Ain't It Cool News (

A Day Long Dreamt of... The Release of FANBOYS... in Austin, Seattle, Houston, San Francisco, NY, LA, Philly & Chicago!

Hey folks, Harry here... I kinda can't believe the day has come. I remember when Ernie Cline first came over to my house to hand me the script to FANBOYS - we weren't really friends at the time. He was a customer, he'd bought 2 BARBARELLA 1-sheets for his wife from me at City Wide Garage Sale, where I was still selling collectibles to pay the bills. It was the extremely early days of the site. Before there were ads. When the site was only ever on a single page. Articles were short and more often than not - it was just a link, two or three sentences written by me and a goofy Photoshopped image making fun of the project in question in a loving manner. Ernie was going to shoot the film on video with a group of locals. It was his, "I'm going to shoot my CLERKS" desperate grab for film... and frankly... to just get off his ass and actually make something from his imagination that he could show friends & god willing an audience. That was the year the Alamo Drafthouse opened here in Austin. I didn't really know Tim League back then. I hadn't met most of my friends, and my future wife was 12. To say it was a long time ago... doesn't really cover it. Today in the following markets on 44 Screens... FANBOYS opens theatrically. The odds are against the film. That's not many screens, it doesn't have a big national push. Seth Rogen isn't doing the TODAY SHOW to sell it, he won't be on CONAN or LENO or LETTERMEN or THE VIEW or any of the other shows. This is a quiet roll-out. We could bitch that it isn't on enough screens... or we could remember that almost 32 years ago, the original STAR WARS opened on May 25th, 1977 on only 32 screens. For this film to play in most of your cities, a miracle of turn out would have to occur. I'm not expecting that to happen. Nobody is expecting that to happen. But it could happen. It sold out every show that the ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE RITZ booked this Friday... So they began adding showing on their second screen there. They're expected to go quickly. Ernie Cline, the screenwriter will be on hand to introduce every screening. This is a work of extreme passion and perseverance on his part. I just got in from Berlin tonight, and will call him tomorrow to see if he'd like company. But the point of this article is to say this. This is a film that has been at war for so long. So many fans have wanted to see it, written emails on its behalf and tracked its progress over the last 10 years on this site and many others. I've seen multiple versions of this movie, my scene and ultimately I really like the final film. It is fun. At times it is more, at others you can feel unnatural hands touching its Underoos. But in the end... it exists, it made it, and your support - all of our support did that. I will always wish that Ernie's original draft had been shot. It's the film I love most. It is that script's sequences that work best, and it is for that reason that Ernie and Kyle Newman the director are doing their best to let as many of you know as possible. All they ever wanted to do was to make a film that reminds us of what we dreamt of a long time ago. That wanted to hold up a mirror to the friendships and the loyalty and love that those of us that embraced that original universe felt. I'm just so happy that this day has come. Enjoy it if you can. Call your Star Wars buddies, wear your shirt, jacket, hoodie, armor, whatever you got. You're a Star Wars Fanboy or Fangirl. These guys made a movie for ya. It hits these theaters today... (this list isn't complete - check your area, but this is what I found:)

i think "fanboys" (haven't seen the film, but i'm speculating) would have sort of an ironic value to it in this post prequel age. I mean, when this thing was written, that was at the height of the hype of the Phantom Menace right? Nobody thought, hey Star Wars can actually suck, it was impossible to think. It just feels weird, going back to when we thought this was going to blow our minds only to be disappointed. That being said, I still hope the movie is funny.

  • Feb. 6, 2009, 2:59 a.m. CST

I'm seeing it here in Seattle!

    by BadMrWonka

at Pacific Place (for the record, Big Guy, those other crapfest theaters are outside Seattle, and I doubt there's gonna be a high turnout in fucking Tukwila)<p>but I've got like 10 friends together to see it, so I'm doing my part.<p>go see this movie, people!!

  • Feb. 6, 2009, 3:36 a.m. CST

    Why was the film burried?

    by heavenlykid

Seems like everyone that's seen it flips over it. It's an easy to sell premise, I.E. Everyone loves star wars and everyone loves making fun of Episode 1.Yet releasing it has been a bigger struggle than Trick R Treat (Well, okay, not quiet as big as Fanboys is now coming out and Trick R Treat is still waiting for Obama to close the prison it's stuck in). So...what's the beef? Was it a really off test screening?

  • Feb. 6, 2009, 3:37 a.m. CST

Harry, every filmmaker appriciates your pitch here but...

    by Kirbymanly

The truth be told... it's not a very good film. The jokes are beyond the threshold of old (both dated and seen before) and the direction/camera-work feels like a guy who kinda-had-a-budget but not the passion or know-how to use it. In short, it would've been more interesting if he had shot it on video and then used it to gain work. In short, it's more than obivous that it is a fine labour of love-- the guy obivously LOVES Star Wars-- but it falls short of providing time-spanning laughs or providing identification with a standard Star Wars fan.

  • Feb. 6, 2009, 3:39 a.m. CST

    by heavenlykid

Nothing personal, but any paragraph that contains 'in short' twice probably isn't very short.

  • Feb. 6, 2009, 3:47 a.m. CST

Oddly enough - FANBOYS originally wasn't MEANT to be a laugh a minute. It had a few laughs, but was meant to be more about these four friends rallying around one of their own. When the Weinsteins saw the Apatow films, they decided they needed to do that sort of thing. The final film is a combination of all the versions. Better than the worst... and actually the best of all the versions. The version that was never shot was Ernie's 1st draft which was and always will be the version I loved. It was sincere, humorous and felt real. Hollywood moved it further and further away from that. At this point I'm supporting the eventual product with the caveat that the film does have its problems, but it's still a lot of fun and has it's bouts of heart and sincerity... But it succeeds much better than many of the Harvey Scissorhands flicks

    by Kirbymanly

I never said it should've been a laugh a minute. In fact, one of the elements that I loved, and wished was explored more, was the potential for real tragedy in the sense that the person with cancer felt unfulfilled in the end. The elements are all there in geek-reality but it never happens. It had the potenital to be one of the best dark comedies in years. Is my version better? For me... yeah. For others? Time will tell. All I can say is... the film is extremely dated in its humor-- bordering on "_____" Movie levels. (This part is for HeavenlyKid) All I can say is...nerd humor and feelings have been handled MUCH better and to greater degrees than this film. But, like I said, the heart is there and I wish the filmmaker the best in getting what he wants his voice to be as on either film/video.

Oh God. By all means, let's PERPETUATE the unsavory myths about "fanbois". Why don't you all just organize a day where all the get-a-lifers out there dance naked in the streets for a while, singing the theme music from the original "Star Trek".<br><br>I'd guess that would be far less an embarassment than this sad excuse for a movie. That is all.

  • Feb. 6, 2009, 5:38 a.m. CST

    It's playing on Long Island...

    by damagedinc

I have to wait tip Sunday or during the week, but I've got 10+ bucks to throw down in support. Where were you in '99? When the hope of a decent new Star Wars movie was the most important thing in the world? I remember reading in '95-'96 that Obi Wan was going to be played by Kenneth Branagh and there was no mention of a 3 movies about l'il whiny Anakin Jr.For a couple years I was expecting a full blown 3 film space opera with an adult Anakin fighting in an unrelenting Clone Wars that was as gritty as Empire. That's the trilogy I'll always hope for instead of Jake Lloyd shouting "yipppee" in a glorified children's show. Even if it doesn't up being that great, I look forward to reliving that stupidly sad end to my senior year of high school. Episode 1 will always be the benchmark of the cinematic missfire.

    A table without legs

is just a slab of matter sitting on the dinning room floor. What's that mean, fuck if I know. This film is a table is without legs and My Family, Friends, and I ain't going to sit there on the fucking floor eating the shit being served on this incomplete legless table. Why even call it a table anyways. It's just one layer above the floor....

Sadly- it's much ado about squat

    by Rubiks Doob

After all these years this is a token release of let's face it- a shitty, limp unfunny comedy about nerds trying to break into Lucasfilm to watch, wait for it... The Phantom Menace. This is an old, stale joke of a movie about the saddest crap in the face of 'fanboys' ever. Unless this movie ends with George Lucas in front of a firing squad it arrives with all the relevancy of an inert, decade late fart. Good college try though Harry, Harvey will be pleased...

The problem is that people hate Star Wars now. This could have done well in 2001. Maybe even 2004. But George Lucas has screwed over the fan base one too many times, and this Indiana Jones thing from last year certainly didn't help. I don't actually know one person who has seen Clone Wars. Not one. I'll Netflix this, however. Looks like fun.

    by Dasinfogod

I'm happy that FANBOYS is finally getting a release (one theater listed is near me, so I'll make a point of seeing it), but there is a related flick that has interested me far more and has almost just as long a production history...<p>Whatever became of Patrick Read Johnson's "'77" (a.k.a. "5.25.77")? Pat was really nice and sent me the script ages ago and it's a hoot. It really speaks to my generation of geek, but not sure who the audience for it would be now (the PS3 generation won't care and the Atari2600 generation has moved on with lives and families) - maybe that's what has dogged the project deep down...<p>PRJ are you out there on the thread??? What's the scoop?

What's wrong with actually expecting people who pass themselves off as journalists to, oh, I don't know, be journalistic? There's nothing credible about a site that couldn't care enough to hire someone who actually knows how to write, so that they can make sure the articles aren't as poorly written and punctuated as this one is. AICN's stories are always so littered with grammatical and punctuational errors, and Harry's articles, in particular, are a mess. It's a matter of pride--if this site had any, they'd take the time to clean things up.

Harry, I'd be interested to know your thoughts..

on whether the South Park writers should have had a pop at adding the jokes to the final script? I can't think of anyone better at 'nerd humour' than them, actually.

    '77 UPDATE

    by ShiftyEyedDog2

It head a test screening at a film festival in October, and a post from PRJ on the imdb board on December 8 said this: <br><br>"We're doing one last editorial pass based on notes we made at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Like to shake 5 minutes out of the running time. Then it's 14 weeks of VFX, scoring, and digital intermediate creation and we're finally really done. Thanks for asking!"<br><br>So it looks like it should be finished by spring, so hopefully a release in the second half of this year.

Really looking forward to the PRJ flick. I stood in line for 3 hours that first week of release at San Francisco's late-lamented Coronet Theater towards the end of May (as best as I can recall, it was the 30th or the 31st) back in '77, and it blew my wee 13 year year old mind away.<p>Oh, and for you North Bay Area Folks, I see from this article that FANBOYS will be at the Northgate Theater - a bit of a dump multiplex - but locals may remember that the original Northgate Theater (the nifty old one with the gigantor curved Cinemascope screen) was home to the first Marin County run of Star Wars back in '77.<p>Man, I'm feelin' old.

The photo accompanying Ebert's review - of the leads in a theater, apparently watching Ep I - does not include the character Linus. Spoiler, I think!

I kind of doubt this film got any better over the course of its long development hell. How many films get held up and tinkered with for this long and emerge as something worth watching?

    Some films should stay lost.

of the late '70s early '80s, but then I read Zelazny's stuff as a teen, and then realized how inadequate Star Wars is. Never got why it's considered the end all be all of geekdom, when there are far superior stories.

    by standundermyumbrella

I've written about this one a few times over at Ain't It Cool, and I really don't have much else to add at this point. My review was based on sitting through three fairly different cuts of the film in quick succession one week. And after each cut, I thought the same thing: it just doesn't work. I respect the hard work and the passion that it took to wrestle it onscreen a full decade after they started trying, and I like both Ernie Kline (the screenwriter) and Kyle Newman (the director). They both seem like smart, funny guys who had the best of plans for what this movie could be. I just don't think it's on the screen in the end, and I can't really recommend this one, even for the hardest of hardcore "Star Wars" nerds.

What a fucking joke! While this site may need an editor it sure as hell isn't going to be you! - "I personally will insure that at least a tiny portion of your articles will not be riddled with mistakes" - the word is ENSURE you smug prick! AICN is a fucking geek news site, not a bloody medical journal. It's written by geeks for geeks and if the grammar and punctuation aren't always perfect who gives a rats ass? Are you paying for it? No! So shut the fuck up you absolute tit!

    by jimmay

It was Clone Wars that absolutely ruined being a Star Wars fanboy. I've stuck with it through thick and thin, but after seeing that cheaply animated monstrosity, I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the future of Star Wars. From now on it's just the original trilogy and Episode III for me, the rest is dead to me.

I wanted to enjoy this movie but didn't

    by Average J.

Saw this today. I really wanted to have a fun time. But I really didn't. I considered asking for my money back about half way through, but I knew I was at the point of no return. This was a terrible film. I've enjoyed this kind of geek film in the past (example "Free Enterprise, etc.), but even the cancer angle was so insincerely done. Actually, if Weinstein removed it, I don't think I would have missed it. It was only a shallow excuse to drive the plot. No emotion at all. I really felt that I was watching a bunch of amateurs making a movie. And let's finally face it, Star Wars is over with. I love the original trilogy, but that's done and gone. I mean, these kids weren't even born when the the first one came out. This would have probably been a much better film if it were a bunch of thirty somethings. But as I get older, I just find that this kind of devotion for a movie is just a bit sad. Especially for a film like Star Wars where this kind of thing has been done to death. Really, it's just time to stop it now. Bottom line, other than the fact that the Veronica Mars chick is super hot, this film should not have been released theatrically. It's a DVD rental at best. Trust me folks, if this didn't come out in your city, then you're lucky. You saved yourself 10 bucks. Seriously, it's a bad film. I'm officially Star Wars over!
