NARNIA Saga Now In The Hands Of Tom Rothman’s Fox!!

Published at:  Jan 29, 2009 12:53:11 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Twentieth Century Fox will now partner on Walden Media’s Narnia movies following Disney’s decision last month to pull out of the franchise.

I’m sure many will share my level of excitement as the studio behind “Eragon” is now helping to steer the adventures of the plucky Pevensie clan.

The first Fox entry in the saga will be “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” Fox and Walden are aiming for a $140 million budget, considerably less money than was employed by the two Disney chapters.

Fox's 2008 theatrical distribution output included such genre titles as "Nim's Island," "Jumper," "The Happening," "Meet Dave," "Space Chimps," "The X-Files: I Want To Believe," "Babylon A.D.," "City of Ember," "Max Payne" and "The Day The Earth Stood Still."

Read all of Variety’s story on the matter here.

worst studio on the best book

    by vadakinx

Dawn Treader is considered by many to be the best Narnia novel (though Silver Chair fans would disagree). Now that it's in the hands of Fox, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a 70 minute, explosion heavy, plot light ass fest.

Having said that, if Walden has control over the films and Fox puts up the cash and distributes without typical interference from Rothman then maybe it will turn out ok...or not.

I caught him on the Fox movie channel before an airing of the original Planet of the Apes tooting the studios horn about how ahead of the curve 20th century fox was when it came to film in the '60s. The only thing that appearance did was illustrate how mediocre Rothman is as president of Fox movies. Richard Zanuck took risks with his movies as illustrated by making Planet of the Apes. Rothman plays it safe by REMAKING Planet of the Apes.

well, there's no big battle in Dawn Treader, unlike the first two books. It's much quieter with more intimate moments. But there is the sea stuff, and Eustace becoming the dragon and all. So maybe the smaller budget will force them to do things in a more focused way.

Your distribution of Star Wars made the world fall in love with your logo. But man, that generation has grown up! Compare your slate to Warner Bros: BY NO MEANS is Warner Bros all successful, but at least they took a few risks some of which paid off (Dark Knight), others not (Speed Racer). I know there is plenty of average dross there too - Get Smart, One ? Years BC, Journey to the Centre of the Earth - but with a Dark Knight on your list, and a year of upcoming that includes Watchmen, Harry Potter and Terminator 4, who cares?

    by redhhades

based in the weakest book. It was far better than MANY summer offers and MUCH better than Twilight, for example. It was released in the wrong time of the year and eaten by the summer crowded slot. FOX will only distribute the movie and co-finance it, they are not doing it. And even if they were, it could end up being good as well. But, guess so, if it was WARNER, I bet everyone here would be happy. I can't help but wait and see when the next WB offers start crashing and burning and fanboys starts their campaign excuse them. I have a feeling (unfortunately), Watchmen will just open the road...

While I can't defend most of the shit Fox does...

    by thedarklinglord

I think a $140 million dollar budget is more than adequate. I mean, I know these films are supposed to be epic and grandiose, and there's a huge amount of CGI and special effects involved, but if you can't make a decent movie with a $140 million, then you probably shouldn't be in the industry. Learn to fucking budget your money better and learn how to do more with less.

And, seriously, how much are these films earning? Because they seem to receive fairly mediocre reviews and once they're released you don't tend to hear much about them. They definitely don't seem to be on par with The Lord of the Rings, or even the Star Wars prequels, in that they don't seem to generate a passionate opinion one way or another. So, while it shouldn't be all about money, if the movies aren't making enough profit, if they don't offer the incentive for financial growth, I'd saythey're lucky to be given a budget to continue the story at all.

Of course, the real question is what other restrictions and requirements Fox will be piling on the project. Like, are they already demanding a Christmas 2009 release, thereby severely limiting the planning and production time, forcing the filming schedule to be rushed and sloppy? Are they going to take the slash-and-burn approach they used with X-Men 3, where Rothman throws a whiny little bitch tantrum, driving people - people who might have given a fuck about the movie - off the project and slotting in any shitty replacement who'll promise to deliver on time and under budget, regardless of quality? Will Fox honor the established films and make a genuine effort to keep the recurring cast, or will they immediately replace anyone who won't bend to their will and accept whatever terms they offer?

I have zero faith in Fox. But, hey, there's always the chance they'll completely fuck up and somehow stumble into some dumb luck and manage to get things right.

Seriously now, someone needs to put that studio out of it's and our misery. It really is just a shell of it's former self, surviving purely by the raping of it's past glories. by grammaton cleric binks

but Prince Caspian was horrid in that it totally went off script from the book. There was no castle invasion, the Narnians were supposed to be myths, not extinct, and Caspian was supposed to be younger than Peter. Dawn Treader can redeem the franchise, but if they make it they need to get busy as Scrubb is in Dawn Treader, Silver Chair, and the Last Battle, and he ages normally. Whereas Magician's Nephew and A Horse and His Boy can be made anytime. You can even have new actors or the same actors as the Pevenses in The Last Battle as they are several years older, and it makes no difference.

Very little CGI would be needed. It could have more Conanesque feel as far as the cinematography. Disney should not do it though. I'm the last person in the world to support what Disney has become, but the NARNIA movies were getting better. I was hoping NARNIA would follow the same path as ther Potter franchise and keeping getting better as you go. CASPIAN was head and shoulders better than WARDROBE. Which is kinda funny since the book "Prince Caspian" is probably the second worst book in the series, next to the last one, "The Last Battle." Not saying CASPIAN was great, but at least it had substance to it where WARDROBE did not. Similarly with the first two Potter films compared to the 3rd. The place finally looked lived in. The characters, while still not a lot, finally had some depth. I was really hoping DAWN TREADER would be the breakout film of the series. It also happens to be one of my favorite books of the series. Second only to "The Silver Chair."

I loved the first two Narnia movies. Most of the criticism tossed at Caspian was baseless. It would have been disappointing to have the series end with just two installments. Except, now with Rothman on board, I have this perverse desire to see just how terrible things can get. . .and I imagine that things could get pretty terrible.
I'm envisioning Voyage turning into a Pirates of the Caribbean/Sinbad/Hercules style adventure, complete with partial nudity, massive explosions, and corny one-liners ("This water's drinkable light. . .as light as. . .as. . .water!!!!!" OH SNAP).

Fox just be paying a distribution fee to release the Narnia movies, but it is likely that Walden, like Lucasfilm, retains complete control over their C.S. Lewis properties.
That's probably the only way you can do business with Fox. If Marvel makes movies with them in the future, go in with total control of your property, ask Fox if they want to distribute for a fee and that's that.
You can rag on George Lucas for a lot of things, but I have to give him major props for his business acumen. He knows how to deal with backstabbing, know-nothing Hollywood types.

Muslims invaded the US Embassy in Iran and took American hostages. Muslims tried to bomb the world trade center once, and succeeded on a second attempt when terrorists bombed the world trade center. Muslims send suicide bombers to Israeli markets killing people indiscriminantly, and fire rockets into their cities. Muslims are trying to overthrow the government in Afghanistan by using suicide bombers. It appears that, although nothing proven yet, that Muslims were responsible for the Mumbai bombing in India. After freeing Iraq from Hussein (and yes, W was an idiot, and no, we shouldn't have been there or be there, but that aside) Shiite and Sunni Muslims have the chance to live in peace together without persecution. What do they do? Bomb each other. Am I missing something here, or is your only defense against truth an infantile comment instead of a relevant discussion. And as I've said a million times, not all Muslims are terrorists, but don't try and even pretend they're not out there. Newspapers can't even publish a picture of Mohammed without being threatened. Do you seriously think a studio is going to release a movie like A Horse and His Boy or The Last Battle? Rant all you want, but the ultimate defense against libel is the truth.

honestly, was it badly acted, badly scripted, bad action...what exactly is the reason people think it was terrible, yes it did deviate from the book, but that doesn't make it a bad movie, just not a great interprtation of the source material but fuck that, those were the books these are the movies, its two different forms of media they should at least be somewhat different..now i do not think the movie was perfect, i felt it had some pacing issues and could have done with some finer editing, but its not a terrible movie, if it wasn't sandwhich in with the other major blockbusters this summer it would have been in several top 10 listsdisney are bitches, they were looking for a film to go up against ironman and indy and they thought caspian could do it, but they were wrong and rather then admit they made a mistake with the relase date, they just drop the franchise all together. well as much as FOX has let me down these passsed few years, i wish them all the best i hope these movies go on to make sevral billion dollars and disney is left looking like the idiots who lets a cash cow slip through their fingers

    by performingmonkey

I always thought Caspian was by far the weakest book anyway, even though the idea of Narnia of old being dead for centuries and ruled over by this nasty human race is a pretty strong and far out idea for the SECOND book of a kids' fantasy series. But there was NO DEPTH. The movie brought in that depth, whether you like it or not. The Telmarines were IMO brilliantly realised. The guy playing Miraz did an excellent job, as did his generals. The ONLY bad thing was the acting of the guy playing Caspian, but that was partly because you can't help but laugh at his Mexican/Spanish/Italian/whatever accent (he normally has an English accent). He was still believable as Caspian, and Peter, Susan etc. were pretty good too. I reckon the youngest girl, Lucy, has a real career ahead of her. If she keeps on track she could be great, maybe the next Keira or Kate Winslet or something (OK that's jumping the gun, she's like 11 or something, but she CAN act).

Fox can't kill Narnia...since it was already dead.

    by ash talon

Wardrobe was a cute movie but lacking any real substance.

Caspian was so bad in the first half, I almost walked out. The kids aren't good actors. Going off a mediocre script. And getting bad direction from a guy that obviously doesn't know how to communicate with actors. The villain was rather lame. There's a kernal of an idea about equality between humans and animals/monsters, but it certainly wasn't cultivated properly. As others have said, Caspian himself was lifeless and uninspiring. And the general story was a mess. That enough of a critique? And I love fantasy. I'll even watch whatever crappy syndicated fantasy show is playing on Saturday afternoons this year.

BTW, all the X-Men movies suck. Not just X3. The first two were messes. No character development other than Wolverine. No real tension. X2 was just a longer version of X1 but without any villains for the X-Men to fight. And it had plot holes the size of mack trucks in it. How it gets some geek adorement is beyond me.

That said, Fox does suck as a studio. I just don't think the Narnia films can get much worse. Caspian was a huge dude.

... in the end where OK movies. Not great by any means, but certainly not that bad as people has trashed them... Narnia movies haven't been that good anyways, so I don't think the change of studio to Fox is going to damage that much. Mediocrity to mediocrity.

I won't assume to speak for him, but a lot of people on this site don't mind hating Christians, but scream foul if the word Muslim is even mentioned. It's like the Isaac Hayes hypocrisy. He would bash any religion on South Park, but once you talked about scientology it was like "oh no, insulting religion (only mine) is wrong." As I've stated anyone can spew their little curse words to make them feel like a big person instead of trying to discuss an issue with some semblance of reason, rationality, and logic. Bottom line is you'll never win an argument with a crazy person.

You're dead on correct. I grew up in a mildly Christian household, my wife is Muslim, I work in a VERY diverse place with Mormons, Jews, Muslims...and as much as I may think their particular theologies are bat-shit crazy, they are still some of the kindest, easy going people I've met.
I don't judge religions, I can only assess individual practicioners.
But you will hear the defense here from BSB and others saying :No, it's not ALL Jews (or Christians or insert said religion)" Just some! It's kind of like the red neck who says to his black friend "I don't like black people but you're ok!" ...and thinks he's paying him a compliment.

OK, "CHRONICLES" it says, well then why did they start in the middle...do it right, start at the beginning, even if you have to combine a couple of the books...some folks don't know how the lantern got there! Also I am so tired of some people who are trying to force "religion" on everything we enjoy. I just don't get it...why can't any classic just stand on its own merit without people trying to read their own twist to it. It's a marvelous series and is fun to read again and again. Leave it at that.

Excellent. Doctor Who? can you honestly not see anything wrong in the gross generalisations that you're throwing around? People would shit one if you called ETA or the IRA "catholic terrorists" but that's what they are. I actually think that your pigheaded redneck analogy is wrong. You've got it reversed- by labelling the minority you're actually the rednecked fuck saying to a black guy "I thought you lot were all like this, but you're OK". I don't like any organised religion, and am prepared to badmouth Islam as much as Christianity. Having said that, though, I don't care if you worship whatever, just don't inflict it on me .

    Exposed

    by doctorwho?

You're right Lost Jarv...they are "Catholic terrorists" and wonder of wonders...YOUR USE OF THAT PHRASE DOES NOT OFFEND ME. Suprised? Just because such a statement is used does not call ALL CATHOLICS into question. I can't believe I'm typing such a BLATANTLY OBVIOUS observation. I will not call you a bigot nor claim you are using hate speech. It is an empirical statement and you get a cookie for applying some logic for a change.
So fine...you called them Catholic terrorists. I'm down. Why is it that you bristle then a talk backer types the 2 words 'Islamic' and 'terror' together?
Note however, that a "Catholic terrorist" statement doesn't stir up up mobs of screaming people in Rome burning things in effigy. Why do you think that is? I honestly do not know.
And as for "hate speech" BSB...your definition of such is arrived at by your 'feelings' and not your rational thought! Did he say he hates Muslims or finds them to be sub-human? Did I miss that? Sounded pretty tame to me.
Apply some critical thinking and step your game up instead of emoting all over the place while pointing fingers and screaming bigot.

THE LION, THE WITCH & THE WARDROBE was the first Narnia book written and published and despite the later changing of the numbering to reflect the chronological order of the story, every dramatizer has chosen to select LION as the first story filmed.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Narnia#Reading_order

    by lost jarv

to tar a whole religion because of the minority- The point is that neither ETA or the IRA are reffered to as Catholic Terrorists- and they aren't representative of the whole catholic population. Al Qaeda, Hamas etc do not represent all of the muslim population, so perhaps another perjorative term should be found for them.

The first film felt to plastic. The world didn't look as if anyone lived in it. It wasn't a terrible film, just a bland one. I've only read the first book when I was younger (and being indoctrinated into Christianity) so I'm not terribly familiar with Prince Caspian.

I won't belabor the point Jarv...

    by doctorwho?

And yes, I do see where he's coming from BSB...I just think it is flawed respectfully. Here's my example Jarv:
If Guy who happens to be a Christian commits a horrible crime...he is simply a criminal.
If the same Christian guy commits a horrible crime IN THE NAME OF CHRISTIANITY/JESUS etc...then yes, he is a Christian fundamentalist wacko-terrorist. That's fair. HE declared it. It's accurate. It's not some arbitrary lable thrown at him to marginalize OTHER Christians.
If other Christians were to take offense to that...then they can go fuck themselves. They should take offense at the clown who committed the crime, denounce him and see the plain fact that said criminal is the one harming the name of the religon by his own declaration.
Conversly, anyone who would think that he represents all Christians would evidently be an idiot.
But anyway, I've beat this horse to death.
