New Gilliam images! Posters for IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS!

Published at:  Feb 21, 2009 3:09:38 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Even before the tragic death of Heath Ledger, this film was high on my radar. In fact, if circumstances had been different I would have been on this set in February 08. I was in talks to come visit and as a life-long fan I was psyched to see Terry Gilliam work. Understandably, everything changed when the production was faced with figuring out how to proceed after Ledger's death.

But that doesn't hamper my excitement at all. In fact, I think Gilliam might have been forced to make an incredibly creative and fascinating decision in bringing multiple actors to finish the work that Heath began.

As far as I know, this is the first time we've seen a glimpse of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell in the movie. I may be completely out of the loop on this stuff, though, so forgive me if I'm speaking out of tune.

I know the second image has been out, but now it's an official poster. It certainly all feels very Terry Gilliam, doesn't it? Can't wait to see how this one shapes up. Enjoy!

    Incredibly creative decision? Nope.

    by lorquaine

It was not an "incredibly creative decision" to cast a few replacement actors. Other directors have done it before, like Buñuel in "That Obscure Object of Desire". The only difference is that Gilliam was forced to make such a decision. So it was not creative. He had a problem to solve, and he only needed to look into the history books.

    by liljuniorbrown

He went off the rails for a while but he seems to be getting back into shape. I thought his last film was really good and I hope he gets some more awards out of the deal. I still get pissed at the cartoonish way he was wasted in Daredevil. If that same cast (with some exceptions)were in a Daredevil film written in a real world tone like Dark Knight or Iron Man it would have kicked ass. He would have been the perfect Bulls Eye.

I understand that there are fans who love certain actors, but what makes them different from everyone else? the fact they make movies and tons of cash and are high on the social radar?Everyone gets so wacked out when an actor dies...you know what, so does everyone else, all of our lives are important. I liked heath's work before he died and felt alittle pang, but i never knew him personally, he never contributed anything to my life that changed me, or helped me along in my life, he worked his job like the rest of us..only difference is he got paid millions and was seen by everyone.

    by performingmonkey

It's the 15 minute short that starts off Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life. Utterly brilliant! Gilliam was only supposed to make a 6 minute sketch but then went over budget ('because no-one told me to stop') by turning it into a 30 minute film, that was then cut down to be used as the short shown before Meaning of Life, though it was often shown seperately. OK, Brazil is pretty good as well...

Just got awarded the lifetime award by the British Film Academy. Hope that's not a bad omen.

Tideland didn't work, apart from the amazing ending.

But anyone who directed Life of Brian, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, etcetc, needs all the box office we can give him.

And I frikking LOVE Baron M. Some of it is a meandering mess, and Eric Idle is always annoying. But the cuts back and forth between the theatre and the story, and the angel of death, are amazing. I love the ending to that too. And the ending to Time Bandits. In fact, every time Gilliam makes a movie involving escaping into the imagination, it has a kickass ending, so I'm guessing this will too.

I think maybe having a very specific kind of frakked up childhood made me relate to it. Regardless of whether or not you liked it, its clear to me that Gilliam did exactly what he wanted to in that movie -- and its that "screw what i should do, im going to do it this way" that makes him so polarizingly wonderful.

Tideland isn't a bad movie at all...

    by thead

But it's definitely not a very likeable movie. I think people need to stop lumping everything they don't like into the "bad" category. It definitely takes a creepy turn in the second half of the film and the ending of the film is a little ambiguous, but I definitely think it improves when you can sit back and not be as blindsided by the awfulness of what's happening around and to the girl and her obliviousness to it. I'm not sure I want to revisit the film much, but I can't honestly say the movie is bad.

That said, Twelve Monkeys, Brazil, and The fisher king are all fantastic. Munchausen has it's charm even if it's a little bloated but there are reasons for that. I'd definitely watch the worst gilliam film over most of the trash hyped by studio's these days.

    Lynch

    by kuryakin

Over-rated? Have at ye,Jugdish ye cur!!

It's interesting to compare Lynch and Gilliam though, because there are very few directors out there whose works are so instantly identifiable, a combination of themes, obsessions and techniques.

As a fan of both I can watch a film and go, man that was awesome, 100% Gilliam there - yet the next movie I'll say man that was shit, 100% Gilliam, the guy's lost it.

Dammit thanks to beer I'm not expressing myself well here but what I guess I'm trying to say is that when it comes to directors like Lynch or Gilliam, I feel it's their work as a whole, or their style maybe, that you appreciate rather than individual work.

eg Love Lost Highway, hate Mulholland Drive.

Couldn't tell you why really, they are so similar in style and tone etc. The things I love in one I hate in the other - same exact thing for Gilliam.

Oh fuck this, i'm to drunk to keep re-typing these errors - have a good one everybody!

Why all that hate on Tideland..?

    by avon

It's an adaption on a particularly grim and dark book, and done quite faithfully. In that respect it's a great artistic achievement and Gilliam can hardly be blamed for the story! It's his adaption of someone elses story. If you don't like it, you probably wouldn't like the book. It doesn't mean it's a bad movie for everybody. I thought it was great, though the junkie mum that dies in it I thought was the one terrible thing in it.
