MTV has a STAR TREK Featurette too!

Published at:  Feb 21, 2009 9:32:58 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I really feel that JJ and the team on STAR TREK need to start selling the "threat" that faces our characters in this new STAR TREK... and to get us concerned about the threat. Cuz right now... the assorted big shots of explosions and wreckage seem to be the same images being rearranged. I know most of us are very much going to be seeing this on opening day, but I know from folks that have seen the whole thing, that there's an immense amount of this film that still isn't even being hinted at, and I am curious how these featurettes work on all of you? Are you excited? Or do you want more?

All too often they reveal too much about movies. I hope that what hasn't been hinted at stays that way. I'd like to go in to this not knowing much about it and waiting on the parts of the trailer that I remember like most movies.

I don't want too much revealed, like that FUNNY PEOPLE trailer that chronicled the entire frackin' film...beginning...middle...and end. I have zero desire to see FUNNY PEOPLE now, the trailer showed it all! I don't need STAR TREK ruined for me like that.

I mean Really..I don't know how you can fuck up a movie about a giant monster trashing a fucking city..but this guy managed to do it. Made the boys at ToHo look like Movie making Gods.Worst of all is his choice in writers. Bob Orci and his circle jerk partner Kurtzman are the brain trust that brought you "My Bad" pissing robots, MI3, Eagle Eye, and Xena Princess Fucking Warrior. And now they are putting their poison pens to an honest to fucking God Cultural Icon... Mark my words....there is little hope for this actually being a good film past the special effects and Zoe Saldanas underwear scene.

    by lonegun

...close to the chest, offering only small advance nibbles of the big pie to come. I find that appealing. It worked well with CLOVERFIELD. Although there was a tremendous amount of hype generated for CLOVERFIELD before its release, it really was 2008's best kept secret. (Really surprised it didn't make Harry's Top Ten List.) JJ's STAR TREK may also sell itself better on "less" than on "more". "Less" will certainly make for a more enjoyable first-time viewing experience.

    canon

    by vadakinx

I despise Orci and Kurtzman's Transformers script. I'm convinced I am a better writer than them but I'm a nobody so it doesn't matter.

Little jealous rant aside, I think it was Orci who tried to explain away the canon issue. Basically, according to him (and Einstein apparently), there is no single canon. I think it has something to do with string theory though I'm not sure.

Essentially, he says that everytime there was a time travel episode or movie, it created an alternate universe.

Take City on the Edge of Forever for instance (it that the ep? been a while...) When Kirk and co return to their own time, they actually go to an alternate universe and the universe they came from goes on as normal.

First Contact. Same thing. The Enterprise returns home and it's an alternate universe where Cochran remembers seeing Borg.

The Voyage Home. Kirk and co return home, the aliens are satisfied that all is well with the whales or whatever. However in the universe that Kirk was in before he went back in time, there are no whales and the aliens exacted terrible revenge...or something.

But what about the episodes with time travellers from the future I hear you say...well they would also be affected. The Temperal Cold War from "Enterprise" takes place over many alternate universes due to the number of times time travel was involved.

So, in the new movie, Spock goes back in time and changes the past....what happens from there is that the timeline is split. You have the original timeline, the one Spock came from, and the ne timeline, the one he creates when he changes the past. Therefore the Trek you all know still exists in one (technically many due to the amount of time travel over the years) timeline and the new Trek exists in another.

Having said that, it's still a bit of a cop out, but hey, I was in favour of a full reboot so what do I know.

...I know Kurtzman & Orci wrote it. And they have one of the worst track records ever - The Island? Transformers? Zorro 2? Need I say more? The only screenwriter who has gone below that is Akiva Goldsman, and as interesting as the actor and directing could be, the story is EVERYTHING.

So, while it's just a bunch of intercut scenes with no real sense of plot or danger, it doesn't matter....I'm sure K&O took care of churning out their usual pap.

That was odd. Not so much the action of watching Silk Spectre and Nightowl cutting a swath through the prisoners, but the way it was edited. The music and slowmo made it look and sound like Znyder was doing a parody/homage to 300.

seemed to me that he was doing a take on batman and robin but its a very odd scene to choose, and way too heavy handed the action didnt seem realistic, so i would like to know what his point is the cool thing about the novel is that these are middle aged people trying to recapture a bygone time...so while they may still be able to fight, they arent superhuman about it...they get punched, kicked, beaten...but enjoy it, because it makes them feel alive the scene is wierd

I don't want to be told a backstory that totally screws up my view of Kirk, Spock, Bones, etc. Maybe it's just me. But today, when I went to the movies, I saw a poster of Eric Bana's villain and all I could do was laugh and laugh. I don't think that's what they had intended. Menace? I did not get from seeing him stare down at me.

    by jorson28

I'll admit, this TREK is obviously aimed at a "wider audience" and admittedly, some of it probably won't be CANON (time travel is probably a hint there...), but looking like a TV movie? There's probably more money in the shots seen in the trailers than in the first third of any given season of VOYAGER or ENTERPRISE alone. Frankly, as much as I love Trek and as much as I respect it for its cultural (and scientific) significance, I'm actually hoping Paramount is "greedy" with this because it would show they actually care that Trek continues. Even if this film just winds up being a big-budget reintroduction to the original characters with a little less of the philosophizing of Trek's past, if it succeeds, that means sequels which, I think after recent superhero fare like Spider-Man 2 and The Dark Knight, we should know doesn't automatically mean diminishing quality. In fact, considering the ensemble nature of the film and franchise, I'm betting we get a much better sequel in three years than what we'll see in May simply by virtue of the chemistry between the actors and the characters being set in place and the NEW version of Kirk and crew's canon being on track and ready to be developed further and in ways probably more reminiscent of "classic Trek." 'Still unsure whether or not the idea to recast the original characters for a film like this was a great idea to begin with, but if someone were going to do it, this is probably the best way, all things considered.

Type 'RyallTime' into google…then click on his blogspot…then type Khan in his search…then you’ll see the TWOK artwork for the comic and details...coming this summer in 3 issues.

This is BIG news for ST comic fans....Khan was the only original trek film not to get the comic adaptation treatment...well neither do Insurrection & Nemesis but WGAF right?....

hopefully they will expand on the film - e.g. showing Khan take the Reliant and showing the Genesis team getting tortured like in the novel.

Oh and regarding the new film...i have high hopes..i mean i WANT to love it and to be great but i sorta got burned with Superman Returns (not too much..but a little)..thinking it was gonna be the second coming and all that so now im holding back till i see the movie...(it will be great though..well maybe not KHAN great as that was a fuckin' classic, but hopefully in the great catogry along with Treks III, IV, VI and VIII....just so long as it isnt in the 'ok' section - I and VII or heaven forebid the bad - V, IX and X)

So this turd of a movie...

    by everythingeverywherestinks

...takes place in an alternate timeline, separate from the other Star Trek movies and television shows? So why should I care about what happens? It seems kind of stupid for a character that was as smart as Spock was supposed to be to waste all that time and effort to "fix" someone ELSE'S parallel universe. Why can't the parallel universe Spock fix HIS OWN damn broken timeline? Is he a lazy bastard, or just stupid? And by "fix" I mean give lend "studio credibility" to a really shitty remake. That's all this film is; a remake (or reimagining, whatever the retarded word is for it these days) with a token nod to the original show to keep the "faithful" happy. Star Trek's dead, but the hardcore fanboy Trekkies who will watch anything with the "Trek" brand name on it refuse to accept it.

    Why so contrived?

    by agnosticyesno

I enjoy Star Trek and grew up watching the original series, and have no problem with making a new version. However, a total reboot without all the time travel contrivance would make for a more interesting movie and in fact “respect” the trek-freaks more. This is kind of comic book rebooting is an attempt to satisfy everyone and consequently will most likely fail to be a good movie. A reboot ought to make improve on what the original did, not just up date it. Just make a movie that captures some essence of Star Trek. Forget about all of the twisting and bending in order to fit and unfit the so-called canon. Galactica and Bond has shown T.V. and movie makers what ought to be done.

If JJ is holding back footage...

    by mr gorilla

...so that to know what the story is you have to watch the film rather than piece together different trailers - then GOOD ON HIM! Going to see a blockbuster when I don't know what the story is - I haven't had that experience since about 1987.

    Not A Special Movie

    by georgieboy

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a special movie. Something the fans had pined for for years. Not an "action" movie, but a thoughtful relaunch of the original characters.

This movie on the other hand doesn't look like it's anything special. Just another in a long long of forgettable slam-bang action movies. Might as well call it "Star Wars: Episode I: Now With Capitol Ships!"

The difference between Star Trek and other Reboots...

    by bones

So, I Finally figured out what has been bugging me since I started seeing footage of this film. Yes, the production design makes me want to vomit. Yes, the emphasis on ACTION! KABOOM!! YAHOOO!!! is a little troubling.
But in the end, the people in this film ARE NOT THE CREW OF THE ORIGINAL ENTERPRISE.
Star Trek is NOT like James Bond, or Batman or any of the other films that have been restarted or recast. The are all adaptations of other mediums. Star Trek was created as a Television Show and the actors became synonymous with their characters--So much so that when they wanted to continue Star Trek, they created sequels on other ships with other crews.
Now, this new film comes along. And everytime I look at the young actors, I don't see the characters they are supposed to be playing--I see young actors pretending to be the characters I grew up with. And it is f*cking annoying.
Unless I see something incredible in the trailer attached to Watchmen--and I mean in terms of character interaction not blowing sh*t up--you can get that from any movie these days, I am almost 100% guaranteed to skip this.
When people want to know what kind of film I think would inspire a good Star Trek film, I always tell them Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World or one of the great Submarine action films like Desination Tokyo, Run Silent Run Deep, or Das Boot...If you can mix that kind of nautical feeling with tension and some sort of social message, you get the feeling that a Star Trek story is best at telling.
Everything I keep seeing and hearing about this project rubs me the wrong way...So, Pass.

Any film that gets the costumed fanboys up in arms (isn't that pretty much every film?) the way this one has is one of lifes simple pleasures. This is the Trek film for people who don't speak Klingon, and never, even want to.

If you don't like Star Trek, and mock the people who do--why see the film? I mean, you are either a Star Trek fan or you aren't. And why (besides making money) would anyone make a Star Trek movie that craps on it's fans? At what point does this stop being Star Trek and become STINO (Star Trek in Name Only)?
