A flick about the life of Judy Garland in the works! The Weinsteins GET HAPPY!

Published at:  Feb 03, 2009 11:54:39 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Looks like the Weinsteins want to get into the Judy Garland business. They've optioned a book called GET HAPPY: THE LIFE OF JUDY GARLAND written by Gerald Clarke, whose Truman Capote biography was optioned and turned into CAPOTE a few years back. Variety has the story!

That was a solid movie and I have no doubt that Garland's notorious high ups and low downs life will make for an incredible vehicle for an actress.

I'm wondering if this trend will continue. There's already a Steve McQueen biopic in the works. I wonder how many vintage stars' life will be retold if one of these movies gets made and does well, either with Awards or hits big at the Box Office.

Now the casting ideas begin. Who could play Judy Garland? I'd insist the actress can sing in that gorgeous baritone that Garland hit. I'm drawing a blank trying to think of someone known. Who could be youthfully innocent, but also play the older, haunted Garland? Thoughts?

She could probably do anything, and she already knows age make-up inside and out. You're not going to get anything better with someone who looks more like Garland.

Read that somewhere. Insane. As for Garland, they should cast a new face.

That TV movie was pretty good

    by cherryvalance

With Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard. (I think that's her name.) I think biopics need a rest. Cadillac Records was a pretty good movie, but I still felt like I'd seen it a bunch of times. It's the same story over and over. Just like how all the "Behind the Music"s fell into a few categories. Someone stole all their money, they were on drugs/OD'd, or someone turned out to be gay, etc. I think Elton John was the only one who had all 3. What is it with those musicians/entertainers and their patterns?

Emily Blunt or Evan Rachel Wood.

    by annoyyou

Both can sing. Blunt because she's a good actress, Wood because she's batshit crazy, rather like Garland.

How amazed he was when her first saw her on the big screen. Her staring eyes and fat neck.

I would choose Zooey Deschanel. Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway are good choices too. In reality they'll probally cast reese Witherspoon. Either way who cares! I wanna see biopics of Hendrix and Joplin! Who would you all choose to play Hendrix? What happened to the Joplin movie with Zooey? Deschanel anyway.

They are currently running with a Janis Joplin biopic storyline on '30 Rock' and it is hilarious. Universal doesn't have the rights yet, so until they do it is the "Janet Joppler Story" with songs like 'Take Another Little Chunk of my Lung'. Jane Krakowski is funnier than she's been in the whole show's run as the actress desperate to play Joplin even though she knows nothing about her. "Take a note from Janis, she knew when to say when. I'm only halfway through the book, how does it end?"

    Winslet

    by bigmikey

La Winslet would be a good choice. She's already had a hit single and belted out tracks elsewhere so her pipes could handle the tunes (though her natural pitch is a little higher than Garland's), and she can do both young and older pretty well. Plus she'd have no problems with any of the darker stuff. And, finally, she'd look damn sweet wearing one of those pointy conical bras they used to wear ...

But the hell with that question - for the inevitable scenes where she's shooting "A Star Is Born" who the hell is going to play James Mason? And Mickey Rooney in one of those "Andy Hardy" movies for that matter ... ?

    Baritone?

    by bunch-backdtoad

Quint, do you know anything about music? Judy Garland isn't a baritone. Howard Keel is a baritone. Judy is an alto. You could also call her a belter.

As far as the singing goes...

    by bunch-backdtoad

They should just dub it. Judy Garland is the best singer that ever lived. There isn't a person on earth that can sing like she can. The closest anyone's ever come is her daughter, and Liza's even got a totally different tone quality.

    Why even make this?

    Anne Hathaway....

    by crazynuts

    And here is why:

This is what you said (word by word) you're looking for in the actress that will play Judy:

-"Actress can sing": Anne Hathaway is a trained Soprano and kicks butt on stage (without going to far, and without trying to hard, she stole Jackman's thunder in that intro of them at the oscars).

-"I'm drawing a blank trying to think of someone known": Annie is America's sweetheart, or isnt people calling her the new "Julia Roberts"? We love her and Critics love her, everybody loves her (something she has in comun with Garland)

-"Who could be youthfully innocent, but also play the older, haunted Garland? Thoughts?" Yeah, Anne Hathaway looks youthfully innocent, and earned her first oscar nom doing just what you are looking for as the dark side of Garland.

That kid will blow people away as Judy Garland....

And just as a bunus: She kinda looks like Judy, and is able to carry a movie by herself.

I tell you she wont dissapoint and even tho she already proof she can act, and sing, people will be surprised by her. That kid is pure magic on screen.
