Here are the other INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS posters!

Published at:  Feb 20, 2009 12:25:20 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I still don't know what to make of this movie... I love Tarantino, I love WW2 movies and this one looks fucking nuts. I refuse to read the script (I understand the third act is radically different now anyway) because I want to experience this in the theater for the first time.

Harry premiered what I think is the coolest of the three posters last night and I wanted to post all three of 'em in one post so you can scroll up and down and compare.

First up is AICN's premiere, second IGN's and third showed up on Empire! Enjoy!

The one with the knife is really cool. The other two are just so so. The one with the rifle would've been cooler if it just said Basterds, carved in a cool way. And the bat is an iconic thing in the movie, but the helmet should've had a big dent in it or something better. The one with the knife is the best by far.

    by 3 bag enema

    I'm guessing it's just to distinguish the title from the other movie with the exact same title. And they don't make a distinction between regular SS and Waffen, or whatever, they just kill a lot of Nazis. Including blowing up Hitler and Goebbels in a movie theater at the end. {Spoiler!}

I was mildly interested in this movie after reading the script, but the more I see of it (with the exception of that first publicity shot of Brad Pitt, which looked great) I am getting less and less interested in this movie.Pictures of guns and knives are impersonal, stupid ways to sell a movie. Why not a shot of all the Basterds lined up holding scalps or something? They could do it like one of those old timey war portraits. Now that would be interesting. Everything about this project that has shown up lately just screams "Half-assed."

God, you're part of the reason most american films nowadays suck so much ass.
Quentin Tarantino (creator of Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and the awesomely awesome pile of awesomeness called Kill Bill) is doing a World War II flick with a torture twist or something. Watch the trailer again, and keep thinking "Inglourious Basterds by Joel Schumacher" and see if you still think it looks cool. In other words, dissasociate it with Reservior Dogs and Pulp Fiction and try to watch it objectively.

It's kind of weird, this movie has the exact opposite effect that Terminator Salvation has had on me. When I heard of the idea for this, I was stoked. When I heard of the idea, and the director for T:S, I was bummed. Now after having seen both trailers, I am stoked for Terminator and bummed for this.

    I have a serious question

    by billemic

This movie seems to promise a non-stop barrage of Nazi killing. That may not even be the case, but it's how it's being advertised. But do you think there's a chance that viewers could actually relent and start to feel a bit of sympathy for the Nazis? I mean, I know they're the most evil bastards of the 20th century, but still. Do you really want to see 2 hours of them getting bats to their heads? Unless QT is constantly inner-cutting their torture with shots of Holocaust victims or something, I can see this backfiring.

Ummm ... no. I'm going with no on the sympathy for the Nazis. And, sure, I wouldn't mind watching two hours of them getting their heads beaten in. What actually concerns me is that awful trailer with Brad Pitt. Love Tarantino, love Pitt, but that was just weird in a really, really bad way. Almost to the point of seeming like parody.

Also, just to shorten this talkback, I think we can all agree that, based solely on the posters and teaser trailer, this movie will suck harder than Paris Hilton during fleet week.
    OR
it will be right up there with Goodfellas and Casablanca as one of the all-time greatest cinematic experiences ever filmed. Because we all know, a movie can ONLY be one or the other. According to the posters we've seen.

    by hegele

That argument has been around since filmmakers started to get bigger than their films, and you know what? Ultimately its irrelevant because it goes two ways. Look at the trailer and think "Inglourious Basterds" from Sly Stalone, all those who think Stallong is going to make what IB should have been with The Expendables would jizz over it. Think "Inglourious Basterds by P.T.A., Inglourious Basterds by Martin Scorsese, Inglourious Basterds by Zach Snyder. Those who think Watchmen is the second coming would come a third time with the trailer.

Its just a dumb argument. People who trust QT will get exited and people who hate him will ultimately dislike it. Nothing we can do.

Personally...I think all the current directors should just hand over their creative abilities & let us start making their own movies for us...the way that we want them to be made...then we'd all be satisified...no more of this sucks that & that sucks this & you can all suck a little of this or that. From here on out it'd be perfect movies just the way we all want 'em made. We'd no longer have to watch all these sorry ass movies made by these hackish director's who have proven time & time again that nobody supports or even likes this garbage & that these movies just keep gettin' made for the hell of it. Hell...what with the current state of the economy...we might even start saving some cash here & there...me...welp...I'll continue to be a slave to these tired ass hack directors & their terrible cliche'd beat ass romp fests on film. Based on the posters alone...& the fact that the cast sucks...I'll definently plant my ass in a seat for an encore showing on opening night if at all possible...just as soon as they correct the spelling on these foolish posters.

Zac and Miri Make a Porno

    by enderandrew

I love our society that it is fine to have a blood covered knife or baseball bat, and that is fine to show to kids. But Kevin Smith had a movie poster with no nudity, but people were kneeling in front of Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, and that poster gets banned. The best part is that the person kneeling in front of Banks couldn't possibly give head from that angle in any universe, and again, clothes were on. The poster was just a subtle hint at sexual activity, and that is far worse in our society than barbaric killing.

Or hows about a story about a group of Japanese civilians out for revenge after the bombing of civilians in Nagasaki, Hiroshima, and the indiscriminate fire bombing of Tokyo? Or how about a group of Poles out to murder Truman and Churchill for betraying them to Stalin at Potsdam?Nazi's have been done to death, its time to take a look at the other arch villains who murdered by the millions. QT's movies are usually better than 90% of what else gets released. Let's at least see the movie before we bash it. QT obviously loves movies. Do you want to destroy this movie before it even comes out, to make way for the next [fill in blank] movie? Cut the guy a little fucking slack. He cares about movies, just like all of us do.

It's not the villifying Germans that bothers me, it's the American exceptionalism, the same kind that led to sh*t like Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. The idea that "if we do it, it's not really a crime." For Tarantino, it seems like a license to portray what I call righteous sadism, something that crept in during Kill Bill. Notice how he only showed the Bride's pain, but all the violence perpetrated by the Bride was either justified or played for laughs. Now, excuse me but I'm about to be called a f*gg*t b y someone who is clearly cooler than me.

Love all Tarantulino's Films (including the heavily underrated Jackie Brown.. thought Grindhouse was OK, liked RR's part better).. Sorry to say, but the trailer looks like ass. Violent, ridiculous, badly acted, but well shot and packaged ass.Sorry guys, but this will make very little money, if it makes any it will be because lovers of violent films, Tarantino groupies, and Brad Pitt fans who'll watch anything he's in will buy tickets. I'm glad that QT isn't splashing the whole "From the makers of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill" across this thing, because the Tarantino name isn't what it was in the mid 90's-early 00s. The people on this site

    by generaljackcosmo

    make me laugh.
Personally, I like QT's movies--some more than others--and think this one looks pretty cool. I also like WWII movies, so it earns points there. And I, for one, never get tired of seeing Nazis get brutally killed, because, well, they're fucking NAZIS.
That said, I've been a fan of this site for a long time, even though it is most definitely--to put it mildly--a bit silly at times (see "this will make you scream 'FUCKING COOL!'"), and one thing that has struck me over the years is that the level of cynicism seems to have risen exponentially. Some would argue that's because 90% of what Hollywood churns out is pure shit. Well, newsflash: 90% of everything Hollywood has ever made is total shit...but we don't remember that. We just remember the good stuff. And there is just as much good stuff cranked out these days as in the 50s, 70s, 80s, etc. Hopefully this film will fall into that category.
What I really want to know is, what DO you people like? For example, what DO you consider to be a good action film made within, say, the last ten years? Because, if you have trouble naming just a few, I would suggest that you actually aren't a movie fan at all, and are probably wasting your time getting stressed out over nothing here. It really seems like a lot of the usual suspects around here never like anything except the idea that Avatar is going to fuck our eyeballs and some shit will cause total fucking destruction and be this year's Little Miss (insert attempt at being funny/ironic/sarcastic here).

"That would almost be as stupid as suggesting a 40-something Brad Pitt would be a lieutenant in the army. That's a job for someone 22-25 years old.
Not that I think Pitt's casting needs to be defended, BUT, if you are going to call something stupid you should probably make sure you know what you're talking about first. Otherwise, that sort of thing makes you look stupid. I am sure Pitt is not playing 40-something...my guess is that he is probably playing mid-30s, which is perfectly accurate historically. The average age of an American soldier in WWII was 26, and I am pretty sure that the avegage soldier was a grunt, not an officer. Thus, by 35 or so, Lt. is probably pretty appropriate. By Vietnam, the average age was only 19, so a 22-25 year old Lt. WOULD be realistic there. Here, a 22-25 year old would actually be a bit unrealistic. And explain to me again why it's so stupid that a GI would take a baseball bat with him? What if it has some special meaning for him, as this one obviously does, since it has a bunch of names carved into it?. Soldiers take all kinds of shit into battle...it helps them feel like they're still connected with their home. Just ask some.

Nobody is villifying Germans. They're villifying Nazis. You know why? They were fucking VILLAINS. There is no comparison, in any way, between WWII and our current situation in the Middle-East. None, not good or bad. It is a totally different situation in every conceivable way. The causes, the methods, the combat environment, the cultures involved, the methods of combat on all sides, the religious overtones, the diplomatic challenges...nothing is the same. It is apples and oranges. Maybe you and your friend Motoko Kusanagi are the ones who need to read a book or two.
For the record, I do not support the war in Iraq at all...I was against it from the get-go, and I certainly do not condone the US torturing, etc., but there is NO COMPARISON between American military policy in Iraq and Vietnam and the actions of the Nazis. I'm not saying we're some kind of b&w "good guys"...but we're not fucking Nazis. Get real, asshole.
I'll tell you what--when we march 12 million Sunni Muslims off to the gas chamber, then you get to call American soldiers Nazis, and not before.

If you'd read the script you'd realise that the Basterds don't really make much of a distinction between being a German, or being a Nazi. In fact it's pretty clear as far as they are concerned your one and the same, and that in their eyes you'll always be a Nazi forever.

It seems that comprehending analogies is beyond you, but I'll indulge you with a different one: -

Let's take those same happy go lucky Saudi zealots I mentioned earlier on and have them say causing terror in Gaza to the IDF in order to drive them out of the area and free the Palestinian people from the military occupation, ethnic cleansing and oppression they've been subjected to by the Israeli government for the last 40 years. Happier with that script?

    by generaljackcosmo

Well, I haven't read the script...I usually just prefer to see the movie, since that's why scripts are written--to be made into films and have actors, directors, etc., breathe life into them. I don't like to know what's going to happen before I spend my hard earned cash at the show.
And, no, analogies do not escape me, but shitty, nonsensical analogies don't really rev my engine either. While I agree that it has been a two way street in terms of abominable behavior with regard to the Israel/Palestine situation, I do not think you can really compare either the US in Iraq or Israel vis a vis the Palestine situation to the Nazis. The American people, for example, were lied to in order to sell the Iraq war--we were told that there was a connection between the government of Iraq and the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11, and that Saddam had a stockpile of WMDs. We were told that the evidence was a "slam dunk". Did I believe it? No. Neither did a lot of people. But the point is, the Bush administration at least knew they would have to LIE in order to get the majority of Americans to go along with their plans. The Nazis made no bones about the fact that they wanted to expand their power into an empire and conquer the world. They were lead to believe it was their destiny. And, buddy, I hate to tell you, but the majority of the German people at the time went right along with it. Am I saying they all knew about the Final Solution? Of course not. But they knew they were marching into other countries and kicking the shit out of them for no reason other than to expand their power. That's what happens when a country has hit rock bottom in terms of morale and a charismatic leader comes along and rouses them to believe they are entitled to greatness. Not knocking the German people--my great-grandparents on both sides were German immigrants--but that's what happened. And, credit where credit is due, Hitler was a tremendous public speaker.
As for comparing the Israeli government to the Nazis...well, if you don't understand the difference between American soldiers entering France to liberate it from the invading German army, and killing German soldiers there, and a Palestinian woman marching into an open air market with a bomb strapped to her chest, and pockets filled with rusty nails, ball bearings, and animal shit so she can kill as many civilians as possible...well, you are the one who has a problem with analogies, guy.
The Nazis were driven by greed, a lust for power, and a sense of entitlement. The Israelis are overly aggressive because they are surrounded on all sides by people who hate them simply because of their religion, and seek to wipe their country off the face of the Earth...and we know that to be true, because that's what they (Israel's enemies) say. Do you really think that if Israel gave all its land back to the Palestinians that Muslims would stop hating Jews, and vice versa? Because, I mean, they all got along so well before Israel was around...
Look, the bottom line is, I fucking hate it when idiots go off half-cocked trying to make some point and compare shit to Nazi Germany. America is not like the Nazis. Israel is not like the Nazis. Neither is Iran, or the so-called "Islamo-fascists". Not even the modern Republican party, which borrows a TON of psychology from Nazi rhetoric, is really anything like the Nazis.
Only the Nazis are like the Nazis, so stop comparing apples to oranges.

Things that have changed the world for the better; things that I and the vast majority of my countrymen have every right to be extremely proud of. by kadayi

Actually you don't get analogies at all it seems. The point is not about the location or the people involved it's about the manner of the operation. If our heroes were a bunch of blood thirsty Arabs it's unlikely people would be cheering them on, yet somehow we are supposed to cheer on as bunch or American GIs torturing, disfiguring and murdering captive German soldiers, because 'hey they're Nazis, they deserve it!!!'. As wookie rightly pointed out the whole premise of the film is one of righteous sadism. 'We're just giving them what they deserve' therefore it's acceptable.

How you can label the German people as all wholly complicit in the atrocities of WW2 (and therefore wholly accountable) whist at the same time deny any such complicity by the American public under the guise of naivety in this day and age of global media is frankly hilarious tbh. If you had any deep political understanding beyond what Fox News tells you to think, you'd of been well aware that Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda were ideologically poles apart in terms of world view. westernised despot Vs religious extremists, and it never ever remotely made any sense whatsoever that either would be involved with the other outside of a few rabid Neocon think tanks.

Also please spare us the tub thumping about how goddamn wonderful the US of Haliburton is, because quite frankly the evidence to the contrary is overwhelming.

Hitler managed to convince the German people to support his policies through a lot of propaganda, appeals to patriotism and orchestrated false flag operations (sounds awfully familiar doesn't it), and it was a lot easier to get away with that sort of thing 60 + years ago because there wasn't the depth or diversity of media coverage as there is today. The arguments of utter complicity don't hold up under actual scrutiny. Also it has to be said that complicity through ignorance holds up a lot better than complicity through genertal apathy, such as with your commentary on the invasion of Iraq. "Yeah we knew it was a crock of shit, but we sat on the sidelines and let the government do it anyway" good going.

And no, there is nothing wrong with enjoying the brutal murder of Nazis on film. As opposed to whitewashed shit like "The Reader".

    What next Sgt?

So as well as advocating the brutal murder of German captives, what else floats your boat? Maybe beating and torturing people who you suspect 'might' be terrorists and keeping them imprisoned without trial indefinitely I suppose?

Human rights are for pussies after all, Might is Right no?

Seriously, back under the bridge with you Sgt. The very fact that you point out the helplessness of the individual Vs the modern political machine should be reason enough to comprehend that not everyone during WW II was wholly complicit with what occurred, so to hold them responsible for actions beyond their person is frankly ridiculous. WW II ended 64 years ago, anyone who had a real axe to grind is either dead or close to the door, and severely doubt any of them post on this site. Why continue to make meal out of old bones, what great purpose does it serve?

    @Blue_Demon

I say jump, they say how high.
