Behind The Scenes Of AMC's Remake Of THE PRISONER!!

Published at:  Feb 03, 2009 11:08:45 AM CST

Merrick here...

AMC has been posting a lot of material from the currently-in-production remake of THE PRISONER.

This time around, James Caviezel stars at Number Six (the role originated by Patrick McGoohan) and Sir Ian McKellen is Number Two. One of my favorite/under-appreciated actors, Lennie James, will appear as 147 (Lennie was recently seen as the badass CIA operative-gone-native in the CBS series JERICHO). The overall arc of the original series' 17 episodes is being distilled into a miniseries format.

Here's an embed of a recently posted video from the shoot, which offers (among other things) our first hint that some level of retro production design may be afoot for certain elements of the miniseries.

If you go HERE & look to the right of the screen, you'll find a menu offering more behind-the-scenes material from the project. There's also a running blog of the miniseries' production, which can be found HERE.

You can find streaming (and free) video of the entire 1967 progenitor series HERE, and THIS LINK will carry you to AMC's official site for the new show.

"Working with Gandalf and Jesus...then I showed up..." That's pretty funny.

And you can't remake the Prisoner.

    "Who are you?"
    "The new number two."
    "Who is number one?"
    "You are, number six."

The insertion of that comma in the last line makes all the difference in the world. (When you've seen the last episode.)

You don't tug on Superman's Cape. You don't Spit into the wind. You also don't pull the mask off that ole lone ranger and you don't mess around with Jim. When a show and an actor are master class and untouchable, its useless to even paint the set walls. Its as futile as trying to bottle sunshine. This remake cannot be done. I will never understand the perchant for endless remakes in Hollywood. Like they said in Red dwarf - "Why would you even bother to remake Casablanca? the 2034 version was definitive!"

    by annoyyou

Whose idea was this? As if some right-wing holier-than-thou subpar B actor could take the place of the great McGoohan. This blows. Why doesn't Caviezel go back to church with Mel Gibson and leave the re-makes alone? And couldn't the producers have found someone better? For God's sake, Tim Roth is now on US network TV! This makes no sense and is a huge disappointment.

    by grendel745

I'm avoiding much (but obviously not all) so as to be as open minded as I can possibly be about this project. I'm just curious if anyone knows if this is a remake, re-imagining (ugh) or continuation (ala the Dean Motter mini-series). The Prisoner was my first sample of intelligent TV and those 17 episodes are pure gold. I like the actors well enough but am filled with some trepedation when I hear "Nambia" instead of "Portmeirion" and the idea of one actor playing Number 2.

The original is dated but the intent can transcend time. In this day of internet, nanny cams, and CCTV, a remake of "The Prisoner" is very needed. By the way, listen to "Degree Absolute" and you can hear Leo McKern refer to #6 as "Drake."

One of Neil Gaiman's "Miracleman" stories was about a place called The City where a spy lived after being separated from service. She didn't know whom to trust, who might be a double, who might be a triple, who might be her superior even though she had quit. Finally a character from earlier in the series came to her and told her that she could have left anytime. She did, and in her new city she wondered if the cabbie stared a little too long, if the postman was unusually sinister, if her lover really loved her or was maintaining a cover ... and so forth. Interesting story.

    by bellwether

and this looks promising. I walked through the Tatooine sets in Tunisia, but it's Namibia that makes you feel you've actually reached another planet. There are parts that are utterly spectacular and otherworldly, so I think it's a good place for the Village (and the endless dunes and pans will add to the feeling of isolation). It looks like they're filming some of it in Swakopmund, which is full of interesting locations. I like Portmierion, and obviously it's a surreal place, but parts of Swakop could do quite nicely - even everyday locations like the old lighthouse and the playground in the main square look a little weird. Add McKellan and this looks really interesting.

    by tinspider

But the original quirkyness of the original seems to be missing.. and these little things made it for me. The same typeface on everything, the badges, the odd costumes and the claustrophobic feel of The Village. (Portmerion is even smaller in real life)

I'm sure they won't have 'be seeing you' as a regular phrase either.

On the AMC Prisoner site they mention that a movie is still in the works and they are completely separate projects. Whether Nolan is helming the movie, who knows.
I haven't been able to watch teh clips yet due to our network nazis at work (imagine expecting everyone to use company network banwidth for working!), but even as diehard a Prisoner fan as I am, I really think a remake could be very good as long as it is faithful to the spirit of the original. I don't mind only one Number 2 (one Ian McKellan No. 2 certainly equals at least a handful of spare No. 2's), and I don't mind that they're not filming it in Portmerion. If they are just trying to recreate the original, they will fail miserably. This has to be its own thing. If it's true to the spirit and the ideas of the original, I'll be happy.

They'll hire Kevin James for cameos in a couple of episodes. Solid (though-the-roof) ratings insurance and indispensable comedy relief. This whole thing is going to be more pretentious than a Tina Fey award-acceptance speech. The word "genius" has been trivialized but it certainly applies to the late Patrick McGoohan; he wasn't a camera whore (re George Clooney) but a rather reclusive man who was as driven, and equally bright, as screenwriter Nigel Kneale (THE QUATERMASS EXPERIMENT).
