But in slow motion.

    Can't be a Snyder Clip..

    by Losteroo

Without at least 1 or 2 seconds of super slo-mo

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:50 a.m. CST

    Owlship FTW!

    by SpyGuy

Not a good clip to represent the movie as a whole, but damn, that Owlship sure looks sweet.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:50 a.m. CST

    by Spastic Jedi

Looks great, too bad the clip is so damn small.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:50 a.m. CST

sorry, but this is not impressive

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:51 a.m. CST

    Worse than I ever imagined.

    by HoboCode

Atrocious acting + Hack Snyder slomo = PURE SHIT FAIL.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:52 a.m. CST

How can anyone think that looked good?

    by HoboCode

    Seriously? That was utter garbage.

    Lost TB?

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:56 a.m. CST

I want this film right now.

    by Judge_Dredd

    Not next month, now!

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:58 a.m. CST

    by Spastic Jedi

"Worse than you ever imagined"? Serioulsy? If so, you obviously haven't been watching any movies for the past 20 years or simply have no imagination, because this could be waaaaaay worse. A Brett Ratner directed Watchmen? That is about as bad as I can imagine.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 9:58 a.m. CST

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:01 a.m. CST

    Not looking very promising.

    by hollywoodsummers

I really hope they just showed the worst possible 1 1/2 min from the movie. Based on this I may have to skip opening weekend and wait for the word from people I trust... of course not Harry.

Is trying to act too cool for school or has liquid shit where there brain is supposed to be. If you don't like it youre probably better off just shutting up and draining the feces from your brain than embarrassing yourself by saying so.

    Spastic Jedi

    by HoboCode

Jesus are your standards low. That was complete and total BUNK. Ratner, the hack that he is, at least wouldn't have riddled his film with amateurish slo-mo fueled by horrible looking CGI.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:05 a.m. CST

    by HoboCode

Face reality dude. This movie will turn your brain into liquid shit if it isn't already.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:07 a.m. CST

    by Spastic Jedi

You think Brett Ratner would have made a better Watchmen? Well, at least everyone now officially knows that your opinions are worthless or... you are Brett Ratner, which I think would actually be worse than having shit opinions.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:09 a.m. CST

    I Watch The Watchmen..........

    by JD Lux

If this movie is 1/10th as good as the graphic novel then we are all gonna get our asses beat hard when this finally comes out.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:11 a.m. CST

    by Chesterfield Slacks

When I show clips to folks who know nothing about the Watchmen, they roll their eyes and say it looks cheesy and over-the-top. One person said it looks "Wachowski-wanna-be" bad.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:12 a.m. CST

    While I wasn't enthralled...

    by TheBlackKnight

I'll still reserve judgment until March 6. I was kind of hoping that the fiery explosion in slo-mo in the trailer was just slowed down for the trailer, but alas...
If that was entirely unedited, then it's disappointing. They didn't try to build up the danger that they were in by risking their lives. This is the first heroic thing they've done in the last decade, and nearly dying in a tenement fire should have a huge impact on them (at least Silk Spectre). It didn't seem like they were in any danger. But yeah, it's only 1 1/2 minutes of the movie so. We'll see.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:13 a.m. CST

    by Mostholy

Well, I'll reserve judgement until 3/6. But neither this nor any of the four other clips floating around (get with the program, AICN: ) give me much cause for hope. This one and the Comedian one are slo-mo-ridden. The Nite Owl scenes with Rorschach and Ozy also seem stilted to me.

I know it's hard to judge a movie from scenes taken out of context like this -- they'll probably work much better in the flow of the film. Still, this is starting to look like what I feared -- a collection of beautiful stills that are dull, lifeless, and hamhanded as a movie.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:14 a.m. CST

The clip STRATEGY is interesting to me.

    by FluffyUnbound

    Why release THIS clip?

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:15 a.m. CST

"Horrible-looking CGI" is such a cliched criticism now

    by D.Vader

Really Hobocode? Really? What was horrible, the shiny, metal owlship that you know is fake bc such a thing doesn't exist in real life? I have to laugh now when pple criticize "HORRIBLE CGI!" bc it just sounds like kneejerk reactions from someone hoping to hate what they see.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:15 a.m. CST

    fire or water

    by haywood

Blast that water tank and its either death by fire or they drown. Hopefully it will all come together on the big screen, hopefully. Its amazing everyone stays dry through out that clip.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:16 a.m. CST

    Still not that impressed...

    by Alkeoholic77

I really think that I am going to be let down by this movie. I have been saying it for months now and that clip just confirmed my fears. But maybe my expectations will be so low for the movie that I will actually end up liking it like Transformers.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:17 a.m. CST

    by 11ZOMBIES

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:17 a.m. CST

    i agree with hobo

    by jabba_quest

loved the graphic novel, but this shows nothing to get excited about, quite the opposite actually. acting sounded very flat and the slo-mo use is unecessary, i'm afraid that it'll be another 300 type film: style over substance. would be a shame as the source material has lots of depth. i just hope that that's not the edit of that sequence that we'll see in theatres, maybe they shortened it just for the preview.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:19 a.m. CST

    by HoboCode

I was referrign to the fake looking slo-mo of SSII turning during the explosion. Rivaled Speed Racer.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:20 a.m. CST

    Not blown away

    by Geekhaterssuck

but it is just one clip from a moment that's not that memorable from the GN to me at least. I might have to wait for DVD on this one just because I have a 3 month old daughter that dominates my time, but I'm still looking forward to it.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:20 a.m. CST

While I enjoyed the clip overall...

    by mefrog

I hope this was 90 seconds of a three minute scene. The pacing was wildly off, and rushed as hell. And yeah, slow-mo at the end: totally unnecessary.

Great music, though.

A suggestion to the haters and trolls...

    by rutgersjaffo

How about you let those of us who are looking forward to this enjoy it? I know it's a novel concept, but since none of us has actually seen the film yet, why don't you save all of your pissy little rants and expert advice on how to make a quality film for after we have actually seen the movie? Which, you will do of course, since otherwise you can't say jack shit about the movie without looking like a total fucktard. Of course, what could be more fucktardish than paying to see a movie just so you can dump on it? Jeez...

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:26 a.m. CST

The first 2 trailers had my hopes high for this!

    by hollywoodsummers

After watching these clips I've been knocked back to reality and have much lower expectations. Regardless of what I think of the film, I still have the novel and the animated version from iTunes. Maybe Moore was right to be against this film? Hope not, but statring to look that way to me a bit. DAMN IT!!

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:26 a.m. CST

    Utter fail

    by drturing

Matthew Goode's Ozy: what the fuck is up with his accent and his slight build? And for anyone who thinks Snyder has done the GN justice, go back and read the tenement fire scene in the book, which is played as clumsy and delicate and has no action. But YEAH ROCKIN WATCHMEN GUITARRRO BLAST neener neener! It's so rad when the Owlship Extreme uses its Owlcannons to needlessly blow up a CG water tower while the guitars go chunka chunka! And Cameron Diaz looks HOT.

    by Stengah

that was one of my favorite parts of the comic.. and it just didn't feel right. sigh.

What kind of accent does Veidt have?

    by D.Vader

I don't remember him being German in the book....?

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:32 a.m. CST

Yeah - it looks like Veidt has been miscast...

    by Righteous Brother

I'm worried that, what was great on paper may not translate well on the screen. I've got this sinking feeling that, after the credits roll, my friends who don't read comics are going to turn round to me and say 'That was shit, I thought you said Watchmen was supposed to be amazing.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:32 a.m. CST

yeah rorschach nite owl scene is like sitcom version

    by drturing

jackie earle haley has nailed the part obviously, but the pace and tone of that scene was way off, like i expected a studio audience to go "awwwww" at the end of it. there's none of dreiberg's justified freakout.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:34 a.m. CST

    Seriously what's with Goode's accent?

    by drturing

Is that the "my parents were Nazis and I'm trying to escape my german heritage" thing he was talking about months ago? I can't understand half of what he's saying.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:34 a.m. CST

    by D.Vader

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that clip is *exactly* how its played out in the book, is it not?

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:35 a.m. CST

    by Chesterfield Slacks

of the Watchmen type story. It's called "The Incredibles"

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:36 a.m. CST

Veidt has a vague germanic accent....

    by Cameron1

couple of interviews with Goode have mentioned they gave him a very different pre-history with German (possibly Nazi) parentage. It's just fucking dumb and also incredibly obvious that Veidt is the "bad guy" as it were.

    Beyond unimpressed

    by Cagliostro

Everything reminds me of an episode of Buffy. Veidt's Man Who Fell to Earth routine seems to epitomize how contrived this all is.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:40 a.m. CST

    by HoboCode

I couldn't understand him either actually. Nice slomo shot of the Comedian jumping out of the ship by the way. Anyway I've said my peace. I think these clips reveal major problems with the film but if you guys want to see it, go for it. But don't tell me I'm a hating troll. I guarantee half of you fucks have posted hating comments about Ang's Hulk or Superman Returns when I enjoyed the hell out of them and feel they are two of the better made comic book films. That should reveal my tases to you guys and if you don't like it than YOU can fuck off and you can ignore my Watchmen comments.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:41 a.m. CST

D Vader, it's not even close by half

    by drturing

Go and read it to see how woefully ridiculous this is. They've dropped in an action beat for no other reason than to have an ultracool action beat. In the book the apt rescue features no machine guns, no slow motion fireball dodging, no silk spectre breaking through rooftops (which doesn't make sense cause she has no powers of any kind). It plays out exactly why Watchmen is a masterpiece - it's an utterly silly romantic notion of superheroes coming to save people at a building fire and it has the texture of reality. It's kinda clumsy, and awkward, and when dreiberg sees her in costume ready to go save people he gets turned on, which is tied into the whole impotence thing anyway. Likewise it's really funny - she spends more time arguing with people why it's a good idea to get on the ship than to dodge special effects. In fact they play jazz on the ship, she makes everyone coffee, and a woman tries smoking onboard.
I thought Watchmen was a wild what if superheroes were REAL. Actually real, and had to deal with banal, clumsy and extraordinary reality. Everything about that clip screams over the top bullshit to me.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:41 a.m. CST

    by rutgersjaffo

I think that's going to happen to everbody. If you didn't read the GN and love it, I don't know that this movie will be something you enjoy. I hope I am wrong though...

    Big Fucking Squid

    by BobParr

WHERE WAS THE SQUID????? "Watchmen" should be renamed "Big Fucking Squid" because it is the most important part of the entire graphic novel and the one thing that should be obsessed about.
PS- Veidt does come across like a pussy.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:42 a.m. CST

    Is anyone worried that....

    by Righteous Brother

IF - the film turns out to be a steaming pile of turd, it will forever taint their view or the original comic? And they'll never be able to read it again?

    AICN = LATE !!! AGAIN !!!!

    by j_difool

aicn is the slowest fucking "news" site on earth. this was on television (!) for god'ssake faster than you fat asses picked it up! and the clips have me more worried for the film than i ever was before. shit acting (particularly MGoode), ridiculous slo-mo, absolutely NO pacing in the cutting.... OMG.... this could be a DISASTER. and you fools are eating it up. this could be very fun to watch.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:46 a.m. CST

Look Snyder is a great director, especially visually

    by drturing

his Dawn of the Dead is 90% perfect for a first feature. But this is just the wrong material for him. He's done a tremendous job making things look right. And please as hobocode says do enjoy it. But even these small snippets are enough to convince those of us who really love the graphic novel for having done something really different with comic books that it isn't the same thing. It's the same look and narrative, but it's all dialed up to 11. I don't think Watchmen is a comic book in which rapes and horrible beatings happen (as some say the film is even more graphic). I think it's a fully featured, three dimensional portrayal of a literary trope made utterly believeable and examines the human condition on multiple, multiple levels.

    Love the fire rescue.

    by knowthyself

Gotta get used to Veidts accent. The rest is good stuff. Kinda weird when taken out of context. You can snap 30 second scenes from LOTR and have the same "this could suck" feeling as well. Really best to take in the whole film instead of these bite sized pieces.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:47 a.m. CST

DrTuring that's not what I was referring to

    by D.Vader

I was speaking of the Rorshach/Nite Owl scene.
As FOR the fire scene.... uh, how does having him shoot the water tower ruin the film? As for turning it into a small action scene, the book has very few "set pieces" that make up films, so it should be no surprise they turned this scene into something a bit more exciting than what it was on paper. Your criticisms sound like they're from someone expecting and wanting this to fail.

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 10:48 a.m. CST

    GN vs Movie

    by Spastic Jedi

Two different mediums, two different audiences. Books can sell on a small scale and yet convey epic imaginary scale. Movies cannot, unfortunately. The general movie going audience isn't going to buy tickets and popcorn to see SSII make everyone coffee onboard the Owl Ship. They will however buy tickets and popcorn to watch machine guns and explosions. Sad but true. So we have to take the bad with the good and be happy films based on these properties are even being made at all. This film is not going to be perfect, hell, The Dark Knight is not perfect, it doesn't follow the GN at all! Graphic Novels are not movies, Movies are not Graphic Novels, and there are reasons for that. I think if this film even matches 50% of the GN, and it looks like it does, than we have to be happy with it. Seriously, they even made an animated Black Freighter! We got to give it a chance.

I'm gonna reserve judgment till I see the film, you can't tell from seeing a few clips out of context, I've been a massive fan of the GN since it came out - I'm rooting for it to succeed. The clips have made me ever so slightly weary though. Although I do agree with the whole the movie is the movie, and the GN is the GN argument.

I concur. I for one wholly recognize that a movie is a different interpretation of a source material... and the movie is Snyder's vision of the graphic novel. It's not mine, it's not Alan Moore's ... it's Snyder's. I just hope that it's fun and something that holds up to a second viewing. The best part about the graphic novel is that you can re-read it.

I was hesitant to watch these...

    by Kammich

Due to the lack of context, the terrible feedback in the TB, and the fact that I feel like I've already seen too much in the trailers... so when I realized my speakers were unplugged, I took that as a sign. No clips for me until March 6th. I don't want my expectations to be tampered with(for good or for bad), because all I want to do is hopefully enjoy this thing for what it is: a fun movie experience that just-so-happens to be adapting one of my favorite pieces of pop culture ever.

All I'm Gonna say Is This:

    by JayWells87

These clips actually brought my hopes up. It isn't a frame for frame adaptation, which is good. They took the essence of the story, shot it the way THEY wanted to, and who gives a fuck if they changed the means of the ending? It's a fucking METAPHOR. I'm looking forward to the movie, and if it sucks I will surely say that it does. But right now all signs point to it being a cool interpretation of the Watchmen story. That's all I want. You fanboys who have waited years for this really need to lower your expectations and have a good time like the rest of us.

    by Geekhaterssuck

If you don't like the clips that's fine, but my gosh give it a rest. You people act like this a personal affront to your lives. I'm all for being passionate about what you enjoy but lord give it a rest. Squid or no squid, flames on Optimus, Joker wears make-up, Spidey's shooters are organic, give it a freaking rest. It is just a movie. Yes the graphic novel is on Time magazine's top 100 but in the ultimate scheme of things it's just a comic. I know I've just insulted half of you that have wet dreams during your fantasy of a threesome with Silk Spectre 1 and 2, and some of you are now donning your Rorschach masks planning my demise, but it's just a comic. Yes a brillant work but a comic nonetheless. The only person who has a modicum of a right to be insulted if this sucks is Alan Moore, the man who created it. The rest of you are just pathetic. I personally was blown away by the trailers, not so much by these clips, but guess what? I am going to reserve final judgement until I see the movie whenever that may be. If I like I'll say so, if I don't I'll say so, but I won't cream my pants in excitement if I like it, and I won't come here screaming Zack Snyder raped my Watchmen if I don't. You know why? Because I have a freaking life outside the interet and movie theatre. You people act like you've been insulted, but guess what? The movie was made to make money, not bring your dream to life. Get over yourselves.

What is the deal with all this slomo?

    by Coma Baby

It has me worried. So many details are spot on, but can't the director give a scene weight at normal speed? Does every scene have some kind of slow motion? I've only seen the trailers and these short clips. But among them there's got to be at least 5 or 6 scenes with it. It's like he doesn't trust his ability to reach the audience (or he thinks we're all idiots) so he slows down at the images he wants you to remember - "here, look at this guy going out the window, it's important, he's going through the window, and he's being thrown - that's badass... check out the Commedian jumping out the helicopter, seriously, check him out - he means business... watch the Silk Spectre's hair whip around - keep watching - beautiful, right? Slow motion is hardly ever used in a good movie because a good director trusts that the images he wants to emphasize will stand out on their own - because of the way they're shot and edited, or because you're involved in the story. It comes off as a crutch. Though of course if somebody's head is exploding, let's be honest, that's got to be in slow motion...

I agree that they should of kept the scene exactly like it was in the GN. Because I love Rorshach's dialogue, but the scene is still great. And the actor playing Veidt is adding alot of emotional depth to the character. I didn't think he could do it, but it's being done. I hope this film will be awesome, because it's showing so much promise. And I'm happy that not everything in this film is a shot-by-shot adaptation of the GN. Snyder is actually taking chances, and I appreciate that. :)

    Ozy Voice

    by Brad Seltzer

It just really bothers me that the smartest, most capable man in the world who has trained his body and mind to the point of perfection would not have the muscle control necessary to PRONOUNCE WORDS and be INTELLIGIBLE when speaking! This does not bode well.
Veidt is sad, gay, German, and worst of all, unintelligible.
Rorshach/Dreiburg scene seemed off somehow, bad pacing - ruined the moment.
Fire rescue missed the mark, as someone already pointed out. But I hope it was just changed to save time
I'm not judging the whole movie based on these scenes. I'm not a hater, I want the movie to be great. But I have to call it like I see it - this isn't looking good. I'm hoping it will look much better in context. But everything in that negative review holds up here.
I wonder if Snyder is so concerned with the visual quality of the shot that he seems things like "acting" and "pacing" as just annoying things that get in the way.

    Clips are for morons

    by bostonjh

and that's who's getting riled up over these. They release these clips to entice people to see the movie...people who haven't already made up their minds whether they will see it. So they release movies that have a little action, show a few different characters and try to get at some small part of the movie. You won't see any of the "reality" touches in these clips because 1) that would give away what's different about the Watchmen and they want to save that for the theater and 2) Suspense and action brings people to the theater. In this clip you get a curious look at Veidt being all prissy, and Nite-Owl looking totally wimpy and too nice to be a hero. You get the fire rescue scene (and we have no reason yet to think the coffee and jazz won't be in the final scene) for its action. And you get a glimpse at the tension between Rorschach and the rest. The clip sets up everything the fanboys expect from a Watchmen story as it relates to the characters. And for non fanboys it gives them some tease and some action hoping to intrigue them. This can't have too many FX because the movie only has a few major FX scenes and they can't blow their wad on clips that will get love/hate anyway. The clips are just fine. Let's see how they hold up in the context of the whole movie.

Why does everyone have such a heated opinion about this movie one way or the other? Aesthetically, the footage looks great. The soundtrack/sound design seem really solid. The attention to detail is admirable. The slow-motion is a matter of taste, but it doesn't make or break a film. The one worry I have is that acting is not good, and it'd take a lot of "context" to make what we've seen work in the context of the full scenes/film. Bad acting doesn't kill a movie, but it virtually always prevents it from being great. I'm a fan of the graphic novel (I couldn't care less about the squid), and what has seemed to be the challenge, to me, is to make the dialogue work. So far, I am not impressed, but I'm keeping an open mind. If I was to get heated about anything, it'd be about you fuck-ups who think they have this thing figured out, one way or the other, without having seen it. I'm hopeful. Dubious, but still hopeful.

But I guess that happens with every film. Even "TDK" is getting some batlash, while Nolan is probably one of the most beloved filmmakers among fanboys. Let's hope that Zack Snyder will become this generations Ridley Scott, and deliver something great in "Watchmen." And the Nite Owl 2/Rorshach scene was fantastic. It's one of my favorite moments in the GN, and it has really been brought to life. :)

Didn't WANT a frame for frame re-inactment of the comic... it wouldn't work. It makes more sense for Dan to warn Veidt in broad daylight, rather than Rorschach, and I liked the more action-oriented fire rescue.
One thing I continue to DISLIKE, however, is the treatment of The Comedian. From having him as a mustachioed, cigar-smoking ADULT in 1939, to his almost non-existent facial scar and lack of a "gimp" mask, his whole look is just off. I wouldn't even MIND the lack of his mask, if only they'd given him that scar that completely disfigured his face! It makes absolutely no sense why they didn't do it. I mean, it's not like it'd be hard to do! Really bad decision...

Coffee on the Owlship - Holy Tie In!

    by fbarich

It is in the movie btw.... It's a small moment in the film WATCHMEN - Dan and Laurie save a group from a tenament fire. Once inside the Owl Ship, the survivors are offered what else? Coffee. Among all that hardware, there's an airplane-style coffee maker. And Veidt Enterprise's Nite Owl Dark Roast is the imaginary brand of coffee they brew. What better name for the quinessential caffinated beverage when served in the context of nocturnal crime-fighting? In truth, this is 100% organic specialty coffee from WATCHMEN unit photographer Clay Enos and his Organic Coffee Cartel.

WHAT THE FUCK IS SO HARD FOR YOU PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE NEW DOC-ENDING1?!?! He WAS an american weapon, but if he nukes AMERICA (which he will) ALONG with other cities in other countries, the WORLD WILL UNITE TO FIGHT HIM... he becomes a COMMON threat. Also, it is actually quite a smart ending, when you think about the fact that America created the Atomic bomb, and it could be that same technology that could destroy our country. Like in iron man--he feels guilty when he realizes his weapons are being used by terrorists. Its a very appropriate ending given the state the world is in, and the constant threat that weapons we have created could be turned on us. But some of you are FUCKING IDIOTS because you can't realize that if AMERICA GETS BOMBED, AMERICA IS ALSO A VICTIM... JUST AS MUCH OF A VICTIM AS ANYONE ELSE WHO GETS NUKED... jesus, and these are the same people who are so analytical about the comic book and read into the subtext so much... if you guys can do THAT, why can't you understand a very simple concept that is the new alternate ending???

Even if America gets bombed too and is also a victim of Manhattan's attack...Manhattan was America's responsibility, he worked for and was enabled by America. Therefore, the perception will be that the attacks stem directly from America's lack of foresight and lack of control over him. Not to mention the fact that Manhattan is an American. If Manhattan was a Soviet superhero named Manharilenko who nukes the whole world, do you honestly think we wouldn't blame the Soviets for the way THEIR weapon went berserk and destroyed the world because THEY made him the lynchpin of their national defense and war strategy? It doesn't make sense, and under this scenario the, "world will unite" idea doesn't fly. And for the record, I'm ok with no squid - the squid wouldn't have worked in the film, but I'm just sayin'.

Do the avatarded people feel that they don't get enough threads to praise avatar as the second coming? I mean, you've gotten 2 threads on little behind the scenes shots that show NOTHING, but the message count on those is insane.

people may be counting their chickens before they come home to roost in regards to this movie, HOWEVER, i hope you're in all the AVATAR threads saying the same damn thing, because we know how incredible the source material is for watchmen, we've seen the trailers which make it look like a visually stunning movie (and yes, slow mo is perfect for a COMIC BOOK movie, because it gives you a little longer look at some of the best framed shots like a comic does) and its rated R. That's enough for me to get excited and get my hopes up. Avatar praise is insane considering how little of it we've seen (and that's an understatement)

we don't know if DOC makes the decision to go nuke-happy on everyone's asses, (come to think about that, i could see that as a its always sunny in philadelphia title: the gang goes nuke happy on everyone's asses) but i digress, we don't KNOW that doc decides to do this himself... I understand no squid, but i find it hard to believe that Veidt will have no hand in the destruction at the end... i mean, i can actually understand people who are obsessed with the squid, i really can, but i will NEVER be able to understand, and would be furious, if the main bad-guy isn't behind the destruction at the end... that would be a HUGE dealbreaker in my book, and would make even less sense for the average viewer than the squid, and that's saying ALOT...

  • Feb. 18, 2009, 3:49 p.m. CST

    by wixmmm

Zandunga: No, you're wrong. First off, the fact that America can't control him actually does the GN justice--it means that the whole world will have to work together to stop him, because alone, he doesn't have a chance. Also, as i said above, Veidt had to have a major hand in the ending... but ultimately, back to my atomic bomb analogy: The US developed the Atomic bomb and used it to end a war. Now, an atomic bomb could very well start a war (and could start something far worse) You think America will get blamed if some country nukes another country, because they invented the atomic bomb? And face it, DOC stopped being american at the same time as he became inhuman. He went along with America, but no one can control him. Also, America didn't make DOC into the superman he became. But the ultimate concept behind the ending will stay true to the book--the world will be too busy trying to work together to stop DOC or the DOC-related destruction from happening to blame America and blow up America--everyone will be too busy making sure they don't get blown up.

When I see Rorschach in the Nite Owl/Rorschach scene, I can't help but see Kelly Leak from the Bad News Bears movies. He even has the same weird build. I'm my head, I'm going to imagine that after Rorschach's crappy childhood he joined a lttle league baseball team that was headed up by Walter Matthau, William Devane and the finally Tony Curtis. When that super-edition comes out on DVD with the Tales of the Black Freighter stuff edited back in, I might use iMovie to edit in scenes from the Bad News Bears movies to round out his childhood. I also want to highlight out he had his heart broken in Japan by not including the scene where his Japanese love interest runs back to the field. His heart will break and he will become Rorschach.

    The World vs. Doc Manhattan

    by DennisMM

How is that supposed to lead to world peace? Destruction by Doc M all over the world just leads to each nation freaking out about future attacks. Uniting against Doc M just leads to paranoia on everyone's part. In the GN the squid is seen as a threat, but scientists quickly announce that the dimensional incursion seems to have been an accident. It's sympathy for the US and direct aid offered to the US by the Soviets and other governments that leads to the pact discussed in the last pages. That pact is about the commonality of all humanity and the fragility of life. It's not a knife-edge balance, waiting for big blue to show up and nuke some more. It's about caring, not fear.

    by dirtsandwich

The trailers look cool, but whoopdie fucking do. The characters acting in these clips don't.

***SPOILERS*** As for Avatar, it has a great story, we know JC will have strong characters. In 2D I'm sure it'll be a great movie. But in 3D IMAX will be mind blowing. It'll be a SciFi space adventure, Pandora alone will be stunning with its landscape, terrain and all its inhabitants, both creature and intelligent. I'm anxious to see the floating mountains.

The idea of a paraplegic using a hybrid body to "walk again" and to experience all the senses of that body on an alien world is a fucking killer idea. The hardware from machines we haven't seen before like weapons, spacecraft, and technology in general will be sweet. Look what he did in 1985 with Aliens. The powerloader, the drop ship, the land rovers.

On top of that, it's being filmed using the Fusion Pace 3D HD digital cameras. Weta is providing the realistic performance capture that is the latest version and suppose to be an improvement on anything we've seen before, like Kong and Gollum.

This is why it'll be "Fucking your eyeballs in 2009!"

The only thing the film might suffer from is attempting a love story between Jake/hybrid and a female Na'vi. This might work or come off totally cornball. The other issue might be the preachy aspect of it. Similar to the director's cut of The Abyss near the end.

    Gimp Mask

    by Spastic Jedi

I think if this film came out in '86, then the gimp mask would work. It's 2009 and that mask conveys an even darker visual than it used to, we've had 30 years of increasingly violent and disturbed visuals in media. It's a mass marketed big budget film, it has to play to more than just us, the desensitized fanboys. I for one enjoy a bit of the hyperviolence and the ol' "in out, in out", but if they want this film to sell, you have to make some cuts to the source content.

Rorschach and Patrick Wilson as Nite Owl seem almost perfect. Comedian is hard to tell. Mickey Rourke, post muscle building and pre-plastic surgery could have nailed it, and Thomas Jane (judging by Stander and not Punisher) might have made a surprisingly good choice. Silk Spectre also tough to judge from this scene. Always saw her as a model past her glory days, vunerable and unsure what to do with herself, or more aptly Gypsy Rose Lee post child star and aching to break away from her domineering mother. It seems like the insecurity of a relatively neophyte actress like Ackeman could serve the role well and there's a certain quality in her that evokes my sympathy. At another time, Geena Davis, Demi Moore or Charlize Theron (think 2 Days in the Valley) could have all been good choices: they've all displayed the statuesque physicality, the external toughness and inner fragility I associate with Jupesczyk. Matthew Goode as Ozymandius is a question mark. I like the actor (great in The Lookout), understand the choices but I am not feeling the character. In the comic, O had a certain zen-like calm and clear intellect, but with a hint of intensity and arrogance. While I'm sure he's setting us up, for the character's reversal, Goode's a little too much like an ivory tower academic and a bit too sad in this admittedly small sliver of a scene. I can understand so many other people have thought Cruise would be perfect, although I could never see him capturing O's stillness and remove. In the comic, until the truth is revealed, you believe Ozymandius is the one character that could actually save the day, once he recognizes the threat. A well known, charismatic star, especially one associated with heroic roles would have been a good way to set up the plot twist, especially for an audience unfamiliar with the story. If I could cast anybody from any period, Robert Redford, Christopher Plummer or Michael York in their prime all come to mind. Much more difficult to think of a current star who embodies O's qualities. Jude Law has some, but I wouldn't be as surprised if he turned out to be a villain. Alexander Skarsgard, maybe? (he's my pick for Thor or Captain America) I understand Snyder's challenge with this role. BTW, the german accent doesn't bother me --O's parents were immigrants--but the mumbling does bother me. Everything about O should be perfect, including his diction. Yeah, I'll still go see it. "Dawn" was really good, "300" was at least pretty to look at. I haven't written Snyder off just yet.

All looking pretty great to me...

    by Ghostball

...and that's all that matters, surely. As far Matthew 'Marble Mouth' Goode, I can understand him perfectly - nice sombre performance. Shame in a way they didn't stick with Rorshach, but these changes generally seem to be fascinating, organic flourishes, rather than change for the sake of it. Don't know what you were all hoping for, but I sure as hell can't wait for you all to quit your careers in burger flipping and create the 21st century's Citizen Kane. Guess Watchmen and Avatar will just have to tide me over 'til then.
Oh, and that new news about the squid being 'in' on the extended cut is basically fuckin' sweet.
Anyway, I'll leave you to carry on shitting on your own hopes of ever having a good time at the movies, fuckers!

How Many People Who "Hate" These Clips Will See It

    by LaserPants

All of them. On opening weekend. Several times. Each time finding something new they "hate" so they can come home, eat 35 hoagies, type a message about how Silk Spectre's knees are ALL WRONG, eat 60 more hoagies, jerk off, cry, eat another 50 hoagies, go see the movie 600 more times, cry again, masturbate, eat more, wonder when they'll ever leave mom's basement (answer: never), see movie again, "hate" it even more, eat 6,000 hoagies, have seventh heart attack, cry, eat more, watch, "hate", eat, cry, masturbate, "hate", eat, cry, masturbate, "hate", etc etc etc and on and on until they die of some obesity / diabetes / heart disease...

Clips look fine, movie will be great

    by Moviegimp

Besides the jazzy action they put into the fire rescue scene the rest of them look perfect from the comic. There is no actual scene in the comic of The Comedian jumping from the Owl ship, just him on it and then on the ground, so what is wrong with slo mo? I kind of wish they were doing it Sin City style shot for shot but since they are changing other things changing the fire scene doesn't bother me. When I heard the machine guns I thought wth but then when I saw he shot the water tower and it didn't put the fire out but just lessened it I thought it made good sense. I have a feeling most of the haters are the lovers of TDK and think if this a good than people will stop talking about TDK. Which by the way was not as great as you think no matter how much you disagree. Far more problems in that film than what I've seen in this one.

Rorschach by palpatinefuckedmydog Feb 19th, 2009 09:17:54 AM should be the same height as Nite owl...until they discover he's wearing lifts. I think you're wrong. If you look at the page where Rorschach is eating beans the next few panels clearly show him shorter than Nite Owl. He is described later as being 5'3", 5'4" and even with lifts that only makes him 5'8" at best.

This looks great - and no big stars is a plus

    by JimmyJoe RedSky

i cant wait - a 3 hr r-rated superhero movie - its amazing this even got made - these clips are just that - clips - tiny fragments - i for one like what i see - im confident the movie will deliver - the director seems a hardcore fan - as he was when he made 300 - like it or not, that movie delivered big time - on cloning the comic, ill say it... this looks better than the comic - as long as the story and characters are intact who cares if it looks slightly different - "physically" most movie incarnations of superheroes are wrong - wolverine isnt 6'2" and thin - but he is in the movies - and ive yet to see a real comic book superman on the big screen - like jim lee's or john byrne's

  • Feb. 19, 2009, 3:59 p.m. CST

    by LaserPants

I dunno, I'm not buying his performance in these clips. He comes off kind of bland to me. I think he should be a guy who radiates charisma and charm, but in a creepy way. I don't see this guy pulling it off all that well. Someone like Jude Law would be perfect.

I don't think its a dealbreaker or anything, I'm just disappointed in the Ozy casting.

    by JimmyJoe RedSky

its funny - i thought, based on these tiny fragments, that this actor did radiate (pompous) charisma and charm - and while handsome, came off creepy - i bet after you see the movie you wont care - speaking of jude law... sky captain shoulda been played by an american actor with serial cliff hanger charm and jaw-line - like tom jane or aaron eckhart - but i still like that movie a lot

    BREAKING NEWS- Comrade Hurlbut dead!

    by Prossor

From AICN's latest Scoop, by Quint. 1940. The exiled would-be successor to the Bolshevik throne Hurlbut was found dead in his home in Mexico, killed by an unknown assassin. A Camera tripod was found lodged into his skull. He was writing his memoirs titled "Bale: To Know the Man is to Tweak Lights In His Eyeline". Rumors circulated it was likely on orders from Comrade Bale, who recently has been juggling a thought of a Non-Aggression Treaty with Chancellor Bale, the two dictators may work together to carve up Poland. England and France objected to aid their beleaguered nation.

you know Snyder did something right....

    by teddanson37

if the whiner babies over at AICN aren't bitching about minute details about your movie that's when you get worried. Actually I thought all the clips were great. Probably the slomo with Silk Spectre was the weakest part. Veidt seemed believable to me actually. His parents were German immigrants in the graphic novel so him having that accent makes a little sense. I was more thrown off by the fact that Dan was the one having that conversation with Veidt instead of Rorschach. And the conversation Nite Owl and Rorschach felt right. I got a smile when Walter held out his hand at the end. Dan's uproar may seem out of place, but we don't really know what happened the scene before that... actually we do. One of the Blue Men came and took his new girlfriend away to mars. Probably pissed Dan off quite a bit. So you can't judge the drama in that scene yet. I felt the New York Riot clip was pretty perfect. My favorite of the group is the Veidt conversation even though it diverges greatly from the graphic novel, the scene does something else: builds tension and lets us see more of Veidt, both are due to the fact that he's interacting with a "normal" person as apposed to interacting with the guy that wears the test for crazy on his face.
