20 BILLION (no not Glen's IQ)

Published at:  Dec 23, 1997 12:00:00 AM CST

Remember the project called 20 BILLION? Well here I have SUNSET SAM (long term
spy, new name) that came a strollin' down the avenue to clear it up. He had the coolest
shades and the tightest pecs you ever did see. Anyway the project sounds like it could be
some interesting material.

Just wanted to drop you a note RE: 20 BILLION, as mentioned in a recent
page. Your source is quite confused, so let's clear some things up.

20 BILLION is a thinly veiled satire of BILL GATES and Microsoft--hence
the name, $20 billion, which references how much money the man has.

The plot goes like this--a computer company manufactures an operating
system, and keeps putting bugs in it on purpose, so that they can sell
upgrades. But the practice backfires on them when a computer
controlling a drill in a mine shaft melts down, and causes the drill to
make the cave collapse, and dozens are killed. Gates and company
scramble in the face of this impending PR disaster, and tries to figure
out how to save their public image. Towards the end, Gates and other
rich and powerful people recieve word that a comet or something is going
to destroy the world--they are rich and powerful enough to build space
ships that will carry the elite off-world and save their lives. I won't
give away the twist ending...

This project should not be confused with the Microsoft expose/ satire
MICROSERFS--20 Billion is written by THE PLAYER screenwriter Michael
Tolkin (sic?) and is a comedy in that vein--what THE PLAYER did to
Hollywood, this script does to MICROSOFT. Very funny stuff.

Whatever associations your source is making with Cameron and $20 Billion
sound inaccurate to me. But I could be wrong...
