Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 4th wk of Jan - with Woody Allen, Troy Donahue, 3D boobies, Hulk, Trailers, Mary Poppins, Groundhog!

Published at:  Jan 28, 2009 7:06:52 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with the latest DVD Column. There’s some very fun titles this week and I’m working to get next week’s up before Saturday, as I’ll be leaving for Berlin for a few days next week and would like to have this go up before I leave. Anyway here ya go… as usual the titles and art are linkable to their corresponding pages on Amazon, where you can learn more on the titles or purchase them, where a portion will go to support this column. Now, let’s hop to it…

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 (aka Father Geek’s 64th Birthday!)

VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA

One of the best films of 2008, directed by Woody Allen and an entirely involving and adult feature about the creative spirit, muses, sexual exploration, the madness of passion and the fury of love. The film is set in Barcelona, one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world… AND it features Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall and Penelope Cruz all looking like the hottest in heat ladies you’ve ever seen. And if you ever need to see what THE SCARY GIRLFRIEND LOOKS LIKE – check out Cruz here. RUN! Another great film from Woody Allen.

THE BOURNE TRILOGY (Blu Ray)

I have the trilogy on HD DVD, but got sent this just a few days ago. The extras are really solid here with a commentary by Doug Liman and two by Paul GreenGrass. In addition there’s stuff from Ludlum, Tony Gilroy and docs galore. These three films kick a lot of ass. And look great on Blu-Ray – just like they looked great on HD-DVD. If you have an internet enabled player, you can record your own Video Commentary which can be shared with folks… because that’s what you want to do. Create your own MST3K version of these films… right?

Warner Bros. Romance Classics Collection ( PALM SPRINGS WEEKEND, PARRISH, ROME ADVENTURE, SUSAN SLADE )

These aren’t a set of my favorite romance flicks, but they’re extremely popular films from the Sixties and these films are an idealized version of love in the early pre-Vietnam sixties. Troy Donahue, Connie Stevens, Claudette Colbert, Karl Malden, Angie Dickinson, Suzanne Pleshette, and more. They’re all romantic tales featuring Troy Donahue. So… Grab a dinner tray and your loved one… syrupy romance is coming to a player near you… and it doesn’t get much sweeter.

PRIDE AND GLORY

I’m not sure if I like this film. It just really makes cops out to be the scurviest lot on the planet earth, but the story is solid once you get past that… the acting is good, but to me… to me, the thing that makes this film amazing is a single moment of Colin Farrell with an Iron in one hand and a baby in the other. It made me laugh and giggle and scream, “HOLY FUCK” here at the house and … ya know, that was worth the viewing experience all on its own.

THE INVADERS-SECOND SEASON

If you liked X-FILES, you’d LOVE THIS! THE INVADERS is that alien conspiracy ramped up to “holy shit, what is going on,” levels. It’s great. Roy Thinnes as our lead, who has been on a run ever since the very first episode of Season 1 – is great. He knows the secret conspiracy that’s got a stranglehold on the future of humanity, but the Aliens know… and they’re everywhere. Who do you tell? How do you fight them if they look like us and are everywhere? Imagine the most straight forward version of THEY LIVE, that’s told stylistically and with a longer sense of dread. FANTASTIC SERIES. Absolutely top notch!

HULK VS.

This is the first of the produced Lionsgate Animated films that didn’t get sent to me early? What does that mean? Nothing, just a snafu somewhere in the processing side of things. I’m really curious about this, you see… Most of these Animated films have been really solid. Perhaps not animated at the level that I wish they’d be, but they’ve all been fun. Even if they looked like they sucked. This is likely one of the last times we’ll see the Hulk till an Avengers feature, and I’m a Hulk fan. Definitely going to pick it up.

GOODBYE MR CHIPS

Peter O’Toole takes on the role that won Robert Donat an Oscar back in 1939, in a much better film. I like this one, but I love the Donat one. The musical nature of this film just kinda rubs me wrong. The film has some fans that really really love it. To me, it’s another remake that’s adequate, but doesn’t do it right.

MARY POPPINS (45th Anniversary Edition)

Great great Disney film, BUUUUUT – frankly I prefer the 40th Anniversary Edition which had, in my opinion, superior extras. Besides – at this stage, I’d wait for the Blu Ray, though you may have to wait till 2014.

ROCKNROLLA

Guy Ritchie back in top form for this flick. We’d lost Guy for a bit, but ROCKNROLLA was a thundering return to form for him. I love this flick. Gerard Butler is hilarious here, and the film has a great vibe to it. It is a shame it never got the big release that I wish it achieved over here, as I’m still waiting on Guy to really break into the U.S. pop consciousness as something other than… tabloid fodder. He’s talented. And we’ll see Guy break out big with his SHERLOCK HOLMES. Here you get a commentary, an additional scene and a pair of docs on the film and this style of film from Guy. Nicely done!

GROUNDHOG DAY (Blu Ray)

A New York Times film critic named GROUNDHOG DAY to his top ten films of all-time. Now, I love this film, but I don’t think in a million years I could go there. My current Facebook profile shot is me with Bill Murray on the edge of a cave at the post-premiere party for CITY OF EMBER – and while we sat there for 35-40 minutes chatting… I couldn’t allow myself to think of this film or GHOSTBUSTERS or CADDYSHACK or STRIPES or the Wes Anderson films… I couldn’t because Bill Murray is just perfect in these films – and GROUNDHOG DAY is truly great. I love the idea of reliving one day repeatedly until you get it right. And I love that we never ever explore WHY this happening or how this is being explained. In an odd way, the movie reminds me of a tender and loving DUCK AMUCK. The world is taunting him. And I love that his reaction to living a new day isn’t… “Let’s get out of here,” but “Let’s live here!” Just a perfect film. The transfer is beautiful, to be honest I didn’t check out the extras. But here, the movie is enough!

CANNERY ROW

I have the weirdest reaction to Debra Winger in this movie. I don’t know why, it’s a completely different character for her, but I just keep waiting for Richard Gere in his whites to carry her off. This isn’t a very good film, the director was a total hack – but the film is watchable solely for the work that Nick Nolte and Debra Winger turn in. They work for me. Not much else does.

WATERLOO BRIDGE

Ok – so I know you’re excited to see Vivien Leigh… and your Grandmother is all about Robert Taylor, but me? When I see Maria Ouspenskaya’s name I light up like Christmas morning. She played the old gypsy lady in THE WOLF MAN, and she’s one of my favorite character performers ever – and I’ve only ever seen a handful of them. She’s great here under Mervyn LeRoy’s great direction. The photography is so beautiful in this film that you’ll want to touch Vivien’s cheek. She’s stunning in this film. This is one of those impossibly heartbreaking romances that makes you want to love and terrified of love… ALL AT ONCE. This is classic hardcore tragic love, the sort that just makes you ache and pine for love. A truly great classic gem from LeRoy!

ZODIAC (Blu Ray)

When ZODIAC hit DVD – Paramount was just at the beginning of the transfer from HD DVD to Blu, so they stalled the release of ZODIAC in high def, till they got their Blu Ray maching rolling – and it’s worth the wait. This is a film for police and journalist procedural nuts. I’m pretty sure that no film set around the killings of a serial killer has ever been done with level of passionate attention to detail. That caused some to disconnect, but for me… I marveled at the filmmaking and the details. I like how this is a police film for a while, but then it becomes the passion of an amateur obsessive compulsive novice. This Blu Ray looks amazing – and ya know what? I’m dying to see the rest of Fincher’s work hit on Blu.

THE ALL NEW SUPERFRIENDS HOUR

Wonder Twin Powers Activate! Yeahhhhh… I’m a deeply passionate lover of the SUPER FRIENDS. These were MY cartoons when the Saturday Morning block was the reason to do good in school, the reason to wake up early… and the reason to be a kid. I didn’t know that was supposed to hate the Wonder Twins and their Space Monkey. I’m told I’m supposed to, but I love them dearly.

The Sidney Poitier Collection ( EDGE OF THE CITY, SOMETHING OF VALUE, A PATCH OF BLUE, A WARM DECEMBER )

My favorite of the set is EDGE OF THE CITY – a great film about a pair of Big Apple longshoremen and is absolutely brutal. Poitier and John Cassavettes play best friends. Jack Warden is amazing in the film. Now the film, SOMETHING OF VALUE with Rock Hudson and Poitier in a Kenyan Independence film where friends fight friends. Really good film. The most loved of the films is PATCH OF BLUE, where Poitier befriends a blind girl and has to deal with one helluva mom played by Shelly Winters. Great film and considered one of Sidney’s best. I haven’t seen A WARM DECEMBER, which is directed by Poitier himself – I’m curious to get to that film. Good job from Warners to put this set together at last!

IN BRUGES (Blu Ray)

FUCKING GREAT FILM! GET IT!

DEAD & BURIED (Blu Ray)

I’ve always had a soft spot for this absolutely creepy as hell movie. Here you have an early eighties genre film… co-written by Dan O’Bannon, make-up effects by Stan Winston and starring a very young Robert Englund. Not only that… but the movie is fucking great! I love messed up towns. I think it is because I’m a Lovecraft and Stephen King fan, but DEAD & BURIED actually is different from both of those writers… this is a wholly original horror film that Blue Underground has done a great job with here. 3 Commentaries, separate features on Stan Winston, Robert Englund and Dan O’Bannon. This is a jewel worth picking up!

M.A.N.T.I.S.: Complete Series

Ah… M.A.N.T.I.S. I am very fond of this show that was produced by Raimi. It was one of the TV shows I was in love with in the earliest days of this site, and here they all are! Good job!

ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED

Think you have Polanski convicted in your mind? Here’s the facts and the reality. An incredibly compelling documentary on one of the great directors, who the press and courts fucked. Great documentary!

DOWNFALL (Blu Ray)

The very best Hitler movie yet, with a stunning performance from Bruno Ganz as Adolph. This import Blu-Ray is All Region, so it will play on your player as far as I can tell. Plays on mine. A truly great film.

THE STEWARDESSES 3D

3D softcore porn from a year that screamed for 3D porn… ’69! I’ve seen this theatrically – and it seems to now have an R rating. Oh how the times have changed. It’s a fun bit of titillation… in 3D! Shitty 3D, but it is comin’ atcha!

SHARKS IN VENICE

This has to be worth a six pack and your time!

FANTASTIC FLESH: THE ART OF MAKE-UP EFX

This is one of those produced STARZ documentaries. They interviewed Quentin Tarantino, George Romero, Josh Brolin, Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, John Carpenter, Simon Pegg, Eli Roth, Rob Bottin, Robert Rodriguez, Tom Savini, Wes Craven, John Landis, Mick Garris and Dick Smith… and they’ve got tons of footage of more modern make-up effects. It’s a solid doc, though I wish it was actually feature length, but alas it is just under an hour.

FEMALE PRISONER: CAGED!

This is really weird and tough stuff. This isn’t great, but if you’re a fan of the eighties Nikkatsu Erotic cinema, it’s right up your alley.

STARBALLZ

Yeah… this is that famous Hentai parody of a certain film that you probably can guess. It’s pretty hilarious. And George knows how long this will be available as legal papers have been served on this title before. It is hardcore and not something for the kiddies. It’s also very geeky.

Next week we’ll be getting into YENTL, Volume XIV of MST3K, ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO, SPACE BUDDIES, MADAGASCAR 2, FRIDAY THE 13th Blu Ray, FRIDAY THE 13th part 2 & part 3 in 3D, NICK & NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST, HIS NAME WAS JASON, HOUNDDOG, OUR MAN IN HAVANA, OFFICE SPACE (Blu Ray), Natalie Wood Collection, OLIVER AND COMPANY, VIBES, BEING THERE (Blu Ray), SIDEWAYS (Blu Ray), TCM Romantic Comedies Collection, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (Blu), CLERKS 2 (Blu), INSIDE MOVES, SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL, GUMSHOE, FIVE, XANADU, PAURA, BRAINSTORM, THE WIZ and more…

Hulk Vs.is definitely the best of Marvel's animated films

    by cannabis holocaust

I can only hope Fox's Wolverine will turn out halfway decent as Hulk vs. Wolverine. The Thor segment wasn't too bad either. And I don't even care for Marvel's other animated features. Well, Dr. Strange was alright.

Harry, any chance of donating some or all the movies you screen for these reviews to the visitors of the site. You know the ones who make it all possible? Maybe the ones who have cool talkback names based on David Cross characters from failed HBO series?

Sharks in Venis director has a thing for sharks

    by jccalhoun

Curious about the film I imdb'ed it. Unfortunately, it is a new film starring Stephen Baldwin...However, I clicked on the director's name and, in addition to producing a lot of stuff, he has also directed 3 shark-themed movies in the last 5 years! Either he's reusing footage, actually owns the robotic shark, or he has a thing for sharks.

Vicky Christina Barcelona - one of the worst movies of the year

    by bingo the clown

The characters were all either shallow or idiots, the narration was intrusive and shows Woody doesn't trust the audience to understand what's going on, and Scarlett Johansson plays the only libertine who has sex with her clothes on. On the other hand, In Bruges rocks, and is easily one of the best films of the year. It's everything that VCB isn't.

yeah, i'm a little skeptical when critics say Vicki Cristina is one of the best of the year. I can't stand listening to Penelope Cruz speak. She's hot, but her voice is really annoying.

Damn, I wish I had Blu-Ray for Zodiac and In Bruges, 2 of my favorite movies of the last couple of years. The cover art of In Bruges is cool, different from standard DVD.

    Sharks in Venice

    by humfredo

I own this (but the UK version without the cool cover). It is truely awful, in a kind of good way but certainly not to the level of "so bad it's good" . Stephen Baldwin and Scarlett Johansson's sister cannot act to save their lives, bless them. The sets are used again and again. But the best thing of all is realising that with the exception of the B-roll footage, some well placed second unit shots and some creative green screen, you never ever see any of the main characters in Venice. Genius.

    by techlord

Yeah, he got a bad rap. Drugged a 13 year old girl and ass raped her. Those are the facts. Everything else is just filler. Say what you want about the courts and prosecutors, but the FACT is he broke the law and fled. Before you try to make the guy out to be a saint, try to imagine that it was your daughter he raped. Would you then still be willing to say "Well, he's a good director, so it's ok that he raped a little girl".

Harry, maybe that gastric bypass has taken too much blood from your brain. Did you see the same documentary I saw? Polanski had non-consensual sex with a fucking 14 year old girl. He can make all the "Pianist" he wants he is still a fucking kiddie raper. Yes, his victim has forgiven him and does not want to press the charges anymore but that does not mean America should throw open the doors to Hollywood and welcome Roman Polanski back. He fucking raped a little girl in the Joker's crib and he should do his time for it. Fuck that Frog let him stay in his own country a country that obviously protects pedophiles.

    by subliminaljones

Caught it on Sci Fi channel a few weeks ago. It's one of those Nu Image Studios abominations shot in Bulgaria. Even a cheese connesuir such as I couldn't get past the scenes of Baldwin and other scuba diving underwater wearing in-mouth breathing apparatus, and yet the viewer hears them speaking plainly as though they were wearing fullface diving masks ala The Abyss. The filmmakers don't even attempt to hide the sheer idiocy of it with cutaways.

    by jabroni

Excuse me, but since when do we forgive someone who drugs a 13 year old girl and preceeds to rape her? Because he made one or 2 good movies. That's bullshit. There is not a single person on this board that would find this exceptable if this happend to their daughter. This guy deserves nothing and should not be entitled to anything after what he's done. It's unforgivable. Hollywood loves to give a pass to wrong behavior, just because they are an auteur. I call bullshit and hope he never gets back here.

    ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED

    by the funketeer

Seriously Harry, that's the basis for your defense of Polanski? Work some Google magic on that film and you'll find that the director had to make cuts on more than one occasion AFTER the movie was released because the people she quoted in the film denied saying the things she attributed to them. Even if there was misconduct in the case, that doesn't mean that Polanski didn't do the things he did. The man is a rapist and he deserves to rot in prison or, at the very least, serve the short sentence he was going to be given. I've seen the "documentary" which clearly is looking to make a case for Polanski and doesn't do a very good job of it. You should be ashamed.

    by bobparr

He is technically a fugitive from justice in the USA. The main reason why Clinton caught so much hell from the Mark Rich pardon was that he was a fugitive and basically gave the USA judicial system the big middle finger. That is what Polanski did as well
But of course, the left wing, sheltered, hippie, man-child Knowles would rather assume that Polanski is the good guy and the big bad USA is the villain.

    Polanski: The Facts

    by stabby

Polanski approached the Girl and her Mother and asked if he could take photos of the Girl. The Mother agreed thinking that he was a famous director and it might lead to her daughter breaking into the industry. Polanski took pictures of the Girl and took her to Jack's crib. He then gave the Girl valium and alcohol. He started to put the moves on her and she said no. He persisted anyway and anally raped her. More of a date rape then a straight rape, but still rape. Polanski later plead guilty to statutory rape admitting that he did have sex with the 13 year old. He then fled the country to France before he could be sentenced instead of serving the time he deserved. He was going to get off easy too, but apparently he was willing to do the crime, but not the time. The man is a criminal and a fugitive. I doesn't matter if the Girl wants the case dropped. It doesn't matter if there was shenanigans on the part of the prosecutor and judge. Polanski plea guilty to the crime he should do the time.

    by rbatty024

Do you mean Stanley Fish who put Groundhog's Day in his top ten American films of all time (almost certainly to garner attention and create controversy)? Because if you do, then you mean an incredibly popular literary critic whose work on rhetoric in Paradise Lost is a touchstone of that poem and whose essay "Is There a Text in This Class?" is not only required reading for anyone who goes to college for more than two years, but also spawned the school of reader response criticism. Because if that's who you mean, Stanley Fish, then he's not a film critic.

I just find it interesting that R. Kelly got totally off while Polanski is still banned. That's the legal system's fault, but I don't see anyone up in arms about Mr. Kelly's freedom to pee on the youngsters.

So, was Polanski actually convicted in absentia?

    by soylentmean

If so, then that would technically make him a convicted rapist, making him a rapist. Whether or not he actually did rape the girl is beside the point. Unless you actually come to court and prove your case that in no uncertain terms did you rape the victim, then you are a criminal.

Of course the very idea of sex with a thirteen year old girl is repugnant and repulsive to the extreme. There is no fuckin' way there's any rational or acceptable situation where that could even remotely be considered tolerable behavior.

And I like the guy's movies.

However, if he's never been convicted than nobody has the right to outright condemn the guy. There's some kind of innocent until proven guilty type thing in our legal system.

    by obsd

There's absolutely no denying that it's reeeeeealy fucked up to rape a 13 year old girl. That takes a special kind of douchebaggery. I's also fucked up (although not even remotely as much, obviously)for a judge to reneg on a plea bargain and give a guy 50 years for a crime he pleaded (pled? I don't know what the past tense is, honestly) guilty on. If it were me and I had Polanski's money and I got a call from the prosecutor saying the judge was going to give me 50 years, I'd flee the country too. Although if it was me, I would not have drugged and raped a 13 year old girl, so there is that. Now can we drop this shit and talk about 3-D titties? Honestly, that's what I really care about from this article and that's all this talkback would be about if Harry hadn't had dropped the "Polanski-bomb". The guy raped a girl and ran away and he still makes movies. Sure, it's all kinds of fucked up but unless you're a bounty hunter, it really shouldn't affect your life. At all. But every time his name is mentioned on AICN, you guys go apeshit. It's not like he's the only famous person to get away with a crime. Now let's talk about shit that really matters. 3-D titties!

there is another well paid person. who did exactly the same thing. Jonathon Ross. It was not reported around the time of the Ross-brandgate business. Ross has a book out called Why do I say these things. In that he says that when he was dating his wife. she was 16 at the time. dating a minor is against the law. to get around that He and jane goldman waited untill she was 18 before they got married. If that had been discovered at the height of the Ross-brandgate affair. His career would have been finished. all these talkbackers stoning Roman Polanski. should also remember that Jerry Lee Lewis married his cousin who was 13. I dont remember hearing anyone calling for Jerry Lee lewis arrest. but maybe they did. back then.

Bid difference in the Ross case: he didn't drug and rape her. They dated and then got married. There are still states in the US where 16 year olds can have consensual sex. Florida is one of them. I met my wife when she was 16 and I was 19. We've been married 17 years now and I didn't even have to drug and ass rape her.

Take a closer look at the box art of that Polanski documentary... the old perv's clearly having a little fiddle! But on a more serious note I don't think what Harry wrote is apologising for or devaluing Polanski's crime (unlike a couple of talkbackers here who ought to be ashamed of themselves). Bourne is one of the most solid film triologies of all time

    by i am_notreal

All three films are really well put-together, nicely acted, good action, good twists...there just aren't a lot of holes. Yet I just don't feel as strongly about them as I do, say, the 1st 3 Die Hards. Don't know why. Maybe it's because we never really get to know Jason Bourne, but John McClane feels real, even when he's tying a firehose to his waist and jumping off of a skyscraper.

Good stuff there dannyglover, it is kind of boggling there is even DEBATE going on about it was this or that, she was a ho, his wife mutliated, can ya blame the guy type of stuff, clearly than anyone who's had someone they know killed by serial killers is allowed to go fucking kids? I'm pretty sure Poles had it tough in WW2, 13% of their population wiped out even, but you dont see others raping kids for their woes. And so what if he makes good movies, there are no free passes, the judge doesnt go "well he made Rosemary's Baby and Chinatonw, i hereby deem him innocent!" I'm sure he's fucking in the head from his shitty past but he fucked up and made a mistake, should of done his time and go some therapy to help his mindset afterward, not bail out. Also that "courts fucked Polanski" statement by Knowles is truly mindboggling, talk about living in another stratosphere, but then again his wife is just 4 years legal herself so his opinion is PROBABLY not the one to go to on the pedrapist debate.

Those movies are the most boring things ever, there's no plot and they always cocktease you about the clues and anticipation of who he is, and in the end, the big REVEAL is.... another dude who GASP rebelled against the company cuz he didnt like killing. What a fucking idiot. What a boring snooze inducing trilogy ending. Mannequin Damon is a joyless twat to watch, bereft of any character. Fuck realism in spy movies also, all the badguys look like douchebags and the evil badguy is old dude with glasses with name tag who looks slightly sinister with careful shadows. IDIOTS. I'll take the Bond movies any day. Although the last Bond movie stunk like shit as well, it was Bourne 4 basically.
