The great Aaron (not Alan) Sorkin, who first made his mark on cinema with “A Few Good Men,” has scripted “The Challenge,” about a Navy lawyer representing Osama Bin Laden’s driver, who was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for five years. It’s based on Jonathan Mahler’s book The Challenge: Hamdan v. Rumsfeld and the Fight over Presidential Power. Fans of “A Few Good Men” will recall the Tom Cruise/Jack Nicholson movie was about a Navy lawyer exposing dark deeds committed at Guantanamo Bay. George Clooney, whose prior big-screen directorial efforts include the excellent Charlie Kaufman-scripted “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” as well as “Good Night, and Good Luck” and “Leatherheads,” wants to direct and play the lawyer, according to Tuesday morning’s Variety. “Leatherheads” was written by one the “Arli$$” writers, so Sorkin’s hiring may reflect a lesson taken away from that project. Sorkin also wrote the A-plus movies “An American President” and “Charlie Wilson’s War,” as well as the TV series “Sports Night,” “The West Wing” and “Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip.” Find all of Variety’s story on the matter here.
