with some of the most grizzly aspects of the human psyche, a three hour running time...nothing for girls (I'm not talking about cool, intelligent film buff/pop culture/geeky girls...I mean the girls that booked to see 'Confessions of a Shopaholic'...girls en mass - there were two couples in front of me who left fairly early on...you could see them fidgeting restlessly, constantly bending their boyfriend's ear before eventually the guys just had to give up and head to the nearest sing-a-long showing of Mamma Mia!), and a swinging blue cock make the whole thing utterly bewildering to people who are not prepared for what they're getting in for.

Anyway, as a film it's great, not perfect, but I'm sure all the fanboys will be in heaven. Dr Manhatten's origin sequence/monologue/escape to mars is wonderfully executed, and left me with actually quite moved...especially when the music stops, and all you here is Crudup's voice...alone against a wall of silence, before building his 'fortress of solitude' on the red planet.

I could go on, but I'm knackered. Apologies for the horrendous spelling, I'm typing this out as quick as I can and can't be bothered to spell check.

One major gripe...it's just so damn long...but, to tell this story right, that's precisely what's needed, so I guess it's a Catch 22 situation.

Hope this provides some interesting reading!

If you use this, call me Carousel.

Personally, it wasn't long enough. I can't wait to share my review with all of you!

I'm just here to report that this morning the Professional Clerics of Bale cracked 10,000 posts on Node39976. And seeing how the mods locked the thread on Friday, subtracted 700 posts, and then restarted it, I'm confident we have well over 12,000 posts (thus beating the Lostback) and we are now the longest, most powerful thread of all time. Let all amateurs know that we own the record on behalf of Christian Bale.

It's from the guy who made 300, filmed in the same style like 300, with the same "Oh my god, this is so great because it totally looks like the comic"-reviews like 300. It can be the greatest movie ever and if it is I will of course admit that I'm wrong, but for now excuse me for having some pretty bad flashbacks about the disaster that was 300.

News does not exist in this dojo

    by cobra--kai

"Remember us." As simple an order as a professional can give.
"Remember why we typed." For we did not wish tribute, nor song (though the Bale Remix rocks), nor monuments nor poems of war and valour. Our wish was simple. "Remember us," they said to all the other talkbacks. That was our hope, should any free professional come across that place, in all the countless talkback threads yet to be.
May all our posts whisper to you from the screens, "Go tell the Professionals, passerby, that here by Bale's law, we typed. Ah-da-da-dah, like this with our keyboards, in the hope of wiping that Lost record from the face of the earth"
In other news - AICN the bastion of scoops, spies, and guerilla tactics dutifully obeys an embargo, which has already been made a mockery of by Empire Magazine and other members of the establishment.

When a film is ambitious is is ALWAYS to be applauded. (Even if the result is a bit turdy.) And this sounds very ambitious and not turdy at all. If this is as rich as it sounds - wow. by fuck the napkin

Really enjoyed it. The main disappointment is that they chickened out of having a brutal, shocking ending. Shots of corpses piled in the streets would really have helped give the finale some more impact, especially after some hardcore violence and gore were used through the rest of the movie to give the audience a slap-in-the-face reminder that this is more serious than other comic movies. It would really have helped to push the ending further away from being a standard comicbook villain plot and make people really think about the consequences and morals of the grand plan.

Its a decent script from great source material. A fine cast. And a really, really shitty director. You've essentially got a guy whose not even cut out for TV commercials helming a very good production, and he makes it by the skin of his teeth. Look at the fucking awful Bill and Tedesque cutaway's to the same group of people in a fake looking bar watching TV, or their counterparts, some ugly british family on a fake looking couch, watching the tele. If the Wachkowskis themselves, or someone with a little...vision?...had put it together, it would probably have been a home run.

    by the brain machine

Wow. As a fan of the GN, I will say it was pretty much everything I could have wanted. The actors were pitch perfect, the visuals were amazing, the story rolls along at an amazing pace. For a nearly 3 hour movie, I never felt like it was too long, in fact once we get to the point where you know it's all coming to an end, I was sad that it wouldn't be going on a bit longer.

This from someone who waited in a line o' geeks for 6 hours. I wanted more when it was over, and I'll be seeing it again when it hits IMAX.

Rorshach is indeed perfectly cast. His scene being introduced to the general population in prison is absolutely amazing and truly frightening.

There are a couple songs that I thought were not perfect in their placement - the use of All Along the Watch Tower just didn't work for me - but I suppose that might just be me. It will be interesting to see what y'all think of some of the song placement when you get to see this chunk of awesome next week. Of course, this is a pretty minor gripe when you look at the whole.

As far as the squid goes, I can see why some people are upset that it has been changed - I mean if everything else is so close to the GN, why change that aspect? But the choice works, and I believe it was a concession that will allow newBs to grasp the story concept easier. I know... fuck 'em, right? But the fact that the basic ending remains intact is a testament to the resolve of Zach Snyder and the producers. The flick kicks ass from the opening frame, and I think that most everyone that is a fan of the GN will find a LOT to like with this adaptation.

After reading about how many different possibilities of crap this property has been near over the years, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that it was made with so much care and respect that it deserved.

However, I think WB might be in a little trouble. Yes it's going to make a killing durring the first couple weeks, but I don't know if it's going to have the crossover power that TDK did. This is a brutal flick that isn't for kids, and is pretty damn terrifying at times. While that is exactly what the fans want, I don't know if it's going to be the mainstream jugernaut that TDK was. Female geeks will love it... girly girls will not.

I can't wait to see what you all think next week. And I can not wait for the extended edition! Wouldn't it be cool if it does well enough to get that print screened in the theater! Bring it ON WB!

    Amateur.

As for WATCHMEN - if ever there was a movie NOT to half-ass, this was it. The ending doesn't make sense. Sure I'll see it and give it the benefit of the doubt - but I'm certain the Comedian won't be given a good reason to freak out about the shitty Manhattan frame job ending the way he would've about the Squid ending. But then, this is just pretty-pretty stuff for the eyes, not a serious go at transferring the themes of the GN. Zack does a great job with visuals - but he does NOT understand fuck-all about the overall themes of the movie. So you end up with a shit ending instead of the original.

It's not a marketable film, so won't do major box-office. And that teaches suits and studios just one thing : "We need to fuck with the source material, cut corners, put a big name as the star, and make a lot of money"

And that's a shame. Ang Lee's Hulk may have been a 200 million dollar art house movie, but it also sucked. Watchmen could be a 200 million dollar masterpiece, made for an audience of thousands, not millions.

Actually the Harry Knowles that started this site has the same rules as I do. If the studios actually willingly show me their movie, I'll play by their rules unless otherwise discussed... if I see the movie through my own nefarious means, all bets are off. That's been the standard from the beginning. Only in the beginning, they almost never cooperated, but that's why my reviews were usually the week of, via some promotional screening.

She's not quite a geek yet. She's getting there. She aspires to the geek label, but she actually crushes on geeks more than she is one. She has the things she geeks on, but they're not at all the standard things. For her, the greatest comic creator of all time is Mitch Clem. She has much to learn, especially if she's to have a hand raising our children. Giggle.

Seriously. Yeah, I don't think any superhero-based movie will ever approach TDK crossover-wise. People poured into the theater to see TDK due to Heath Ledger's performance, not because they give a fuck about Batman and the Joker. It was akin to rubbernecking at an awful car wreck. Bread and circuses. If it had been Robin Williams playing the Joker then the numbers surely wouldn't have been as spectacular.

Makes it 2 3/4 hours long, this, a comicbook movie, and then some daft merde-heads have a go at it. Shouldn't we rejoice that this has been made, whether it'll be our favourite film ever or not? by knowthyself

..SPOILER ALERT. Its used when OWL and SHACH are flying to Veidts winter wonderland. That chapter is titled "two riders were approaching." A lyric from the song. Its rather smart of Snyder to put the song right there. Referencing the chapter title and FOR ONCE taking that amazing song and finally putting it in a non-Vietnam war film. I think we need to see some of these songs through new eyes. They are very carefully placed and as far a HALLELUJAH during the sex scene..yes its meants to be kind of funny. I mean their suits just fixed his wang. I remember laughing about it in the comic. Lighten up a little.

    by fiester

No squid is a cop out. How cool would a colossal squid have been? Clueless audiences would have been like "What the fuck is going on?" and readers of the book would have been like, "Yes!" but in the end it would have been the right thing to do. They took a short term solution. I can only hope there is a director's cut that has the alternate original squid ending that will emerge at some point.

    by le vicious fishus

I still have reservations (chiefly about the change in the story's CLIMAX [yes, it IS the story's climax despite claims otherwise]). But I'm not unmovable here. And--even though I dearly love the source material--I'm not purist. If the film adaptation works, it works. Clearly it won't be perfect (or even close), but as of now I'm expecting to at least like and admire most of it. Sounds like we've seen the vast majority of the slo-mo effects already. Ironically, they seem to have been chiefly used for marketing purposes (for the masses that loved 300 I'd suspect). That's a relief.I wonder if someone in the know can set me at ease about what we've seen of the actresses in this film--particularly the apparently wooden Akerman (aka SS2). She's just *bad* in every clip I've seen.OTOH, sounds like Haley's knocked Rorschach out of the park. And that's excellent news.

The film even removed some useless subplots about the pieces of the gov't. What more did you want? They kept him in the mask. They kept him a terrorist. They kept the twists. I thought Ackerman was fine in it. She looks great and does a good job as Laurie. It's a comic movie and the dialogue isn't the most natural stuff in the world, so nobody in it is entirely life-like. I didn't buy the old Sally Jupiter though. Make-up wasn't great and she was too animated for a near-70s-year-old - reminded me of the old Lorraine in Biff's evil 1985 in Back To The Future 2. You remember with these... these... THINGS!

Matthew Goode's douchiness in his own words

    by drturing

"Will they see this slightly Germanic, which is one way we went with it to have a duality, will he be seen as we do when somebody who's German turns up in any film, is he going to be the baddie? I think that's what Alan Moore was sort of going at anyway, which is why we ended up giving him a sort of softish German, even though he's not meant to be. He's meant to be born in New York. We liked the idea because it played into the [idea that] he gave all his money away possibly because his parents could have been Nazis. It was just sort of fleshing that out and it made sense to me. It plays with the idea I suppose that isn't it funny that in a war situation, all Germans are considered guilty for what happened to the Jews, even though they're following a government. America seems to be very blameless about what happened to the Japanese when 1.5 million innocent people were wiped out from the bomb being dropped." "Well, that's another question, isn't it? It's suggested by Rorschach. "Possibly homosexual. Must investigate further." But then you can say that abuse leads to abuse so some people could say if they're psychologists that there's a possibility that Rorschach might be a homosexual. You never know, and that maybe he fancies Veidt."

The thing is, the comic was about anarchy. That being government vs no government. The movie was a fucking commentary on the Bush administration which would be all well and good, except that by the time it came out we'd had the first two Starwars prequels that covered pretty much the same ground. The whole thing felt like it was beating a dead horse.

dude, I'm not telling you to shut up. By all means discuss to your endless delight. I wasn't flaming anyone, only pointing out that to claim this film is the same, stylistically as 300 is wrong. 300 was a green screen film, drained of color and super saturated with other colors. This film wasn't shot that way at all, with the exception of Arctic exteriors and Mars. The vast majority of this film is location shooting. The film is very colorful, down to the palate used by Gibbons himself to a large large extent. That's me adding INFORMED via first hand watching of the film, to correct a fear that is in fact unfounded.

I'm pretty sure you've worked yourself up into hating the film, but I'm also hopeful that you'll give the movie a fair shot. And I absolutely look forward to your take on the material. My review is very specific about what I love (the majority), what I like and what I don't like - and how those fits into judging the film as an adaptation and as a its own work.

which was how I looked at your own film, which was an adaptation, which due to its stylistic choices would be hated by many along moral tangents, versus judging the film based on what you were working for and whether or not you accomplished that.

Films like FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and W left me cold (mostly because of their filmmakers), but V FOR VENDETTA worked well as Bush-era political commentary because England was used as a solid allegory for 21st century America. Re: V for Vendetta

    by agentarchangel

The graphic novel and the film are two different animals altogether, mostly because of the times they exist. The original novel was heavily influenced on the rise of Thatcher and the conservative way in world politics, and it has a much twistier story than the movie, which was inspired by Bush 43.

The movie distills the story down to a basic plot frame of the book, but a very enriched one. With all of the people and goings on from the book in tact, you'd really only be able to make a miniseries without confusing common moviegoers. (Especially with all the ministers involved in their own personal dramas, and the Chancellor wanting to actually screw the supercomputer.)

I'll admit, I read the book after the movie; but I thought both stood alone perfectly. One didn't override the other, one didn't trump the other, they both existed as good fiction in their own rights. Here's hoping that if Watchmen doesn't live up to adaptive expectations, it will at very least be a good effort and a great standalone piece.

so has snyder succeeded with the adaptation that so many filmmakers including gilliam and greengrass had to abandon?

the film is visually absolutely spellbinding throughout, the brutality - and snyder has point blank refused to trim anything to garner a 15 rating instead of an 18 - is vicious, visceral and extreme. the sound design is incredible.

the problem with the film is he has captured the visuals so brilliantly, and this is obviously a passion project, but something has been lost in translation from moore's original text. essentially the heart has been torn out and we forget to care on anything more than a superficial level about the characters and their predicaments. tellingly moore's name is conspicuous by its absence on the credits (again).

some of the cast nail the performances perfectly rorschach and the comedian are spot on examples and some fall flat. likewise some of the music cues are odd - and the choices don't always resonate with what's on screen.

from a genre fans perspective however this is an absolute must see and as i said it is visually one of the greatest films ever - but it could have been so much more. this will be a tough sell... at nearly 3 hours and with the extreme graphic violence and zero hollywood star recognition "who will watch the watchmen?"

    V's First Televised Speech

    by mr gorilla

'He says to viewers is they want to look for someone to blame for the current political situation, they need only look in the mirror.' That whole speech was fantastically relevant in our age of terror laws, extraordinary rendition etc. I don't know whether it was in the original GN or not. Also the idea that terrorists are MADE in those terror prisons, people become radicalised in them - that is relevant to our times, whether or not it was in the original. And it wasn't a lazy political commentary because the character of V was so great - I got so involved in the drama of it.

    I appologise...

    by the brain machine

For not remembering that All Along the Watchtower was used in the GN. BrainFart. Seemed an odd choice to me while watching the film. And it wasn't just that particular song, there are a couple other times when the songs that were chosen just seem to overpower the images a tad too much.

Again... these are minor things when viewing the whole, and I don't just want to hark on the few things that I didn't like as the good outweighed the bad by a longshot.

I think the coolest thing about the film is that, like the GN, multiple viewings are going to add to the experience. I know there are things I did not see the first time around, and I'm looking forward to the film growing on multiple viewings.

    by cotton mcknight

All the guy was saying was that it comes from the director of 300, it looks stylized, and he is hearing the same types of reviews that preceded 300. You know damn well that you would have the same reservations if you were in a similar situation. I would be reading "I don't know... I want to get excited about this project but.... I don't know. Hopefully (director's name here) can pull it off but... I don't know". As for me, I haven't read the book, so all I am going on is what I see in the commercials and the reviews I read. And the thing that stands out to me more than anything is the words "three hours". I honestly doubt I will see this in the theater for that reason alone. I was more interested in Benjamin Button and that kept me away. I'll wait for the dvd release.

However, I want to walk out saying, "That wasn't Moore's story, but it was a good story, told well." I am crossing my fingers - all of them. The acting will have to carry this for me. Fuck the action, fuck the effects, fuck the sound and music. If the primary actors can't carry this off, all of them, it's not going to work for me. Because "Watchmen" really is about people standing around talking.

Rorschach is not a psychopath. I've seen this pop up countless times when this character is referenced, and people who write for a living, like this guy at The Times, should know better. Of course Harry loved it

    by star hump

But I don't think that's a reason to rag on the guy. One of the great things about this site is Harry's unabashed PASSION for film and comics. I see him as an optimist. He's always looking for the good things, even in total junkers like "Attack of the Clones." There's a heart beating in there, and it's the heart of a kid. I mean that in a good way. Harry remembers what it was like BEFORE. And he's held on to that memory. We all should. You remember, you know, before we all got so goddamned jaundiced and cynical. That being said, it's still imperative that he calls out mistakes when he sees them. Listen, we have to hold these Hollywood studios' feet to the fire my brothers and sisters. As it's been said many times before, the best way to do that, is not to support movies you think are shit. Do not go see them. The dollar screams. Unfortunately, the studios know they have the geek dollar. They know that die hard geeks will go anyway. Hell, I smoked a joint, locked my keys in my '85 Bonneville and went to see motherfucking Daredevil. About the time Ben DyedRedHair Affleck and Elektra-Big-Brow Jennifer were playing footsies on the see-saw the pot wore off and I realized I was sitting through a giantic turd of a Daredevil film, AND my keys were locked in my car. It was a crushing moment. Then the film ended and I had to call a locksmith from the lobby of the theater. True story. Daredevil blew llama cock and I had no way home unless I paid a submental to come out and jimmy my shitbox. I was despondent. So vote with your dollars my fellow movie lovers, and let's remember how it was when were kids. Before.

WoW I never knew so many comic book geeks could have missed the whole point of the GN if they thought the ending was stupid. If the ending to the original GN was sutpid I doubt it could have ended up on Time's best list. I'll give the movie a shot but if the rumors are true and they changed the ending to what I heard then it's a failure. How could the movie ending be better? Cause it was dumbed down for the general retarded audience. I'm sick of shit being dumbed down so dumbfucks can understand what is going on. There's so much shit out their for your basic retard why compromise a fantastic ending like the one in the GN. by scottindc

I can understand some reservations about this film given Zack's history (not everyone liked 300..and yes, it was over-stylized). However, it's not unheard of for a director to transcend their own personal legacies and do something greater than they have before. I remember all the debate when Peter Jackson took on the LOTR films; and the cheesy gore and scatological messes that were Dead Alive and Meet the Feebles certainly added to that. Yet, somehow, he was able to pull it out and make 3 successful (and reasonably faithful) adaptions of the original work. Ron Howard, who did god-awful shit like 'Willow' and 'Far and Away' also did "Ransom", "Apollo 13", "Cinderella Man" and "Frost/Nixon". Long story short - I too am guilty of expecting this project to fail...but I'm going to go see it anyway and hope to be surprised.

HARRY IS WELCOME IN THE DOJO

    by arcadian del sol

Thank you for your comments regarding the Baleback. Please know that the intent was NEVER "lets break the site," and should such a thread ever develop again, know this in advance. We of the dojo are fans of this site first and foremost. That is why we are here. We are not, however, 'fanboys' of this site and will point out its failures as well as its successes. In both cases, we do so for the purposes of making it a better dojo for us all. Those who deny you entry into the dojo react with hearts instead of minds. We in the dojo strive to speak with both.
now get some sleep, and wake up ready to work on the next DVD feature, because God knows, it will be 3 weeks before we see it.

Something tells me Moore didn't mind the jabs at Bush. Whats wrong with having your film be relevant? Evey is your average drone thrust into V's startling reality of whats really going on around them. Her reawakening is the heart of the story. There is no love between her and V I dunno where you pulled that from and if we all don't take responsibility in regulating our gov't then what the fuck is the point of anything? Yes we are all V. Its the same message just made a little more obvious in the film. Having Evey put on the mask is the same exact message. She carries the mantle. Some people just don't want to like anything. I swear.

If only the Rorschach clip had been released initially... It's so ironic that they apparently released the shittier, 300-derivative clips to pull in the non-WATCHMEN/300 lovin' readers. They know avid WATCHMEN readers will see the fucker whether they're pissed off or not so much of the marketing has been geared towards everyone else. Blood and guts is not "adult".

    by stalin vs predator

This may still be a good film, but those comments make it look as if it's, once again, the case of that little boy mentality that Snyder clearly has (that's all that "300" was, after all).
As far as I can recall, that particular scene in "Watchmen" was quiet and understated, and therefore powerful - a shred of burned underwear, and the image of one bone that first seemed to be of unknown origin. If this guy is right and if the movie literally replaces that imagery with actual scene showing "dogs fighting over a bloody carcass of a child", then it's the American (and English) TV way: take it, make it loud, obnoxious, garish and overdone, then feed it to the masses, because they will love it.

When Eli Roth throws raw meat, ketchup and eyeballs on screen, when a teen TV star of the week splits a skull with a pickaxe in slow motion, that's not cinema for adults - that's a little boy's "cool" idea of cinema for adults. When Marlon Brando exclaims "Stella!", when Max von Sydow closes his eyes and prays silently - THAT is cinema for adults.

    by -halfscan-

Every review (positive and negative) that I've seen have said the exact same things...

The good: Looks pretty, sounds pretty, no holding back on blood & sex, fantastic opening segment, and good performances from Rorschach, Night Owl 2, Doc. Manhattan, and Comedian.

The Bad: soulless, style over substance, too much slow mo, depth of the GN stripped bare, final 30 minutes are anti-climactic and clumsy, and bad performances from Silk Spectre 2 and Ozzy.

Pretty much everything we could already gleam from the 9+ clips released over the last week.

if snyder reworked that scene to telegraph to the audience what happened, and make the scene grosser, it will have lost all the nuance and elegance that was in the book are movie audiences so dumb that they need to see dogs fighting over a carcass and not a bone? and its rorshach's slow realization of what has occured that has the impact in that entire scene i mean, zach already overdoes it by showing rorshach using the meat cleaver on the guy's head...its just not neccessary

    82% At Rotten Tomatoes

    by laserpants

Looks like the haters got pwned. They'll "hate" it anyway, of course, even on their umpteenth viewing of the film on opening weekend. They'll "hate" it more and more as the weekend progresses. Their "hate" directly proportional to the hater's body weight (obese), lifestyle (has none; lives in mom's basement), and sexually active status (eternally virginal, chronic masturbator). Of course, all of these haters will secretly love it, but will never admit it -- they are so wedded to their own misery that they are unable to enjoy ANYTHING without pretending to hate it. A desperately angry, lonely, and utterly joyless bunch of people. As for me, I cannot friggin' wait to see this movie. So far, most of the actual reviews I read are glowingly positive. Can! Not! by brians life

I can't fucking believe they changed the line in terms of who is speaking it and who it's spoken to. That line (to me) was the beautiful final moment of the book that I will always remember. It was the culmination of all that came before it.Having Laurie say it to her MOM!?!?!?The whole point is gone now....the idea was that Viedt was left uncertain. Yearning for approval from his intellectual equal only to be left with a vague unsatisfactory answer.FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!And I'm some one that is FINE with the changed ending...was bugged by the fact that they're called WATCHMEN..but got over it.THIS though, THIS really gets me.And Bacci, I never had any doubt that the average comic fan is smarter than the average movie goer. I'm with you there, man. Laurie was arguably the least likable, most doltish character in the comic. There's no way she would come up with that line, and even if she did, it becomes a throw away statement delivered by her. Now having the equivalent of a nigh-unto omniscient GOD delivering that line in response to an anxious Veidt wanting to be reassured that his mass murder was not in vain--THAT works.Bad choice.

In the other talk backs where early footage was shown and it was universally panned you were no where to be found, now a few positive reviews come in and you show up with a sense of new life. Since we have discussed my thoughts before, I will be brief. The ideal would have been to translate this to a mini series format on HBO. An episode for every book, directed by a host of talented directors, word for word, page for page from the book. Double J, Lynch and others would be great choices. As for our attack on the Immortal Kurt Lockwood, I find it laughable. He is without a doubt one of the best posters AiCN has ever seen, and has remained unbiased and open to debate to anyone. The fact you would show up now and attack him soldifies your place as a certified troll who looks for nothing more than conflict. If you wouldn't mind, please add your thoughts about the film or ideas being expressed, and avoid the personal attacks you have become famous for. I would say to you that I am impressed with the early reviews, however when I hear that Nite Owl's death scene has been cut I am even more amazed at the decision making that went into this project, how could you take that out?

he said, that because that line doesnt come closer to the end, and because one cant turn back the page, it would just end up being a throwaway of course, snyder also said that he changed the end, because it would take another 30 minutes of screen time to explain it....which he then changed to 15 minutes....which still misses the whole point...that its not the ending, its what led up to it...and the reader being marvelled at the complexity of this absurd plan, and understanding why the comedian said, "its all a joke" i hope viewers enjoy the movie...i hope it brings many more to read the source material...i hope it leads all the actors, snyder and all the support staff onto bigger and better things but im still not going to go see it

What's up? I have to disagree with your 'Snakes on a Plane' comparison. 1. This is a known commodity, with a director who has been releasing info on the flick since day one. SOAP was 'a funny idea, with a great genre actor in it'.2. The source material for this is well loved, and SOAP's source material was literally a title of a flick, and the desire for a badass actor to do his thing on a plane with some snakes.Anyone who has declared this flick to be great or awful before seeing it is doing a lot of guesswork, and probably lets their gut do most of the heavy lifting thought-wise. But I've tried to stay optimistic, and I'm a fan of the source material. I think your comparison is unfair to Snakes on a Plane, as well...since that was all buzz and no bee. This looks like the motherfuckin' HIVE to me. But I could be wrong.

Fair point bud. This is a more known commodity so not all of the debate is hype (some of it is based on people's strong feelings about the source material)...perhaps a better analogy would be my earlier comparison to the LOTR series (and the outcry that occurred when Peter Jackson was picked). Despite strong early reviews, a host of folks on theonering.net really raised a fuss - but were mostly placated by the finished product. I am just hoping this film is worth all the debate. Good point though....you're right - the SOAP comparison may be somewhat unfair.

I know. I know. But it's the "dumb it down" moves that I'm hearing about that are getting to me.Changing the name of the team to WATCHMEN and now giving Laurie the line that was meant for Manhattan.Fuck, man.And yeah, Bacci, that is a sorry excuse from Snyder. It has no power coming out of Laurie. It has NONE of the impact.

    The Dumbing Down of Watchmen

    by micturatingbenjamin

Man...Here's my analogy: Snyder is trying to set up the Senior Prom of Superhero Movies, the defining moment, a milestone, if you will.Snyder's problem here, I think, is that he's going to have to try and please the whole lunch room, not just his geek friends at the dork table. Not just his cool friends at the popular table. But he has to serve the interests of the faculty and staff, too! And, we're just walking by the gym, peeking in at sections of what he's doing, and whatever camp you fall in, you're going to see the glimpses we get in whatever light you feel is disconcerting. If you're a casual fan, you don't get why the things the geek fans are bitching about are so important. If you're a geek fan, you're protective of the things that make you an iconoclast, rather than the kid that smells like pickles and pencil shavings, and possibly B.O.. I get that, too.I hope he pulls it off.

    KnowThySelf...and "The Line" in general

    by brians life

I'm not typically a person who gets hung up on the little changes.Like I said, was FINE with the non-Squid ending. Still am.It's just that line...SPOKEN by Manhattan to Veidt. It was the justice. Here is Veidt. He pulls off his ultimate plan, and yet is still unsure of the justifications. He asks who he considers his equal for validation. Not only does he NOT get it, but he gets a vague platitude that he does not understand.it's also, in a way, the completion of Manhattan's arc. AND I thought the saying of the line would've made more sense in the wake of the Manhattan destruction that replaces the Squid. Now it's exactly what Snyder is claiming it would've been had he left it intact. It's throwaway.I've also got some personal connection to the line, it was that one line of dialogue that I knew I'd always remember.you know what I mean? When you're reading something and just a line BOOOM hits you. Stands out.And I also feel like ALOT of the dialogue in LOTR...well, it's convoluted and very easy to exchange. This line though, was Doc Manhattan's moment.

Micturating Benjamin...I agree with you but...

    by brians life

And I'm even hesitate to use the term "dumbing down" (i know i did) because I haven't seen the movie yet and i know it's NOT 2 1/2 hours of Transformers 'splosions and big tits. But when I see changes that could VERY easily have been avoided that serve seemingly no purpose other than "for the sake of change" it gets my ire up.Call me crazy.Calling the team "Watchmen" and this change in dialogue are the best examples I've come across. As far as making a "movie", which is wholly different from the medium he's adapting and had to please everyone...I understand that. And if you read my previous post you'll see that I champion that idea. I am FULLY behind the changed ending. But when I hear things like "we changed it to Watchmen because people wouldn't know why the movie was called that" or "we changed the line because it says 'end' in it and it wasn't close enough to the end" it makes me artistically shudder.

    by bacci40

i didnt like most of his changes...but i was just so happy to see an epic brought to the screen, i didnt care...except for his decision to remove the firing of the shire, which changed the entire homecoming of the hobbits...that was inexcusable and the line now does become a throwaway in the novel, veidt, who seemed so cocksure of himself, turns to god and asks....did i do the right thing that is not what your normal villian does take that away, alot of depth goes with it my god man, he changed rorshach warning veidt, to have dan do it, which removes one of the greatest lines in the book...with rorshach basically calling veidt a whore now that scene is important, because it sets up in the reader's mind, that veidt has indeed sold out his principles...which is not the case whatever...i like zach...i am happy that geek culture rules the world i just thought that this movie would be the first mature comic book hero movie to be made and no, tdk was not a mature comic book movie...it was a nice action adventure flick, with comic book characters in it

That said, they're all familiar with the GN, which bodes well for us, but maybe not so much for the rest of the country. I still wonder what mainstream critics are going to think. BUT, as of now, people like -Halfscan- and others trying their damndest to dig the negative out of hugely positive reviews just seem like the worst kind of geek, and I'm glad they won't be in my theater on opening day. Don't even bother arguing with them, because their minds are made up.

Now, I just come here to listen to the rants and raves about information that has already been released. Thankfully, there are plenty of "underground" sites that don't simply suck the cum from the cocks of the studio bigshots. For breaking news, I visit DarkHorizons. For other news...I have my sources on the net, of which, AICN is no longer a part. That said, I do enjoy reading Harry's reviews...when they aren't mingled with studio or poltical opinions. I do, however, miss the good ol' days...when the background actually showed a 1930s image of King Kong. I suppose when that changed, the site lost its charm.

Yep, it's there...but again, not in the way you might think. It's basically a "what if" scene, when Frodo looks into Galadriel's Mirror. You see the Shire in flames, and all the hobbits imprisoned by orcs/trolls/etc. Jackson also moved the Saruman/Wormtongue confrontation to the beginning of ROTK (extended edition), which originally took place during the Scouring.

Faraci was never not going to give it a rave review

    by paulsc

He's a decent writer but this wouldn't be the first time he'd obviously cemented his opinion on a movie long before he'd seen a frame. That, and the fact that his is the only unqualified rave review of Watchmen I've yet seen, prevent me from putting much stock in his viewpoint. Watchmen may well be a fine movie, but the reviews thus far don't suggest to me that it's true greatness we're looking at here. I'm not convinced this movie will be able to emerge from the graphic novel's huge shadow and make an impact on its own terms.

I wasn't a big fan of the Scouring myself

    by seagrass

always seemed out of place and anticlimactic, but that's just me. Jackson's main error in the theatrical ROTK was cutting out Saruman's demise...it didn't take up that much time, and there was plenty of fat at the end that could have been trimmed to make room for it.

... in a select number of theatres and see what the response is? Maybe wait a few weeks after the shorter version starts to run out of steam, then BAMM release the full version for a double-dip. People will buy the dvd regardless of what version they've seen. If they hate the shorter version they won't be in a rush to buy it in extended bluegay anyway, so why delay the full version when it's already made? Just saying, that's all.

Why we should love Megan Fox in her own words

    by drturing

From the GQ article: "After breakfast, Megan and I—along with a former Marine turned security guard named Anthony—will head out onto the Comic-Con floor, where Megan wants to meet some graphic artists whose work she admires and shop for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles T-shirt"

Fox seems in her element here: She marvels for nearly ten minutes over comic legend Michael Turner’s Batman sketches and, at one point, scolds me for an offhand comment about the nerds being out in full force. “They’re not nerds,” she says. “They’re just passionate.”

Fox adores superhero and fantasy films. “If I get stuck doing comic-book films for the rest of my life, I’ll be really happy,” she says. “I love those types of movies. And I don’t mind being sexy—if it’s a character with a backstory and an arc and something progresses.” But of course, comic-book movies aren’t known for complex character development, and when I ask Fox if she has more of a character in Transformers 2, which is now filming in L.A., she answers by stating the obvious: “Transformers 2 is directed by Michael Bay.”

Did they at least figure out a way to make the robots seem more human this time?

“You weren’t concerned about them making the humans seem more human?”

You know, that sun baked "Cheetos" Orange color that Micheal Bay gave her in the first Transformers movie (and I presume the second). Yeah, that's how I like my Megan Fox.

Without Having Seen It, My One Real Problem...

    by read and shut up

...is calling the band of superheroes "The Watchmen." That, in and of itself, pisses me off and misses this point: "Who watches the watchmen?" Anyone not reading the novel immediately thinks "yeah, those superheroes were out of control," when in truth, "The Watchmen" are ALL authority figures - from Nixon to the cops to the detectives at the beginning to the "costumed adventurers" themselves. Snyder de-balled that whole thing by calling them "The Watchmen."

Just got back from seeing it...

    by jackalcack

...at a screening in London. I liked it. Some minor spoilage... Rorschach was absolutely amazing. The guy nailed it. Comedian and Night Owl were also very good. In fact, all the characters were pretty much bang on except for Ozymandias who I thought they got very wrong. For me the Veidt in the comic was this good looking, charismatic, charming role model type. Likeable. The last guy you'd expect to be the villain. In the movie he was cold and creepy and quite obviously a rotter from the start. There was LOADS of slow mo, like in almost every fight scene and then some. Literally, they could shave 15 mins off this film if they took it all out. To be honest though, it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would though I can imagine it will really bug a lot of people as it has been such a contentious issue on these boards. My biggest concern going in was, of course, the ending. I was definitely a pro-squid guy but having seen it I get that to set up the squid would have taken more time. I would love to see a director's cut with it in but that's pretty unlikely. The whole blaming it on Doc Manhatten thing was handled well however and I felt that the meaning from the GN was kept in tact due to the way the world reacted to the explosions. Without spoiling anything too much, one thing I didn't like was how they explained the reasons for the comedian's death and how this tied into the climax. Despite my criticisms, the movie still worked for me as a whole because ultimately I cared about the characters and was emotionally engaged. It felt like Watchmen and I cannot wait to see the version with 'The Black Freighter' in.

news of the world review bullshit possible

    by lane_myers111

news of the world owned by rupert murdochs news corps. He obviously owns Fox. Did fox get just a compensation pay off and is it warners that are getting the box office money. Despite its mind numbingly stupid readership it is a popular paper.A bad review there could really hurt its box office in the UK. You should read some of the other movie reviews in the past. they could possibly be the worst opinions ever expressed about cinema. Surprisingly they loved all the fox made Starwars prequels.

its called having a life. I can't make every Watchmen talkback though lord knows I try. And you and I both know Jim Jarmusch and David Lynch would NEVER do a word by word, faithful adaptation so just step off it and quit pretending that would be a good ideal. Snyder already fucked up your beloved Watchmen so move on, You must have a life outside hating a film so much. As for me being known as a flamer? or a personal attacker who enjoys conflict? Could not be farther from the truth I love the boards and people on them and I use them to discuss how Cool things look to me and fellow talkbacks. Your obviously pulling for straws when you say I'm the kind of tber who goes around looking for conflict. You and Kurt should deserve each other man.

Silk Spectres 1 and 2 were both fine, not as strong as some of the other performances but by no means bad at all. Doc M felt true to the character in the comic and seeing as it's such a hard role to pull off, I felt Billy Crudup did a great job. I guess it's just Rorschach, Comedian and Night Owl were so good that they really stood out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. When those clips hit last week I suddenly felt very concerned about this film and my expectations dropped but I really did like it, I gave a shit about the characters and the audience I watched it with seemed to really enjoy it. The time flew by and that's always a good sign.

Let me explain...no that would take too long...

    by micturatingbenjamin

    Let me sum up.
Basically, Snyder says that the squid moment happening in the book, the giant squid in Times Square, causes the reader to do some backwards page flipping.Something specific to the book medium that has to translate to film, which can only be done clumsily if at all: Flashbacks, or pointer scenes like in Indy 1. (That's my description, he doesn't call it a pointer scene, I think he says exposition)But it totally makes sense. Without having to reel the movie backwards and take up time pointing out plot elements that seem to be incongruous, or having the villain spout off his whole plan (which Ozy does in the book, but has already completed his plan by that time), it's something that was perfect for the book but in film would have been too clumsy.I get the feeling that Snyder knows he's not the greatest auteur of this generation, he knows his limitations, from this interview. If you click the link above, speed to the end, there are links in the window. What? Did nobody watch that review? :) If the guy beats his wife, I'm a monkey's uncle Buck. Because he seems like a bit of a puss/spaz. Just saying.

Difference between adapting LOTR and Watchmen

    by most excellent ninja

Both have been tagged 'unfilmable' but moreso that always meant it becoming a "good" film. LOTR was called unfilmable because of the sheer scope, it's a linear story, technically it wouldn't be hard to adapt if the technology was available. Just turning that huge story into a film seemed impossible. But it wasn't. It ended up being some of the greatest films ever made.
Watchmen however, isn't a linear story, it is all over the place and was written to show what other mediums cannot do, why the Comic book has so many advantages over just about every medium. That's what makes it unfilmable. It would take a true visionary and would have to be nothing other than an experimental arthouse film, why I think this is because the Doc Manhattan scene would just come out of nowhere and in a film where acts don't matter would seem great, but for a major mainstream film. Probably not. Or it'd be fucked with. That's why I thought LOTR was safe because the major details and the spirit are what mattered, with Watchmen, the spirit isn't enough - it needs more. Plus Peter Jackson is a real filmmaker and on another level than Zack Snyder.

    Stargate Producer's thoughts

    by dioxholster

"Monday saw him delivering a tough and very emotional performance that he nailed not once, not twice, but five times, every one as strong as the one before. After the fifth take, I glanced over at Exec. Producer Rob Cooper who was looking back at me with a knowing smile, well aware of exactly what I was going to say: “He‘s great!” A wide-eyed Exec. Producer Carl, sitting to my left, concurred with an enthusiastic nod. I predict a long and successful career ahead of him.

One of the things that first struck me about Brian was (and continues to be) his genuine enthusiasm for his work. On the day of his costume fitting, he swung by the writers’ room for a quick chat. We pitched him out a little more of his character backstory in addition to some of the little surprises we had in store for Lieutenant Scott. Well, his eyes lit up as if we’d just presented him with the keys to a brand new sports car. Much along the same lines - whenever he’s on set, you’ll be hardpressed to find him without a smile on his face."

    "Nothing ever ends"

    by fuck the napkin

"...is the line "Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends." spoken by Doc Manhattan near the end?!?"
As someone's already pointed out, Laurie says it. But if it's any consolation, she says "I know that Jon would say 'nothing ever ends' but I something something..." or something along those lines, so it's sort of attributed to Jon. Kind of.
