8-bit Minuteman Game made by Veidt? Want to plunk a quarter in?

Published at:  Feb 12, 2009 1:54:33 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Ok... I admit it. I am so incredibly giddy in love with this movie and the marketing that even though at this point, just 13 days away from seeing it (Yes, I'm a lucky bastard) - I just can't stop getting hyped up for it. I have all the books. I watch every second of footage I can find online... and now... Michael Bay's employee over at Collider.com sends me over an email pointing me in the direction of an 8-Bit 80s style scrolling punch, kick and jump game where you can play as two characters... and HOLY FUCK COOL, I can't stop playing it. TOO COOL. Way too cool. Can you get the High Score?

    BEST VIRAL EVER!!!

    by alucardvsdracula

Just like going back to 1985, or actually 1988 when the sideway scrolling beat em ups were at their peak. Although, technically, Kung Fu Master paved the way back in 1984 for games like Renegade (1986), Double Dragon (1987), Vigilante (1988), Bad Dudes (1988), Final Fight (1989) and finally Streets of Rage (which this it pretty much lifted from) in (1991). And by the way Streets of Rage was a 16-Bit game. So there. Oh shit I feel reeeeel olllld.

    Mr Nicholas it's NOT 1977, but 1985.

    by alucardvsdracula

  • Feb 12, 2009 2:58:15 AM CST

OOps, you were right it IS 1977, however...

    by alucardvsdracula

Although at first glance that does seem silly - we are in fact talking about an alternate universe were technology is way advanced than the real 1977 (or 85)then this makes sense, if you know the Watchmen universe that is. Either that or whoever put this together is just plain stupid - or fucking clever.

    by righteousbrother

There's a movie tie-in book out called Watchmen Portraits or something like that. And it features loads of portraits of all the cast and extras and the like, and there's a full page picture of Rorschach aka Walter Kovacs without his mask on - I haven't seen the picture anywhere online yet. He looks good, very similar to the comic character.

    by frisco

I have them too. You do know that Watchmen was published as a twelve-issue series, right? The DC Heroes pencil-and-paper RPG had a released a couple of Watchmen-themed supplements back around that time too, and of course they contained material that wasn't in the original comics--and written by Alan Moore too, iirc. So yeah: books. Plural.

    by photoboy

Although I'd say graphically and sonically it's 16-bit rather than 8-bit, in terms of gameplay it's clearly 8-bit (especially they way there's a jump button with no real use except to jump over Moloch's knives).

Bale does not exist in this dojo

    by cobra--kai

    The first BOOK OF BALE...

And lo on the 5000th post the Old Testament Of Bale did end.

Upon that cold February day the professional disciples of Bale did rip their calendars from the walls and did proceed to burn them in a great pyre.

For that time, that blessed time, would forever be known as BB (Before Bale) and that time which followed would thereafter be known as AB (After Bale).

When the professional disciples of Bale did inform the non-believers, communicating through the holy medium of talkback, there were some who would not listen. They would not post at 1000. They would not post at 2000, and still they would not post at 5000. They denied Bale thrice over. They were blind to Bale and worshipped the false idol of Yoko's Cool Cuts.

It was then that Bale sent his rage upon them so that all fuckin amateurs might see his power. He tore from the non-believers a new asshole so that all would be marked, and his professional brethren did delight in the shit storm that followed.

Here ends the first BOOK OF BALE. (get thee to the TERMINATOR talkback and post three times if ye would repent).

    final cut highlights

    by bacci40

    1. No Black Freighter, although we do catch glimpses of the newsstand and the kid who reads the comic, but only briefly.

    2. The ending is different, no squid. I was one of the people who never really cared about squid/no squid, but I feel the ending will work better for mainstream audiences that have never read the book.

    3. They do not imply a sequel anymore than the book does...

    4. The montage covering the heroes of the past is done exceptionally well, and was longer than I expected. Allows the audience to understand that this is an alternate version of the past and everything they know should be thrown out the window.

    5. It is dark, but not the stark realism that fills the Dark Knight. The Watchmen reality is a little more surreal in its feel, like a dream. It really has the feel of the comic in it.

    6. Look for the cameo by Snyder's son. He also played young Leonidas in 300.

    7. It was fantastically close to the book; even the framings of shots were lifted directly from the book.

    8. Jackie Earl Halley is the shit in this. He IS Rorschach.

    9. This movie is gory. I'm a gore hound and I was surprised at how graphic some scenes were. Really had people squirming.

    10. NAKED Sally Jupiter. (CORRECTION NAKED Silk Spectre)

    11. Only character I didn't like was Veidt/Ozymandias. I thought the actor was weak.

I have to say Snyder knocked this one out of the park. There is some gruesome, brutal stuff here that is hard to watch. The fight scenes are awesome, and, like in 300, Snyder continues the use of ramping the frame rate to accentuate the movements of the characters. I knew there was going to be some slo-mo, but I didn't think he overdid it. All in all, fans of the book are going to more than pleased with the film. For a book that was for years considered un-filmable, he certainly managed to hit almost every beat and did not compromise any of the material (except for the squid).

So there you have it folks, breaking news once again brought to you by yours truly. I cannot wait for the films release; it will definitely up the ante for comic book adaptations in the future.

Dingbatty, don't say that, people never understand.

"The Intellevision was 16-bits" - "But.. it was like an Atari! Those were, like, 4 bits or something." - And then I sigh deeply and go back to my lone tower of isolation, being part of the 0.0001% of the world that has a brain.

So, how are you getting 40,000+ points?! I am around 23,000ish and have kicked and punched everything. Secret areas or what?

video game game graphics weren't quite that advanced in 1985 (but of course this is supposed to be an ALTERNATE history)

How the hell did they score so high?

    by immortal_fish

Played through twice. Took down every enemy and smashed every obstacle without losing life. For some reason, I can't get anywhere as near a high score as others clearly did. There must be a multiplier somewhere that I keep missing. Anyone know what's up?

It was a sidescroller and you could "walk" upward and down on the streets as well as move left and right. What a great, great game that was. Really pushed the engine. The sprites blinked like a bitch, though.

    High scores - SPOILER

    by immortal_fish

Just played thru again. I think I may have figured it out. Man, I feel like a dunce. When you reach Moloch, stay as far "down" on the screen as you can (in the foreground). Moloch continues to throw knives, but he can't get to the same plane as your character. Then it's just a matter of defeating the enemies that spawn from left-of-screen.
