No Rourke For IRON MAN 2?? Seems To Be The Case...

Published at:  Feb 18, 2009 5:51:55 PM CST

Merrick here...

A while back, we heard that Mickey Rourke was offered a lowball amount to appear in a significant role in IRON MAN 2 (details HERE).

Now, it seems, he'll likely not be in the film at all.

"Right now, we're not doing Iron Man 2," Rourke told us grimly.

...says THIS ARTICLE in New York magazine.

The last I heard, Samuel L. Jackson hasn't resolved his negotiation with Marvel either - meaning Nick Fury will either be played by someone else in the movie, or removed from the film altogether.

    by pseudo

Seems to me that Marvel Studios trying to do things on the cheap and that's going to come back and bite them in the ass. If this keeps up we'll likely end up with a sequel that, despite the best intentions of the director, is more like The Punisher reboot in terms of quality. Too bad, they were off to a good start.
My personal opinion is that re-casting Samuel Jackson would pretty much put the nail in the coffin for a lot of the fans who were excited to see him in the first film.

Who cares? As long as the story is good and the action is fun to watch. There are a million actors out there and most of them will gladly be in a huge blockbuster, with all its exposure and possibility for sequels, and do it for a "lowball" amount (which, by the way, is most likely STILL in the hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars).

    Good for Rourke

    by arcadiands

He's earned back a lot of street cred with The Wrestler and doesn't need to risk a potential Street Fighter to take it all away again. He needs to be patient, save his money, and wait for the next art-house low-expectation movie to further solidify his comeback. The concrete is still wet - he needs to let it cure.
As for Marvel movies, the entire notion behind taking all these Batman Begins styled "heroes-in-our-world" movies and have them culminate in an Avengers movie, is just absurd. The Avengers are the pinnacle of 'heroes who couldn't possibly exist in our world' as far as comic books go. You have a guy in a flying metal suit, a mythological diety, a guy who is half insect, a wartime propaganda poster-boy, and correct me if Im wrong but wasn't Namor the Super Merman an Avenger at one time or another?
regardless of that last questional member, its a cast of Hanna-Barbara quality heroes. It is not even POSSIBLE to make a serious movie with a NORDIC GOD as part of the cast. Thor being real opens the door for every mythological pantheon and then what you have is Clash of the Titans in really gay rainbow colored costumes.
Sorry - the guy who greenlit this idea for a movie should never work in the movie industry again.

Marvel are afraid to spend money

    by v'shael

in order to make money. Some fucktard in a suit has told them they can cut corners, and still make a billion. And like the brain-donors that they are, Marvel have believed it.

They have forgotten the lessons of the past, which gave us things like David Hasslehoff, agent of Shield. And a badly accented Swedish Thor. And johnny-nobody playing Captain America.

Fuck you Marvel. You had your chance to make 3 billion out of your collective movie franchises in the next 4 years. Now you'll be lucky to make 300,000.

Remember, in this day and age of the interweb and "spies" we are privy to every little nook, cranny, dotted "i" and crossed "t" to every movie being made. Hell, there is even a feature on this site devoted ENTIRELY to the sale of scripts! Not the making of the movie, but the SALE of a script! There are all kinds of things that happen when making a movie that are little setbacks, just the nature of the beast. The only thing that really matters is when our butts are in the seat and the movie is thrown on the screen (in my case, my TV screen).

Thor could also be the guy who ended up getting the powers of Thor through Mjolnir. I can't remember the guy's name, nor do I feel like looking it up, but it'd be easier to explain that somehow the hammer is mystical and gives the regular guy some powers of Thor.

As far as Namor goes, yeah, he was part of the Avengers, but I doubt they're going with him. They'll more likely use the Hulk, since Tony Stark already made mention of it to the General in the last movie.

I don't think Cap America is that bad of an idea, especially since they also touched on the Super Soldier Serum in the Hulk as well. We saw what Blonsky could do on it before he got Hulk blood in him.

I just opened a dispute on Paypal against Chris Mahan, the lowlife brother of Shane Mahan, who's now pretty much the chief of the new Winston studios (now named Legacy Effects), who was also interviewed on here by Quint after Winston died. Mahan worked on all the famous Winston creations and movies, he also was the physical suit effects supervisor on Iron Man. His lesser known brother Chris and his wife Dione were given 2 exquisite hand-painted ltd. edition figures from Small Soldiers as a gift by good 'ole Stan himself that were made in his studio. Because money was tight and bills had to be paid, last month they tried to auction them through eBay. I won, but didn't meet the reserve price. Chris and Dione did want to sell me the figures, but preferred to make the sale outside of eBay so high eBay fees could be avoided, so, I, big fuckin' stupid dumbass send them $560 last month. Well, they never sent the items, avoided all my mails and now I'm at the mercy of Paypal. What this has to do with Rourke ? Nothing. Saw the name Iron Man, made the connection with the Mahan's and just wanted to ventilate my fuckin anger I guess, goddamned !!!

This is all bullshit. Rourke and his people know that in exchange for taking a huge paycut he'll get some points on the back end, which will turn out to be significant since this movie will make LOADS of cash. This is all about ego and image, and not about reality. Are Marvel cocksuckers? Of course they are, they wear suits for a living. How much money does a movie have to make...

    by soylentmean

before the producers realize that adding high profile and talented actors to the sequel will not only guarantee a higher initial box office run but even greater DVD sales?

I think I read somewhere that the lowball figure offered to Rourke was $250,000. Now, most of us on here would do a hell of a lot for that kind of dough, but in Hollywood that's pretty much a slap in the face and a kick to pride cajones.

So, Paramount, cough up the dough, keep Rourke involved, and keep fanboy anticipation high.

I'm pretty sure when Iron Man 2 gets released that it will break a shitload of box office records. I'm not sure if it will have the legs to give The Dark Knight a run for its money, but given how many people I know actually preferred Iron Man over The Dark Knight, well I dunno.

It's gonna be hard enough for people to swallow Don Cheadle (a fine actor in his own right) as Rhodey in the sequel, seeing that the role was originally played by Terrence Howard.

And as far as I'm concerned they should spend at least half their budget insuring that Sam (the motherfuckin' man) Jackson reprises his post credit role as Nick Fury. Jackson can't get paid enough!

Fuck that, there are many good actors who could contribute a good role to IM2. Quit being such haters and try a little patience; wait for a product before you critique a product...assholes.

So they gave hime what he considered a "lowball" offer (which, by the way, would be a great offer to people who'd been living in the real world at any point). Maybe, just MAYBE they'd rather have the money show up on screen. You know, sink it into effects, sets, locations, etc, rather than blow the entire budget on a couple actors.
There are plenty of other actors they can get to play the part.

Rourke is notoriously difficult to work with, and frankly he's not worth it. Plus if he is trying to rebuild his career, turning down a role in IM2 is a move in the wrong direction. But look, it has Favreau directing, it has RDJ and it has fucking Sam Rockwell who I would much rather have then Rourke who I could see chewing scenery in a bad way. There are plenty of other options, the movie will be fine. Favreau has proven he knows exactly what he is doing, he got Downey, the guy who made the movie what it is and he had to fight to get him. He'll choose his battles.

$250k to costar in a movie that will make hundreds of millions worldwide? That's a very low offer, regardless of the points he might get at the back end (besides, aren't points disfavored because studio accountants always find a way to claim that a movie "lost money"?). Stars typically make millions in base pay on films like this.

The ONLY thing officially "gone" from the first flick is Howard. The two most important people, RDJ and Favreau, are on board, and so is Paltrow, who is right behind them in order of importance, IMO. Rourke's going to find that he needs IM2 more than IM2 needs him. Let's see who officially gets cast before damning this movie to X3 status... I still have hope that Sam Jackson will ultimately be signed - the guy has never turned down a movie before, has he? :)

    by jor-el23

But the alleged 6 figure offer did seem very low. I know it's a lot of money but The Wrestler isn't his first major film in a decade. Once Upon a Time, Man on Fire, Domino, Sin City...big movies, sizable roles...the guy is looking less and less like a wild card.

    by bob cryptonight

His performance in THE WRESTLER is certainly not Oscar worthy. Sure, he did a good job in a heavily cliched movie--but he has always been a pretty good actor. I personally see NO parallels between his career and the movie's character, except for the fact that they're both involved in uneventful events. In the movie, his character's so-called "comeback" or chance for one more moment of glory is very silly. The fact is that Rourke, these days, can really only count on the "freak" roles because he has fucked up his appearance. I mean, if by landing a villain role in IRON MAN he could make some good money, fine. But he's still on the road to having Richard Lynch's career.

250 Thousand dollars for a movie that is probably going to make half a billion dollars world wide. Actors that got cast as villains got paid way more than that two decades ago. Marvel is seriously fucking things up. There is no way in hell they will get a name actor with that kind of a low fee so, why are they trying. Iron-Man is not an Indie flim so, actors expect to get paid.

I knew that Samuel Jackson would not be greedy and ask for 25 million to play the part. They probably offered Jackson a few thousand also.

Yeah, I hear ya. But it's funny how Mickey Rourke is all of a sudden the be-all-and-all of movies. He was a joke two years ago now he is a great actor. OH NO! Mickey won't be in Iron Man 2?!?!? It's going to suck! And come on, Sam Jackson has an iffy track record at best. We all love him because... well... he's Sam Jackson. But are YOU saying that if an actor gets a lot of money for a movie, he is a good actor? Or that all actors that get tens of millions a movie are worth it? My point was only that the star of the movie is Downy as IRON MAN. There are lots of great actors that would love to be in an IRON MAN movie. Just because it may not be Jackson and Rourke doesn't mean the movie has no legs.

    What does Rourke bring?

by my friends call me killjoy

except a lot of baggage, a huge ego, and a face that looks like hamburger. The Wrestler was good, but there are other very good actors out there that would be willing to take the back end to be in Iron Man 2.
That's what we're talking about here. Marvel wants to put every dollar they can into the production, not the actor's salaries. Other "A" list actors take the back end all the time to get the best product up on screen. I'd say Rourke is the greedy one, but you know what...I don't blame him. His third set of 15 minutes will be up soon and he should go for the coin. There's a better match for this film. Best wishes, Mickey.
As for Terrance Howard, that's a shame, but the film can overcome it. Downey is the real star. I'd love to see him back as Rhodes, but only because of continuity.
Sam Jackson is, a very talented actor, but let's face it...he's been, coasting for a while. Someone needs to sit him down and tell him that before it's too late. He just doesn't care anymore.

Do we know how much these actors are actually asking for?Let's face it - if these guys are asking for vain glorious amounts of money on the strength of how much Iron Man made should Marvel Studios, as a business, just completely bend over and pay them? This is of course the problem with trying to attract big names for your roles - the cost can start getting phenomonal and if the film has a budget and say a large percentage of that is taken by actors then you end up with deficits in other regions of the film - effects etc (and don't anyone say it's the acting and story that counts because it is - but if they are supported by shitty effects the film will be a laughing stock).Of course I want to see the very best people for the roles but when actors say low ball or low wages the biggest names are talking more than many / most of us will make in our working lives.

You're right. I remember back in the early 80s when I first started reading comics, they were like 35 or 40 cents. The price went up quickly, and by the time I got out of high school and more or less stopped collecting, a single standard issue was like $1.25. I love comics and I'd still be reading them but for the prices. They're NOT worth it. It's NOT good value. I'd even subscribe to a couple titles for my kids, but again the prices are outrageous. Go to the Marvel website and check. A year of any Spidey title will cost you more than any magazine subscription. For a COMIC. Full of ADVERTISEMENTS.

You guys build up your expectations so high that you are destined to hate it just from Pavlovian response. Relax.

    shitty Spider-man films? LMAO

    by sirbiatchreturns

has the kool-aid finally run out? I've been saying that Spiderman 2 and 3 are shit for years but fanboys always wanted to assault me. So now the truth comes out?

anyway, to get this post back on track, I have to say that I loved Iron Man. Let Marvel do whatever it takes to get a second quality film. that's all.

    You guys are seriously noobs

    by spawnofachilles

losing Mickey Rourke means the movie will suck? Give me a fucking break...get your heads out of your fucking asses. Sam Jackson is a hack too. And Terrance Howard was the only bad thing about the first movie...the movie is improving...think about it. Sam Rockwell over Mickey Rourke ANY FUCKIN' DAY...You whiners are AMATEUR

  • He was understated in that half minute seconds he was onscreen, and he sold the idea that we're headed for a much larger universe that all interconnects and WORKS. Once you start changing too many actors from one film to the next, the continuity is gone and there's too much to ignore. Of course you can still enjoy it if it's a good movie, I just think everyone would prefer that they'd stick with Howard and Jackson. It could have been a truly epic universe if done right and NOT on the cheap... and they would have been rewarded for it too. I also think they'd forgo making the movie altogether before losing RDJ or Favs. If they lost either one of them for playing it cheap, the stock would plummet and they'd be held to task by their stockholders. There's just no way they can go it without those two. I also think everyone is seriously underestimating the much larger exposure Rourke is going to get once the Wrestler hits DVD. Many people haven't seen it, and I really believe it's going to connect with middle America once they can actually watch it at home. So IM 2 trailers would hit just around the time his exposure to the audience is cresting and it WOULD give it that little extra bit of interest. Still, I can understand not wanting to take a chance giving him too much money and then having him up to his old tricks again. RDJ's climb back to the top took longer than one movie and he really earned it and seemed to have the right attitude towards the entire venture. I love that he said to Paltrow, "Don't you want to be in a movie that people actually SEE." Yeah... take that you fuckin english wannabe. He's just a MUCH better actor than anyone else out there, borderline genius, and his humility proves what self-obsessed idiots the reset of them, who are nowhere near as talented, truly are. Then there's Tropic Thunder, something hardly any comedians, let alone dramatic actors could get away with.

    I don't get it

    by cherryvalance

why are they having so many issues with the money? Didn't they make enough with the first one to cast whoever is a good choice?

Is anyone going to miss Howard?

    by blindambition238

Most of his scenes were cut so he wasnt really shown doing anything. I was skeptical of Chedel as an Army man too, but I just watched him play a deep cover spy in Traitor recently, and he was really convincing.
Anyways, Howard should just be grateful he was paid more than RDJ, Paltrow, or Bridges in the 1st one...

    Personally, I don't really care

    by superfleish76

Yes, Marvel doesn't need to be low balling quality talent, but I don't really need for Rourke to be in this. It's kind of a shame that Howard is out, but I'm a bigger fan of Cheadle. Now, Nick Fury needs to be Sam Jackson if they are going to have him play a major part. If not, write him out and hire him for the eventual Avengers movie.

    sam jackson was embarassing

    by redrockpest

The minute he turned up, credibility vanished. He has no place in a believable universe.

Rourke is a crazoid - who cares?

    by annoyyou

This is someone who used to beat up his partner, who disfigured his face with continued plastic surgery, who pissed off everyone in the business, and, by the accounts of people I know who worked with him, is batshit crazy and is always carrying around little smelly dogs. Ick. I don't care how great "The Wrestler" is - Rourke is past his prime and NOT an asset to any movie he's in. Because he's icky!

AnnoyYou - thats why he would be perfect...

    by jimmyjoe redsky

... for the villain - he is a crazy larger than life character (now anyway) - but i knew the rumor was too good to be true - marvel thinks the real magic is the property - iron man as a brand - theyre wrong - the f4 movies proved this - great property, piss poor movies - its the talent attached that makes the brand worth checking out - the first one was great because of the director the lead and the supporting cast - the screenplay didnt hurt either - so far they still have the director, downey and a decent writer - why stop there - get jackson and rourke - spend the money, youll get it back

Iron Man 2: To Catch a Hulk

    by wolfrankula

Remember the very last scene in Hulk with Ross and Stark? If they don't follow that up with Iron Man going after Hulk then what was the point of that? That was the first thing that sprang to my mind when I saw it. Better to have IM reign him in before the Avengers movie than cram in his joining the team in there. Both movies were well cast and entertaining.... it seems like a no-brainer to me. Would be the 1st crossover super hero movie too, I think.

    MICKEY ROURKE AS NICK FURY

    by mullah omar

Just to fuck with everyone, he should turn down the role as the bad guy and start pushing to take over the Nick Fury role.

For good measure, start the hype machine to cast Sam Jackson as the Mandarin.
