The Two Flynns Of TR2N...

Published at:  Feb 04, 2009 10:16:15 AM CST

Merrick here...

If you've seen the TR2N teaser/demo real (either at Comic Con, or via its subsequent leak across the Internet), you got a quick glimpse of Jeff Bridges reprising his Flynn character from the first film. And, you would've noted that two incarnations of Bridges were featured in that sequence: Bridges at his current age, AND Bridges appeared in the 1982 film.

Here's a look at what I'm talking about:

IO9 has a quick article about os this is being accomplished:

A source reveals to io9 that Jeff Bridges has been sent up to Canada to be digitized. A plaster cast has been created of Bridges.

Our tipster tells us that:

They will then take that 3D model and make him younger and then slap it on a body double in post.
As this is only one cog in the machine, I can't give a whole lot of detail. Canada scans actors and props to be used for various projects. These are very high resolution scans that pick up every wrinkle, face lift and scar on the actors body.

...says the piece, whose entirety can be found HERE.

Sounds cool - and glad they figured something out

    by vawitch

If the quality remains the same as the "teaser", then it sounds like they reached a happy in-between for reality/aging & a computer/ageless-world. Any word if Boxleitner is reprising Tron at all? Seems kinda silly if there's not at least a torch-passing (i.e., Alan has left/died, thus so has Tron).

Rupee88: You Are Right, But It Held Possibility...

    by media messiah

...for a great movie, or movies. The original Tron was missing certain important beats in its execution...ala a reason for the hero and the villain to hate each other, and at a really powerful emotional level...and strong love between the hero, and a female interest...instead, that was shown in a secondary relationship. The film also was missing humor. There were a few attempts at slap stick, but there wasn't anything the audience could really laugh at, or with???Audience participation in the film going experience is essential, without it, you lose your audience in terms of their emotional investment, they walk-out of a film not caring about the proceedings, if they are made to feel like observers, and not direct...participants. You have to shake an audience, make them laugh, cry, thrill them, invest them romantically, sexually, and make them want to cheer for the hero, and look forward to seeing the villain do his evil deeds...and that is what Tron was missing. The film was missing joy...and a pulse...and save for the light cycles, the film moved incredibly slow...in terms of action. So perhaps this time around, that will change, and we will see a difference...perhaps the filmmakers will add those missing beats to make this film more accessible to audiences, and to better help them emotionally connect to the characters and the overall story, and its arcs by giving them a reason to care?? Anyway, let's hope so. To make people give a damn, there have to be consequences in the computer world, for our real life reality, to inform the audience that this isn't just a fight in a video game or the virtual world, it's your fight too.

    Blade Runner Is Over Rated

    by media messiah

It's a boring, and slow movie...with very little story. I've heard that there was a secret about Harrison Ford's character that was not explored in the original, a twist that was to be exposed at the end of the film but was cut out of the film, the fact that he turns out to be a bio android. It would be nice to see a fast moving action packed sequel, where he is outed and must go on the run with his lover, also a bio android...as human hunters, including Edward James Olmost, pursue them. Don't get me wrong, the look of Blade Runner was great...but the story was banal and didn't justify a movie. A sequel, as I outlined it, would justify a movie...as it would inform us about a bio android and their wanting to live and feeling descriminated against, from the inside of their perspective, and not as the villains this time, but as the misunderstood heroes, and that would be intriguing to see the story turned 180 degrees. This film should be the difference between Alien, and Aliens, in terms of action...Blade Runner 2 being the latter.

    Tron 1 in context

    by crisp_one

I think that most of the Tron haters aren't seeing the movie in its context. It was 1982, everyone knew about computers, but since very few people had one in their homes, they were pretty mysterious to most people. The idea of "thinking machines" was pretty mind blowing to lots of people, scary to others (hence movies like Terminator and War Games). At that time, no movie had addressed the mystique of computer technology, so the idea that maybe programs were like little people running around in a digital world was pretty cool. Also, in 1982 nothing like this had ever been done with CGI, and it had a really different look to it.

When I saw Tron, I was 11, and it blew my mind. I wanted to go live in that world, or at least have a cool, glow-y game warrior costume.

Oh and Blade Runner is an absolute. It is objectively, intrinsically awesome. Your believing it to be not awesome does not alter its awesomeness. So there.

LOL.. people who shit on Blade Runner:

    by largojr

The movie wasn't about action and wasn't written for short attention spans. It tried to suggest that a being could move beyond the sum of their experience and transcend the nature of their birth. But I suspect you didn't pay enough attention to catch it. I'd suggest you read a book occasionally, but you're obviously MUCH too busy masturbating to the latest Brittney Spears vid. As for the original Tron... the story tried to indicate that, in an emotionless landscape of logic and response, that the programs were each evolving and taking on aspects of their creators. Hence the attraction between Boxleitner's 'Tron' & Cindy Morgan's 'Yori'. Non-emotional beings coming to terms with inexplicable changes to the basic nature of their existence. Now you can go back to your 'Fast & Furious' collection and masturbate to your hearts content.

because it was Harrison Ford's follow up to Empire and Raiders, and Blade Runner was not the rollicking action flick audiences came to expect. Stoopid monkeys.

    by yodaismyhomie

I would guess that was a part of the reason. But honestly there were many:
    1. The lack of action for those who were expecting Ford to be typecast
    2. The requirement of people to have to think a little
    3. The not so good theatrical cut...I mean I think EVERYONE prefers one of the alternative cuts to the theatrical cut...or am I alone here?
    4. It's just not a summer popcorn film...face it...there are few non-popcorn films that do really well in the box office, but they often develop a HUGE following on video/tv

It will jsut look like any other special fx movie !! the story was never anything special..it was always the look of the film rather than the story that was special..i dunno why the geeks at comic con were cheering this..the mind boggles!

    Why Blade Runner bombed...

    by scottindc

Skimm...you are correct; but there is a really a very obvious reason it bombed: it was R rated. Harrison Ford (and sci fi in general) were not very accessible commodities in terms of available marketshare (those with an R rating). So, Ford was put into a good but R rated film which played against type and market; he was a "PG" commodity...an 'everyman' that was reasonably 'family friendly' (as far as action and sci fi performances); so ultimately the rating stifled the available audience.

    1982

    by ufoclub1977

1982...Blade Runner was a stylish but empty, obscure, and PRETENTIOUS movie for most people, and Tron just didn't have any emotional flow, accessible action, or coherence (for the masses)... But both were cool visually. Blade Runner really picked up its legendary status in the late 80's as far as I can tell. But I know a lot of people thought it was cheesy with its smokey glamor and poetic cryptic elements, cheesy like a techni nightclub or a goth person. That was a GREAT genre summer, Star Trek II, ET, Poltergeist, Blade Runner, The Thing, Tron... what am I missing? I personally like both Blade Runner and Tron, but I remember my numb first viewings, and understand why they did not do that well. People weren't going to get excited by high concept scifi that was almost abstract in its presentation of the storyline.

"Alien" kind of shows that a rated "R" scifi movie could hit big if people could connect with the concept and story.

    Blade Runner Was Not Intelligent...

    by media messiah

...it just wasn't stupid, that's all. The film had no real perspective. It was overlong and boring...and went no where. As far as the story goes, it could have been any trivial cop drama, anywhere...but in this case, it was just placed in the future, end of story. Any super intellectual subtext that others have added in their own minds to justify that vacuous movie, is just that. It was nice looking, and well acted...but empty.

Everyone go rent Tron, somewhere, and see it for what it truly is: an average sci/fi at best. Bladerunner, however, truly is a masterpiece, and one of the best sci/fi movies ever made. I hope that Tron II, or TR2N (how stupid) does something completely different than the original. If it gets some good reviews, I will see it. Jeff Bridges is a nice guy, but we are done professionally.

Blade Runner failed at the box office, but...

    by skinjob69

This IMO was due to it's film noir sensibilities, which most audiences were not expecting from a Harrison Ford sci-fi movie. It's slow, methodical pacing (a.k.a. "boring", and "overlong" on this TB) was intentional and part of the film noir conventions.
There is a reason this film has a large following, and this did not develop long after the film's release. From the post of awards above, you will note that the movie was appreciated in 1982/1983. The film was, frankly, ahead of its time, and its vision, prescience and groundbreaking effects and futurism still hold up today, and are still appreciated by many.
And the line about the intellectual subtexts being imagined by its audience- hogwash. The screenplay was adapted from a short story by Phillip K. Dick, who is no intellectual slouch. The subtexts are quite obvious for educated and observant, not the least of which are the themes of man's struggle with his own mortality, and the exploration of what it means to be human. It's all right there on the screen, my friends.
So please tell us some more about your delusions regarding this film being boring, simple-minded, etc. The minority opinion deserves to be heard, no matter how uniformed.
    And also, go fuck yourselves.
    Just kidding.

True Intellectual Science Fiction, And Speculative Science

    by media messiah

The original Twilight Zone is brlliant...and Blade Runner doesn't come close. Twilight Zone had something to say about the human, and even perhaps, other than human, experience. It was about all facets of life and existence. It covered war, racism, and social religious, and sexual politics of all kinds, and it did it from an enlightened perspective. Blade Runner just showed us some non human badies who were butchered by a hunter, and probably deserved it. From there, the status quo was kept, and nothing learned...just that in life, there is brutality. Well, we already know that. So point of lesson, obvious to everyone, before lesson even started.Another great science fiction/speculative fiction piece, is Silent Running. Again, better than Blade Runner. That film is about self sacrifice and even murder, in the name of a greater goal, this planet's last remainng legacy. While saying something great, and predicting many of the things that we are now going through with the collapse of our eco system, Silent Running, works as a cautionary tale that begs us to preserve our planet...where as Blade Runner says, "Hey, status quo".

    SkinJob69: I Didn't Chop The Ending

    by media messiah

Don't blame me that Harrison Ford's character wasn't shown as being a bio android, blame the filmmakers for chopping that out and making the story largely irrelevant thanks to that part of the story being edited out. That isn't my fault, and I am not assailing the author, but the studio messed up by knocking out that detail, which would have completely change our look at the film, the story, and its characters.

    Messiah, those are good choices...

    by skinjob69

but you are ignoring the fact that all the themes you mention are present and accounted for in Blade Runner as well. They just don't hit you over the head with a sledge hammer. Blade Runner has quite a bit more to say than "Bad guys die at hands of cop." I've never heard the movie reduced to such a simplistic idea, even by its harshest critics.
Consider Dekard's character arc, he sees replicants as soul-less machines at the outset. They are basically slaves (and you can take that for the subtext it implies). What he hasn't appreciated (but is starting to) is that HE is the soul-less one, despite his being a human. Through his interaction with Rachael and the other replicants he sees that they have humanity as well...
"I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die."
That, Messiah, is a real character arc, layered, complex and subtle in its progress. If you can't appreciate that, I can't make it any clearer.

BTW: No ending with deckard as a replicant was shot...

    by skinjob69

Ridley only came out with that after the film's release. He never discussed that prior to the first director's cut, and Ford was never told about this during the shoot.
The unicorn scene that appeared in the director's cut was meant to suggest that Deckard was a rep (it's a dream Deckard has, implanted like Rachael's childhood memories). Gaff leaves an origami unicorn outside Deckards apartment. The significance: he presumably was privy to Deckard's memories as part of his job, and he wanted to convey to Deckard his true identity. Also, he believes both Deckard and Rachael have incep dates approaching, therefore, why not let them go?
Still think the movie is shallow?

From the Wiki entry on Blade Runner...familiar themes?

    by skinjob69

It is a literate science fiction film, thematically enfolding the philosophy of religion and moral implications of human mastery of genetic engineering in the context of classical Greek drama and hubris,[46] and draws on Biblical images, such as Noah's flood,[47] and literary sources, such as Frankenstein.[48] Linguistically, the theme of mortality is subtly reiterated in the chess game between Roy and Tyrell based on the famous Immortal game of 1851,[49] though Scott has said that was coincidental.[50]

Dr Tyrell polarizing his office window to control the Sun implies the god-like powers of the Tyrell Corporation.Blade Runner delves into the implications of technology on the environment and society by reaching to the past, using literature, religious symbolism, classical dramatic themes, and film noir. This tension, among past, present, and future is seen in the retrofitted future of Blade Runner, which is high-tech and gleaming in places but elsewhere decayed and old. Interviewing Ridley Scott in 2002, reporter Lynn Barber in The Observer described the film as: "extremely dark, both literally and metaphorically, with an oddly masochistic feel". Director Scott said he "liked the idea of exploring pain" in the wake of his brother's skin cancer death. "When he was ill, I used to go and visit him in London, and that was really traumatic for me."[8]

A perceptively high level of paranoia exists in the cinematic manifestation of corporate power, omnipresent police, probing lights, and in the power over the individual – especially represented by genetic programming of replicants. Control over the environment is large scale, hand in hand with the absence of any natural life, and with artificial animals substituting for the extinct originals. This oppressive backdrop clarifies why people are migrating to off-world colonies.[51] The film also makes extensive use of eyes for a variety of themes and manipulated images to call into question reality and our ability to accurately perceive and remember it.[52][53][54]

These thematic elements provide an atmosphere of uncertainty for Blade Runner's central theme of examining humanity. In order to discover replicants, an empathy test is used with a number of questions focused on the treatment of animals, thus making it the essential indicator of someone's "humanity". The replicants are juxtaposed with human characters who lack empathy, while the replicants appear to show compassion and concern for one another at the same time as the mass of humanity on the streets is cold and impersonal.

What people aren’t getting is that the original Tron was not an oscar worthy film to be sure, but it was groundbreaking in so many ways. This was an era before everyone had a portable computer attached to their butts. I was one of the few kids I knew that actually owned a computer at the time so the movie did wonders for my imagination. Add to that two very good Tron arcade games and you had a huge impact on my life in the 80’s. Not everyone understands it wasn’t all about the acting quality of the movie.

I liked the orginal "Tron," but found myself yawning and clicking off that video after about fifteen seconds.
Hopefully the final render will be better.

WhinyNegativeBitch: On Blade Runner & Twilight Zone

    by media messiah

My 3 favorite films are Lawrence of Arabia, Citizen Kane and North By North West...so you can't call me an idot based on me pointing out that Dark Knight is a weak film that got a pass because Heath Ledger (a nice guy) died...and that Blade Runner is a boring film without a point...and or, point of view.As for The (original) Twilight Zone, forget the whole series, I can put up any one episode of the Twilight Zone, against Blade Runner and it will still be a better work on a intellectual level. "To Serve Man" for instance, that episode communicated so much in such a short time, with no real budget, no top stars, just a brilliant and sophisticated plot, smart direction..., wonderful acting, and a twist ending that scares the hell out of you. Blade Runner however, had the smart director, it had the wonderful acting...it had stars, it was just missing a meaty plot, and dialogue with a soul. In all its griminess, it was emotionally sterile. Even George Lucas' intentionally sterile THX-1138 had more of a soul, and more real, and emoted emotion, and that is my point. Blade Runner was just a cold procedural cop movie...that just happened to be set in the future...and that is something that critics can easily accept...rather than something with a more broad tapestry, one which dares to challenge central ideas of our paradigm, like saying, at a time when it was not considered okay, a movie that shouted out clearly that corporate greed is killing our planet, this, the message of Silent Running. Now that was bold. Harrison Ford killing a bunch of run away slaves...who happened to be thrill killing murderers, not so bold.

someone names a few classic films as their favorites doesn't mean they can't still be an idiot (or should i say IDOT, and rest my case). it could mean they're just old.

Orcus thinks you missed the entire point of Blade Runner which was "what does it mean to be human", which was just put within the framework if a Future-Noir cop movie. The main point the movie was trying to bring about was how were replicants with false memories more capable of emotion than a human. The movie was not about corporate greed although it was in the background. They recently released the uber dvd set with several cuts of the film, you may wish to make it a netflix night and check out the directors commentaries. And yes the old TZ eps were amazing in their economy of storytelling. Or course the exposition intros do help :)

Orcus: That Is The Problem With The Film

    by media messiah

For us to really explore the question of what is it like to be human, you need the revelation of Harrison Ford's character realizing that he is a replicant. If I had written it...I would have had Rutger Hauer's character, and the other replicants, find-out Deckard's (Ford's) secret as he learns that secret...and now, it isn't only about him trying to kill the villains for his job anymore, now, he has to kill them before they have a chance to expose his secret, as revenge. From there, we would have had the opportunity to look through his eyes...as he deals with the aftermath of the revelation that he is one of the people who he has been killing for money, for years, and not giving a damn. We should have seen him questioning his existence and whether he has a soul, or is he just a machine that will whither and stop working, having no other purpose? Does he know what it is to live...did he ever really know...or is it all just an artifact of computer programming??? This would also give him the empathy for his lover that he didn't have. Before she was a tool, a sex toy, whom he really showed no empathy for, at least, not as much as he might show a human female. Deckard, learning that he is in her shoes...would have an altered way of thinking and his perceptions, about what is right, and what is wrong, and is it okay to treat these machines as slaves, and are they really alive...and should they seek freedom...and does anyone have the right to kill them? Were the replicants he was tracking, and killing, right to kill, and flee??? Now, that would be a story worthy to tell, the one we got is just a overlong set-up, a concept in search of a 2nd and 3rd act. I say...cut down much of what we saw, the slow build-up that often told us nothing, and add what we needed to see, as I have outlined. To better understand these questions about what it is to be human, you have to allow the audience to live vicariously through your hero, as they sympathize with what he is going through, then such questions start to impact the audience on a personal level, begging them to ask, "What is it to be human?" and "What if you were in his shoes?" Without that bridge in the story, you are just on the outside looking in, and you can't really care about the fears of the replicants, as you were never forced, or asked, to relate to them or their plight by the filmmakers. And that is the problem with Blade Runner.

While that is a damn good premise that you have, part of the movie was figuring out if Deckard ws human, depending on which cut was viewed you either had it as ambiguous or definite. Case and point all the replicants had that weird red eye glow in certain scenes which Deckard shared, that and the fact that the total tally of replicants that escaped was never fully reconciled, leaving the audience to wonder if Deckard was the final replicant. Now in the Final cut, Ridly Scott actually went on the record that Deckard was the final Replicant. In addition this was the point of putting in the Unicorn Dream Sequence Which tied it to Gaff's Oragami of a Unicorn, and his final line, which told the Audience that he knew Deckards Secret.
