The Juice on MYSTERY MEN
Hey folks, Harry here. The shockingly humongous per screen averages of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT has forced some moving on the ol release schedule this summer. DEEP BLUE SEA moved up a couple of days... and Mystery Men moved back to AUGUST 6th... which is curious because that's the same day that it was ORIGINALLY supposed to come out. Hmmmmm.... Kinda pointless juggling eh? Well, here's the Juice...
Mystery Men is one stupid movie, but it is damn enjoyable. The
superhero satire isnt the funniest movie of the summer (ranks behind Austin
Powers, South Park, and American Pie on my list), but it is the most visually
satisfying comedy of the year. Champion City is a virtual masterpiece, while
the sets and costume design are first rate. The eye candy in this movie is
primed, obvioulsy made with time (well maybe not from what i hear) and money.
Two things made this movie, visuals, and novelty of characters. These are the
most inventive characters since the original Austin Powers. The superheroes
(Mr Furious, Invisible Boy, Blue Raja, The Shovler, The Bowler, The Sphinx,
and The Spleen) really do make this movie. The acting is good as well as the
chemistry between the characters. Unfortunately the low point of this movie
is the villains. Casanova Frankenstein is well played by the talented Rush,
but unfortunately the character is underwritten, no real motives, no real
story just boring im going to kill you shit. With better writing Casavona
could have rivaled Dr. Evil (ok maybe not rivaled but have been a close
second). Even Pras and the other disco boys are as stale as their style. I
agree with Moriarity that the new end is good, and fitting, i didnt see the
original but they did well with the final cut.
Anyways I really liked this movie, it kept me interested and most
importantly it made me laugh. Keep in mind there is nothing in this movie
that will make you completely split your side open, instead there are many
well written gags that get a good reaction from the audience. This is more of
a entertaining movie than just a comedy...
Until sunday bloody sunday, The Juice says later...

Just wanted to talk back to prevent some moron from bragging about being first. Also I wanted to announce a new name for my subject line. Since I am stealing this "divine privleage" of being first from people I crown myself Robin Hood, and so that will be my subject till I can think of a better one. Also I invite anyone else who wishs to share in my quest to rid talkback of the subject line "I'm first!!!", to use Robin Hood to achieve this goal. To battle. INTO GLORY RIDE!!!

I'm first! I'm first! OOOooooh yes! First first first!
Oh. No I'm not -
The cast is impeccable, but there's no way this movie is going to be anything more than a moderately amusing spectacle that fails to live up to its promise. The Blair Witch juggernut is going to annihilate everything in its path (including Runaway Bride and Deep Blue Sea) which is justified because it's a damn good film that deserves recognition. The only other film I'm looking foward to this summer is The Iron Giant.

Meteor Man, Blankman, Mystery Men, Batman and Robin! I don't know about anyone else, but I am SICK and TIRED of stupid "humorous" superhero movies. When are we going to get a serious attempt at a superhero movie? Where is the new Superman? Where is a halfway decent Batman? Is that X-Men thing EVER getting made? As for Spiderman, I sense YET ANOTHER humor movie....Personally, my dream is a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie, written by Kevin Smith (or someone else competent) and directed by...well...NOT Burton or Schumacher. As for "Mystery Men", I'll see it on video so I can avoid wasting $15-$20 on tickets and food.

I thought that movie crashed and burned in the box office? That was by far one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. The only thing that was funny was when that weird shemale guy asked if the aliens that sex organs. AHAHAHAHAHA!! ::hoohoo:: Ah well, that movie really blew. And Rodimus Prime is definately right on about Batman and Robin being a comedy.

You should really check out the Countdown to Mystery Men (http://www.countingdown.com/mysterymen/main.htm) to see what people are saying about this movie and look at some of the merchandise they've got. I had no desire to see it at first but it looks much better than it sounds after checking it out here.

When I went to see the screening of this film, I was really uncertain as to whether or not it would be any good. But it REALLY won me over after the first couple of scenes. It is entertaining as hell, and it is NOT a gag movie. This is actually a pretty witty ensemble script piece that does NOT rely on sight gags. The superhero humor is really funny too, and anyone who digs comic books will probably have a good time at this film. Oh yeah... Remember to ignore Universal's marketing campaigns. This is the studio that made "Out of Sight" look lame and "The Mummy" look cool.

I doesn't seem like the critics of Mystery Men have ever read Bob Burden's masterpiece. People have criticized MM for being another stupid humorous super-hero movie, or for not allowing the actors to display their whole potential. Well, people, that's the whole point! Bob Burden wrote Mystery Men to be crazy, insane style humor. The characters in MM are never developed, and their motive are never exactly reavealed, as it should be. From what I've heard, the characters in the movie are the same, as their motivations aren't really revealed, as it SHOULD BE@! Read the comic and you'll see, it's SUPPOSED to be funny and undeveloped, it's crazy insane funny. 'Nuff said.

This movie is right up there on the "can't wait" list along with South Park (which was SOOO good). I like crazy plots with simple but likeable characters because that can really really work. Hell, I loved Mars Attacks. The point of these movies is to be entertaining, just a fun thing to watch and get into, and they're still rare so at least you know it's not going to be formula Hollywood crap. Maybe I'll eat my words but with that group of actors and the wonderful look of the film, MM may end up kicking ass.

"Self, what woud Brian Boitano do, in a situation like this?" (I'd bet he'd kick an ass or two, yeah, that's probably what Brian Boitano would do. . .)
