Legolas bears his CROSS... Bloom set to star alongside Bond girl in sci-fi escape flick!

Published at:  Feb 05, 2009 12:09:00 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a bit of news about an interesting-sounding sci-fi flick that's casting up called THE CROSS.

Orlando Bloom will star alongside BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF's Vincent Cassel and QUANTUM OF SOLACE Bond hottie Olga Kurylenko for director Andrew Niccol (GATTACA). Bloom will play a man bound and determined to cross over some kind of border into parts unknown, an area where no one is believed to have traveled. Cassel is a man trying to stop him from crossing over.

I need to hear a little more, but I like the initial synopsis found in Variety's article. Niccol's work on GATTACA is solid, his work on S1M0NE maybe not so much, but I'll definitely give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm particularly eager to see Cassel hunting down Orland Bloom...

    by jackrabbitslim

The man is boxoffice leprosy. His acting skills are atrocious. My woman assures me - he's "scandalously hot" but still ... Put it simply - if Niccol actually cast him - SHAME ON YOU - and yeah Gattaca was (and remains) transcendent while Simone *shudder* is best purged from the cerebral cortex.

Truman Show, Gattaca and Lord of War are all varying degrees of awesome. Yeah sure, Simone was a misfire.Bloom on the other hand has been godawful in everything except LOTR.Rest of the cast sounds good. Cassel is a great and Olga is well... hot.

    by straighttohell

and Simone is actually pretty funny. Al still gave a shit when he made that one and there are quite a few scenes in the film where he's having a blast (and not just collecting a paycheck like in Righteous Kill.) However, I didn't really care for Nicholl's Lord of War. The story is about 15 years too late. Not a bad movie per se. Cage was compelling and Ethan Hawke was great, but it just didn't all come together somehow. However, this looks interesting. I like Bloom. And Cassel is awesome. His work in Irreversible was astonishing (like his meltdown after he saw his brutalized wife), and he always brings real charisma to his roles. Haven't seen the last Bond movie, so can't say if Kurienko is any good, but she's certainly a treat for the eyes.

    by spandau belly

I mean, are we really supposed to believe that in the future people will get discriminated against on a genetic level for most jobs? Right now it's almost impossible to find employees with the right education and who are willing to show up semi-sober everyday and do some work. You throw up another barrier and you'll never hire anybody.
"Well, you've got an MBA and all the right experience and you seem like a great guy.... but you're genetic test shows that you may be predisposed to ulcers and back hair, so we're gonna have to pass and sit here waiting for an ideal candidate until the end of time. Good luck."
If I want a story about the human spirit triumphing over genetic superiority, I'll watch ROCKY 4 thanks.

Is this a version of Niccol's River Road script I read like years ago? It sounds like the same plot. Moritarty reviewed the script. And I think at one point, Mel Gibson was interested. It was an okay script. Certainly better then Simone or Lord of War. Niccol has yet to live up to the promise of Gattaca, an instant classic that is one of the finest sci-fi films and debuts of the last 20 years. But then, he did manage to land that super hot wife. Sooooo...I'll give him credit on that.

Actually, I agree with others who are wondering about Orlando Bloom. The guy seems friendly, and he did a nice job playing Legolas in "Lord of the Rings," but I don't think he's a leading man. He works best complementing the presence of greater actors. "Pirates of the Caribbean" is another example of this dynamic. Johnny Depp carried the films, Bloom hung on for the ride.
I hope Andrew Niccol realizes this.

    by mullah omar

I had the same reaction to Jude Law in GATTACA as you did - first time I ever saw him act, he upstaged pretty much everybody in an already memorable film, and I left the theater wondering why I never saw this guy in anything before. I'm less impressed by much of his subsequent output, but damn, that was an unforgettably good breakout role.

I had the same reaction to Vincent Cassel in LA HAINE, but at the time I hadn't seen many modern French films, so it wasn't as astonishing to have not seen him in anything else.

I could almost sya the same hting about Olga - HITMAN wasn't very good, but I thought she took a stock role that would be forgettable in the hands of 1000 other actresses and made it quirky enough to really stand out.

So like I said, this cast looks great . . . except for Bloom.

    The reason...

    by mr.ftw

The reason Orlando Bloom continues to get work is because he is awesome and a far better actor than anyone bitching in this talk back I'd be willing to bet. He is the Earl Flynn of this generation, a modern day swashbuckler. It's a travesty that he wasn't in Stardust and isn't the lead in Prince of Persia. If there is any justice in the world this new movie will involve him using a sword.

    The Bloom effect...

    by merriman lyon

Orlando Bloom just is the latest of the bland, blank, boring actors that Hollywood flirts with until it becomes clear that no-one wants to see them in a starring role. Chris O'Donnell was another. Also, Ben Affleck. Before them there was the likes of Cary Elwes. These actors make you yawn as soon as they come on screen. But Bloom beats the lot of them hands-down. He has taken blandness to a level that is actually disturbing: his sheer blankness almost makes him invisible: a Bloom-shaped emptiness in the frame that sucks the life out of the movie.More bizarre still, are the people who seem to think he's a worthwhile actor. On what basis? What is it exactly, that entertains you about this actor?Seriously, what is his personality? Blank. What is his acting style? Blank. What types of characters can he play? Blank. What' his voice like? Blank. How does he express emotion? Blank. How does he respond to dramatic situations? Blank. And don't for the love of God, try to explain him away by citing the box-office performance of Pirates Of The Caribbean or LOTR. He was NOT starring in those movies OR carrying them in any way. That job was done by REAL actors such as Depp, Rush, Mortenson, McKellen etc, PLUS a bilion dollars-worth of spectacular CGI. Bloom was kept WELL in the background, like the bland wallpaper he is.His casting in POTC was PURPOSELY as the bland opposite to Depp's fun, over-the-top pirate. Bloom's role was MEANT to be boring - and in that sense, they chose the right actor. However, I would still say that even then, he was just TOO boring for the role. As for LOTR - he didn't have much to do - but do NOT tell me that he was at any time in danger of convincing you that he was an elf. He was from first to last an average London bloke in a fancy-dress costume, delivering his lines with precision-adjusted blandness.Sadly, there have been some serious casualties of Bloom's spirit-sucking performances. Case in point: Kingdom of Heaven, which would have been brilliant except that the "lead" actor was being out-acted by everyone else - including the camels, the props and the scenery.

    Why Orlando's in movies...

    by hooded justice

Has it occurred to anyone that Orlando Bloom may not be a real person? I suspect he is the result of a Hollywood experiment to create the first all-CGI movie star. No mo-cap or performance capture - his performances are entirely the creation of a computer. Thus his expressionless, robot-like behaviour. It's the only explanation that makes sense.

Bloom "is the Earl Flynn of this generation"

    by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for

Who was the Earl Flynn of the last generation, pray tell?Pirates was successful because of Johnny Depps ridiculous performance that somehow came off. Don't get me wrong, it was a fucking great, ballsy performance, but it was completely ridiculous. It's the only reason Black Pearl worked as well as it did (Rush was also good). The sequels weren't as good because we knew what to expect from Depp. All the while, Bloom's in the corner prancing about trying to woo the stick insect. A fucking boring character played by a fucking boring actor. His performance detracted from the films. They were incredibly successful in spite of his performance. He is worse than Hartnett, Kutcher and Paul Walker combined. He's a dead weight in every film I've seen him in, except the LOTR (and even that was pushing it in the ROTK).Apparently he's gone and worked on the stage (as has Hartnett). Hopefully he will develop enough as an actor to be able to warrant his lead status in this film. Niccol makes mostly great films, and his failure (Simone) was at least interesting, with a great Pacino perfomance, which is becoming rarer and rarer.
