The DESPERATION casting

Published at:  Jul 20, 1999 3:58:15 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with some interesting casting rumors on Stephen King's latest book to film... DESPERATION. Last I heard this was being directed by Mick Garris, director of the TV mini-series versions of THE SHINING and THE STAND, and was in turn-around at NEW LINE... But who knows, perhaps ol Brian Witten finally got the verde luz from the powers on high to move this project into the active realm of the universe. I don't have this cast confirmed yet.... But I'm working on it, so listen to the sailor for now...

"Desperation"
casting and pre-production is very tight at the moment, but I can say that the principal cast, so far,
has been decided, and is as follows: Kevin Spacey, Juliette Lewis, and Miko
Hughes will play the Carver family, Nick Nolte will play Collie Entragian,
and Milla Jovovich is set to have an unspecified female role in the cast.

    Nolte in the sun

    by badashe

Are you sure you want Nick Nolte in the desert sun? Remember how much he sweated in U-turn and Mulholland Falls? He'll drop dead in the first 15 minutes. I read this book a while back and I am unsure about this casting. I get the fact that Milla is playing Cynthia that Steve picks up. Who is going to play John Marinville? He is kinda the lynchpin of the story. Juliette Lewis? Who is she supposed to be playing? Mary Jackson? This definitely has alot of potential, but Walken really would have been a better choice to play Entragian. It will be cool to see how they adapt the script since they have a name playing Entragian.

    The OoZy Cop

    by danito burrito

I absolutely devoured Desperation, but I will NOT read that thing again. Way better than The Regulators tho'. Nick Nolte, tho' he can easily act the part of a twisted, possessed, oozing poleeth-man easily, he's not someone I would have chosen. I honestly never thought this would come to fruitation, so I'll deal with havin'him as Collie. Chris Walken, even though I absolutely adore his sense of humor, is not meant for a part like this. Not unless you're casting out of character. The cop needs to be big and bulky. Too bad they don't think of any younger, better lookin'actors that fit the description. Not that Nick ain't good lookin' enuff. Hehehe :X He'll definately do for THIS part. LOL! I love Stephen. I hope he gets a chance to put his shining face in this one somewhere. hrmmm Now wouldn't it be hilarious if He, THE Man, played the writer in th'story. (it's a nice thought, anyway, huh? can'tcha just see him ridin'his haWg down desert hwy... up on the silver screen?!?! awesome) This WILL be a good movie. I *wish* there'd be a darK Tower movie, but that ain't gunna happen. But should it ever... I want the same guy to play Randall Flagg that played him in the Stand (on the tube). He was wonderful. "hope ya catch my name" *eyeroll* He was the comic relief to his own villany. :) My kinda guy. toodles!

    Dark Tower movies

    by g

To address the question about whether or not we will see a Dark Tower movie, I would say a big wopping no; at least for another 10 years or so. The series isn't even done yet: 3 more books to write; speculated by King to be finished 2004 or so (each a few years apart from one another). However, since that frickin' nitwit in his truck totalled Mr.King, putting him in serious physical rehab, I would say the projected dates are seriously pushed back now. I'd laugh if King sued that idiot for lost wages. That guy's great-grandkids would be poor. Anyways, more importantly, I think the series is far too complex and LONG to make into a movie, and I would seriously cringe at a tv mini-series (they've been pretty horrible so far). Being my favourite set of books, I would like to some sort of big-screen adaptation, but I don't think it is possible physically, and if so, not for a long time.

    Finally!!

    by maxx fury

Allright!! *TAK* Next to the Dark Tower series this was the other book I was hoping to be made into a film. *TAK* Its perfect. *TAK* Its got some great blood and guts stuff, and some strange religious undertones. *TAK* But, who would play the kid?? *TAK* Oh well, guess we'll just have to send out some coyote scouts to figure it out. *TAK*

More on the Dark Tower Movies

    by quint

Besides the fact that the series isn't finished yet, as stated above, you also have King's unwillingness to allow the films to be made. He's come out and said openly that there will be no Dark Tower movies while he is alive.
Personally, even though I love the Dark Tower books, I'm more anxious about The Talisman. I've heard that Spielberg has the rights to make the film, but he's had 'em for a long time and hasn't done anything with them yet. I think a Spielberg directed Talisman would be amazing. Who knows, maybe after the Lord of the Rings films everybody will have a thirst for Fantasy and Spielberg will decide to make it. Could happen.

    Spacey? bullshit

    by nik

I don't think after starring in THE USUAL SUSPECTS, L.A. CONFIDENTAL, and the triumphant run of THE ICEMAN COMETH on broadway, that an actor like Kevin Spacey would lower himself from those apexes to play a character in a horror movie who ends up torn apart by a possessed eagle. Even if it was a King novel. Wake up- this is somebody dream-casting during a boring time at the office. I mean, Nick Nolte as the sherrif? They probably saw his performance in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" one too many times. Mlla in an "unspecified role". Right-O.
This is the most ludicrous bit of misinformation, well...since someone said that Chris Walken was playing the role of Collie in "Despiration".

    Dark Tower and Kevin Spacey

    by pope buck 1

Excuse me, but I don't think it would be considered "lowering himself" for Kevin Spacey to consider doing a Steven King movie -- at least, not the way it would have been about 10 years ago, before "Misery" and "Stand By Me" were made and Kathy Bates won an Oscar. They're prestige projects now! Look at Tom Hanks, starring in "The Green Mile"! As for future installments of the "Dark Tower" series being pushed back because of SK's accident -- what else has he got to do with his time now, except write? Go ballroom dancing? If anything, the accident should make him MORE prolific!

    Clancy Brown!

    by kurg

Collie's part was written for him. A real shame we won't see him shine in a role that he would be as suited to as his role in Highlander.

    Nick Nolte

    by quint

Just a quick point, Gary Busey played the highway sherrif in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, not Nick Nolte.

    This is not real...

    by jimmy conway

If anyone believes that this is the real cast to this movie, they are insane. Desperation is a guaranteed four-hour miniseries, and the closest Spacey, Nolte, and Lewis will get to it is watching it at home!

    Nik! re: spacey, Bullshit

    by cinemapen

It wasn't Nolte in "Fear and Loathing" as the sherrif, it was Gary Busey. Personally, I think Nolte's a VERY interesting choice for Collie, and Spacey, though he's a terrific actor in everything, IS miscast as Jackson (if that is who he is playing.) Still, since he has that everyman appeal (a slightly learned everyman, natch) then maybe he can pull it off.

    Oops

    by cinemapen

Just re-read the news-story from sailor. Spacey as Carver. He was the drunk, right? Hmmmm....

Not sure if that'd work, but I think the chap above me is probably right by saying that if this is a mini-series, none of these folks will be anywhere near the set of the production.

Am I the only person who thinks the whole Garris/King thing is aggrivating?

    No! No Dark Tower Movie!

    by miss direction

You guys scared me with your post titles! The Dark Tower books are not only too complex and long for a film treatment, but who would play him? We all have our Rolands in our heads and I bet very few of them match. On the other hand.....imagine a Dark Tower CDROM game!!

Great idea!, but there's no way this will be the cast of Desperation. By the way. I read the book and only one name as Collie came to my mind: RUTGER HAUER !!

    Desperation

    by son of yoda

First, I want to comment on the guy above who said the Dark Man in the Stand miniseries was excellent. He was not. THe Dark Man was supposed to be menacing and mysterious, not a reject from an '80s big hair band. Ideal casting for that role? Clint Eastwood.
As for Desperation, the book was marginal, so I don't expect much from the movie. Nick Nolte is fine, so is Kevin Spacey. I have no idea who those other humps are. However, I think the role of the kid should be played by the same kid that was in that "The Shining" debacle! Imagine, we could have another two hours to listen to his snoring sounds while he breathed!!! If the brat had a cold during filming of "The Shining," couldn't they give him a damn Sudafed? If they put him in, I'll be rooting for the coyote when he trys to escape from the jail cell. TAK, ah lah!

    Dark Tower

    by yodafett

Understanding that the books are very complex and involving, and taking into account the inherent problems with logisitics in filming, I do not think I would be remiss in saying that, personally, I would like to see a dark tower series of movies. If you combine Gunslinger and Drawing of the three, and Waste Lands and Wizard & Glass, and then the rest you could have a very well made series of movies. I would not, however, enjoy seeing my favorite books translated to the small screen via miniseries, it would be an abomination to the scope of the story. This is a tale best told on the big screen. I am a film student and I have been working on adapting these books already, unofficially of course, and I believe that they translate very well.

This is obviously a false tip.

    by henry fool

This an A-list cast that would exceed the salaries of a network ro cable channel mini series. These actors also don't fit the roles in this book. Harry, please have someone read novels such as these in order to verifty such rumors.
