FANBOYS is expanding in 10 more markets! Big Columbus, OH screening! Wow!

Published at:  Feb 17, 2009 11:20:00 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Ernie Cline, screenwriter of FANBOYS, and geek-nerd extraordinaire sent me the following amazing news about his little film that is having it's own little Cinderella story. Often times when you see these films roll out like this, they never get past stage one... then two months later they hit DVD. Well, we don't yet have an eta on the DVD/Blu-Ray, but there is some good news with FANBOYS. It's per screen business, with basically no AD support at all has been strong enough that the powers that be at the Weinstein Company are doing a further roll out into other College markets. Here's what Ernie sent me:

    by billyhitchcock

ok, so i'm the target audience, i may even like the film when i see it but this feels like trying to make something out of what shoulda been a foregone conclusion.

this film should've been rolled out nationwide, have a 10 mil opener and then crawl to 20/30.

opening it slowly is just trying grab whatever hype is possible from the people that would've seen it anyway, it'll just crawl to $20 mil even more slowly.

it's not a 'sensation', it's an average flick that got fucked over.

I used to work there. Great if you don't have bills to pay. Free movies, $1 hot dogs, 75 cent pop in the break room, and the occasional free posters. $6.75-7 was too little to pay any kind of rent or bills though. And the sporadic shifts sucked too. Hopefully you're a manager or something, if not then have fun sweeping up popcorn and serving idiots beverages. Also, I doubt this movie will be that popular, since it has been and really still is under the radar.

The Shat as a secret contact who gets them the plans to Skywalker Ranch? Kristen Bell in a Princess Leia Bikini?Seriously, how could anyone who came of age in the 80s not want to see this movie? Even if it is kind of suck?

Harry, Hate to Break it, but Look at the Numbers

    by freakemovie

I'm really sorry, but calling it a "cinderella story" is a bald-faced lie and Harry knows it. In 44 theaters, Fanboys grossed $171,500 in its opening weekend for a sub-par $3,898 average. (Usually an average of $5K or more is considered solid.) Last weekend, its second, it fell 56.5% to $74,599 in 41 theaters. It has currently made less than one third of one million dollars.
That said, I'm of course happy it's expanding because that means more people who want to see the film will be able to. I'm not sure if the expansion is contractually obligated or if the Weinstein Co. is just trying really hard to push this as a cult movie, but it's not because of its early box office performance. I'm be happy to eat my words if the film does surprisingly well in the secondary markets its going to, but as of now its hard to see a scenario in which it makes more than, say, $2 million.
