Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 4th wk of Jan - with Woody Allen, Troy Donahue, 3D boobies, Hulk, Trailers, Mary Poppins, Groundhog!
Hey folks, Harry here with the latest DVD Column. There’s some very fun titles this week and I’m working to get next week’s up before Saturday, as I’ll be leaving for Berlin for a few days next week and would like to have this go up before I leave. Anyway here ya go… as usual the titles and art are linkable to their corresponding pages on Amazon, where you can learn more on the titles or purchase them, where a portion will go to support this column. Now, let’s hop to it…
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 (aka Father Geek’s 64th Birthday!)

VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA
One of the best films of 2008, directed by Woody Allen and an entirely involving and adult feature about the creative spirit, muses, sexual exploration, the madness of passion and the fury of love. The film is set in Barcelona, one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the world… AND it features Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall and Penelope Cruz all looking like the hottest in heat ladies you’ve ever seen. And if you ever need to see what THE SCARY GIRLFRIEND LOOKS LIKE – check out Cruz here. RUN! Another great film from Woody Allen.

THE BOURNE TRILOGY (Blu Ray)
I have the trilogy on HD DVD, but got sent this just a few days ago. The extras are really solid here with a commentary by Doug Liman and two by Paul GreenGrass. In addition there’s stuff from Ludlum, Tony Gilroy and docs galore. These three films kick a lot of ass. And look great on Blu-Ray – just like they looked great on HD-DVD. If you have an internet enabled player, you can record your own Video Commentary which can be shared with folks… because that’s what you want to do. Create your own MST3K version of these films… right?

Warner Bros. Romance Classics Collection ( PALM SPRINGS WEEKEND, PARRISH, ROME ADVENTURE, SUSAN SLADE )
These aren’t a set of my favorite romance flicks, but they’re extremely popular films from the Sixties and these films are an idealized version of love in the early pre-Vietnam sixties. Troy Donahue, Connie Stevens, Claudette Colbert, Karl Malden, Angie Dickinson, Suzanne Pleshette, and more. They’re all romantic tales featuring Troy Donahue. So… Grab a dinner tray and your loved one… syrupy romance is coming to a player near you… and it doesn’t get much sweeter.

PRIDE AND GLORY
I’m not sure if I like this film. It just really makes cops out to be the scurviest lot on the planet earth, but the story is solid once you get past that… the acting is good, but to me… to me, the thing that makes this film amazing is a single moment of Colin Farrell with an Iron in one hand and a baby in the other. It made me laugh and giggle and scream, “HOLY FUCK” here at the house and … ya know, that was worth the viewing experience all on its own.

THE INVADERS-SECOND SEASON
If you liked X-FILES, you’d LOVE THIS! THE INVADERS is that alien conspiracy ramped up to “holy shit, what is going on,” levels. It’s great. Roy Thinnes as our lead, who has been on a run ever since the very first episode of Season 1 – is great. He knows the secret conspiracy that’s got a stranglehold on the future of humanity, but the Aliens know… and they’re everywhere. Who do you tell? How do you fight them if they look like us and are everywhere? Imagine the most straight forward version of THEY LIVE, that’s told stylistically and with a longer sense of dread. FANTASTIC SERIES. Absolutely top notch!

HULK VS.
This is the first of the produced Lionsgate Animated films that didn’t get sent to me early? What does that mean? Nothing, just a snafu somewhere in the processing side of things. I’m really curious about this, you see… Most of these Animated films have been really solid. Perhaps not animated at the level that I wish they’d be, but they’ve all been fun. Even if they looked like they sucked. This is likely one of the last times we’ll see the Hulk till an Avengers feature, and I’m a Hulk fan. Definitely going to pick it up.

GOODBYE MR CHIPS
Peter O’Toole takes on the role that won Robert Donat an Oscar back in 1939, in a much better film. I like this one, but I love the Donat one. The musical nature of this film just kinda rubs me wrong. The film has some fans that really really love it. To me, it’s another remake that’s adequate, but doesn’t do it right.

MARY POPPINS (45th Anniversary Edition)
Great great Disney film, BUUUUUT – frankly I prefer the 40th Anniversary Edition which had, in my opinion, superior extras. Besides – at this stage, I’d wait for the Blu Ray, though you may have to wait till 2014.

ROCKNROLLA
Guy Ritchie back in top form for this flick. We’d lost Guy for a bit, but ROCKNROLLA was a thundering return to form for him. I love this flick. Gerard Butler is hilarious here, and the film has a great vibe to it. It is a shame it never got the big release that I wish it achieved over here, as I’m still waiting on Guy to really break into the U.S. pop consciousness as something other than… tabloid fodder. He’s talented. And we’ll see Guy break out big with his SHERLOCK HOLMES. Here you get a commentary, an additional scene and a pair of docs on the film and this style of film from Guy. Nicely done!

GROUNDHOG DAY (Blu Ray)
A New York Times film critic named GROUNDHOG DAY to his top ten films of all-time. Now, I love this film, but I don’t think in a million years I could go there. My current Facebook profile shot is me with Bill Murray on the edge of a cave at the post-premiere party for CITY OF EMBER – and while we sat there for 35-40 minutes chatting… I couldn’t allow myself to think of this film or GHOSTBUSTERS or CADDYSHACK or STRIPES or the Wes Anderson films… I couldn’t because Bill Murray is just perfect in these films – and GROUNDHOG DAY is truly great. I love the idea of reliving one day repeatedly until you get it right. And I love that we never ever explore WHY this happening or how this is being explained. In an odd way, the movie reminds me of a tender and loving DUCK AMUCK. The world is taunting him. And I love that his reaction to living a new day isn’t… “Let’s get out of here,” but “Let’s live here!” Just a perfect film. The transfer is beautiful, to be honest I didn’t check out the extras. But here, the movie is enough!

CANNERY ROW
I have the weirdest reaction to Debra Winger in this movie. I don’t know why, it’s a completely different character for her, but I just keep waiting for Richard Gere in his whites to carry her off. This isn’t a very good film, the director was a total hack – but the film is watchable solely for the work that Nick Nolte and Debra Winger turn in. They work for me. Not much else does.

WATERLOO BRIDGE
Ok – so I know you’re excited to see Vivien Leigh… and your Grandmother is all about Robert Taylor, but me? When I see Maria Ouspenskaya’s name I light up like Christmas morning. She played the old gypsy lady in THE WOLF MAN, and she’s one of my favorite character performers ever – and I’ve only ever seen a handful of them. She’s great here under Mervyn LeRoy’s great direction. The photography is so beautiful in this film that you’ll want to touch Vivien’s cheek. She’s stunning in this film. This is one of those impossibly heartbreaking romances that makes you want to love and terrified of love… ALL AT ONCE. This is classic hardcore tragic love, the sort that just makes you ache and pine for love. A truly great classic gem from LeRoy!

ZODIAC (Blu Ray)
When ZODIAC hit DVD – Paramount was just at the beginning of the transfer from HD DVD to Blu, so they stalled the release of ZODIAC in high def, till they got their Blu Ray maching rolling – and it’s worth the wait. This is a film for police and journalist procedural nuts. I’m pretty sure that no film set around the killings of a serial killer has ever been done with level of passionate attention to detail. That caused some to disconnect, but for me… I marveled at the filmmaking and the details. I like how this is a police film for a while, but then it becomes the passion of an amateur obsessive compulsive novice. This Blu Ray looks amazing – and ya know what? I’m dying to see the rest of Fincher’s work hit on Blu.

THE ALL NEW SUPERFRIENDS HOUR
Wonder Twin Powers Activate! Yeahhhhh… I’m a deeply passionate lover of the SUPER FRIENDS. These were MY cartoons when the Saturday Morning block was the reason to do good in school, the reason to wake up early… and the reason to be a kid. I didn’t know that was supposed to hate the Wonder Twins and their Space Monkey. I’m told I’m supposed to, but I love them dearly.

The Sidney Poitier Collection ( EDGE OF THE CITY, SOMETHING OF VALUE, A PATCH OF BLUE, A WARM DECEMBER )
My favorite of the set is EDGE OF THE CITY – a great film about a pair of Big Apple longshoremen and is absolutely brutal. Poitier and John Cassavettes play best friends. Jack Warden is amazing in the film. Now the film, SOMETHING OF VALUE with Rock Hudson and Poitier in a Kenyan Independence film where friends fight friends. Really good film. The most loved of the films is PATCH OF BLUE, where Poitier befriends a blind girl and has to deal with one helluva mom played by Shelly Winters. Great film and considered one of Sidney’s best. I haven’t seen A WARM DECEMBER, which is directed by Poitier himself – I’m curious to get to that film. Good job from Warners to put this set together at last!

IN BRUGES (Blu Ray)
FUCKING GREAT FILM! GET IT!

DEAD & BURIED (Blu Ray)
I’ve always had a soft spot for this absolutely creepy as hell movie. Here you have an early eighties genre film… co-written by Dan O’Bannon, make-up effects by Stan Winston and starring a very young Robert Englund. Not only that… but the movie is fucking great! I love messed up towns. I think it is because I’m a Lovecraft and Stephen King fan, but DEAD & BURIED actually is different from both of those writers… this is a wholly original horror film that Blue Underground has done a great job with here. 3 Commentaries, separate features on Stan Winston, Robert Englund and Dan O’Bannon. This is a jewel worth picking up!

M.A.N.T.I.S.: Complete Series
Ah… M.A.N.T.I.S. I am very fond of this show that was produced by Raimi. It was one of the TV shows I was in love with in the earliest days of this site, and here they all are! Good job!

ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED
Think you have Polanski convicted in your mind? Here’s the facts and the reality. An incredibly compelling documentary on one of the great directors, who the press and courts fucked. Great documentary!

DOWNFALL (Blu Ray)
The very best Hitler movie yet, with a stunning performance from Bruno Ganz as Adolph. This import Blu-Ray is All Region, so it will play on your player as far as I can tell. Plays on mine. A truly great film.

THE STEWARDESSES 3D
3D softcore porn from a year that screamed for 3D porn… ’69! I’ve seen this theatrically – and it seems to now have an R rating. Oh how the times have changed. It’s a fun bit of titillation… in 3D! Shitty 3D, but it is comin’ atcha!

SHARKS IN VENICE
This has to be worth a six pack and your time!

FANTASTIC FLESH: THE ART OF MAKE-UP EFX
This is one of those produced STARZ documentaries. They interviewed Quentin Tarantino, George Romero, Josh Brolin, Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, John Carpenter, Simon Pegg, Eli Roth, Rob Bottin, Robert Rodriguez, Tom Savini, Wes Craven, John Landis, Mick Garris and Dick Smith… and they’ve got tons of footage of more modern make-up effects. It’s a solid doc, though I wish it was actually feature length, but alas it is just under an hour.

FEMALE PRISONER: CAGED!
This is really weird and tough stuff. This isn’t great, but if you’re a fan of the eighties Nikkatsu Erotic cinema, it’s right up your alley.

STARBALLZ
Yeah… this is that famous Hentai parody of a certain film that you probably can guess. It’s pretty hilarious. And George knows how long this will be available as legal papers have been served on this title before. It is hardcore and not something for the kiddies. It’s also very geeky.
Next week we’ll be getting into YENTL, Volume XIV of MST3K, ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO, SPACE BUDDIES, MADAGASCAR 2, FRIDAY THE 13th Blu Ray, FRIDAY THE 13th part 2 & part 3 in 3D, NICK & NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST, HIS NAME WAS JASON, HOUNDDOG, OUR MAN IN HAVANA, OFFICE SPACE (Blu Ray), Natalie Wood Collection, OLIVER AND COMPANY, VIBES, BEING THERE (Blu Ray), SIDEWAYS (Blu Ray), TCM Romantic Comedies Collection, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (Blu), CLERKS 2 (Blu), INSIDE MOVES, SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL, GUMSHOE, FIVE, XANADU, PAURA, BRAINSTORM, THE WIZ and more…

Hulk Vs.is definitely the best of Marvel's animated films
by cannabis holocaust
I can only hope Fox's Wolverine will turn out halfway decent as Hulk vs. Wolverine. The Thor segment wasn't too bad either. And I don't even care for Marvel's other animated features. Well, Dr. Strange was alright.
-
But yes, it is indeed a Fucking Great Film. And way to start a shitstorm with that Polanski thing, Harry.
PS. The SHARKS IN VENICE cover is fucking awesome. -
Bit of a weak one

This turns into a Polanski talkback in 3-2-1....
by shut the fuck up donny
-
you know the rest.
-
I remember liking Cannery Row as a kid. Gave me a warm, Radio Days like feeling. It's no good???
-
I love your DVD picks columns, Harry.
Not only do you highlight stuff I may never have known was available, but sometimes greatness is revealed, like that fucking awesome "Sharks in Venice" cover.
I need that movie just for the cover. -
I wish I had access to these films for free too Harry. But alas, I am a 'financially embarrassed' teacher. Harry, any chance of donating some or all the movies you screen for these reviews to the visitors of the site. You know the ones who make it all possible? Maybe the ones who have cool talkback names based on David Cross characters from failed HBO series?
-
must really hate Bill Murray. his face looks TERRIBLE.
-
is one of the worst DVD covers I've seen in ages. To me, it is a tough title though - what's THE ICONIC image of the film? The Clock Radio? Which version of Bill? At the Piano? My favorite image of the film is the Snow Face he sculpts - its magical.
-
it was actually released on HD-DVD, i've got it, it looks great
-
when they make Bill Murray look like someone else entirely, and when Andie MacDowell doesn't make you want to jerk it to her image
-
That looks like a great flick to watch with a bunch of friends to just sit there and laugh at.
-
Curious about the film I imdb'ed it. Unfortunately, it is a new film starring Stephen Baldwin...However, I clicked on the director's name and, in addition to producing a lot of stuff, he has also directed 3 shark-themed movies in the last 5 years! Either he's reusing footage, actually owns the robotic shark, or he has a thing for sharks.
-
Got a light, pilgrim?
-
In fockin' Bruges was my favourite film of 2008. Fuck off, Batman.
-
I have it, and it is a great release. Looks great and has great extra features.
Also, Amazon lists In Bruges on Blu-Ray as a PAL release. Don't see anything for the NTSC release yet. -

Vicky Christina Barcelona - one of the worst movies of the year
by bingo the clown
The characters were all either shallow or idiots, the narration was intrusive and shows Woody doesn't trust the audience to understand what's going on, and Scarlett Johansson plays the only libertine who has sex with her clothes on. On the other hand, In Bruges rocks, and is easily one of the best films of the year. It's everything that VCB isn't.
-
yeah, i'm a little skeptical when critics say Vicki Cristina is one of the best of the year. I can't stand listening to Penelope Cruz speak. She's hot, but her voice is really annoying.
Damn, I wish I had Blu-Ray for Zodiac and In Bruges, 2 of my favorite movies of the last couple of years. The cover art of In Bruges is cool, different from standard DVD.
Looking forward to seeing Pride & Glory. -
Standard edition, director's cut, and now director's cut Blu-Ray. Annoying, but I think it's worth it. Great, great, great film.
-
...was reissued this week, as well. Interesting film, great animation, songs from the legendary Sherman Bros. An utter failure at the box-office. The new DVD is dirt cheap and worth checking out.
-
Damn, I want that movie just for the fucking cover.
-
I love the pose of the gondolier - he does not have any sort of reaction of fear. His posture seems simply to suggest the one and only thought going through his mind: "I'm fucked"
-
The exactly same movie, but just made today. Audiences all over the world would hate it and complain why we never get an explaination. Today's audiences are fucking morons. (I blame Tarantino.)
-
..Which is a smaller but infinitely BETTER film!! Starring Curtwood Smith, and seemingly only available on DVD in England.
(There was also a craptastic remake of the original short expanded to two hours for American TV starring Jonathan Silverman and Helen Slater!! Yow!!) -
I own this (but the UK version without the cool cover). It is truely awful, in a kind of good way but certainly not to the level of "so bad it's good" . Stephen Baldwin and Scarlett Johansson's sister cannot act to save their lives, bless them. The sets are used again and again. But the best thing of all is realising that with the exception of the B-roll footage, some well placed second unit shots and some creative green screen, you never ever see any of the main characters in Venice. Genius.
-
Sorry, I don't have eighty dollars to spend on just three movies.
-
Yeah, he got a bad rap. Drugged a 13 year old girl and ass raped her. Those are the facts. Everything else is just filler. Say what you want about the courts and prosecutors, but the FACT is he broke the law and fled. Before you try to make the guy out to be a saint, try to imagine that it was your daughter he raped. Would you then still be willing to say "Well, he's a good director, so it's ok that he raped a little girl".
-
Harry, maybe that gastric bypass has taken too much blood from your brain. Did you see the same documentary I saw? Polanski had non-consensual sex with a fucking 14 year old girl. He can make all the "Pianist" he wants he is still a fucking kiddie raper. Yes, his victim has forgiven him and does not want to press the charges anymore but that does not mean America should throw open the doors to Hollywood and welcome Roman Polanski back. He fucking raped a little girl in the Joker's crib and he should do his time for it. Fuck that Frog let him stay in his own country a country that obviously protects pedophiles.
-
is a brilliant film...I have Blue Underground's 2 disc DVD release from a few years back...which had some pretty good features...
Harry, wondering if you've seen that version and how much more new stuff has been added for the features...the hospital room eyeball gag is classic...

by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for
Murray driving while the groundhog steers. "Never drive angry!"
-
Caught it on Sci Fi channel a few weeks ago. It's one of those Nu Image Studios abominations shot in Bulgaria. Even a cheese connesuir such as I couldn't get past the scenes of Baldwin and other scuba diving underwater wearing in-mouth breathing apparatus, and yet the viewer hears them speaking plainly as though they were wearing fullface diving masks ala The Abyss. The filmmakers don't even attempt to hide the sheer idiocy of it with cutaways.
-
till you get it right. like me.
-
Not without laughing when I think of the youtube parody where Hitler can't get his videogame system to work.
-
Not only is it a stupid line, it makes one of the best movies of last year seem like a zany, cookie cutter studio comedy.
-
Huh. Who knew? Great book - can't imagine how they would film it...
-
best buy has it for 119 dollars..i mean seriously WTF is that its three movies, even individually 3 blurays wouldn't cost more then 90 bucks, the james bond bluray sets contained 3 films and they were only 70 bucks...
Universal is making me know what it feels like to be rapedoh and by the way i also laugh when watching The downfall because of that "Downfall of HD DVD" video..youtube it if you haven't seen it yet, its one of the funniest things you will ever see, its even funnier if you were a bluray supporter druing the format war (so glad our side won) -
i loved that movie as a kid!
-
and this was not some ordinary 13 year old..this was a 13 going on 30 hollywood party girl who'd fucked before. statutory rape maybe..but it was clearly not "rape" rape.
-
Can we get that as a movie poster and bypass the film?
-
which i felt is a superior film to Zodiac.
-
I hope someone drugs and then ass rapes your 13 year old daughter so I can hear your excuse then. And I hope as punishment, they make him pick up trash on the side of the road for a day so we can all say "Well, he's a good trash picker, so it's ok."
-
I love that. Facts shmacts. The media told me he's evil and i'm believing them 100%, because they never lie just to sell papers. Good job!
-
So, in order for it to be rape rape the girl has to be a virgin? Thanks for clarifying. Lawyers all over the country are currently crafting their appeals.
-
is totally correct.

I got Zodiac DC on BluRay here in Norway three or four months ag
by colonel_blimp
And I think it had been out for a while even then. Hmmm. Good to see you finally got it in the US too. It's great, btw. Also, Vicky Cristina Barcelona is not very good.
-
They got Wolverine right in every aspect. The violence is absolutely batshit insane.
Deadpool though was real funny. I wanna see what happens if he fights Spider-Man.
Didn't care much for Hulk Vs. Thor. It took itself too seriously. -
a documentary about prosthetic effecs using a cover thats clearly cgi.
-
Seriously. Fucked up Hentai is always entertaining. Ever seen Cool Devices? The psychological warfare you'll conduct on yourself trying to justify most (if not all) of the stories in that series is worth the price of admission. Combine that with Star Wars? I am so fucking sold.
-
Excuse me, but since when do we forgive someone who drugs a 13 year old girl and preceeds to rape her? Because he made one or 2 good movies. That's bullshit. There is not a single person on this board that would find this exceptable if this happend to their daughter. This guy deserves nothing and should not be entitled to anything after what he's done. It's unforgivable. Hollywood loves to give a pass to wrong behavior, just because they are an auteur. I call bullshit and hope he never gets back here.
-
I love them. They know how to do cult movies right. Even if the main feature doesn't live up to your imagination, the extras are always terrific. I'll have to check this out. A couple of recent releases were definitely worth seeing - The Warrior, insane fun fantasy/martial arts movie from Indonesia; and Assault: Jack the Ripper, an odd and disturbing but equally great flick from Japan.
-
Appropriate screen name. The media didn't tell me he was evil, I pretty much determined that on my own when he ADMITTED drugging and sodomizing a 13 year old girl. And then fled when he was going to be sentenced for it. I would wish for you to be drugged and sodomized, but you probably pay for that every weekend.
-
It was Roman that did the fucking. He drugged and fucked a 13 year old girl. You can approach the rest of the story any way you life, the fact is-- this happened. He should be dead. Shame on you for defending him.
-
..as much as I like Roman's films, the guy is a scumbag for what he did and should be prosecuted for it. Regardless of how "mature" she was at the time, you dont get a pass for that. If any of us did that we'd be in jail getting our own asses train-raped by every guy in there. Sorry Roman, stay where you are please. Thanks.
-
As well as Rick Baker or Dick Smith... I loved the days of makeup effects celebs...
-
Seriously Harry, that's the basis for your defense of Polanski? Work some Google magic on that film and you'll find that the director had to make cuts on more than one occasion AFTER the movie was released because the people she quoted in the film denied saying the things she attributed to them. Even if there was misconduct in the case, that doesn't mean that Polanski didn't do the things he did. The man is a rapist and he deserves to rot in prison or, at the very least, serve the short sentence he was going to be given. I've seen the "documentary" which clearly is looking to make a case for Polanski and doesn't do a very good job of it. You should be ashamed.
-
like the moment (narrated by John Huston): "After a while, Doc grew tired of driving...."
-
He most certainly did. Look it up. He drugged her. She said no. Doesn't matter how experienced she was. She didn't want to and he did it anyway. That's rape.
-
and "Marked down" from like $50?!
What
The
Fuck
Seriously, what the fuck. -
Five bucks says Polanski gets pardoned or clemency within the next eight years.

Han solo and pricess leia never had sex in the star war
by indyabbey jones
seriously any one who buys star balls, deserves to be rapped by roman polanski...Getting sexually aroused from a cartoon is worse then raping a 13 year old
-
Isnt it just as much the Mothers fault for leaving the two of them alone together, just so her daughter and herself could make it in hollywood. And besides that, the girl is trying to drop the charges so she can move on. SO FUCKING MOVE ON YOU BITCHY LITTLE GIRL
-
TITS ARE TITS, ANIMATED OR NOT
-
As a parent, you should know that whenever you leave your child with an adult, an ass raping is inevitable. Stupid mom.
-
Now that we blamed the girl and her mother, I think we should also hold the 1970s accountable. Things were different back then. The prevailing attitude was that if you didn't ass rape a 13 year old girl when you had the chance, you were a "square".
-
.....the girl was mature, a nympho, fucked 12 other guys the day before, what the fuck does that change? The girl was 13 fucking years old. For you cocksuckers and most of all Harry to make excuses for this shit is inexcusable. And Harry, you should watch out defending the piece of shit-- you already look like a fucking pedophile.
Shame on all of you fucks. So if a mature 10 year old comes onto you and explains she wants to suck you off-- thats perfectly alright? Fuck that. And fuck all of you sick fucks. I pray none of you have children. If you do, they'd be better off in an African orphanage. -
I'll keep buying it.
-
He is technically a fugitive from justice in the USA. The main reason why Clinton caught so much hell from the Mark Rich pardon was that he was a fugitive and basically gave the USA judicial system the big middle finger. That is what Polanski did as well
But of course, the left wing, sheltered, hippie, man-child Knowles would rather assume that Polanski is the good guy and the big bad USA is the villain. -
Leaving a child unsupervised is stupid, sure. But was it the mother doing the fucking ass raping? How is it just as much her fault? Oh right, this is that same frat boy logic that says it was partially the chick's fault for for getting raped because she wore that short skirt. Uh huh.
And the victim may want to move on, sure. I understand that. They should stop all this bullshit-- and they should extradite Roman and put him in a fucking cage for the rest of his life. I have no problem with this story going away, what I do have a problem with is dense motherfuckers still defending this piece of shit. -
Please don't compare Harry's ignorance to left-wing ideology. its an insult to all liberals. We don't stand for condoning child ass rape, only fucking scumbags and blind fanboys would do something so stupid. "But but but but....he made so many good movies!! Isn't that all that matters?!!"
-
I concede your point. This Polanski thing is not a Michael Moore "The system is corrupt" type of argument. It's a Harry Knowles "Chinatown was awesome so let the child rapist go" argument.
-
Polanski approached the Girl and her Mother and asked if he could take photos of the Girl. The Mother agreed thinking that he was a famous director and it might lead to her daughter breaking into the industry. Polanski took pictures of the Girl and took her to Jack's crib. He then gave the Girl valium and alcohol. He started to put the moves on her and she said no. He persisted anyway and anally raped her. More of a date rape then a straight rape, but still rape. Polanski later plead guilty to statutory rape admitting that he did have sex with the 13 year old. He then fled the country to France before he could be sentenced instead of serving the time he deserved. He was going to get off easy too, but apparently he was willing to do the crime, but not the time. The man is a criminal and a fugitive. I doesn't matter if the Girl wants the case dropped. It doesn't matter if there was shenanigans on the part of the prosecutor and judge. Polanski plea guilty to the crime he should do the time.
-
Great post. Great point. Who gives a fuck about the media witchhunt that followed? So they were out for blood, who cares? The point is the crime still fucking occurred. A 13 year old was raped and anyone defending that behavior is a despicable human being that has no right ever being in the same room as a child. I'll joke about a lot of shit, but this isn't one of them. There is nothing funny or cute about this, and the fact that this argument has to take place blows my fucking mind.

And I believe this TB deserves further comment from Harry.....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
.....to clarify his stance.
-
Just read what he said. He's going to ignorantly accept any "documentary" as gospel as long as it gels with what he wants to believe.
BTW Harry, Polanski wasn't only convicted in my mind. He was convicted in a court of law as well. -
Jan 28, 2009 2:05:23 PM CST
yeah, the court shouldn't have picked on Roman....
by dannyglovers_dickblood
......poor guy, he was famous and the prosecution wanted to make a name for themselves and bring him down. Aaaaawwwwwwww. Nevermind the fact that he put his cock in the ass of a 13 year old child. The fact that he had to go up against the bullying court means he should be allowed to return to America like the Prince of Cinema that he is. Dumb motherfuckers. Jesus Christ-- eat a fucking bullet.

by dannyglovers_dickblood
....get the audience really feeling sorry for poor lil' Roman right off the bat. His wife was murdered, so he should have "Fuck Children For Free" pass, right? -
When a spouse is murdered they often recommend you drug and anally rape a 13-year-old girl to lift your spirits. It's what they did in the 70s before prozac.
-
What the fuck does your facebook page have to do with the release of Groundhog Day? Oh yeah, it gives you yet another chance to drop the name of a celebrity who "hung out" with you for just as long as it took for the film's publicist to think you'd give them a good review. (Yeah, I know, it's a good film regardless.) Do you honestly think any of these celebs would hang out with you if they didn't think that giving you a hand job would get their films a plug on your site? Spare us please. No one gives a shit that you met somebody famous. No one cares how long you hung out with an actor talking about movies. Just review the film. Everything else is masturbation.

Great extra feature on the Polanski documentary.
by dannyglovers_dickblood
"Friends and Colleagues Talk about Polanski" feature several childhood friends and people who have worked with Polanski on films in the past. They talk about his rough upbringing during World War II and his time spent in film school in Poland. So in other words, grow up during World War II in Poland, come to America-- fuck all the 13 year old gash you can get your hands on, and live the sweet life in France. What a guy! -
to actually get in this talk back and try to defend that stupid comment about Polanski. Then again, his wife is about the same age difference as when Polanski raped that girl so maybe he has a kinship with him.
-
get over it
-
Do you mean Stanley Fish who put Groundhog's Day in his top ten American films of all time (almost certainly to garner attention and create controversy)? Because if you do, then you mean an incredibly popular literary critic whose work on rhetoric in Paradise Lost is a touchstone of that poem and whose essay "Is There a Text in This Class?" is not only required reading for anyone who goes to college for more than two years, but also spawned the school of reader response criticism. Because if that's who you mean, Stanley Fish, then he's not a film critic.
-
How much better would that movie have been WITHOUT Andie McDowell? A movie where a guy uses his immortality to become a better man to win the heart of the women he loves WHO ISN'T TOTALLY FUCKING ANNOYING IN EVERY SCENE SHE IS IN.
-
Especially at 12, shit I'd let him eat jolly ranchers out my asshole at that age, because Rosemary's baby is my favorite film...
-
I am not exactly trying to defend Polanski, but it seems very similar to the R. Kelly case. Clearly guilty adult bangs an underage slut.
I just find it interesting that R. Kelly got totally off while Polanski is still banned. That's the legal system's fault, but I don't see anyone up in arms about Mr. Kelly's freedom to pee on the youngsters.
Sharks in Venice did sound like trashy fun until I see the lead is Stephen Baldwin. So, um, no! -
Well, you heard about what he did to his sister right?
-
R. Kelly never admitted to doing it, he didn't flee the country before a trial began, and there was still controversy over whether that was actually him in the tape. There was a difference in a tattoo or something. Thats the difference.
-
Jan 28, 2009 2:54:48 PM CST
Also, the "Pee on You" video is better than "The Pianist"
by garbageman33
So that's why R Kelly is less guilty. He inspired better art.
-
From what I understand of the case, Roman Polanski is a child raping scumbag. It's pretty difficult to defend the guy. Unless, of course, you like child rape.
But goddamn is Chinatown a great film! -
If so, then that would technically make him a convicted rapist, making him a rapist. Whether or not he actually did rape the girl is beside the point. Unless you actually come to court and prove your case that in no uncertain terms did you rape the victim, then you are a criminal.
Of course the very idea of sex with a thirteen year old girl is repugnant and repulsive to the extreme. There is no fuckin' way there's any rational or acceptable situation where that could even remotely be considered tolerable behavior.
And I like the guy's movies.
However, if he's never been convicted than nobody has the right to outright condemn the guy. There's some kind of innocent until proven guilty type thing in our legal system.
Or did you all forget that? -
Um, do a simple google search assclown. The guy PLEAD GUILTY and then fled the country before he could be sentenced.
-
And she did not testify at the trial. Also, many of her family members testified that it was not even her let alone R. kelly in the video. So, that's how he got off. I also suspect it may have had something to so with the demographic makeup of the jury.
-
.....he claimed it was consensual, but the act did occur. So take that as you will.
-
Good answer. Love the misplaced anger. When someone asks you if you want fries, do you call them "assclown" too?
-
No, just the ones that ask if I want fries with my ass raping.
-
TOTAL BOARD MELTDOWN IN 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . .
-
I bet you're great at parties. "Assclown", really. I guess you never ask questions, huh?
That's, um, interesting... -
...felons who drugged/raped young girls, setting in jail even as we speak! Should we let them all free?
Or, is their crime absolved only if they make films? -
We've had several Polanski arguments over the past year or so and I remember you being heavily involved in one. You know damn well he admitted to banging the girl, and you know damn well he pled guilty. Don't play stupid just for the sake of stimulating an argument you fucking coward.
-
And Groundhog Day is such a kick-ass movie. But damn that cover! It looks like the cover for the new Tommy Boy release...
-
So are you implying if Roman, was Roman Polanski Washington III he would have been acquited?
-
to legal matters, but is there a statute of limitations? Or was this a felony? Is that the difference. Again I'm stoopid.
-
on that awful cover. And Harry, no mention of Lakeview Terrace? Its got Samuel "I ain't living next to a motherfucking mixed marriage, in my motherfucking neighborhood" L Jackson.
-
Yup, that's how good this shit is. I hope Fincher gets at least, Best Director for Button.

I'm not usually too into dvd extra's, but I can say that the extras on the original dvd's of the first two Bourne films were pretty cool. There was one neat feature in which you could re-edit the sound mix for a couple of different scenes. And the "makings of" were good, too. Nice packages. I imagine the Blu-rays are just as awesome. Love those films!

Deadpool is freaking hilarious.

Jesus Fucking Christ, people. Could you, I dunno, maybe reign in some of that sanctimony and indignant, faux-righteous anger a bit? You're not scoring any brownie points with anybody carrying on like this about a filmmaker whose best work is decades behind him. I mean, really.

You know the talkbacks are fucked up when DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD is the most logical one in it. How you can even attempt to give that rapist a pass makes you an unbalanced person. and dickblood is right Harry the first thing I thought about was how your coming off like a pedophile in hiding. Sick, sick , fucking sick. Children are more important than anything and its sad to see how there are people who try to defend people who hurt them.

A modern classic on par w/ his girl friday and similar classic comedies.I really preferred Doug Liman's take on Bourne over the Greengrass movies, which were great, but didn't have the same punch for me. (that could be due in part to my passionate hatred for lazy filmmaking i.e. "shaky cam")

I think Polanski should have to come back to the US to face his punishment. However, I find it hard to get to worked up over a washed-up director not being brought to justice for raping a girl when we are harboring war criminals like Kissinger and Rumsfeld. We should trade wanted famous people with Europe.

There's absolutely no denying that it's reeeeeealy fucked up to rape a 13 year old girl. That takes a special kind of douchebaggery. I's also fucked up (although not even remotely as much, obviously)for a judge to reneg on a plea bargain and give a guy 50 years for a crime he pleaded (pled? I don't know what the past tense is, honestly) guilty on. If it were me and I had Polanski's money and I got a call from the prosecutor saying the judge was going to give me 50 years, I'd flee the country too. Although if it was me, I would not have drugged and raped a 13 year old girl, so there is that. Now can we drop this shit and talk about 3-D titties? Honestly, that's what I really care about from this article and that's all this talkback would be about if Harry hadn't had dropped the "Polanski-bomb". The guy raped a girl and ran away and he still makes movies. Sure, it's all kinds of fucked up but unless you're a bounty hunter, it really shouldn't affect your life. At all. But every time his name is mentioned on AICN, you guys go apeshit. It's not like he's the only famous person to get away with a crime. Now let's talk about shit that really matters. 3-D titties!
-
there is another well paid person. who did exactly the same thing. Jonathon Ross. It was not reported around the time of the Ross-brandgate business. Ross has a book out called Why do I say these things. In that he says that when he was dating his wife. she was 16 at the time. dating a minor is against the law. to get around that He and jane goldman waited untill she was 18 before they got married. If that had been discovered at the height of the Ross-brandgate affair. His career would have been finished. all these talkbackers stoning Roman Polanski. should also remember that Jerry Lee Lewis married his cousin who was 13. I dont remember hearing anyone calling for Jerry Lee lewis arrest. but maybe they did. back then.
-
the us it would be bono. dont came back.
-
Anyone who finds any redeeming value in that flick is a moron.
-
Bid difference in the Ross case: he didn't drug and rape her. They dated and then got married. There are still states in the US where 16 year olds can have consensual sex. Florida is one of them. I met my wife when she was 16 and I was 19. We've been married 17 years now and I didn't even have to drug and ass rape her.
-
Take a closer look at the box art of that Polanski documentary... the old perv's clearly having a little fiddle! But on a more serious note I don't think what Harry wrote is apologising for or devaluing Polanski's crime (unlike a couple of talkbackers here who ought to be ashamed of themselves). I'm afraid I have to side with DGDB on this one - a good filmmaker but a sleazy a'hole of a human being.
-
He'll take that motherfucker to the mats!
And don't be afraid to side with me more often, mate. I've been defending your dojo round these parts. TOGETHER VEE CUN CONQUER DA' VORLD!!! -
He he! Lead on bro, lead on!
-
I just wanted to see DGDB explode in a tirade of useless internet fury. Calm down dude. And see a doctor. Blood from the urethra is bad news.
-
It's nice to have guy ritchie back

RockNRolla was a true return to form for Ritchie. Now that he's escaped from the clutches of Old Lady Kabballah we'll hopefully see more of his filmmaking goodness. I have high hopes for his Sherlock Holmes.

Bourne is one of the most solid film triologies of all time
by i am_notreal
All three films are really well put-together, nicely acted, good action, good twists...there just aren't a lot of holes. Yet I just don't feel as strongly about them as I do, say, the 1st 3 Die Hards. Don't know why. Maybe it's because we never really get to know Jason Bourne, but John McClane feels real, even when he's tying a firehose to his waist and jumping off of a skyscraper.
-
Good stuff there dannyglover, it is kind of boggling there is even DEBATE going on about it was this or that, she was a ho, his wife mutliated, can ya blame the guy type of stuff, clearly than anyone who's had someone they know killed by serial killers is allowed to go fucking kids? I'm pretty sure Poles had it tough in WW2, 13% of their population wiped out even, but you dont see others raping kids for their woes. And so what if he makes good movies, there are no free passes, the judge doesnt go "well he made Rosemary's Baby and Chinatonw, i hereby deem him innocent!" I'm sure he's fucking in the head from his shitty past but he fucked up and made a mistake, should of done his time and go some therapy to help his mindset afterward, not bail out. Also that "courts fucked Polanski" statement by Knowles is truly mindboggling, talk about living in another stratosphere, but then again his wife is just 4 years legal herself so his opinion is PROBABLY not the one to go to on the pedrapist debate.
-
Those movies are the most boring things ever, there's no plot and they always cocktease you about the clues and anticipation of who he is, and in the end, the big REVEAL is.... another dude who GASP rebelled against the company cuz he didnt like killing. What a fucking idiot. What a boring snooze inducing trilogy ending. Mannequin Damon is a joyless twat to watch, bereft of any character. Fuck realism in spy movies also, all the badguys look like douchebags and the evil badguy is old dude with glasses with name tag who looks slightly sinister with careful shadows. IDIOTS. I'll take the Bond movies any day. Although the last Bond movie stunk like shit as well, it was Bourne 4 basically.
-
I really hope The Sherlock Holmes movies does well and brings Ritchie to a wider audience.I think RDJ was a perfect choice and hopefully his hot streak will continue

I completely agree with everything you said. This site has become incredibly lazy. That's why so many people were excited about Quint's AMAD. The guy has a work ethic. Moriarity does too but he is a huge turd. Tough guy McWeeney threatening to ban anyone from the TBs that thought he was full of shit. Yoko getting her own column and avatar really sucks. We all get to read about her vinyl collection. Yuck!

really! well i was inspired by the pedlanski title above.

Or at least clarify them. If not it is only a matter of time before the Polanski furor breaks out in yet another Talkback. That said, I am done with the topic.

Because Harry deliberately stirs up rage. He posts the dumbest stuff he possibly can, and then laughs as we fund his site. Harry - if you read this... shame on you. Shame on you.

Hmmm... i thought he fucked, raped and sodomized a 13 year old girl??? Must've been some other director...

of lazy use of narration and how to use that narration at the end of your movie to belittle and reduce everything that came before it. Did Allen really direct that thing? I think he just had a Spanish holiday on the company's dime.
And I think I'd buy Rock'n'Rolla just for that pic/poster of Thandie Newton's arse in skyscraper heels. -

I Guess They Will Never Catch ZODIAC. If a big MOVIE like this does not bring him out from the depths of Hell, then nothing will. I suspect he died in some other unrelated fashion years ago. TV's LOU GRANT show did a storyline very similar to the real ZODIAC back in the day.

Harry, I said it before, and I'll say it again, you need to hire someone to do this column. I know you're a busy cat. I get it.
