Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a huge LOSER...

Published at:  Feb 20, 2009 10:49:38 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Me saying I'm not familiar with this comic isn't too much of a surprise. The only current comics I tend to keep regular on are Eric Powell's THE GOON and Robert Kirkman's WALKING DEAD (thanks for ending, Y: THE LAST MAN). I'm due a trip to Austin Books. I'm even at least 3 or 4 issues behind on those two and I want to pick up the new Scott Pilgrim.

Anyway, the news is Vertigo's comic THE LOSERS, written by Andy Diggle and illustrated mainly by Jock (2000AD), is coming to the big screen... well, that's not even the news. I'm pretty sure that's been out, but the star is newly known thanks to The Hollywood Reporter. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, soon to disgust us all as The Comedian in WATCHMEN has nabbed the lead, Clay. Clay's the leader of a special forces team out for vengeance after being left for dead by their handler. And it looks like they don't like the CIA very much, either.

Anyway, thems what's new. Sylvain White (STOMP THE YARD, and attachments to Frank Miller's RONIN and CASTLEVANIA) will direct for Warner Bros and Silver Pictures.

I'll give the first graphic novel a flip-through when I make it up to the comic book store sometime next week and see if it grabs me. Any fans of the material out there with thoughts on this?

    Loser is amazing!

    by zakari paolon

Seriously, get all volumes (there's 4 or 5) and read them, you can't possibly go wrong!
As a comic book, it reads like the absolute perfect 80s action movie. Please let them not fuck this up...

Why do people call it a graphic novel...

    by mattparker

... when the thing is NOT a graphic novel? It was a monthly series collected in paperbacks. For Eisner's sake, dudes! BTW, Watchmen is also NOT a graphic novel. Jesus! (The Killing Joke? Yep. Graphic novel).

    by blindambition238

.... Weapon XI, the guy in red pants doing fancy spin kicks towards Logan.

That martial artist they hired and listed on the cast list under that role is just the action double for Reynolds/ red herring.

Imagine the best action movie ever in comic book form. Not sold on the director, but if Morgan can do the Comedian, he should do well as Clay.

He was cool in Greys and rocks out in Supernatural. Always figured be was meant for bigger things. One to watch. On a completely unrelated geek note. He's playing a Clay? Didn't his Supernatural son just play a Clay in Friday The 13th!?!? Yeah. Umm...not caring anymore.

    by brattyben

I totally agree with you on the whole graphic novel/TPB thing. I HATE everythime a Watchmen trailer comes on, and it heralds it as the greatest graphic novel, blah blah. To me, it's more a trade paperback, since it was a twelve issue series that was afterword collected. It infuriates me.

it's a "graphic novel" if it has a beginning and an end

    by ian216a

... everything else in just semantics. I know Alan Moore considers Watchmen to be a novel, of 12 chapters. Are Bleak House and Great Expectations less than novels just because they were serialised first? Nope.

    Jeffery Dean Morgan is dead

    by superfleish76

at least he always seems to play dead characters in the few things I've seen him in...Grey's Anatomy...died, and apparently is a ghost now? I don't watch, but my girl does. Weeds...Nancy's dead husband. Watchmen...(spoiler)the Comedian dies in the beginning. It will be nice for him to get more non-dead work...until the inevitable Weekend at Bernie's remake.

I'll tell you right now, if they don't let Andy Diggle be involved and let Jock do the poster, they screwed up. I know neither of them created the book, but man did they do it justice. Freaking awesome.

And LOSERS is fuckin' awesome; you should definitely check it out if you haven't by now. Vertigo Comics in general is awesome, and is pretty keeping the medium of comics legit on its lonesome, besides Marvel Illustrated. Death to superheroes - long live real comics.
