Promo trailer for DESCENT 2 closes in on you...

Published at:  Feb 13, 2009 8:49:59 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Without Neil Marshall's involvement, I can't really say the fanboy saliva gland is pumping on a sequel to THE DESCENT. I wish new director Jon Harris the best (he was editor on the first one) and I think it's interesting they got Shauna Macdonald and Natalie Mendoza back, but even after seeing the promo trailer at Bloody-Disgusting I can already say it's lacking something the first had. It could very well be a smaller production with more limited resources, but whatever it is there's something missing.

Now, I will say I was surprised that it looks as good as it does. I was expecting a cheesy direct to video vibe, but even though I think something is missing the flick still looks like it belongs on the silver screen.

So, check it out at the link below. I think you'll see they took the ALIENS structure and pretty much plopped in the surviving (and not) cast from the original. Why not? It works. Hopefully the final flick will be very fun.

That's not entirely true. The original ending everyone is "assumed" dead, and she's left in the darkness staring at the torch/cake while the creatures close in around her.... she doesn't escape the cave system in the film but we also don't see her die. So she could have survived... I wish she didn't, but she could have.

...but coulda been better. I thought that the film would have been much more interesting and terrifying if they had dropped the "monster" angle and instead focused on the real-life horror of getting lost in a maze of underground caves. Now THAT would have made for a truly frightening film!

let me guess, it's the old girl survives, recon group is dropped into place of death with survivor because she apparently is now a cave fucking expert, meets some girl who's family is dead, the whole recon group is killed, she magically survives the whole ordeal and the kid gets a face hugger while in a suspended state of sleep.

    by darthcorleone

It's fine if you don't like the movie and feel insulted, but you're missing a couple of levels of the film if you think Sarah killed Juno only because she slept with her husband. She also was motivated to kill her because she had lied to her about the death of their mutual best friend and left said friend to suffer. Additionally, Sarah was on the verge of complete insanity at that point because of the killing and her unlocked bloodlust, especially triggered by her killing of the mother and child creatures. You could see the psychological break in her eyes. (Hence, there is a double meaning to the title "The Descent.") Those two elements - in addition to the third you mentioned (and it was not just that Juno had slept with her husband - it was that she had not owned up to it and/or been a better friend to her after her husband's death) - combined into a single reactionary impulse. Under different circumstances, Sarah would have thought more rationally, and it's doubtful she would have killed Juno. However, in that single moment it makes perfect, terrible sense.

    Neil Marshall

    by thedarklinglord

I'm actually glad he isn't involved, because it would seem too much like, "Man, Doomsday was a colossal turd that nobody really liked. Time to run home to momma and pop out a sequel to one of my more successful films." That's the pussy route. He needs to redeem himself with a whole new project.

And, yes, he DOES need to redeem himself, because after Doomsday, I don't automatically tent my trousers at the thought of a new movie from him. He went the way of M. Night Shyamalan: two phenomenal movies followed by a seriously questionable piece of shit that called into question whether those first two were talent or luck and, if talent, if his load was spent and now, like a porn star with a horribly botched boob job, he has nothing left to offer society and he should just fucking kill himself. So, for me, his next movie is going to be critical; it'll either be an apocalyptic shitfest or cinematic salvation.

Oh, and Natalie Mendoza is just fucking yum. I could eat that bitch with a spoon.

How sad. I feel so sorry for supposed film fans that didn't realize just how amazing it was to have that film made at all.

Also, make sure you see the extended version, it's way better. Still like the original though.

And Aliens is a terrible movie. They went from a genuine sci fi horror movie to an all out action schlockfest, replete with some of the shallowest and stereotypical dialogue of the 80s, which is saying a lot. It really isn't a good model to follow, a la Hills Have Eyes Two.

PaulSeta is right - a lot of people don't "get" Doomsday

    by jazzdownunder

Doomsday is a piece of cinema "fun". It is a bit of fanboy worship where the story exists only to serve the need to throw in as many references to great genre movies as possible, whilst having fun but maintaining respect for the originals.

Marshall's talent shone through in Doomsday in the way that he was able to homage and tribute those sources without descending into imitation, parody or pastiche.

The ONLY thing wrong with it is the cabaret routine, which just goes on way too long.

Descent 2 shouldn't exist, but the ending of the original was sufficiently ambiguous (or can be interpreted as such) that it's not a "Bobby Ewing In The Shower" moment. But a lot of what made the original so compelling was the performances of the cast, some of whom reprise their roles here, so I'll be checking out Descent 2 to see if they can justify it's existence.

    by whinynegativebitch

Wow, how you manage to rape your own story like that with the shitty third act is amazing. BOTH endings were fucking awful. I was still amazed that such a crappy amateur director managed such a tight first two thirds though. That was pretty damn tight. Shame he fucked himself over with the lazy pile of homage junk Doomsday.
