But it's really starting to pile on the continuity. I still think Olivia is way too fucking bland to be on-screen as much as she is, and tonight's climactic moment was so telegraphed it was almost sad, but it's definitely trying, at least, and succeeding more often than not.

can he teleport? because he was definitely on the plane in last weeks episode. (and the plane crashed.) and yes he was at the news stand. i didnt notice the blue/green flash this week, but im sure it was there and i just missed it. i thought the last episodes since they came back from hiatus we're a bit lackluster, but this was a return to form.. of course im like everyone else here who was pretty surprised at the end of this episode to hear "Coming in April, when Fringe returns.." dammit.

    They Need To Keep Jones

    by crow3711

I hope whatever terrible thing that happened to him when he was ripped through the hospital wall (I'm guessing he was ripped into another dimension perhaps?) But I really hope they find a way to get him back. I think that character really adds a lot to the show and every episode he has been in has been great. I'd really like to see Walter and Jones have a few more conversations. They seem quirky enough to get along.

    by jor-el23

Of fucking piece of shit American Idol. The most irritating thing is Fringe just comes back from a holiday hiatus and now it's gone.

But tonight was great, the mythology of the show is coming into focus. So Walter wrote the ZFT manifesto but obviously forgot about it until tonight's episode.

What I don't get is this, but maybe I'm missing something. The ZFT manifesto is basically saying technology will destroy us and yet so far everyone that seems to seems to be associated with them are using technology forbwhatever it they're trying to do.

Do they just WANT us to stop watching and wait for dvd?American Idol can't be the reason--it has been on for weeks in parallel with Fringe.Morons.It might be worth just skipping all first seasons--buy the dvds for season 1 (they don't come out until S2 starts, usually) and then just watch straight thru.

    by necgray

I watched the first couple of episodes of the show and gave up because Walter was too "wacky senile scientist". I felt it came off very twee and manufactured. Has that aspect of his character chillaxed at all, or are we still watching Walter the Wonder Weirdo be artificially eccentric?

    by crow3711

I agree sometimes its a little manufactured because it has to be in every episode, but he makes me burst out laughing at least once an episode, usually more. Everyone has their own tolerance of these things, but I do think it has gotten more refined since the first few episodes. Tonight, the first time he mentioned the coffee cake over the dead body got me pretty good.

    by blackbauer0320

I've just hooked onto this in the last few weeks and it's been getting better each week. I really like the story arc and background that they're starting to build behind some of the characters. The revelations of Walter and Dunham in particular were very interesting, as is the Jones character. I dunno what it is though, Dunham's face just doesn't sell it. She's very bland and the one facet of the show not growing on me. I'll keep tuning ini though.

Fringe Does Harvey Birdman Unabooboo joke !

    by g100

It's true! Harvey Birdman discovers the anti-capitalist manifesto written by the sociopathic Unabooboo was written on his typwriter by a displaced T. (though he has to manually displace it. :D )
Fringe IS good stuff. John Noble does a splendid job as in the hands of a less able actor it WOULD be a Jim Carreyesque/Doc. Brown/12monkeys Brad Pitt "manic" psychotic with flashes of Genius. And that's part of the "Olivia problem" as her blandness is excacerbated by the contrast between her and Noble.
Nice setup though with a slightly more advanced "earth 2" beaming across dimensions and interfering with and eventually warring to the death with our dimension. We might even see this alternative Dimension which is more advanced than ours. That could prove VERY intriguing.
Of course.. we can't quite be definitive and say that REALLY IS the actual conspiracy yet. It's possible it might just be a ruse or misdirection. (doubt it though)

the accident that got Walter committed was the teleportation of his evil twin from another universe.

the evil twin is responsible for all of the tech and Dynamic rise to power.

Also I am thinking Peter is Walter's clone or one is from the future.

This has to be a record for the most shows in primetime that have time travel. Heroes, Fringe, Lost, etc.

    by gotilk

.. is just a set of clues to the coming ZFT apocalypse. They seem to be saying that this pattern or.. singularity may be something more than the end of novelty and the beginning of the amazing being the almost impercievable and mundane. Maybe it will open the door to something much bigger than teleporting replicators and the immortal uploadable brain. Warring parallel universes? Nice.
(btw, aicn spell checker? you got a screw loose or two.. in fact teleporting AND uploadable are real words and here they are spelled correctly)

Are probably the best part of the show. I'm not a huge Josh Jackson fan, and I never watched DC, but the on screen chemistry and writing are very good, funny and walter is still crazy, but not as bad as he was in the 1st 3 eps, cause shaking of 17 years in an asylum takes time, even on tv.

this show may have started off a little bland but it has been consistently good, and is getting better exponential as the season progresses. the best part is - that the seed of awesomeness that was this episode was planted at the beginning. there is no sense of them pulling shit out of their asses. the groundwork was laid properly.

I agree Astrid is given little to do but am thinking along the lines that she will turn out to be a double agent of sorts from the future. As for Dunham the most shocking thing I recently found out is she is actually married to the guy who played her partner (John) in real life. Most bizarre as I never for a moment have brought into there relationship on the show. I actually would go easy on her but then I compare her to Gillian Anderson whon was always awsome on X-files, in a way made me appreciate her turn on that show more however ridiculous the crazy plot of the week was.

    Dunham blows.

    by thedarklinglord

Now, I freely admit that I'm not a big fan of female leads because they're generally not written convincingly or they're written as these hardcore badasses who are supposed to be dangerous and sexy but only come across as snotty bitches who seem overly full of themselves and their badassery. Like some shitty Angelina Jolie character. That said, they occasionally get the female character right, both in writing and casting, and you get someone who's interesting and engaging, able to strike that balance between being skilled/competent at their work with the requisite hardness about them while maintaining the necessary touch of humanity that makes them appealing in a feminine sense.

Olivia Dunham, however, isn't one of those characters in my opinion. She's not a particularly compelling character, often coming across as a whiny bitch when nobody wants to listen to her, and an emotional weakling when dealing with the shit about her partner/lover. She's not quite annoying, though she straddles the line at times, but she's probably my least favorite character on the show. And I'm sorry, but Anna Torv isn't all that attractive (to me, anyway) so she doesn't even garner sympathy and interest through her sex appeal. (The chick who played her sister, on the other hand, was kinda hot and definitely would have been more engaging for me.)

I do agree that Astrid is criminally underused. Not sure if it's just her personality or what, but I wish she was the lead. She seems to offer so much more warmth and likeability than Anna/Olivia.

    As for Walter...

    by david lazarus long

I think his character is quite consistently eccentric. He ALWAYS is reminded of food by each case. I think he just liked to snack while he did his research. Hell, if they start feeding him random things it might have a reverse effect, allowing him to remember experiments/tech he invented while binging on moonpies and twinkies and such. Also, I LOVE HIM. It's probably got to do with the fact that he is an EXACT DUPLICATE of my father, except my father was a pioneering computer electronics engineer, and Walter cuts people open and builds time machines. Also why I sympathize with Peter so much. There are so many times during their interactions that I'm like, "Yea, dude. I've been there."

I love this entire show in general. It's like X-Files on crystal meth, with a somewhat planned out mythology from the start, and it's balancing the "day-to-day" case stuff of "the Pattern" well with the core story of *why Olivia is special* and the growing mysteries that are building the mythos. And hell, I'll go ahead and disagree with EVERYONE. I like Anna Torv. She's appealing, while not overly hot and bimbo-esque (I think the above poster just has a problem with women in pant-suits. That was the ONLY difference between Olivia and her sister.) The thing I like most about her? She GETS THE FUCKING JOB DONE. Fuck your red tape and FUCK YOU, I've got shit to do. I really, really, REALLY can't wait until she pops that FBI guy right in the face. If he were an ice-cream flavor, he'd be pralines and dick.

The hour and a half pilot was awesome and introduces the show and characters quite well. The next 5 episodes are stand alones, and vary in quality, only episode 4 "The Arrival" has any relevance to the larger arc. Episode 7 "In which we meet Mr. Jones" through episode 11 tell a complete story and are all terrific episodes. Ep 12 was a weak stand alone, skippable, ep 13 closes out the dead boyfriend arc started in the pilot, which brings us to last nights ep 14 continuing the Jones story, and obviously setting up more with the 9 remaining "tests".

Still, very funny. The mention of the other dimension people make the show make more sense to me. All the super high tech viruses, equipment and stuff that has been used has been used for fairly minor stuff story wise. Why show off your superior weapons & tech for minor gains? I think they're using it out in the open to recruit 'warriors' and alert the authorities that weird shit from another dimension is coming. Did Walter write the manifesto or did his lab partner, who is now head of Massive Dynamics do it on the lab typewriter? It'd make sense he wrote it and now is recruiting for the fight against.... the Invaders from Dimension X!!!!!

I can't really remember the exact quote but when Walter was reading the manifesto, in a VO as Olivia was going to that amusement park, he said something about a series of seemingly unrelated events would begin to occur that would lead up to this war or whatever. Theories...

    by bubbatwo420

First off, this show is incredible. Easily my favorite new show in past couple years. Some things that occured to me after watching last night:

    1) Could Walter have written the ZFT manifesto and be the leader? It shows him using the same kind of typewriter at the end.

2)Massive Dynamic lady's hand got better when Olivia stopped the bomb. Is she somehow linked to the progression of these events, almost like a clone or puzzle being completed?

    3) The idea that future civilizations are destroying our way of life through their time travel technology is cool. But could these fringe experiments be the cure and not the problems?

    Peter turned off the lights!!

    by seanmiller

I am surprised no one mentioned this earlier, but wasn't Peter the one who used his mind to turn off the lights, not Olivia? In almost every episode Walter makes some comment about Peter's hidden potential. Walter must have done some crazy expirements on Peter when he was a kid. They both have forgotten about it, but I think it is clear that Peter is the "special" one, not Olivia. Walter was probably preparing Peter to be the leader of his army.

Also, I like Anna Torv. It took about 10 episodes, but she has one me over and continues to get better looking every episode. I like the idea of Astrid being a double agent/cyborg. Lastly, Walter rules and provides get comic relief.

    by decypher44

Against popular opinion, I think Anna Torv is fantastic. John Noble as Walter is so much FUN to watch. The story line keeps getting stronger (and stranger). The production values are top notch. I just hope that these long breaks don't have too much of a negative impact on the ratings.

Also, on last nights episode, I loved at the end when Walter Bishop realized that the book was written from his typewriter. However, I believe it was written by William Bell when he worked with Walter and used that typewriter.

    Astrid...

    by furzee

Is clearly going to wind up being tied to the Pattern, in a bad bad way. Think about it...She has access to the Bishops, Duhnim and the lab, every pattern case, and has anyone else noticed that the camera keeps lingering on her every time she speaks or observes Walter? Not to mention that if you pay close attention, John Scott references her in an aside to his cohort in the ep where Olivia goes back in the tank to remember something about his undercover crap. She will be the 'Big Reveal' this season. As far as Olivia, I think she looked kinda hot last night when she was trying to buy that bioweapon from the foriegn dude. She's an FBI agent, for God's sake. I actually know a female FBI agent and Torv kinda nails the character, from what my friend tells me. Anyway great show!

I thought that also but then didnt Dr Jones/Instruction manual mention you had to be within a certain distance of the lights for it to work.I think Peter might have been too far.One other thing the MD Lady initially witheld the fact that the drug was also given out to residents at the Florida Base, perhaps to put Dunham off from giving the whole light thing a go and thus being on her to fully fledged warrior/resistance fighter status. When she realised it was too late anyway she then calls up and drops it into conversation, so the glow white glass pda never had that info on? I am betting on Walt(the reason to watch this show) being the leader here and his old lab mate and Ceo of MD being the leader of the alternate universe folks.I wonder who they have in mind to play William Bell?

Fringe's first season isn't as consistently good as that of Lost's first season, but I don't know if any show can ever be as good as Lost was in it's first season. But there are some really great elements of Fringe that are worth checking out. And while the first season hasn't been as good as Lost's was, I still find myself engrossed in every episode

    by stabby

I'm starting to dig it, but there are some glaring problems with the show. The number one being the lead actress as many have mentioned. That there is already such a large consensus on this means that she is a negative. Next, Fringe is basically The X Files meets House. I don't have a problem with the blatant rip off of the X Files, because I loved that show and this show fills the gap for me. I just wish that Fringe was as successful with its elements of horror as X Files was. The best thing in the show is Walter and Peter is tolerable and likable. But, they are supporting characters. Dunham is the lead and when the action moves to her the show dies. I wish they had picked an actress like Carla Gugino who has experience in the genre being the only good thing in Threshold. Most network shows hinge on a great lead character. As it stands now I see only tow options get a new lead or make the show about Walter.

    by seanmiller

I missed the part about having to be close to lights in order to make them go off. Still...the show made a point to show Peter coming back to the room. If he didn't turn off the lights, what is everyone's theory as to his importance to the overall pattern/war? He can't just be a baby sitter with awesome connections to shady people. Walter messed Peter up good as a kid. Another theory...what if William Bell is the good guy who had Walter locked up to halt his invasion of this dimension.

Good call on the House comparison

    by jor-el23

I don't really like that show...in fact I hate it, but last night I was thinking the same thing about House. Every week there's some crazy thing that happens to some victim and Walter finds a cure for it. I guess part of the reason he finds a cure is because he's responsible in some way for this bad stuff that happens. I still like Fringe because of the sci-fi aspect and because of building mythology.

As for Anna Torv, I guess I'm in the minority of people who don't mind her...and since learning that she's Australian I'm liking her more. Say what you will about her acting or whatever but I had no idea she was Australian so she's hiding that pretty well

    Dunham and the lights

    by karmakitten13

I know I am the minority here, but I think Dunham is a fine lead. She is a more realistic FBI agent then we normally see on tv. Trained to be methodical and by the book which by default makes her colder in nature. If she was a fluttery typical woman type I wouldn't buy her in the role.

    by allykatd

The ending was the big 'oh whoa' moment for me when Walter was going through the manifesto and then went to the type writer and the type matched. At first I thought HE wrote it and just forget, but now I'm thinking that it has to be William Bell? This show has been a bit slow, but I've been faithfully watching it because I like Walter and Peter (we need more of them) but now I'm starting to like Olivia which I haven't liked that much at all. But they're making her more interesting. So the question remaining is did she or didn't she make the lights go out. She seems to think she didn't. Does anyone else think they're under utilizing Peter Bishop? With all the bombs his father has dropped about him I'm surprised there hasn't been any real Peter-centric episodes.

    by allykatd

She is okay, and as I said above I'm starting to like her, but she can't pull off a lead like say Jennifer Gardner in "Alias". Torv doesn't have that onscreen charisma that Gardner did. Still, I think Walter and Peter are written as more interesting character, however with last nights reveal maybe Olivia won't be so darned bland.

    by pancho straight

And I mean that in a good way: I love Fringe and I loved Alias.Torv is attractive without being conventionally pretty, just like Mrs. Affleck. And Olivia was selected to be special as a child, just like Sydney Bristow. The differnce was, Alias began as an espionage spoof series and evolved into a sci-fi fantasy show, which annoyed the original fans. Fringe began as a sci-fi series, with spy show elements, right from the start.

    by pancho straight

It seemed to me that Test #1 was a box full of lights with an on/off switch and the challenge was to turn the lights off without touching it. Well, wasn't Olivia in a room with three other people? couldn't she just have asked Peter, Walter of Astrid to flip the switch for her? Then the lights could have gone off without her touching them. Even when the guy she was interrogating told her the key to the test was learning to cooperate, that seemed to hint to that being the correct solution. Even if that was the wrong solution, shouldn't someone have at least thought of it?

Can't understand why some of you don't see that the character is written to be a normal FBI agent thrown into a crazy situation. She's not an undercover agent playing a roll where she can act all nutty. She's not bland just laid back , she's an agent. She's also a piece of ass. Great hair and eyes and um eyebrows. Anna Torv/Olivia

    by allykatd

I think since I'm female I'm looking past the "she's hot" to the core of the character. Every so often we get cool glimpses of her like that time she went drinking with Peter at the bar. But most the time it seems that life just gets in the way of her work and that's all she's about. I do like they've brought a more human aspect to her with the introduction of her sister, but really, they need to make Olivia more relatable. They made Dana Scully the straight one of the Fox/Mulder relationship but she wasn't bland or boring. So what's the difference? Is it the actress and her acting? Is it the way she's being written? I don't know but she just isn't a Sydney Bristow or Dana Scully for me.

    It's a good enough show

    by veritasses

but it could be and should be much better. High production values and obviously talented people working the lights, music etc. But they're just not creating what's appropriate for the material... it could be they're misguided. Sort of like hearing a full blown John Wiliams score in a light, coming of age, romantic comedy... the music is sure to be good but it's likely to feel out of sync with the material.

But the biggest area where Fringe could and should see improvement is in the acting. Especially Torv. In all fairness, she's actually shown improvement and she's obviously trying hard which is more than what I can say for most actors. But her character serves as the focal point and thus needs to be solid. Unfortunately, she's missing key opportunities to give her character dimension and life. Much of it is in the "small", subtle and/or non-verbal things like how she reacts to what another character says or what she does in the beats or how she "wears" emotion etc. Having her character show emotional depth and variety is essential for the show but she's not quite there. It just doesn't come across as credible. I should clarify though that I don't mean that she should be on an emotional rollercoster. She can play her character as "cold" or subdued if she wants but still show range and make it feel natural instead of stiff. Yesterday's episode was a good show to break down her acting since she was in a position to interact with all the other major characters, each in a different way.

While it's not really a series driven by character, just improving how she interacts with the other characters would go a long way to highlighting (what should be) interesting relationships and improving the show several fold. The writers haven't given her a ton of material to work with but there's been more than enough for her to create a richer character. I think she's capable though, and will get there in time.

It goes without saying that John Noble is excellent. Jared Harris too. All the other actors need to step it up a notch. Better supporting characters will help Torv develop her's and make for a much better show.

Fringe has got better. BUT... it can be so much better if the writers start going twilight zone on the premise. Whats the real story on the lab cow?! What has the mad scientist really done?! Apparently a few episodes there was a direct nod to Ellis' Desolation Jones. They talked about a scientist called Doctor Fisher who bombarded someone with imagery to mess with their mind, just like Jones. They've had a few ideas Ellis would have had. Denham and Other Things

    by flem_snopes

Part of the problem with her may be direction, and to a lesser extent how she struggles mightily with doing a convincing American accent. She has gotten much better as the episodes have gone on, though. Was kind of weird seeing her pander to Joshua Jackson like a little girl--twice!--and I thought that it was an effort on the writers/director's part to try to flesh her out. I think the episode where she broke out of captivity and showed she was a bad-ass fighter was another attempt to flesh her out. I agree with one of the posters above, I would NOT like to see romantic tension between Peter and Olivia. A big cliche and hard to sustain in an open ended series. If you consummate it, it's dead and there's nowhere to go. If you keep the tension going for too long, it loses credibility. And that stupid ass harassment guy has GOT TO GO! Totally irrelevant and right now the worst part of the show. As far ratings, I consistently hear throughout the trade press that there are two breakout hits of the new television season, "The Mentalist" and "Fringe" although I am sure with Fringe's production budget that is no guarantee for anything, except that it will be back next season, for sure. Dumb move breaking the continuity until April, though. That never helps ratings. Ever.

For example, Chyna (the wrestler) would seem to be an obvious popular female B-movie action star, instead Kristanna Loken gets the work. Though I'm sure a lot of the guys here would deny it, I bet this "rejection" of Torv has more to do with her looks than her acting. The moment Torv goes undercover and does an episode as a hot call girl, or starts wearing more makeup and gets a breast job, the opinion of her "acting skills" will remarkably improve.

    Torv IS perfect

I completely agree, Elcabio. Due to my acting background (in the business for more than 30 years with education to match), I state without hesitation that Torv's skill and talent are both excellent. She is a highly competent actress. A lot of TB folks are confusing "natural" for "bland": I believe. Not surprising considering that the two Bishops--especially Walter--are both eccentric, character roles which read much more broadly than the "straight woman" Olivia. For the record, I think John Noble is the real standout acting-wise. His Walter has so many layers of complexity (childlike fascination; deep regret; explosive bursts of passion; sinister obsession). Noble (a master character actor) is a true joy to watch in this role.I liked X-fILES, but I have the potential to love FRINGE. And though there are obvious similarities in plot infrastructure to X-FILES, FRINGE is not at all derivative of that show and is getting less like it as time goes by. For one thing, the episodes are hanging together as one large story to a much greater and coherent degree than X-FILES ever did. FRINGE is hitting all the right buttons for me. No complaints thus far.
