Benton & Lewis To Join Carter, Hathaway and Ross On ER??

Published at:  Feb 19, 2009 10:31:08 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

The East Coast just saw John Carter return to “ER,” and the episode marking the event concluded with a promo touting the return of Sherry Stringfield as Susan Lewis, Eriq LaSalle as Peter Benton, Maura Tierney as Abby Lockhart and Julianna Margulies as Carol Hathaway.

While LaSalle directed last week’s “ER,” this is the first I’m hearing of him returning to the role of Benton, and of Stringfield returning to the role of Lewis.

The promo also represents, I believe, NBC’s first acknowledgement that Margulies will be back as Hathaway.

It’s an open secret that George Clooney will also be back as Doug Ross, though his face was not one featured in tonight’s promo.

“ER” ends its 15-season run on NBC April 2.

NBC already released the episode synopsis for 15.19(03/12). Carter gets a surprise visit from an old friend (guest star Eriq La Salle) while waiting for his surgery.

Benton's return is mentioned in NBC's press release for episode 19 (http://tinyurl.com/d8n4n5), and Stringfield's return was reported by TV Guide last week (http://tinyurl.com/bphs7k).

    Carter's back!

    by oisin5199

If any character could be the reason for everyone else coming back, it's him. (Or SPOILERS? Him dying). Thankfully Chuny won't be the only one recognizing the old guard. Wally Shawn was indefatigable (inconceivable!) as always tonight. And yes, the one from 2 weeks ago with Bill Macy was just amazing. One of the best hours of television I've seen. Reached the heart of the show like few episodes do. With only a few misses, ER is mostly hitting it out of the park this season.

    ER Needed Season Six

    by archangel7883

If only so we could have that perfect, gut-wrenching episode that was "All In the Family." That was top-tier, Grade A+ writing, acting and directing. Also, while this season has been only average like the last eight seasons, there have been two standout moments: First, when Abby leaves in "The Book of Abby" and Nurse Haleh shows her something the hospital uses to remember people gone by... unexpectedly perfect. Low key, and just just amazingly right. If you can find that clip (toward the end of the episode) watch it. You'll thank me. Also, the ten minutes of Mark Green's flashback in "Heal Thyself" WAS pretty damned good.

Extra special geek points if you can name the movie and the connection to "Lost".
Also, more geek points if you can name the OTHER medical show, also set in the same city, that started the exact same night as "ER" fifteen years ago.

    by blanket-man

Well, he did spend a lot of time in Africa, but the machine clearly says "Dialysis" on it (do AIDS patients normally undergo dialysis?). I'm thinking he's developed some sort of kidney infection. He'll need a donor, and of course the only perfect match in the country will be one DR. DOUGLAS ROSS, who will return to donate a kidney to the young(er) Doc Carter. Ross dies during surgery, Clooney wins an Emmy for his heartbreaking return, and the show and its viewers are finally put out of their misery.

AIDS might still be the cause. He could be on dialysis because his kidneys are failing due to his immune system breaking down from AIDS. Hope that's not the case. As depressing as the show has been the past few years, I really wish they would give everyone a frakkin' happy ending at this point. Viewers are bummed out enough as it is, with the economy and job losses.

    by blanket-man

Good point, and a logical one. And I whole-heartedly agree that the writers need to end Carter's story on a positive note, dammit! County General must have the highest freakin' mortality rate among its doctors of any place in the country! Greene, Lucy, Romano - I know *I* haven't seen three co-workers die over the past 15 years. [And those are just the first three on ER casualties that come to mind! Have I forgotten any?]

Pratt dies. Omar Epps' character died one season, after Beton made life hard on him, iirc. Didn't whatshername, pegleg's girlfriend, the firefighter/emt die also? Yeah, getting a job/internship/whatever at County is kind of like a death sentence.

I seem to remember Gloria Reuben's character being HIV positive (I think...) but can't remember the context of her departure.

Another thing about ER, how many had successful childbirths? Think of how many staff members in particular had something go terribly wrong in delivery.

I'll still never forget the Lucy episode, that was some sad shit.

    btw, the promos

    by oisin5199

often have very little to do with the show. For years, the network has tried to oversell the drama, and the actual episodes hardly ever match the tone of those annoying promos, thankfully. One of the reasons I initially found ER interesting was how the writing underplays its 'climactic' moments. The rhythms and pacing of an episode are very different from the other shows I watch. It's much more naturalistic.

    TONIGHT, AN ER EVENT...

    by steve young

((Somber Piano Music)) Tonight, an ER Event... the return of Dr. Carter... ((Flashing various actors' faces)) "and you won't BELIEVE what happens next..." ((Flashes of: helicopter crashing into the building. Ambulance crashing into the ER room during an operation. Patient holding a gun to a surgeon's head)) BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! ...BEEEEEEEEEEE... "OH MY GOD! ((QUICK CUT TO BLACK)) ((PAUSE)) ((FANCY COMPUTER-GRAPHIC ER TITLE SCREEN))... I know this show has its moments, but this might as well be a horror series about a cursed hospital. Everyone gets a disease, dies in some horrific accident, or flees for higher pastures.

I really think the show died with Dr. Greene. Steve Young is right...I bet the hospital is cursed...or Dr. Greene's old stethoscope is cursed...or better still, the 3rd floor vending machine! Cursed, like an object from Friday the 13th: The Series.
