Quick Cable Renewals For UNITED STATES OF TARA, BIG LOVE And RESCUE ME!!

Published at:  Feb 12, 2009 9:28:38 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Things are moving quickly on cable!

* "Juno" mastermind Diablo Cody's “The United States of Tara,” averaging 2.1 million viewers weekly (even when one excludes DVR and On Demand watching), got a second season after airing only three first-season episodes. (Compare this to sister show “Dexter,” which never got above one million viewers when its premiere season hit Showtime two years ago.)

* HBO just ordered “Big Love’s” fourth season just four episodes into season three.

* The fastest pickup, however, is “Rescue Me,” which just got a sixth season pickup even though its fifth season doesn’t launch on FX till April 7.

* Likely to get a quick pick-up also is “Important Things With Demetri Martin,” which with a 2.4 million viewer tune-in just notched the highest-rated Comedy Central premiere since the 2003 “Chappelle's Show” bow.

I only watched the USOT pilot

    by quin the eskimo

it was good. Didn't pursue as I thought the styelized dialog would just grate. Any thoughts?

    Agree about USOT

    by raromo

I actually thought I wouldn't enjoy the show, based on the teasers, but it really is quite good, in large part because it's more a drama than a comedy. (Although there are a lot of funny bits.) Definitely worth watching, and more good news for Showtime.

Will F/X air Rescue Me Season 5 complete or

    by ev1ldead

will they split it (like South Park) in 2 half seasons?
btw. I'm pretty sure Dexter got far over a million viewers with weekly numbers. Only the first run episodes didn't get over a million. ..and you can't compare Showtime numbers 3 years ago with todays numbers. Thx to the success of Dexter, Tudors and Weeds new series get much better numbers from the start. @ Tara It's not as great as Weeds or Californication but still pretty good. Toni Colette can already start to write her emmy speach.

I'm glad to see the pick up, but...

    by the mcpoyle clan

Rescue Me has shown that they don't do well when asked to produce that many episodes. I'm cautiously optimistic, but with 22 this season, and another 18 for next season, I have doubts Leary and Tolan can keep it focused, funny, and interesting.

"Rescue Me shown that they don't do well when asked to produce that many episodes"? All 4 seasons only had 13 episodes.

    "The Riches"

    by twinpeaks

KazamaSmokers - I agree with you. It is beyond stupid that FX renews Rescue Me before the season begins, but cancelled The Riches after months and months of dragging out their decision. The Riches is one of the best shows in the last five years...

    You're right.

    by the mcpoyle clan

I think I may have confused it with another show's season order or production schedule. But one thing I am sure of, S4 was a let down.

    Tara is Good?

    by _maltheus_

I wouldn't have expected that. Maybe I'll have to check it out. Glad to hear about Big Love, I didn't even realize that it started back up. As for the Martin show, a big premier means absolutely nothing more than it was one of the most heavily advertised shows in recent memory. And that certainly doesn't justify a pickup. I've still yet to see a clip that was even remotely funny. Obviously the dude has connections though, so it probably will get the pick up.

United States of Tara RADICALLY improves

    by gregoryharbin

The pilot episode was extremely, extremely, not good. But episode 2 is a HUGE improvement, and by episode 5, it's must-watch TV. Stick with it!

now that they are really going into character motivations and not trying to show polygamy as just an extension of the nuclear family

2for2true -- disagree on Riches vs. Damages

    by mockingbird girl

I also loved THE RICHES... but I think there was a distinct lack of cohesiveness in the 2nd season, as if the writers didn't know where to take the premise next. On the other hand, I think DAMAGES has actually improved in the 2nd season.

    They canceled The Riches?

    by liljuniorbrown

Fuck me! I didn't know that. Man, that sucks ass. FX is becoming the new WB. I hated Dirt, but I thought it could have used another season to improve and tie up the loose ends, and I guess now The Riches is toast. Fuck Fuck Fuck. I guess I'd better stop my enjoyment of Sons of Anarchy, that shit will be gone in a few weeks. Thank God for Reaper,Big Love, and Supernatural, thats all I have left.
