New Gilliam images! Posters for IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Even before the tragic death of Heath Ledger, this film was high on my radar. In fact, if circumstances had been different I would have been on this set in February 08. I was in talks to come visit and as a life-long fan I was psyched to see Terry Gilliam work. Understandably, everything changed when the production was faced with figuring out how to proceed after Ledger's death.
But that doesn't hamper my excitement at all. In fact, I think Gilliam might have been forced to make an incredibly creative and fascinating decision in bringing multiple actors to finish the work that Heath began.
As far as I know, this is the first time we've seen a glimpse of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell in the movie. I may be completely out of the loop on this stuff, though, so forgive me if I'm speaking out of tune.
I know the second image has been out, but now it's an official poster. It certainly all feels very Terry Gilliam, doesn't it? Can't wait to see how this one shapes up. Enjoy!

hey, it works :P

yummy
-
we could'nt get Nic Cage - he was to busy making some other piece of shit w/amazing acting & spot-on perfect hair
-
Man, Gilliam's awesome... This movie's going to be great! He needs to collaborate with Neil Gaimen.
-
Give these guys a hand for completing this. More power for everybody. Haters can go to hell for all I care.

...."The Steaming Piles of Dr. Poop.

Dancing Bears in TuTu's?
They're even cooler than Nic Cage's amazing acting and spot on perfect hair -
can't wait for this.

It was not an "incredibly creative decision" to cast a few replacement actors. Other directors have done it before, like Buñuel in "That Obscure Object of Desire". The only difference is that Gilliam was forced to make such a decision. So it was not creative. He had a problem to solve, and he only needed to look into the history books.
-
Enlighten me.
-
Other than a mini trailer that was released a While ago I have heard jack shit about this movie, which I really want to see.
-
looks wonderful.
-
He went off the rails for a while but he seems to be getting back into shape. I thought his last film was really good and I hope he gets some more awards out of the deal. I still get pissed at the cartoonish way he was wasted in Daredevil. If that same cast (with some exceptions)were in a Daredevil film written in a real world tone like Dark Knight or Iron Man it would have kicked ass. He would have been the perfect Bulls Eye.
-
I understand that there are fans who love certain actors, but what makes them different from everyone else? the fact they make movies and tons of cash and are high on the social radar?Everyone gets so wacked out when an actor dies...you know what, so does everyone else, all of our lives are important. I liked heath's work before he died and felt alittle pang, but i never knew him personally, he never contributed anything to my life that changed me, or helped me along in my life, he worked his job like the rest of us..only difference is he got paid millions and was seen by everyone.

None whatsoever. BARON MUCHAUSEN is a prime example. Don't expect too much of this. The visuals are sure to be dazzling, but that's all.

Tideland is one of the worst movies I've ever seen
by nasty in the pasty
But I like Giliam in general.

Gaiman and Gilliam would be a perfect match indeed.

TOM. WAITS. IS. GREAT.
-
It's the 15 minute short that starts off Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life. Utterly brilliant! Gilliam was only supposed to make a 6 minute sketch but then went over budget ('because no-one told me to stop') by turning it into a 30 minute film, that was then cut down to be used as the short shown before Meaning of Life, though it was often shown seperately. OK, Brazil is pretty good as well...
-
Add the overrated David Lynch to that category too

Gilliams been out to pasture for a loooong time...
by whinynegativebitch
...This sadly probably wont bring him back. Especially with the last minute desperate attempt to keep it on the rails. So I hear hes taking another stab at Don Quixote? Maybe that will work. Been a long time.
-
That movie was running non-stop in the electronics department at work for like a month.
Thank you, SoylentMean, for dredging up that painful memory. -
Was Gilliam, wasn't it? That was a great movie.
-
Troy McClure and Heath Ledger: RIP
-
makes everything better, and good things great. If they'd just worked him into the Pirates sequels, I'd have LOVED them despite their stupidity. Really looking forward to this.
-
Been going around alot lately. As far as Gilliam's track record: BRAZIL is a great movie, the first third of 12 MONKEYS is fantastic, and FEAR AND LOATHING is wonderful though obviously he's not responsible for the story.
-
Just got awarded the lifetime award by the British Film Academy. Hope that's not a bad omen.
Tideland didn't work, apart from the amazing ending.
But anyone who directed Life of Brian, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, etcetc, needs all the box office we can give him.
And I frikking LOVE Baron M. Some of it is a meandering mess, and Eric Idle is always annoying. But the cuts back and forth between the theatre and the story, and the angel of death, are amazing. I love the ending to that too. And the ending to Time Bandits. In fact, every time Gilliam makes a movie involving escaping into the imagination, it has a kickass ending, so I'm guessing this will too. -
Quint is the new Harry is the new Ringo Starr is the new Yogi Berra
-
I'm going to seduce ALL of you Mrs. Robinsons.
-
Just shut up and make something watchable. This guy is the most un-lucky filmmaker I've ever seen.
-
took a few viewings to really like it, so is everything else by Gilliam, I'd sooner watch one of his "lesser" movies than half the shite that gets churned out
-
But not if I shoot his nuts off with a shotgun first...
-
This is one hell of poster! Who knows how it will turn out but just the same, said poster is badass!
-
Doesn't fucking suck like The Brothers Grimm. Man what a HUGE let down.
-
In korean the title is "The Imagination Theater of Parnassus Doctor."
-
then doesn't that mean the first time you didn't like it and then even though you didn't like you made yourself watch it again and you STILL didn't like but then you made yourself watch it yet again and then finally the third time, YES, you finally liked it? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING TO YOURSELF? STOP IT! STOP DOING THAT TO YOURSELF! No, I'm just playing with you. But you are nuts, you know.
-
I mean I liked it then after repeat viewings (because I liked it) I began to really like it, of course watching all the behind the scenes dvd extras helped enhance the viewings, but of course your right, watch enough shit and you start to like it.
-
I think maybe having a very specific kind of frakked up childhood made me relate to it. Regardless of whether or not you liked it, its clear to me that Gilliam did exactly what he wanted to in that movie -- and its that "screw what i should do, im going to do it this way" that makes him so polarizingly wonderful.
-
I love me some Gilliam. Cannot wait for this.
-
and GRIMM is funny as hell. nice to see all the BRAZIL love. and some things (music, mainly) do grow on one with repetition
-
But the illustration looks to be his character

December 18 - Witness the greatest movie ever made!
by standundermyumbrella
You know its true
-
But it's definitely not a very likeable movie. I think people need to stop lumping everything they don't like into the "bad" category. It definitely takes a creepy turn in the second half of the film and the ending of the film is a little ambiguous, but I definitely think it improves when you can sit back and not be as blindsided by the awfulness of what's happening around and to the girl and her obliviousness to it. I'm not sure I want to revisit the film much, but I can't honestly say the movie is bad.
That said, Twelve Monkeys, Brazil, and The fisher king are all fantastic. Munchausen has it's charm even if it's a little bloated but there are reasons for that. I'd definitely watch the worst gilliam film over most of the trash hyped by studio's these days. -
Letting Gilliam make a movie that is finally a success at the Box Office. Hey, it helped TDK.
-
thanks for putting it more eloquently than I ever could,
Does anyone have any news of his other movie in production "Zero Theorem" a sci fi with Billy Bob? -
i'd put that up in my house!
-
I am already FUCKING SICK of seeing unrelated threads peppered with "AVATAR - FUCKING YOUR EYEBALLS IN 2009". These plants-for-hire are actually creating a lot of resentment towards the movie already.
-
It is a hateful, HATEFUL movie.
-
But the saying goes "speaking out of turn" not "tune"... Just thought you might like to know.
-
His movies just look gaudy and trashy. Lost in La Mancha is the only thing I've been able to tolerate him in.

I'm getting that "Adventures of Baron Munchausen" vibe
by shub-wankalot
and that's not a bad thing, when it's Gilliam at the helm.

So I guess we will hear cars and noise on Heath's dialogue
by ricarleite
Because he did die before looping his dialogue, right? Unless Anthony Hopkins was hired to, once again, loop a dead actor.
-
granted, his recent movies have been mediocre. but you can never discount his ambition even in his lesser works. and when he's good, he's reaaallly good. brazil is still in my top 10 list of all time best movies. and then there's 12 monkeys as well.
-
As in completely unwatchable and I watched the whole thing just to be certain. It's obvious Gilliam lost his touch and his mind during Lost in La Mancha. This Parnassus movie has a certain curiosity factor but I'm 99.9% certain Dark Knight will be what's remembered as Heath Ledger's last film.
-
"Total artistic and storytelling failure" is a start.

Over-rated? Have at ye,Jugdish ye cur!!
It's interesting to compare Lynch and Gilliam though, because there are very few directors out there whose works are so instantly identifiable, a combination of themes, obsessions and techniques.
As a fan of both I can watch a film and go, man that was awesome, 100% Gilliam there - yet the next movie I'll say man that was shit, 100% Gilliam, the guy's lost it.
Dammit thanks to beer I'm not expressing myself well here but what I guess I'm trying to say is that when it comes to directors like Lynch or Gilliam, I feel it's their work as a whole, or their style maybe, that you appreciate rather than individual work.
eg Love Lost Highway, hate Mulholland Drive.
Couldn't tell you why really, they are so similar in style and tone etc. The things I love in one I hate in the other - same exact thing for Gilliam.
Oh fuck this, i'm to drunk to keep re-typing these errors - have a good one everybody!
-
It's an adaption on a particularly grim and dark book, and done quite faithfully. In that respect it's a great artistic achievement and Gilliam can hardly be blamed for the story! It's his adaption of someone elses story. If you don't like it, you probably wouldn't like the book. It doesn't mean it's a bad movie for everybody. I thought it was great, though the junkie mum that dies in it I thought was the one terrible thing in it.
-
Yes, there are similarities, but Lynch is fantastic, and knows exactly what he is doing with his films. You may not understand Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive or INLAND EMPIRE, but I feel I have a pretty god understanding of what they are all about.
-
It's pretty good.
