ScoreKeeper Points You Towards A Report From The WATCHMEN Scoring Session!!

Published at:  Jan 28, 2009 4:38:01 PM CST

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here wondering who’s watching the Watchmen? Ah! I see it’s Dan Goldwasser over at ScoringSessions.com who attended the orchestral recording sessions for Tyler Bates’ upcoming score for WATCHMEN (2009) set for release on March 6th, 2009.

Dan has captured thirty-seven glorious photographs of the WATCHMEN scoring sessions which took place at Warner Brothers this past Fall using a mammoth eighty-seven piece orchestra. They’re posted at the only site on the world wide web sporting such a prolific collection of recording session photographs.

Only thing I want to know about the Watchmen score:

    by monkey butler

Is Karnak going to be accompanied by parts of Mozart's Requiem, as reported by some site I can't remember? Because that would be lazy and shit.

Whom will he plagiarize this time?

    by stalin vs predator

Hacks who cannot create but are paid to do so will always steal from those who can create.

By the way, it really is a surprise that any studio agrees to pay him after that "300" humiliation. In fact, it's the same studio that his thievery hurt! It was the first time when not only was a blatant musical plagiarist found guilty, but a studio was also forced to put all those banners and notices on the product...

"Warner Bros. Pictures acknowledges and regrets that a number of the music cues for the score of 300 were, without our knowledge or participation, derived from music composed by Academy Award winning composer Elliot Goldenthal..."

Remember this? Are the WB executives really looking forward to doing this again?

Stalin...the 'Titus' swipe had more to do with the temp track

    by killakane

Apparently, the proudcers and Snyder were extremely 'attached to the Goldenthal cues that the cut had been temped with. I think overall Bates turned in a pretty decent job for 300, but yeah that lift from Titus was glaringly obvious, a brilliant score by Goldenthal whom I would imagine/hope would be getting some kind of recompense for such overt plagiarism.

    Prison Fight on Amazon

    by scaryskeleton

Go to Amazon, do a Tyler Bates search and one cue from Watchmen pops up, 'Prison Fight'. It didn't give me a good feeling at all. At first I heard the electronics and thought they were a good idea for a movie set in the eighties, but it pains me to say that I think the cue is just awful. I so want a good score for this film, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I've had ideas for the perfect watchmen score in my head awhile, but theyre all from other films. Like "Grahams theme" from Manhunter is for Rorshach, Moby's "God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters" is Dr.Manhattan etc...so if the guy winds up plagarising them, Ill be happy!

Good to see a few behind-the-scenes photos from "Watchmen." To me what's most interesting is the orchestral layout and the detailed process of scoring. It's one thing to imagine what's going on, it's quite another to see the conductor, orchestra, and video monitor in process.
    Good stuff.

Okay, you guys who think a band is four guys with guitars and an electronic drum set are probably thrilled to see what real working musicians look like. You want a better look watch "RKO 281" again. Me, I'm married to a classical musician and see this stuff all the time.

    by dancingforever

Of how awful this will be. Let's see if the usual Snyder apologists will show up to defend this awful movie. Tyler Bates, the man known for stealing music and scoring such hits as Get Carter and Halloween 2007, wow what's next? How can anyone still hold out hope for this? I can't wait for the WB plants to show up and try to put a spin on this.

    by quantize

just having a scan back through this composer's catalog is a nasty reminder of lumpy intrusive hysterical movie scoring, the kind which is killing a lot of films..his TDTESS score is particularly nasty, cliched and depressingly weak...

yay hollywood, keep propping up those mediocre talents..oh well I guess we have Thomas Newman to remind us that there is some genuine talent out there...

One part of the scoring process...

    by jumpinjehosaphat

...that I've never understood is this: How many mixes get delivered to the film's final mixers? Do they have stems for 7.1, 5.1, foreign language, etc., or do they deliver a stereo mix that gets placed by the film's sound mixers?

Your streak of showing up in every Watchmen talk back, insulting me, and having nothing of value or on topic to add, goes undisturbed.
Could you at least once try to debate me? In fact, to keep on topic, I challenge you to defend this hack that's scoring the movie. I have laid out valid criticisms of him, mainly that it's public knowledge he steals other composers work. Now it's time for you to tell me why I should be excited and supportive of this composer. I give you my word I will stay focused on this one piece of debate only, I won't mention the squid, Moore, or anything else. Just the topic at hand. Have at it sir, prove me wrong that you actually are capable of higher level discussion and not just another Snyder apologist.

Scoring is when notes get written on paper. When you hear it it's called sound, or music if it's any good. A scoring session would involve a bunch of musicians fucking scribbling away on staff notation.

Anyway - the movie's got all the music referenced in the movie like "You're My Thrill" and "Unforgettable". That's the most important thing. I'll wait for the movie to come out before I start criticising the soundtrack by hearing a song or two..
