A pretty darn cool future movie called GEMINI MAN. And wow... this is AICN's 4000th story!!!

Published at:  Jul 20, 1999 4:24:16 AM CDT

Wow. The 4000th story to run on Ain't It Cool News... But, ya know that's not really true. Ya see about a year and a half to two years ago when I moved to the aint-it-cool-news.com address... well my previous site host decided to just ERASE my first year and a half worth of work. Now I burn to CD-ROMS every story... but back then... I was dumb and naive. Well... Gosh... 4000 stories since coming to aint-it-cool-news.com! Cool. I look forward to breaking the 100,000 barrier then the 500,000 barrier and eventually the 1,000,000 story barrier! It's been a pleasure writing and editing and talking cool films with all of you! But now... To the story of a movie called THE GEMINI MAN...

This script could suck as far as I know, but I do know enough to want to read the dang thing. This is a project called GEMINI MAN, that is hanging around the wonderful world of Disney at the moment.

It concerns a middle-aged assassin that works for some sort of governmental Black Ops organization. Turns out he's been offing people for years, and in that time... You're bound to 'learn' too much or at least get in a helluvalot of trouble somehow. Well, it turns out that about 20 years prior when he first signed up for the... Company, some scientist, a Dr Sidney Sampson, cloned him. And now... 25 years later, Alex (our assassin) is being hunted down to be murdered by his 25 year old clone. Now the fun part of this is that the part of the assassin and his younger doppleganger will be played by the same actor.

This is pretty darn cool. Personally I've always hated the 'instantly' aged clones. It don't work that way. When they did them sheep... it wasn't until it reached the age of maturity that they were... identical.

It looks like it has Don Murphy attached to produce and... well, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Sure he had a dud with DOUBLE DRAGON, but he did produce NATURAL BORN KILLERS and APT PUPIL. And I know his tastes definately lean towards the cool what with projects like: ASTROBOY, HELL HOUSE, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY MEN, THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES, TRIPOD TRILOGIES and THE RECKONING; all being on his slate of productions to be produced. Personally I'd love to see someone like Russell Crowe in this film... but that's just a completely... um... needlessly kneejerk reaction to the concept. If you've heard anything more... let me know..

Wish I'd thought of this pitch!

How's about Connery now, and a CGI Connery taken from previous James Bond films? I'm sure there's enough footage of a young Connery for it to work

Tripod Trilogies? Harry, could you give me more info?

    by brimley

When I was younger I was enthralled with a series of books about a futuristic Earth society which was dominated by these HUGE tripod machines. The books storyline dealt with three friends banding together with a resistance group to free mankind from the Masters, the aliens who controlled the tripods. I know it sounds a little corny, but I had a lot of fun reading them. Is this what he was referring to Harry?

    Tripods (how'd we get here?)

    by kaji

Just for the record, the books you guys are talking about were written by John Christopher and 2/3 filmed in the UK as a TV series. It was way cool too.

    Those pesky Tripods

    by pete23

The Tripod books were a trilogy written by John Christopher. Starting with "The White Mountains", they told of a future where man had been driven back to the middle ages by invading aliens, who used giant robot tripods to control the planet (think War of the Worlds fighting machines). They were aimed at young adults, but are still a pretty good read for us old 'uns. The BBC made a series out of the first book in the eighties, but never got on to the other two which was a shame as they were much more spectacular (and would probably have looked like a bad Dr Who episode if the BBC had done them). A film would be double plus good (he did write a prequel, "The day the Tripods came", which showed how they took over the world via kids tv. Beware!!!).

    WHITE MOUNTAIN ROCK

    by nuschool

Growing up in Vermont and reading those books was the dopest!!! I'd look out the window and imagine what I'd do if I saw those bastards coming over the hill. I didn't know any caves to hide in, but I had my mountain all picked out. Then the books got weird by having the main kid become a slave in that alien city...I wanted the kids to stay in New Hampsire and fuck shit up RED DAWN STYLE!!! Anyway...Hitmen are more played than a cheerleader with self-esteam problems. Get a new myth, ya damn sack monkeys.

    by the gline

Sorry, guys, but -- Jesus, this sounds awful. We have 1) a covert-op who is 2) target for assassination by 3) his evil clone Skippy. Three durable cliches in a row. Good going. If this keeps up, in ten years the movie companies can just manufacture packs of cards with pre-printed plot pieces on them ("Alien artifact", "Cocaine stash", "Annoying girlfriend") and shuffle and deal them to build a story that isn't appreciably different from the junk being pounded out today. Sheesh!

    Disney movie about Assassins?

    by el duderino

Are you sure you don't mean that it's done by Touchstone? If there was a Disney movie about assassins, wouldn't the assassinating have to involve "being kicked in the groin to death" in order to even be made? Oh yeah, congrats on the 4000 story. If I ever lived to write 500,000 stories, I'd probably kill myself, but I'm not the writing type.

Tripod Movie: My Dream Come True! HARRY TELL MORE!

    by joh yowza

In 6th grade I read the first of the novels...I was instantly sucked into them. Anyhow, I can't wait now, please let these movies be taken seriously with a good director and a strong bunch of kids to play the three protagonist. Most importantly, make the tripods cool, but they were simple, much like they looked like on the original cover...very sleek with only three slick legs and a dome on the top. Please Hollywood don't let me down.

    Ungy, don't worry about it...

    by the gline

You're always going to get the feeling, no matter what you write, that someone somewhere has got the jump on you. Don't worry about it -- just write what's interesting. I'm an aspiring (ha ha) screenwriter myself; I know the feeling.

    Hey Harry!

    by deckard2019

I think clarifying that Tripods trilogy might be a good idea. Is it based on the Christofer books we're all hoping it is? Judging from this talk back, there's more enthusiasm over the possibility of seeing those books put to film then there is in the topic of your post. Clear this up for us, man.

    Russel Crowe!

    by broadie77

Having Russel Crowe play this part, may not be that far out of whack. I'm sure once Gladiator is out, Crowe will have officillay turned to gold, & everyone will want him to give that golden touch to their projects, & Disney may change change thier choice of Ford.

    Tripods trilogy would rule!

    by knex246

Wow!!!! I remeber watching the tv series as a kid and absoulotely loving it. It would be brilliant if this could become a movie. But seeing that I have not seen or heard anything about this idea of a tripods trilogy in the years since this article was posted I guess it is just a dream. Maybe one day this could become reality. If they can do LOTR then they can do this trilogy.

A post from the future for this future movie

    by seppukudkurosawa

That'll never get made. I'm sensing a common theme here at AICN. It's weird, when they post the news and you read it at the time you take it for granted that's it's gonna be made, but a lot of these things never pan out.
