Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals!?! Eckhart, Heard and Jenkins join Depp in RUM DIARY!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I heard there was a lot of activity around this project at the European Film Market... I mean, why not? A movie starring Johnny Depp can't be all that hard to sell to foreign markets, right?
I'm an unabashed die hard fan of FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. That came out the same year as THE BIG LEBOWSKI and both films were criminally dismissed by audiences and critics alike. I fell in love with both instantly and saw them multiple time in the theaters and have since watched them both dozens of times on DVD. FEAR AND LOATHING is one of my comfort movies.
So, I've been waiting for ages for Depp to return to Hunter S. Thompson territory and it looks like it's finally happening. Depp will play Paul Kemp, a '50s journalist in Puerto Rico and they also have lined up Aaron Eckhart to play Kemp's rival for the affections of Ms. Amber Heard (hottie-bo-bottie). THE VISITOR and BURN AFTER READING's Richard Jenkins will be Kemp's boss at the paper, a guy named Lotterman.
I remember there being a rumor a while back that Benicio del Toro was actually going to direct this adaptation. I don't see any mention of that in the Hollywood Reporter article, but we do get Bruce Robinson behind the camera. If you've seen WITHNAIL & I you know why that's great news.
Filming begins at the end of March. Thoughts?

but it's no Fear and Loathing. Good to see a decent cast getting involved.
-
He's not in the book, so why would he be in the movie?
-
begin unnoriginal lion or bat quotes below this post.
-
I finished the book on a train on the way to a trade show when I was a journalist, and it inspired me so much I spent the day getting drunk on free booze and not doing any work - then woke up on the floor of a police cell covered in my own vomit. ROCK & ROLL! Can't wait to find out what the movie makes me do.
-
Woohoo! Jodorowsky, Philip Ridley, Joe Dante, Terrence Malick and Bruce Robinson all making new films in 2009 - a victory for cinema, I'm sure you will all agree.
-
Thought: Please!
-
Bruce Robinson.Bollocks to Avatar "fucking my eyeballs", Robinson directing again is the coolest film news I've had in years.
-
Went and looked it up. For a while there Benicio was looking to DIRECT this movie. That was supposed to be the reteam. I've fixed the article...
-
let us not forget it's the return to directing for Bruce Robinson! far out
-
Just started reading this a week or two ago, can't wait to see Depp beating on that old guy on the plane at the begining.
-
Any film adaptation of one of his books should be excellent. I completely agree about the 'Las Vegas' film.
Here is an HST parody you may enjoy:

Great book. Been waiting for this one.
-
Thompson was really young when he originally wrote this story. It wasn't published until much later and he became successful.
Still, even though it is not as well written as some of his other works, it successfully captures the world of 1950's Puerto Rico. I could imagine myself living there, drinking cheap rum and cheaper hamburgers in the makeshift bar.
I cannot wait. -
Is casting genius. This is going to be fantastic.
-
Glad to see him getting more exposure. I watch "Thank You For Smoking" every damn time it comes on TV.
-
NEEDS to be the follow up to this! Fear, Rum Diary, and this would make a WONDERFUL Gonzo trilogy. After all, "If anything is worth doing it's worth doing right godammit."
-
I'm just wasting bandwidth to drive the joy home.
-
That would make such a sweet trio. It's still one of my favourite books.
-
Man this is one of my favorite books. I cannot WAIT to see Amber Heard dancing naked with a bunch of sweaty Carnival revelers in a seedy bar.
-
When I saw Heard, I thought they were digging John Heard out of mothballs. Man hasn't worked since the Pegasus went down.
-
Rum Diary is far from HST's best work. It is a nice story, but not good enough to turn into a movie. Paul Kemp is not Raoul Duke. Other than seeing Amber Heard naked, why should this even be made? Hell, even Lono would be more interesting.
-
Confession: Rum Diary is the only HST book I've read and I thought it was brilliant. Seems like many people here aren't impressed with it. I must be missing out on his other work.
-
..enjoyed the Fear & Loathing movie, but I don't see how this book can make an interesting movie. But I'll still see it and hope that I'm wrong.
-
Will Depp portray the character in rum as a Gonzo figure, or will it be a pre-Gonzo experience? Anyone know, not to familiar with the book?
-
Anyone else see him on Jon Stewart when TOWELHEAD came out? Dude came off like the biggest fucking asshole.
-
Very pumped. I read Hell's Angels my first year of college and was hooked. The rum diary is one of the few book both my wife and I read together. Ditto on the comfort movie thing...well that and Purple Rain...
-
dariusz wolski is shooting it
-
He should have made it ten years ago...the character he's playing is Hunter in his mid-late twenties.
-
those actors are interchangeable. i do like me some fear and loathing tho. excellent all around.

WHAT KIND OF RAT-BASTARD PSYCOTIC WOULD PLAY THAT SONG RIGHT NOW
by tallboy66
Sure, Hunter is younger in Rum Diary (as far as I know) but Depp is ageless. Depp back in Thompson's gear = genius. Everyone watch the GONZO documentary that Depp narates, great stuff.
-
He isn't playing Hunter in here, but I'm sure he'll still bring the same vibe. He damn well better!!
-
with Benicio attached but I thought it was for acting. I would have loved to see him and Aaron together again. That scene in The Pledge is soooo good. I just watched it again the other night. Anywho, yeah, whatever, I'm there.
I also loved Fear and Loathing and used to beg people to see it when it was in theaters and they all got pissed at me because they thought it sucked. I wonder what happened to those people.... -
Some people forget that Rum Diary is actually FICTION...it is based on actual places and events in Hunter's life but it IS fictional. He drinks A LOT and experiments with acid and smokes dope...it's not as drug influenced AS Fear and Loathing but it is the start of Gonzo. I really recommend the oral history biography and the Documentary about him too. I hope the "drunk monkey" makes it into the movie, a very hilarious and very surreal part of the book.

I'm uber late on this talkback but I'm homicidally excited to see the return of J.Depp as a Thompson character. Timr to break out the jar of ether.
