DEEP SPACE NINE-4400 Showrunner Ira Steven Behr Is Now Steering Starz’ CRASH!!

Published at:  Feb 24, 2009 2:08:34 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Starz has given its widely despised TV-series version of “Crash” a second 13-episode season, but has demoted first-season showrunner Glen Mazzara (“Nash Bridges,” “The Shield”) to “consulting producer.” Which I’m guessing means he’s been deservedly banned from the writer’s room.

The show’s new showrunner is the great Ira Steven Behr, who also served as showrunner on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “The 4400.” (Behr also co-wrote 1990’s brilliant “Yesterday’s Enterprise” episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”)

About half the cast, including Dennis Hopper, will survive into season two, and the series will focus less on members of the LAPD, according to the Tuesday-morning story in The Hollywood Reporter.

    Interesting...

I haven't watched the show, because I simply despised the film. Ira Steven Behr is a smart guy so I could be a turning point for the show. Maybe it will be less despised. I always thought he would be a good choice for showrunner on the upcoming live action Star Wars show. We all know DS9 was the best Trek series made.

Write some aliens into the show and I'll watch

    It's a show about racism.

So I'm sure it's already full of aliens.

Ira was one of many writers on Yesterdays Enterprise.

    by v'shael

Isn't there a WGA rule that limits the numbers of writers that can be credited with an episode or something?

But I seem to recall there was at least six writers on that particular episode. Maybe more.

    A quick wikipedia check shows
    Trent Christopher Ganino
    Eric A. Stillwell
    Ira Steven Behr
    Richard Manning
    Hans Beimler
    Ronald D. Moore
so it's probably a bit unfair to imply Ira had a large hand in that episode.

    I liked The 4400

It wasn't stellar, but it's a shame that the show got cancelled before it could come to a resolution.

I've saw bits and pieces of the show.

The only parts that we're somewhat entertaining we're the Dennis Hopper bits the rest we're either grating family drama or a second-rate Shield rip-off. I like ISB as a writer so it'll be interesting to see where it goes.

I met Behr at a Trek Convention

he is a really great down-to-earth guy, and lets face it - he knows how to construct short fiction.
Also, the 'pitch' for Yesterday's Enterprise was 100% Behr. The did the intitial 'guys I have this idea...' to which Moore and Co. said, "we like it..." and proceeded to hammer out the specific details as part of a quorum.

well i stand corrected, and so does this article

    by arcadian del sol

Yesterday's Enterprise was Eric Stillwell's 'baby' and it was Trent Christopher Ganino who punched it up into a screenplay.

    Yesterday's Enterprise

Michael Piller also had a hand in writing that episode but voluntarily removed his name from the writing credits because of the WGA rules.

The story goes that the TNG writers were really struggling for teleplays mid-way into season 3 and had no scripts ready to shoot. So Piller ordered Ira Steven Behr, Richard Manning, Hans Beimler, Ronald D. Moore and Eric Stillwell to write an act of the teleplay each - literally overnight so they'd be ready to go into production the next day. Funny how one of the best episodes of TNG was probably the most disorganised and hastily written.

that kind of clashes with every account of this ever spoken or written.
I've found three internet sources quoting three different people on your list who all say the same thing: Stillwell wrote it, and then Piller wrote down a list of things he wanted changed, and Behr+others set about actually implementing his list of changes.

When I wrote my original message, I was going mainly off memory – admittedly going back about 10 years as it’s probably over a decade since I last saw this episode. But I’ve since checked the story in the Star Trek: TNG Companion. If you take a look at pages 116 – 117: According to story writer Eric Stillwell, the writing staff didn’t think the show would work because it’s teleplay was written by committee and rushed to first draft in just three days to meet a pushed-up shooting schedule.“They thought it was going to be horrible because they don’t like having to write something and make it work in three days.” Later it says “Piller voluntarily took his name off the credits to meet the stringent Writers Guild credit limit of four names.” What are your three internet sources, can you post the links please?
