A real Judge Dredd Movie should look like this!

Published at:  Feb 20, 2009 10:48:42 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Dammit. I really really want a great Judge Dredd movie. And it seems that at least the artist behind the pieces linked below, Jock (The Losers, Hellblazer, 2000AD), wants to have a great Judge Dredd movie. PLEASE COME TO BE! PLEASE!

Hi Guys,

During my usual surf around the net for inspiration from my fellow concept artists, I found this link and realized no one from your site had mentioned this news yet.

By the look of the recent release of this artwork, the rumored new Judge Dredd movie just became a little more than a rumor and is definitely not dead in the water (yet).

Hope it’s useful.

Worse catchphrase ever!!I really, really hope that this Dredd movie is good - this concept art is good quality 2000 AD style stuff and to be honest that's the only design references you need. The thirty + years of 2000 AD.A lot of people want to see Judge Death but for a first Dredd movie I would almost go down the Dirty Harry route - Dredd trying to catch a sniper, that way his investigations and the other aspects of being a Judge in Mega City will give plenty of time for audiences to get acquainted with Mega City One.Save the continuity heavy stuff for the potential second film - oh, and get Neil Marshall to direct and Mark Strong as Dredd

we DO need a good judge dredd movie. grab the production designers from the 5th Element. let some young but capable dickhead like JJ Abrams direct it. cast Justin Theroux... and you will have a really cool piece of shit to watch.

Remember when Sly was looking at Drago's navel in Rocky? THAT'S Dredd! 6'10" plus 3 inches of boot about to fly up your ass! Americans just DON'T get it. Pitch black judge, jury, and executioner, executioner, executioner. No %$#@# comic sidekick...and wacky one-liners. Schneider is the FIRST person he would have JUDGED...suckaz!!

    by divhour

I liked elements of the old Danny Cannon version. AND I heard Stallone did want to keep the helmet on. The studio wouldn't let him. If that's the case... Sly will always have a place in my heart. It'll unfortunately probably never live up to the comic.

    by righteousbrother

It looks alsmost EXACTLY like the art from the Stallone film.

Just look at the work of Brian Bolland, Mike Mahon, and Carlos Ezquerra, for a Judge Dredd movie, respect the source material - give us a story about either the cursed earth, the judge child quest, Block war, the day the law died or any of the other classics, it can't be that difficult can it? That artwork was absolutely horrendous, just pick up some old 2000 ad's its all there for you.

it needs black humour, and a british sensibility - we don't need a name actor to play Dredd - just some big buy, with a big chin and lots of attitude. I want to see muties, fatties, munce, boinngg (r) Otto Sump, Pug Ugly and the Bugglies - ah man there's so much good shit they could use.

I'm getting to old for this

    by hewliganshaircut

As I was there on that first day, buying the first episode of 2000AD (and yes, 1 week later, seeing Dredd for the first time) I feel as though I need to splurge my guts up about what I think about Dredd, the Dredd movie, and how it's affected me through live... It's affected me by not watching Rob Schneider films ever again!!..... SEriously, Dredd is a hard sell for the movie going public. He's a facist, living in a police state. He is a hero, but a hero of a broken system.... But boy, you gotta love him... What should they do to make the film work? Have the helmet stay on - check... Have catchprases from the comic, not made up for the film. "I am the Law!" - Yes... "I knew you'd say that" - Fuck right off no.... Have more of the actual judging - I enjoyed the sequence in the film where Dredd destroys the car for a parking offence... And like the small montage in Robocop of him 'dispensing justice', i think 5 minutes given up to him being the street judge that he is would ground him in what he does....... Judge Death - is a contender...... Judge Child - One of my favourites but probably too 'off worldy'... Judge Anderson - Yeah, if we have Death in..... Knowledge that his is a clone - Yes please - that defines who he is. Don't have it as some stupid 'secret' that the whole film revolves around.... Rico - Nope, been done, don't go back..... Judge Giant - Yup...... But I'm thinking that the first 3rd of the film is Dredd dispensing justice and solving various crimes (yes, by killing people) with an 'unknown killer' picking off many people in the background - Reveal "Hello, My name is Deaaath!!!" - Big fight for the middle, Hello, it's Anderson, captured in my head - oops, he's out again and look, his fellow Dark Judges have turned up... "Look into the Fist of Dredd!!"..... The end (no fucking final kiss with Anderson at the end please - in fact NO relationship with any female - you don't have to show that he's not gay... He's a fucking cop!).... But, just to finish (as this is the longest post i've done on this site)... Can I just say, the first 10 minutes of the Danny Cannon Judge Dredd movie... I loved it.. Visually, stunning and reflected the comic perfectly (even with Robs rat face staring back at me)... Even Dredd on his bike, even "These Buildings are under arrest".... But as soon as his helmet was off... That was the beginning of the end.... So endeth the sermon from Hewligans Haircut...

    Dredd movie trilogy...

    by biggusdickus

Here's how you do it:First movie - origin of the judges, then show the city and show how some routine crimes get handled (Whitey & Devil's Island, jimping & the bank robbery takedown?) Show the weirdness (alien pets, the undercity, ape-gangs, face change parlours, Otto Sump, fatties, sky surfers, boing, call-me-Kenneth, etc, etc.) Show us PSI Div briefly (and a hot as fuck Anderson) and basically give us two hours of future crime and law enforcement in Dredd's world. Dazzle us.For the second movie, having set up MC1 and PSI Div, it's gotta be Judge Death and the gang. Be brutal. full scale sci-fi/horror crossover. Rack the body count up to the ceiling! To close the trilogy - bigger and better. Tale your pick. There's Oz (how cool would a full-on supersurf be?), or the Judge Child quest, or maybe go for a character piece like The Pit (Isla Fisher for DeMarco) but I would suggest The Cursed Earth for all round awesomeness.Man, I'm stoked already. When does the first one open?

    My Trilogy..

    by righteousbrother

I’d have the trilogy like this, first movie as Biggus Dickus describes, an hour or so of crime but the second half of the movie ending with a Block War and the capture of Orlok – who it turns out is a Sov Blok spy. The movie ends with all the the sovs missiles heading toward Mega City One.

Second movie would be the dark one with a full one war between Mega City One and the Sov Block – complete with Dredd killing Chief Judge Griffin live on TV and then turning the gun on himself (one of my favorite Dredd moments ever!!)

Third Movie – The Cursed Earth. Or Judge Death

    Casting?

    by biggusdickus

All casting to be cheap. Fuck big names. Let this movie create stars of the future, rather than wasting it's budget on A and B list eye-candy. Here we go, off the top of my head:Anderson - Attractive blonde with tons of attitude and sarcasm Don't pick a flavour-of-the-month totty and dye her hair. We've seen Jessica wossname as Sue Storm and we weren't impressed. Carey Mulligan, please!Giant - young black straight-arrow. No wisecracks. Give him as much prescence as Dredd and don't insult the black community by casting a wise-ass. Think Tim Russ playing Tuvok, but a bit less vulcan.DeMarco - Isla Fisher playing straight. If she can't handle that, another unknown.Hershey - generic ice-maiden brunette with Cleopatra hair. Saffron Burrows, maybe?Chief Judge McGruder - Kate Mulgrew - she could do with the payslip.Over to you, fanboys...

    50/50 Chance

    by arcangel2020

I am giving this Reboot a 50/50 chance of being either decent to pretty damn good..IF...the storyline, casting, directing and S/FX are done right...I know! I know!! That maybe TO much for the Studio Exec's to handle right?
I would love to see a Dredd adaptation that does the Comic and the fans of the series justice!
Get someone to direct like say...Zach Snyder, Robert Rodriguez..just to mention a few whom I think would do a good job.
Have a good S/FX house do the work and for god's sakes!! Get a new cast of never heard of's/new talent to star in the Movie!!
Obviously what went wrong with the '95 version was the butchered hack job of a movie..miscasting Dredd (Hey, I like Stallone, but he was awful as Dredd!), having hack actor Armand Assante in it, Rob Schnieder for comic reliief..UGH!! Dredd is NOT supposed to be funny!
So, you see...the concept art looks interesting, but...until I hear more concrete info, more concept art and announcement of a cast and maybe some on set shots?
I am skeptical of there ever being a good Dredd movie being made

    Mr. Krabs as Dredd...

    by schreck

Clancy Brown has been mentioned before (as far back as the eighties), but damn if he wouldn't be great. Kick-ass voice and probably not too vain to leave the helmet on. Meanwhile, whereas I dig this artwork it doesn't really stand out from the '95 flick. Not that that's bad; the only thing that movie got right was the look. BTW-Is anyone else sick of people accusing Dredd of being a Robocop knock-off? That's my concern for any film version of the Judge, that folks will let fly with that incorrect assessment.

    Go with Judge Death...

    by rameses

Dredd's a hard character to side with. He's meant to be so tough and stern that it's funny{something that went over Sly's head in the first movie}So two hours of him ,dishing out justice to citizens is going to be uninvolving. To work as a hero , Dredd really needs a threat so bad and apocolyptic that he comes across as a saviour.Judge Death bringing justice to Mega city one with thousands dying , would fit the bill.Plus it brings in Judge Anderson , adding a bit of sex and humour to the proceedings.Other than that ,the Cursed Earth story would be cool .A sort of dirty dozen affair that whitles the heroes down as it goes , just leaving Dredd on foot to complete the journey.Dinosaurs , Macdonalds clowns and rotting war robots. Its got it all.

The problem with the movie wasn't...

    by anakinsdiapers

...the designs nor art direction - those were spot on. The problem was the film didn't realize that Mega-city one is as much a character as the humans were, and although Dredd is the protagonist, in narrative he's the villian. He's an uncompromising fascist officer of a broken system. Judge Dredd was always a black social satire. a lot of the laws are totally bat-shit ridiculous. Sugar is an illegal substance. Meat is also. In one comic Dredd threw an old woman in the iso-cubes for "walking against the crowd". The movie should have been a "day in the life" kind of scenario with an overreaching plot coming together at the end...and no, the bloody helmet should never come off.

    by dc films

Too shiny and solid. The city background is too clean and colorful - Judge Dredd's look is very different to Bladerunner. Needs to be gritty and grainy - leaving plenty of silver on the film when processing, like Three Kings. Needs to lean closer to Mad Max - this looks just like the last movie. And how about Micky Rourke as Dredd?

    by hint_of_smegma

Titus Pullo owns you all. You all know it too. But seriously, that scene of him in Rome, gaming at a table - discovers a cheat and brutally and suddenly stabs him through the throat? His profile as he did it? THAT was Dredd, guys and gals. Dredd punching Mortis right through the portcullis....He's the right physique, the right jaw, he's not exactly a big star and he can act, dammit. Second choice, Kevin McKidd. Both have done superb work, both would be perfect for Dredd.

    by hint_of_smegma

Zack Snyder's currently laughing at the egg dripping off the naysayers faces right now. It'll be the same with Dredd. It's translatable...it just needs the right elements to come together. Right director, right production company, right actors, right writers. Yeah, Watchmen might turn out to be lightening in a bottle, but Dredd is no way near as hard to translate. It can be done. I just hope it is because a great Dredd movie would be, well, a great Dredd movie.

Agree with the above posters, ther are a few folks that could play Dredd right. Ray Stephenson would be dead fucking nuts on. Clancy Brown, 10 years ago yeah and I think he could still pull it off. Mickey Rourke. Damn, you know that might work. Ron Perlman? Don't think anyone has mentioned him but I'll give that a "hell yeah."As for the plots - Cursed Earth was always my favourite right from when I first read the source material about 33 years back when I picked up Roger Zelaznys "Damnation Alley."

This stuff's been floating around since the start of the year and it's emphatically not official concept art. It's just a few images jock knocked up and posted on a couple of 2000AD forums: http://tinyurl.com/ced3e4

I'd love to see a decent new Dredd film but, in the event it never happens, we'll always have Robocop which pretty much nailed the attitude and tone of best Dredd stories.

Eh?! You seem to have missed the point completely. I agree the character isn't meant to be funny but it's the satire and black humour that makes the stories such fun. Well that, the brutal violence, great writing and sometimes sublime art.

    Hardware

    by ominus

for whoever didnt know, there is an unofficial, lets say, prequel of the judge dredd movie.
its called Hardware, its a scifi b-movie set in a dystopian future, and its about a menacing army robot, found in a wastelnad (which is in fact the cursed earth),by a scavenger, which robot tries to kill the scavengers girlfriend.
the producer of the movie was accused by some 2000ad comic writers, that the movies story was stolen from one of their comic stories.they went on court, and the comic writers were justified.
you can find more info about the movie here: http://tinyurl.com/6aosox

    About the first Judge Dredd

    by ominus

visually it was totally respectful to the comic.Mega city 1,the cursed earth, the suits, the abc warrior, the angel family, etc were all artistically well done.
the problem was ofcourse that the Hollywood in order to make the film commercial they bastardized it.
i love sly but he was miscasted for this role.ofc there is the removal of helmet and the motive of the director to humanise the protagonist.Dredd even kissed the girl at the end of the movie.there was schneiber as the terrible comic sidekick, the meaningless story and the absence of the comics dark humour and political/social satire.
as someone else mentioned above,MC1 was the equal protagonist of the comic,as Dredd was.it wasnt just a background for his stories,it WAS his city.
at last, what personally bothered me a lot,was the talking lawgiver.
it was cool, but really did it have to give vocal aknowledge of Dredd;s commands? were the movie makes so sure that the audience is that stupid, that they wouldn understand when the gun is changing its firing mode? jesus.
anyway i hope the new movie will be great and more faithful to the comic/character.its one of the remakes/adaptation i die to watch in the big screen.but even if its going to be crap too,we still have robocop.

    Helmet

    by corpseride

He just didn't remove it. Or at least, they never showed it, unless something was blocking the view or whatever. There is a fairly famous bit it one of the early stories showing him in the bath, still wearing his helmet. As for not being human, he is - but specifically, he is a clone, bred for service. Imagine a country ruled by an autocrat, where the police are clones of him and his personal guard. Even after the autocrat dies, their are clones of him in the police force... that's Dredd.

and if he wasnt wearing it,there was always something that blocked the view of his face.yeah i do remember the bit when having a shower with his helmet still on.
there is also a story from the Necropolis arc, were dredd wasnt wearing the helmet and u could see his face.but his face was so burned out (because of the sisters of death magic),that u could only see more bones of his skull, rather than flesh on it.
and there is a reason that we never see his face.because by seeing his face, the law is personified, thus he stops being THE LAW.he becomes just a man who enforces the law.
