FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Boss Jason Katims Developing New Hourlong Version of PARENTHOOD For NBC!!

Published at:  Jan 29, 2009 2:34:20 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

The great Jason Katims, the “My So-Called Life” vet who masterminded ABC’s “Relativity” and The WB’s “Roswell” before he became showrunner on NBC’s “Friday Night Lights,” will now oversee a new TV version of the blockbuster 1989 Steve Martin dramedy “Parenthood.”

If the project goes forward, Katims’ “Parenthood” will be NBC’s second series based on the movie, the network having already aired a short-lived half-hour sitcom version in late 1990.

"Parenthood" trivia:

* Leonardo DiCaprio played the sitcom version of Garry Buckman, embodied by Joaquin "Leaf" Phoenix in the movie version.

* MTV's "Remote Control" host Ken Ober played Nathan Merrick, the sitcom version of Rick Moranis' Nathan Huffner character.

* Joss Whedon wrote on the “Parenthood” sitcom two years before the movie version of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” marked his feature debut.

    Thank God

    by blackhole4140

Just what we were all asking for. Maybe they can get some of the cast back from My So Called Life and make it a sequel. I hear that's what the kids are into.

A movie sequel 20 years later would've been interesting

    by angry mike

As a tv series, it will just be another run of the mill dramedy.

I guess this means FNL is dead?

    by xiphos_2

That's damn shame, FNL was a fantastic show. Good luck Mr. Katims on your new project.

and this will be a different show how?

    by sirflibble

Than almost any other family based series?

I agree with Angry Mike, at least make it a sequel. Have Steve Martin pop up in the pilot as Grand pa or someshit.

Little Justin Buckman is a friend of mine

    by shwanzi

That's rigth. Actor Zachary La Voy, who played the youngest son in both the feature film and the TV series, is a good friend of mine and makes it a point to mention occasionally that he was once the "son" of Steve Martin and Mary Steenburgen. He's a great guy who's trying to get back into the acting game after a long absence... something I'm trying to help him with.

Now that I think of it he's coming to my place on Saturday to check out my BluRay of Repo! The Genetic Opera. Fun stuff!

No, there's no word on if FNL will go forward, but Parenthood has nothing to do with the life or death of that show. Katims would run both shows, and that shouldn't be a big problem as production offices will likely be next to each other. That said, consider that Season 2 happened when Katims was called in to rescue Bionic Woman.

What next? A retooling of Working Girl?

    by skimn

If they're stealing ideas from the past, I still think a series/movie based on the old Robert Wagner series It Takes A Thief would work. Although with all the covert and special ops that I'm sure the govt uses, framing a cat burgler/thief to do our dirty work doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the info, I just asumed the worse with FNL since not many people seem to be watching. I didn't know Katims worked on Bionic Women. That poor bastard.

It's not doing GREAT in the ratings, but it's doing well enough that it can be spun positively - the last two weeks held at a steady 1.6; worse than their average from last season but better than Lipstick Jungle was doing. Since it's only 13 episodes and it's playing at 9:00 anyway (and wouldn't have to be moved for Jay Leno), it's not hard to imagine that NBC could hang onto it as long as the ratings don't slide into oblivion.Again, though, don't take it as gospel. That number is definitely low enough to justify a cancellation.

    by evilwizardglick

I'm amazed that anyone accepts tired old retreads of tired old movies and tv series. Jesus you gotta pay the cable to watch this crap. Yet some of you dumb shits are oohing and ahhing like this is the most exciting creation in television history. Me personally I'll stop watching tv because most of it is shit.

    How he has a job

    by craig2574

They blamed the writers strike last year. After Leno bombs he will not be albe to hide.

To make Jay happy they are going to destroy the Tonight Show, Late Night,10PM hour and the local news. Should have let Leno go. He will beat Conan at first but in 5 years Conan will be the top dog. Very short term thinking by Bull Shit.

    by incomplete gamer

I suspect you may be right that Conan will eventually outdo Leno, however, I'm not as confident as you seem to be. Especially now that Conan is losing to Craig Ferguson in the ratings. If he can't even beat Ferguson how is he going to beat Leno?
