Cartoon Network Picks Up Second Season of CLONE WARS animated series!

Published at:  Feb 09, 2009 10:52:22 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I have to say, I hadn't been following the series after being slapped about by that excruciatingly terrible CLONE WARS animated feature - but about a week ago, when I was thinking about FANBOYS - I decided to take a look at the series. A friend of mine's episode he wrote is coming up and I decided... let's see how the show is and I have to say. I really enjoyed it. In particular - the episode on the snowy planet was quite striking. I had heard that the further into the series it got, the better it was, but at this point I am really looking forward for the first season BluRay so I can just sit back and enjoy them all. For those of you that have been following, here's some good news for you...

Cartoon Network Picks Up Second Season of Lucasfilm Ltd.’s
STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS Television Series

Groundbreaking Series Ranks #1 in Its Time Period With All Boys Demos Across All Television—Broadcast and Ad-Supported Cable, 2008 and January 2009

After debuting to record numbers and claiming the #1 series across the entire basic cable landscape in 2008 and through January 2009 with boys 6-11, Cartoon Network announced today that it has picked-up a second season of the hit CG-animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, from creator George Lucas and Lucasfilm Animation. Slated to premiere in the fall of 2009, the second season will continue to take audiences on new and exciting adventures, combining the legendary storytelling of Lucasfilm with innovative animation. The season one finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars airs on Cartoon Network Friday, March 20 at 9 pm ET/PT.

“Star Wars: The Clone Wars is like nothing else on television and has delivered for us on all levels,” said Stuart Snyder, President/COO Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media. “It has helped us launch a great new night of action-adventure on Fridays and build on our dominance with boys. We look forward to continuing what has been a great relationship with George and everyone at Lucasfilm.”

"We're trying to push the envelope even further in the second season," said George Lucas. "In the features, I focused on telling the story of the Skywalker family. With The Clone Wars I'm exploring far beyond that and we barely scratched the surface in the first season. It's exciting to be able to take people to all these new places in the Star Wars galaxy."

The October 3, 2008 premiere of Star Wars: The Clone Wars scored as the most-watched series debut in Cartoon Network history, according to Nielsen Media Research. Since its premiere, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Friday 9 p.m.) has ranked #1 in its time period on all television—broadcast and ad-supported cable—with boys 2-11, boys 6-11, and tween boys 9-14 through January 2009.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars showcases an entirely new look and feel to the galaxy far, far away, combining the expansive scope of the Star Wars saga with state-of-the-art computer-generated animation. Each week, viewers see a thrilling, 30-minute “mini-movie” created by the talented artists at Lucasfilm Animation.

On the front lines of an intergalactic struggle between good and evil, fans young and old join favorite characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala, along with brand new heroes like Anakin’s padawan learner, Ahsoka. Sinister villains—led by Palpatine, Count Dooku and General Grievous—are poised to rule the galaxy. Stakes are high, and the fate of the Star Wars universe rests in the hands of the daring Jedi Knights. Their exploits lead to the action-packed battles and astonishing new revelations that fill Star Wars: The Clone Wars. With a new story each week, Star Wars: The Clone Wars continues the tradition of thrilling stories, astonishing visuals and extraordinary music that have always been the hallmark of the Star Wars saga.

Cartoon Network (CartoonNetwork.com), currently seen in more than 97 million U.S. homes and 166 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s ad-supported cable service now available in HD offering the best in original, acquired and classic animated entertainment for kids and families. Nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (ET, PT), Cartoon Network shares its channel space with Adult Swim, a late-night destination showcasing original and acquired animation for young adults 18-34.

    by beastie

and pasted them together for the movie. The series really is pretty good. I wasn't going to watch (based on the film) but I thought I'd sit down with my son to catch some episodes to make sure he can handle it.I gotta say, what makes the show so good is the clones and their different personalities. Also, the show seems to take itself a little more seriously than the prequels (at least in the clone centric episodes) and it really works. I, for one am excited by this news.

    Isnt this all bullshit?

    by jobacca

I thought that Lucasfilm had already produced at least 100 episodes of this show. It was sold as a "package"...meaning the network had to pick up all 100 episodes at one time. So yeah, they picked it up for a second season...because they had to. That being said, the shows not THAT bad. Sometimes. The Paul Dini episode was pretty good...

I've been following this series with my Son and it is actually pretty good. The most recent episode actually has a clone questioning the authority of the Jedi and referring to his Brothers as slaves. As the previous posted stated, this series takes itself a little more seriously than others.

    by biggusdickus

Yes, I know it's sacrilege and George Lucas shaped all our childhoods, but does anyone ever really need to see Star Wars again? We all saw it as kids at the cinema, then we all bought it on VHS, then we all went back to the cinema for the 'remastered' versions, then we all bought the DVDs, then we all went once more to the cinema for the 'prequels', then we all bought the 'original' DVDs. It's only a matter of time before the Blu-Rays are released and then - THEN - I gather that Mr. Lucas is planning a 3D version of Episode IV...Fucking hell man, haven't you made enough money off the back of this? You've wanked it dry, George, let it go...

    by samuellappdance

The only people dissing this show are the ones who haven't sat down and watching at least two or three episodes. It definitely has a good vibe. Why is it better than the prequels? Easy. Two things. One, it is actually set during WAR TIME (unlike Episode I and most of Episode II). And, two, there has been almost no scenes on Coruscant featuring Senators and politicos debating galaxy events. It's must closer in tone and style to Episodes III-VI. And the Clones are terrific.

    by wormie1

OK, The Clone Wars movie wasn't great, but the TV series is pretty decent. I usually prefer traditional cel animation, but they've done a good job on this show. Of course, TCW is not as awesome as the live-action films, but for what it is, it's a decent effort at continuing the franchise. Certainly, the writing and acting is far superior to most cartoon shows. I'm not keen on Ahsoka. She's not particularly annoying, but she seems a little out-of-place as a character seemingly put in solely to cater to a particular demographic. The idea of a live-action SW show scares me, as I dread the franchise going the way of Star Trek.

I thought that the first good thing to come out of lucas ltd in a long time was gonna get canceled. I like many hated the movie but show has been improving every week. If a shit movie was what we had to sit through to get a great series then it was worth it. I think credit needs to go to the makers of the series who I've heard are carry overs from my previous favorite animated show: Avatar The Last Airbender show. Lets hope in the second season we get some Windu episodes and more Kit Fisto please. Rex is my favorite character of the series by far and recommend "Rookies" to all newcomers.

    by rakafraker

I, myself was one of those that waited to see the movie until the series was about halfway through the first season. (I have been in line for every other Star Wars movie)
When I did watch the movie, I was pleasantly surprised. The story was good. The animation style was harder to get used to, but has grown tremendously on me.The only things that irk me are the VO acting. It's still a bit stiff. Hopefully the actors loosen up a bit as it goes along. And as another poster pointed out, Asohka seemed like she would be infuriatingly annoying, but has turned out to be pretty darned good. Even the episode with Jar Jar was in line. It's almost as if they really do want the viewer to hate Jar Jar. He is, after all, the one that allowed the Clone Wars to happen. I can't wait until comicon to hear news about the live-action series. If the cartoon is any indication of the quality of the upcoming series, we're in for a treat!

And I keep sitting down and watching it hoping it would get better. One poster claimed it's better than the movies because there is no politics. That's fine but the robots still act like Woody Allen and the dialogue makes my eyes roll almost every time. Also this little anouncement seems random since they already sold off more episodes I feel as if ratings are down so they release this to get people to say "Well if it's a hit maybe I should check it out".

The visual charcter design needs to be more realistic.

    by stereotypical evil archer

Gradualy add detail from episode to episode. The puppet hair is the worst aspect of the design. The spaceships are good, they should elaborate on the battles a little more; after all it's called "Star Wars"The environments need some visual "atmosphere;" I understand it saves on cost, but the backgrounds need that little extra detail. The stories are okay, a little deriviative of each other, but slowly braking new ground.I want the opening crawl. I hope the live action TV series will have the opening crawl; it's essential for the "feeling."Of course no matter how good the live series is it will probably pale against HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire.

What they really need to do next is...

    by the gipper

a CGI Han Solo series where they cover all the material including the original Brian Daley trilogy (Han Solo at Stars' End; Han Solo's Revenge; Han Solo and the Lost Legacy) and the A.C. Crispin trilogy (The Paradise Snare: The Hutt Gambit; and Rebel Dawn.)

They can finally get into areas such as Solo at the Imperial Naval Academy, his rescue of Chewie from slavery, etc. -- all those areas that Lucas has so far barred authors from exploring for some unknown reason.

I'm confused. I thought this Clone Wars series was just the Clone Wars movie chopped up into 30 minute sections. by royston lodge

This may be a terrible precedent for me to cite, but the Droids and Ewoks animated series didn't have opening crawls. I really really really liked the old Droids series. Heck, I'd love to see Mungo Baobab and/or Admiral Screed make more appearances in the Expanded Universe! Wouldn't it be fun to see Admiral Screed and Admiral Thrawn in CGI, and for the writers to make them rivals within the Imperial Navy? I'd buy that for a dollar! (Furthermore, I don't even hate the old Ewoks series!)

It was penned by Paul Dini, and it showed, big time.

    Don't miss the crawl

    by cybergangster

CW is supposed to be a serial, much like what Lucas grew up (and based his script) on. So the recap at the start of each episode fits. The show is also aimed at the younger demograph... I wouldn't expect 8 year olds to be excited by a lengthy crawl each week.

I dig the show too. As the series has progressed the episodes have become more enjoyable. My younger kids have also started to enjoy it too and are asking about all things Star Wars (they haven't seen the movies yet - that'll be a special day...).

    Eh

    by jdb1972

Aside from the flaming Hutt uncle in the movie, I didn't think it was any worse than the series. The series is for kids, and mine generally enjoy it. I can watch it with them, even if it's not up to, say, ESB or the original Clone Wars (Genndy Tartakovsky). Beats the heck out of the mind-numbingly awful Ben 10 Alien Force, at any rate.

    I really like this show

    by mattmanreturns

The quality on this is damn good for a TV cartoon. The action scenes are intense and I like the story arcs that span multiple episodes. Plus, this reminds me of the Robotech days when people died every episode.

far better than any of the prequels

    by blackshuck

..FAR better. It's a good show, my six year old has been sucked into the mythos hardcore. I was intrigued to see a recent episode address the Republic's morally reprehensible practice of using clones to fight a war.

Clone Wars = Awesome, Clone Wars Haters = Dead Wrong

    by atomheartbrother

Sorry kids, but the haters had it wrong. The Clone Wars tv show is awesome (a mini Star Wars in every bite), and the movie is perfectly watchable if not downright damned enjoyable if you watch it in 24 minute bits... like it was originally intended before Uncle George decided to cash in (the true sin of the theatrical release of The Clone Wars).

I've only seen the first 10 episodes, but surprisingly I'm enjoying the hell out of it. My favorite episodes are the ones with the clones as lead characters.

    Agree with the non-haters.

    by wingnut1a

The show is dumbed down a little for a younger audience, but over all it is quite good. There are some real Star Wars moments in this series.

The action scenes are usually really exciting. The most recent episode even had some clones doing MMA ground fighting moves on each other.

    Hello? The crawl is there...

    by lord john whorfin

in every fucking episode. It's read, this time, instead of text. And Batman: Brave And The Bold is the best non-comic book Batman ever. I prefer a Batman who goes into outer space and under the ocean to a Batman who wears eye makeup.

"and build on our dominance with boys"

    by slickyvonboner

That little snippet cracked me the hell up. Anyways, this show kicks ass. Just wish they'd introduce some new sith or jedi, because we know Ventress, Grevious, Dooku and Kenobi, Skywalker, Fisto, etc, live until episode 3. So there isn't much tension in their scenes. It will be interesting to see what happens to Ahsoka. though.

It Is Actually Pretty Good, I Like It

    by laserpants

Its like any tv show; some episodes are great, some not-so-great, but overall its a good show. Where it fails is when it focuses on characters whose fate we already know (a cliffhanger featuring Anakin isn't really much of a cliff hanger if we know he's going to survive), but when it focuses on background or new characters, its really fantastic. In addition, the animation is very good, and seemingly getting better. The recent episode on the ice planet (not Hoth, but similar) was really friggin' great.

    by ddschneider1972

a few folks on here. Some episodes are great, some OK. Overall it's fun and looks amazing (I wish I had CN in HD). It does fail in focusing too much on the main characters who we know the fate of already. I'd like to see some Jedi we saw in the earlier movies in the background, and follow their fates. I want a Yaddle episode!

    Why no post-ROTJ series...

    by bizarrojerry

In Lucas' mind, Return of the Jedi is the end of Star Wars. While this does not prevent him from allowing license holders to churn out decades worth of material set after the movie and get all the money for it, this is how he feels. And any filmed story -- be it live action or animated -- comes under his guidance (another decision of his), he will not do any movies or TV set after ROTJ.

    Dunno why Batman came up

    by bizarrojerry

But that last Brave and the Bold with the Green Lantern Corps was a great episode. Maybe even more firmly set in the DC comics universe than even some JLU episodes. Guy Gardner, G'Nort and Sinestro as a GL. Batman even seemed less cutesy as he has in some episodes. And yes, he decks Gardner to shut him up almost exactly like the famed JLA scene, complete with "One punch! One punch!" Even the couple of frames showing the punch mirrored the original comic panel.

    by rbatty024

this series is actually pretty good. I prefer this over the previous clone wars series, because there just isn't much you can do in five minutes.

Is it just me, or is that press release is a little too obsessed with boys ages 6-11?

    So Much Material to Mine

    by samuellappdance

That's the genius of George Lucas and this universe. There is room for other writers, directors, novelists, animators, etc. to run around in. Agreed, when the show's focus is off the main characters from the prequels, it's at its best. But you can still plug in Anakin and Obi Wan and Yoda into stories such as the ice planet episode and deliver compelling "Star Wars"-style adventure. But, wow, an OT-era show with Rebels Vs. Empire would just be amazing. It really should be done, especially while you can still get people like Hamill, Fisher, Billy Dee, Daniels, and the others to provide their voices.

    by rbatty024

is disappointing. Maybe the series will pick up but I haven't seen anything of interest so far. Writers need to realize that it's not enough to have Batman fight a villain for thirty minutes. They also have to come up with a plot, dialogue, and if they're really ambitious, a twist or two.

    by wingnut1a

Lucasfilm should set up 4 production teams, each responsible for making 1 hour of solid Star Wars content every 2 years. Then, every summer, you slap 2 of them together and we get a new Star Wars movie every year. There could be one stand alone hour and one continuing story. A serial, just like Lucas and Spielberg enjoyed so much as kids.

No, it's not like the original trilogy.

    by amy chasing

It's a childrens show, and I mean that in that it holds nothing for adults. If anything it's like the prequel trilogy simplified, and has more stupid dialogue from battle-droids. Honestly, if they're all being controlled from a central point, why do they all have to have individual personalities? Why can't they be what they were created to be - a wall of emotionless destruction? Oh wait, BECAUSE. IT'S. A. FUCKING. CHILDRENS. SHOW!

This is not Star Wars. This has as much to do with Star Wars as the prequels - pretty but just bad fanfic with bad acting. And what they did with Yoda in the first Clone Wars episode is what they did to Indiana Jones in Crystal Skull. A mentor to Clone Troopers? Give me a break.

    by greenstyle92

You know the video game "The Force Unleashed?" Even on the Wii, WAY better than the Clone Wars series. They shoulda made a series about THAT: The empire up and running, a last few jedi leading independent militias, and one man caught in the middle trying to get the rebellion up and running. Fuck A!

    by drath

Doesn't everyone miss the original trilogy asthetic and look? Doesn't everyone agree that the Millenium Falcon and Han Solo and Luke vs DARTH VADER and Rebellion vs Empire is the TRUE Star Wars? Doesn't everyone know that there's a significant amount of time suggested to have passed between A NEW HOPE and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK--enough that you could easily set a series as big as CLONE WARS in there? Well....GET THE FUCK ON WITH IT!!!!

And I agree: When will Lucas allow a series set during the OT?As for future episodes of Clone Wars, I'd love to see one that focuses on C3PO and R2D2 teamed up -- it could be an episode that's like a much better version of the Droids animated series and of course allude to the OT era.
